that's how incredibly addictive and popular WoW has been in the past. it was so pupular and so addicting that people actually made a website to help each others quit the game. that's pretty insane if you think about it, and even more insane are some of the stories you read on that website.  
 
no other game has ever reached such a huge and devoted fan base yet, and that is why WoW is the ruler by which every other mmo is eventually mesured by.

dont even bother to respond to this guy. he makes no sence what so ever. useing addons as a base to compare mmos? this guy knows whats goin on and why people compare other games to wow. has nothing to do with addons. someone please lock this thread.

All games are compared to WoW because WoW is by far the best known MMO and allmost everyone on these boards already knows how things are done in WoW.

If I'd start comparing all games to, say Xiah, and told "This game has a little better graphics than Xiah, but not much better", very few would have any idea how good the game's graphics are.

But if I tell instead "This game has little better graphics than WoW, but not much better", most of mmorpg.com readers will have quite accurate idea about how good the graphics are. By comparing other games to WoW I can relay more information with same amount of words.

Alright, last question. What about the idea that 70-80% of WoW's player base is in the Asian regions?

A game gets compared to the most popular style of it.  World of Warcraft is the king of MMOs so every game gets compared to World of Warcraft.

The same is true of a game like Farmville which is/was the most successful Facebook app.  Now all games get compared to Farmville.

Modern Warfare 3 is currently the king shooter with Battlefield 3 and Halo being close contenders.  Because of how close it is all games are almost dumped into MW3/B3 style of Halo style.

Every single RTS game ever made has been compared to Starcraft and now Starcraft 2.

People identify World of Warcraft as "standard MMO."  Everyone needs a standard and WOW is the standard for MMO.

Everyone on this website compares every game to WOW because this is MMORPG.com an MMO review/news website.

If your game is being called a "WoW Clone" it's for a reason, and NOT because it's simply an MMO. I've reported you for trolling.

I've actually seen a review saying eve online is wow in space.  No real point to this, just saying.

Because wow makes the most money .

Kinda a no brainer on why everything is compared to it.
