Hype rating-wise it's on that bubble of making the top list on the front page so it's not doing bad by any means. I think part of the reason it's not hyped higher is because some fans of other games will hype everything else poorly, Vanguard included. That and I'm sure this game has had it's fair share of low scores because of it's association with SOE and the misinformed belief that this is merely EQ3.

I think a big reason the hype meter isn't higher is because the developers are very up front about the fact that this game will not be for everyone.  They are going to put many elements into it that people don't like (long travel times, difficult corpse recoveries, etc.).  This will probably turn a lot of people away from playing it.  But these are elements that I find attractive and actually draw me to the game.  Long travel time gives a player the feel that they are in a "real" virtual world.  And things like long corpse recoveries gives a player a sense of accomplishment when they actually survive an expedition.  Gamers often complain about how boring and routine MMO's are becoming while at the same time complain about not wanting to work too hard.  Well I wonder if they even realize if its difficult elements that make the game exciting and worth playing.  Leveling is another example.  Players love to complain about how long it takes to level a character up, yet when they reach the top, they get bored with the game and stop playing.  The goal of playing should not be to level as quickly as you can, it should be to enjoy playing and gaining levels while you are having fun.

Just my thoughts

Read those hypes, and you will see some of the SOE haters, and such bashing it. It's what happens when you give the uneducated the power to vote.

Did I just say this out loud?

SOE hater or not, 99% of talk about Vanguard is hype. All you need is 50% of the hype/reviews/rumours/beta testers to be correct and you'll have a good MMORPG. Trouble is how many MMO's have had alot of hype in the past and disappointed?

A ton of them, but a lot of them, I can't quite tell you what they are missing. There is just something out there, like maybe a really good community that is hard to achieve. But once it's there that game will last a long time.

QFE

Other than some vote that people can use to be malicious, how can we measure hype?  How about measuring how much people talk about it?  Look at the various game forums on MMORPG.com.  WAR, the highest hyped anticipated game, has 6348 posts.  LotRO Has 3736.  AoC has 2951 and Star Trek Online has 3012.  All of these are voted the highest anticipated games on this cite.  The Vanguard discussion folder has 10,978 posts.

Obviously, people have an interest in Vanguard and discuss it more than any other game in development.

I ask again...

Why does the hype meter on mmorpg.com matter one little iota?

maybe low hype to lower dissapointment.  i think this game will be awesome.  But whenever i go into a movie thinking it will be awesome, i am disappointed.  Anyway, i'm going to try this for sure no matter what the hype.

Looking at it from an unbiased view point and having researched a ton on the game, its just going to be your average run of the Mill MMO so it doesn't need to be hyped up alot. If it was ground breaking fair enough but sadly its not, the crafting system all though sounds really cool is actually a rehash of various other systems when you look at it and is similar to EQ2's original system (as in when you do the actual crafting) its been beefed up slightlybut ultimately its still your fantasy MMO crafting system common to most MMO's. Gameplay wise its your regular run of the Mill fantasy MMO and sadly doesn't deserve to be hyped up as its nothing new.

But why does it matter?

The hype level means nothing to anything.  It won't effect sales.

Why do you guys care?

To answer the question of the original poster, the hype meter for Vanguard went down preciptously right after it was annouced that SOE would be involved with game.  A big portion of their market is EQ fans unhappy with the way SOE handled that game.  So early on many people perceived Vanguard as the antithesis of what SOE stood for in MMO mangement. So when SOE and Sigil team up, those people felt betrayed.

I never played EQ so I don't have a full understanding of exactly what happened in EQ, but I did play SWG before the controversial changes.   I was looking for Vanguard to be the MMO to replace SWG for me and our guild was making plans to reunite in Vanguard.  Once it was annouced that SOE would be involved, that made Vanguard not an option for most of us (including me) and essentially all our plans feel apart.  Too bad really, I think I would have enjoyed it.

Well I guess low hype means less expectation, that leads to less people eager to try the game, so less inclined to buy the game, so lower sells.

wrong, the hype meter on this site will have absolutely nothing to do with how well this game will do at release.....and that was the point he was trying to make i believe.

You have to admit, bap...the buzz on Vanguard has fallen off alot...the hype meter may not have a direct relation to sales, but it is often an indicator...this game is no longer touted as a WOW killer.
