Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well.

I've been playing WoW casually for just over a year. Got one character to almost lvl 60 but lately I've been feeling a lil burnt out. It's cool to get some good new gear and the guild I am in fits my play style but it does feel like the same ol' grind. I am still gonna play but may be one of the new games will steal my interest.

Nothing has changed except the fact that before i had the expan to look forward to now there is nothing so i will quit.

That's exactly what happened to me.

Blizzard have really mis-judged the pacing of TBC. It took me 9 months to get level 60 yet less than 9 weeks for 61-70 and less than 9 days for some ppl in my guild. The thought of going back to raiding 3 times a week and having nothing else to do bored me to tears. I even dinged 70 in nagrand so i'd have 3 places left full of quests but when i found myself searching for a rotten egg i just thought to my self  "what the hell am i doing? just quit" - so i did.

Now looking forward to WAR, which sounds less endgame obsessed and more about the adventure and exploring on the way.

Being a medical student AND being an MMO addict (now MMO free ) i came across this  while studying psychiatry.... So i thought i'd have some fun....

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV TR) which is used by Psychiatrist all over the world as a guideline for diagnosing psychiatric diseases has these criteria listed for addiction/dependence (this is on case of alcohol or other drugs):
DSM-IV defines dependence as:
  • A maladaptive pattern of substance use, leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by three (or more) of the following, occurring at any time in the same 12-month period:
    1. tolerance, as defined by either of the following:
      • a need for markedly increased amounts of the substance to achieve intoxication or desired effect
      • markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of substance
    2. withdrawal, as manifested by either of the following:
      • the characteristic withdrawal syndrome for the substance
      • the same (or a closely related) substance is taken to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms
    3. the substance is often taken in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended
    4. there is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control substance use
    5. a great deal of time is spent in activities to obtain the substance, use the substance, or recover from its effects
    6. important social, occupational or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of substance use
    7. the substance use is continued despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by the substance (e.g., continued drinking despite recognition that an ulcer was made worse by alcohol consumption)
I myself being an old EQ2 addict and almost fell off the wagon with WoW made some changes to the previous criteria to fit gaming:

DSM-IV defines dependence as:
  • A maladaptive pattern of gaming, leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by three (or more) of the following, occurring at any time in the same 12-month period:
    1. tolerance, as defined by either of the following:
      • a need for markedly increased amounts of play time to achieve satisfaction or desired effect
      • markedly diminished effect with continued play of the same amount of time
    2. withdrawal, as manifested by either of the following:
      • the characteristic withdrawal syndrome for the game
      • the same (or a closely related) game is played to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms
    3. the game is often played in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended
    4. there is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control playing
    5. a great deal of time is spent in activities to obtain the substance, use the substance, or recover from its effects
    6. important social, occupational or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of playing
    7. the substance use is continued despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by the game (e.g., continued playing despite recognition that a carpal tunnel syndrome was made worse by playing the game)

I quit after playing for 2 years, this was before TBC mind you. I had all of my Bloodfang set except my pants which dropped my Rag. I was so sick of having to go to mc with all the guild noobs just for a shot at those damn pants. Mind you we were up to the twin emps in AQ and I was so sick of having to set aside yet more time to go to MC. Finally I just said screw it and cancelled my accoutn. The urge still comes over me sometimes to reinstall it and pick up TBC, but I will just wait to see what WAR and Tabula Rasa have to offer.

Played WoW for a year or so, drilled tbc like it was a pac man level, got into Kara with guild, got some gear.. decided to step outside for some fresh air and havent been back.. cancelled account as well.

People in this game really have no life and take it far to seriously..

Wont be going back..

For the rest of you whom still play, enjoy, you will one day ask yourself.. "where have those days - months - years gone?"

My addiction ended when I found out I could get 210 dollars (us) for my 70 warlock.  I sold him quick :P

but I do want to play now and again but i stick it out with BF2 and warcraft 3 while waiting for AoC

but i think im going to get paid like 100 bucks to lvl a lvl 40 all the way to 70.  but thats the only way ill play because i dont wanna spend 60 bucks to buy wow + bc + subs again.

You could try that, but I think it comes naturally at higher lvls

Nicely done, The main reason i quit wow. If only i could find another mmo to play.

Well I have not quit as of yet, forgive me but I can not find a better MMO out there that can hold  my attention.  However, what you do realize when you hit 60 and certainly 70 is that the instance runs become more demanding.  First they are for the most part longer, which means having to clear a bunch of trash mobs for like 80% of the instances, and more time consuming, and hopefully your class will get a nice purple on one of the bosses.  Then you have to /roll for it with everyone else, I am pretty much done with this game, I only log on to play Eye of The Storm or AV.  I know that when the next expansion comes out I will not get it and that will probably be my reason to quit not wanting to level anymore.

I was addicted pretty bad last year.  It happens after i lost my job, i started playing WOW.  At first it was a few hours everyday, then it was 5-6 hours a day, then12 hours a day, and so on...

I tried to cancel my subs but i was always coming back.  So i did the only thing i knew was going to stop me from playing that game.  I delete all my characters.   I was having 3 level 60's and many many alts in the upper 40's, tons of gold and items, i delete everything !

Right now i re-started playing form scratch on a another server but i don't have that problem anymore, i play maybe 20 hours a week, which i consider normal.

So if you really want to stop playing then i recommend you do that.  Delete every characters you have.

i just think MMO's period are starting to get boring. I played WoW for about over a year did end game and pvping which i thought i liked and quit. Once i hit 70 (60 back in the day) i spent half of my logged on time running around Ironforge on my stupid mount. Then i went to the horde side and played and spent my time running around undercity... Played DDO and still play that casually like maybe 6 hours a week. Burning crusade came out played yeah till 70 and lost intrest right there. Now that i see this new one Wraith of the Lich King (and knowing the storyline) makes me wonder how they'll continue like after Arthas dies. I was thinking the whole Death Knight class was going to be its sepreate faction for w/e reason but if it was would be the case i just hop back on WoW and play the evil guys. After thinking a lil bit though That drealord that Illidan was supose to be working for is still around i think might continue the sequel after Arthas.

Its true that its hard to cancel account when you are developing character from day one. After allmost three years Qark has defo become my alterego ^^ i have same nick in all games i was playing in last 3 years (from battlefield2142 to eve online).

Addiction...i have ok life, WoW consume my time as much as i want it to consume, what means if i want to play WoW ill play it till 6 in morning (on weekends)...if i wont play WoW ill play something else (BF2142 or warlord lately)...im not addicted to WoW im addicted to pc games but addicted is too strong word. I have ability to live into game and live them trough, when i play WoW i actualy feel cold of dun morogh and warm beach of Booty Bay . I had same feeling in all games i was playing and enjoing, from Unteral and Half-life to Fallout and now WoW...WoW will end for me when i find sub, ATM i didnt found game worth enough to quit wow because of it.
