A developer or a game company can always make one smashing success or a good MMO, but the industry itself is changing quite constantly so something that use to be a great idea might turn out.. meh just because the times have changed.

Of course, great ideas don't always make fun games is also another aspect to consider when developing a MMO.

I agree. Developers might turn around and surprise you. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the Movie Industry.

And he is still continuing with his designing, hence, legend.

Sorry but TR and the fiasco he was part of took a big chunk of his legend status with it.

For some it may have. Many others remember the wonder that was the Ultima series, and hope that some day that greatness returns.

I hope he makes a game like that again, in the mean time his recent track record has taken a hit.

I loved Ultima, even when I played it as a kid. I never fully understood what was going on, I was too young, but I remember exploring the world in Ultima 7, stealing from every single house and shop at night to have enough gold so I could buy the deed to my first ever boat, meeting Lord British for the first time, unlocking the secret room upstairs in the castle, and fighting that weird tentacle monster that lived in the moat surrounding it.

Those where good times for me, and I think that game made me love MMOs even before they became big. I loved the freeform exploring aspect in Ultima. Richard Garriott will always be someone I wish great success. He shaped my love for RPGs and I hope he will continue to do so for others and rekindle my own.

I wish him the best, I hope for even greater things!

 C. Richard was number one when Richard was born.

Thus proving his legendary status. It's also a well known fact that Garriott has three hearts, two livers, and an unknown number of extra lungs in case any of the main ones fail.

If you can't kill it, don't make it mad.

Interesting. He's planning on taking on the giants at Facebook and MySpace?

I'm a sucker for the underdog, I hope it goes well!

He's pretty much caved and is now shitting bricks for the bs "social gaming" facebook market. In other words he's officially left actual  gaming and gone into marketing.

I never played UO, so all of my experience with Richard Garriott is based on Tabula Rasa.  That game had so much potential, but like so many recent MMO's it fell short.  Tabual Rasa just didn't get the benefit of the months of catch up development time that games like AoC got.

As far as I am concerned, Garriott isn't a visonary to me.  His next project could be called "Richard Garriott's Steaming Pile of Crap" for all I care.

Do you have any idea how much money those social gaming sites are pulling in?  I have no interest in farmville and its ilk, but they are certainly profitable.

Tabula Rasa spent so much time in development it should have been a more complete title at release then an AOC or most other games.

DO they make money? Yes. Are they real games? Not in my opinion. If that is RGs next project I will not be supporting him with my money.
