Unofficially, a 2.8, 1 gig, and an x800 or x850 (or nvidia equvalent) would be good.

Unofficially, a 3.0, 2 gigs, and an x1800 or higher (or nvidia equivalent) plus pci-express and a fast FSB would be the high mark.

What in HELL is an Aluminum Falcon?!?!?!

It's already been proven (on the forums and not violating the NDA) to run in Beta on MUCH less hardware, albeit on minimum settings...

As far as buying a new comp: It seems we've come into a time where we'll be buying new Comps every 2 years, if not sooner, to keep up with technology. This is a first; a time when tech is evolving so quickly and cheaply that the race can not be won, and the goal is constantly moving. It will be interesting to see if software companies slow down the evolution by developing products to a lower hardware "standard".

That all said, look at the requirements for all games coming out this fall or next winter. They are similar or not listed yet. AoC is probably going to need a MONSTER machine.

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

The official word from their FAQ

It's too early to announce Vanguard's hardware, memory, or storage requirements, but our current guess at a 'min' spec is a machine with a 2.4 ghz processor, a graphics card with 128M of RAM, and between 512megs and 1 gig of system memory. Higher end systems will be able to take advantage of certain graphics and display options, but it is very important to us that Vanguard be a game that can be played and enjoyed on an 'average' gaming machine. Also, keep in mind that faster computers and graphics cards, plus the price of RAM, continue to go down -- with our planned release date being Winter 2006/07, a machine that will run Vanguard well will not be a costly one

Huh?  This is one of the slowest periods in terms of technological advancement of home computers since I got my first Commodore 64 20 years ago!  For nearly all of the 90s and the first couple years of this decade you needed a new computer every 2-3 years if you had any hope of continuing to play new games.  For example, in 1999 I bought a Pentium 2, 266 megahertz, with 64mb of ram.  That wasn't absolutely cutting edge, but it was on the upper side of "normal" for the time.  In 2002 I bought a Pentium 4, 1.8 gigahertz, with 256mb of RAM.  Again, not top of the line, but pretty good for the time.  So in 3 years I went up 2 models of a pentium (skipped the P3 all together), upped the speed of the processor by roughly 7 times, and had 4x the RAM.  Today, over 4.5 years later we are still on the Pentium 4, an equivalent system (i.e. good but not cutting edge) has only double the processor speed, and only the RAM seems to have roughly kept up as about 2gb is "standard" today.

This nearly 5 year old system is still going strong.  Last year I just added some more memory, a video card, and a bigger HD and now it plays games like Oblivion without a problem.  I'm holding on to what I have until the next generation of processors come out.  As for Vanguard, I can't imagine they would make the retail version so system intensive that it cuts out a sizeable portion of the potential playerbase.  At this point if a computer can run something like Oblivion but not Vanguard then I think Sigil may end up shooting themselves in the foot.  But since it is still Beta I'm not that worried.

Lol I don't think that the top configuration is actually far from today average.
I have a 2 years old computer and the only thing I would have to upgrade is the Videocard.

Pentium 3.2
2 GB ram
180 GB HD
ATI 9800 pro

Thats a very outdated faq. What I posted is what Brad himself posted on the forums a couple of days ago.
