I was just wondering if there would be an open pvp server? This game has the perfect setting for a strictly open pvp world. Open pvp meaning that anyone can kill anyone anytime they want to. Of course there has to be some balances in place to keep it from being a big gank fest. Anyway, has anyone heard anything about open pvp server?

As of yet no, seems like PvP hasn`t even been tested in Beta. But maybe after a couple months after release there might be a server for it. Ever play Ever Quest on Sullon Zek? Is that the kind of PvP your reffering to?

personally id prefer open faction pvp, i.e. members of factions can participate in free pvp with members of opposing factions, mainly for RP purposes, for example, its not often a member of the same army would fight another not counting friendly fire of course ;)

I am talking about the type of pvp that can shape the world for the players. If it's completely open pvp there are no safe zones. The only safety you have is usually friends/guild members. Also, a certain guild could inhabit an area and basically take it over by force. There is no boundaries because the only reason a area would be called a certain guild's was because they held it by force. What i'm talking about it alot like the original UO. It would need some better balancing though becuase there was alot of mindless ganking in UO. Also, in this type of pvp there is player looting. Were one player can kill you and take things from your body. There would need to be alot of balancing though. I doubt they can do it because most game makers don't think outside the box.

the main problem with the kind of pvp your talking about, is players dont see outside of the gank, especially the younger possibly less mmo mature.

In any case PVP will be tuned and tested in beta 4. They will have as large a variety of PVP servers as there is demand for, garunteed AT LEAST one at launch. Even if they have "wide open PVP" on a server I'm willing to bet they will have some kind of ruleset for it similar to lineage2. But that is pure speculation, it is entirely possible that they will have a server that follows the UO route. Time will tell eh? The good part is that they can tune PVP independant of PVE as they have allowed for abilities/stats/spells/etc. to function independantly based on if you are interacting with an NPC vs. interacting with another player etc. AKA they can tune, fix and balance PVP without breaking PVE and vice versa. |

Yes, the people that can't see past the gank is what ruines ffa open pvp in mmorpgs. It's sad because that is by far the ruleset with the most possibilities. I have always believed though if they would let me think up the balancing ideas for a ffa pvp server, I could stop the ganking and still have the sandbox feel of being able to do what you want when you want.

If you're going to stick it out there, don't be afraid if you get it cut off. |

I've often thought making open PvP such as orginial UO would be the way to go, however there was problems with it as far as $. If a player gets ganked by a group of punks and drops something extremely valuable they might be so frusterated that they start looking for a new MMORPG to play. This can cause for a drop in clients resulting in less $ for company. I agree that it brings an intense element to the game that is lacking in the WoW era of games, but it is not as easy as some may think. IF there is a good open PvP system put in place I will certainly play that server, however it is going to cause a great deal of haters in the MMO world even with a system put in place to prevent random killing sprees. This could be limited by # of characters allowed to be created, no one wants to red flag their main or favorite alt and so they may avoid from constant ganking. Time will tell what those at Sigil got up there sleeves. I do hope they address this important issue to us gamers:) |
