Blizz have 8 million ACTIVE (by there definition) account, these are accounts (not inc trial/banned or cancelled accounts) that have game time left on them or have been accessed with the last 30 days, so its not 8 million accounts created its 8 million accounts being played.. probably around 30 million ever made but who knows, its 8 million ACTIVE accounts.

Sure people with game time left on their account might have quit and did not cancel the account, but how does blizz know that, if theres game time left it counted, also the defence that most have 2 accounts, well if some 1 pays for 2 subs/month then its only right they are counted twice, how does blizz know they are played by the same person, could be a 2 brothers for all they know.

Many discount the asia market as its counted differently (counted if account used within last 30 days) so lets take them out, WoW still has 3.5 million in the west.

Blizz are very upfront on how they count subs, unlike any other company.

World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.

Lets not forget that 2.4Million copies of TBC expansion was sold within 24 hours of its release and it was only released in Europe and North america.

8 million is the number of accounts they have had.

Next time you see that number or the next time the number grows you have to think to yourself how many of those accounts are still active? (havent quit yet, also a person may own more than one account)

A company will always use 'facts' that at first glance make a potential customer go "wow thats really impressive, lets go buy it". But upon further investigation will realise the number is totally normal for game that has been around as long as WoW.

P.S. doesnt anyone else think that when you say the abbrieviation 'WoW' out aloud it sounds really kiddy? Repeat it to yourself "wow wow wow wow" it just has that childrens feel to it

I actually find it more childish that you didn't do any research on the customer definition of World of Warcraft before you mouth off. Or else you would have known that they only count ACTIVE accounts, not accounts created.

Cupertino:

"most have 2 accounts"

What the hell are you talking about? I know a lot of ppl playing WoW, and NO ONE has 2 accounts! The reason is simple. 1 account lets you have 10 chars of EVERY SERVER in your region. So if there's 100 servers in your region, you can have 1 or 1,000 characters for the SAME price!

You have to be pretty stupid if you pay for 2 accounts!

Sladey5:

"o yeh and 'WoW' still sounds kiddy when it is said out aloud, enjoy loving blizzard"

If that's how you argument in all discussions.... well, you have made a fool of yourself for the 2nd time in this thread. Not bad considered you only have 2 posts here so far.

what i really like about the game is that after you maxed..there are still some things to do. not like in other MMO, when you reach max then all you have to do is PvP.

Do you have any better definitions of the Internet Game Room players? That in itself can slant the numbers a lot.

Sure, they sold 2.4 Million Copies of TBC in 24 hours... well, not really. Most of those people pre-ordered months and months ago. Just because they were all technically bought on one day when it was released doesn't mean that they would have sold nearly that many copies if they hadn't jerk our chain around and said it will be released here, then pushed the date back again and again...

Also, Blizz  isn't the only one up-front about subscribers... where do you get off shooting that around? Blanket statements aren't very good.

And, seriously. 8 Million players doesn't mean the game is good. It just means that many players play an either crappy or great game. Nothing more.

Would say "MAD PVP SYSTEM" i would rather say "PVP SYSTEM THAT MAKES YOU MAD"
PVP in this game is terribly unbalanced, boring, repetetive, and was ruined by Battle Grounds and now further by Arenas.

The "8.5 worldwide subscriber base" doesnt say active subscribers, how many of those are different accounts owned by the same people.  Blizzard is lucky theres no other game out worth playing right now, they got a lack of caring for the input of their players.

This also includes everyone who has every made an account including those who made accounts on the 14day free trial. I haven't seen a recent number with how many people are actually holding open accounts still.

I've played a lot of WoW since the patch when Battlegrounds were first introduced, and I can honestly say that I think they only improved my overall gaming experience. You gotta pick the right class though, I think you'll have more fun stunning and killing with a rogue than you have when healing with a priest. I think it's unfair to say WoW's PVP system is terribly unbalanced and boring, because it really is not. It's all a matter of skills, every class can kill every class, some classes have more trouble killing other classes than others, but it's definitely not unbalanced, nor is it boring or repetitive (it will get repetitive when you play as a priest though :P).

In regards to people having multiple accounts. When I was playing original EQ very heavily it was not uncommon at all for people to have between 2-4 accounts. My wife and I hald 5 accounts between the 2 of us. Mostly because we were in a smaller raiding guild. If we did not have enough of the right classes for a raid we would fire up the extra accounts to fill out the raid.

Did someone do the math?

8,000,000 x $15.00(subscription fee) = $120,000,000.00 a month (one hundred twenty million a month)

$120,000,000.00 x 3= $360,000,000.00 a quater (three hundred and sixty million every 3 months)

$360,000,000.00 x 4 = $1,440,000,000.00 a year (one BILLION four hundred and forty four MILLION a year)

and do not forget the 8 million games sold x's $49.99 = ( $400,000,00.00 )

Well I don't know well all this leads too. but the numbers seem really high... perhaps the subscrition fee seems like an excessive amount now. How much did it cost to develope this game?

That should be enough money to develope and run the game for 10 years for FREE!

At least should have some really neat games in development with the bankroll they now have?

Everybody hates WOW but they secretly play it. Don't deny it lol!. I played WOW and yes the PvP is garbage and unbalanced so i just said screw it and instead of trying to keep up with the guys who rape i just made a wimp healer and still had fun hahahaha. WHO's really the winner if you own a wimp little healer hahaha. It's like fighting a gimp mentally challenged kid.. If you win the fight you're still the loser hahaha. If they beat me physicaly i'll beat em morally ya know.. err well maybe in the long run. That doesn't go for the rogue that kept killing me while i was trying to lvl past 30 though.. who camped me for hours hahaha
