I guess you could say I'm bored sick of all the MMOs out right now. My last was RIFT which I grew bored of around level 35 on my first character. Before that I had a good run with DFO for around 14months and plan to return once DFO 2.0 is released for my pvp fix. I've always been a big fan of pvp but I'm at the point where I'm willing to give a good PVE mmo a shot if its worth my time.
I played the trial to level 10 in all spheres (crafting/adventuring/diplo) and enjoyed it but I ended not subbing mostly because my g/f doesnt have any interest in VG. I'm at the point now wheres it either quit MMOs until DFO 2.0 is released or try something totally new. I have no interest in GW2 or TOR. The more I see of Archeage I'm becoming less interested as well.
So, is VG worth my time. I'm looking for some convincing to make me sub or otherwise not sub to VG. My days of playing MMOs are coming to an end sometime soon in the future (within 1-2 years maybe) I think so VG may very well be my last MMO if I decide to give it a serious go and sub.
To sub or not to sub? ;-) "Mom, I play Tera for the gameplay I swear!!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-2paFdRw_U |

Vanguard, IMO, is an explorers paradise. It's HUGE and has really interesting stuff to see in little corners you'd never expect to find anything at all. Great dungeons. Also it doesn't hold your hand as much as other games. It has a little more of the old school feel. Death is a bit harsher, although nothing like EQ 1. The classes feel a lot different than other games I've played, which is a plus. Crafting is probably the best of any game I've played. The only problem it has is pop, which is increasing, and should continue increasing as VG has a dev team again. Get into a good gulid right off the bat, like the newb friendly Twylight Song (or something similar). I think my wife and I are going to start playing again (will be wife's first time). ----------------------------------------- |

Wish i could convince mine to play as well. She seems to be enjoying RIFT because she can play for an hour or two and do alot of different things in a short amount of time. Last night she played for an hour and did battlegrounds for example. RIFT for me is like playing WoW all over again..I left wow long ago and no interest in playing a remake of it. She doesnt seem to have any interest in VG probly because its not as polished, has no pvp, and the characters don't look as pretty. Woman and their cosmetics lol. Anyways, if I do end up playing VG it will likely be without my g/f which sucks..I can't handle another night of being forced to play RIFT though :-/ "Mom, I play Tera for the gameplay I swear!!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-2paFdRw_U |

Originally posted by Ethian I would say don't sub. It's my experiene over the years that when people ask this question they have something specific in mind that they want to experience. My thougth is that no game can really fill that bill. Vanguard is a great game and as one person indicated, it's an exporer's paradise. However, it has a low population and a huge world. I'ts also creaky as it has numerous, pretty much not game breaking, bugs. Oh, it's much better than at launch but you will find oddities. Whether it's killing a mob and having it die but it's still standing there to creating a character and seeing the hair you choose actually appearing at the side of the character's head. Note, just hit back and then create again and it rectifies itself. The world is huge and beautiful, the classes are very unique. How many games allow you as a necromancer to customize your own undead beast? or a sword wielding monk type class that heals (Disciple). If you are the type of person who can get into a game and not really have to be partied all the time or be chatting away all the time in general chat then Vangaurd "might" be for you. People say the crafting is deep, you can cut down trees and watch them fall, you can make boats that you can use or houses, etc. You dont' have to do the quests if you don't want though I imagine some might give decent awards. But it's an older game with a die hard fan base, it's creaky and it's not for everyone. So again, I would say you need to ask yourself "what is it that i am really looking for?" If you have an existing idea of what type of experience will keep you playing mmo's for the next 1-2 years (and why are you going to have to quit? I know plenty of busy family peopel who still play?) and you really are asking whether it's worth your time after playing the trial isle then I would question whether or not Vanguard is for you,. There is no guarantee on its lifespan (though as another indicated it has bee going for many years) and no guarantee that any of the updates that sony will be making will be anything ground breaking. Some are predisposed to this game and some 'not". I keep a Vanguard account because qutie frankly it is the best mmo on the market for my tastes. Even though I only play it casually. |

Agree, i never felt a better experience than while playin VG, that;s why im givin it another try now, but he (original poster of this thread) gets some good pointers from you. For what i'm concerned, i hope it gets more populated, but i don't mind either way, i was there from launch, and liked it... so read the previous post, and just make your choice.
my 10 cents. |

I can honestly say that I think the only thing keeping me from subbing is the lack of items around the world to interact with(from what ive heard anyway). I've always loved exploration in MMOs, but in games like RIFT and DFO there are things to find around the world to reward you for taking your time to explore which is nice. Chaos chests in DFO and the artifact system in RIFT are examples of this. I can go out exploring all night knowing that theres a chance I may find something hidden away somewhere worth looking for. In VG I've heard that there is nothing to interact with I think?
Exploration in VG basically consists of running around sight seeing and boss hunting (which can be a blast) but will get old for after awhile. If there were chests to find, or any sort of "hidden" objects around the world I would sub in aheart beat. This alone would make up for the lack of pvp for me. Exploring is fun but I like to find things rather then just run all night looking at things. "Mom, I play Tera for the gameplay I swear!!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-2paFdRw_U |

Originally posted by Ethian The thing is, there are items one can interact with. It's just not a "feature" per se. For instance, and I've used this example before, I discovered a lonely little island just off the northern coast and after discovering there was a tomb there that was a bit too high for me, I was about to leave when I made the decision to climb a large hill. at the top of the hill was a ruined tower. Inside was what I thought was a mob (like a blob) but when I clicked on it to attack it, it turned out that it was an interactive piece. It "opened' and I got a cheese that gave some sort of buff or healing over time ability. another time I decided to go into what appeared to just be a small shrine that just looked like a set piece and inside it was a book which gave a quest. Another time I discovered another little island with undead. I decided to fight my way to the top and in the top room I discovered a book on a table. I could interact with it and it gave a quest. Or the time I found a secret door in a tower by just exploring. Imagine my surprise when I clicked on part of the wall and it swung open. There are many things in the world to discover. It's just not touted as a feature that updates a collection log or journal entry. |

As the last post stated, VG too has chests scattered in most of the continents but all they provide is minor potions n all...nothing gr8, but feels nice when you get them doing adventoring n diplomacy. But if your sole aim is to just roam around only thinking u will find some gr8 items..then it won't happen. VG is pretty immersive and if you go play it without any preconceived notion, u will enjoy it a lot. There are so many tings to do in VG that people who play it for 1-2 yrs...don't know about it. There is gr8 adventoering, crafting , diplomacy(gr8 card game if u develop a taste for that), than u can work on faction n get gr8 unique racial mounts and gears ...this itself takes a long time and there are multiple ways to gain factions. Then there are MEST collection quests which u get at lvl 10 in Mekalia and the quests are to collect a lot of different items all over Telon...completing them gives you faction plat coins which can be used to but racial mounts n gears... You have tons of thing to do...I am playing more more than a year with onlu 1 character...i am still lvl 50...still i havent seen half of telon...I still have so many things to do... The key is to have patience, ther eis no instant gratification in this game...give it time, join a good guidl..this game grows on you Once a Telonian, always a telonian. |

i think that, if you played the trial and liked it, and are not bothered by joining a guild, you would probably like the game. it's (finally) a good game.
though I would be remiss as an eve fanboi if i didnt mention you shd try eve too *evil* RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid. Currently Playing EQ2, TERA Recommendation of a game you probably haven't tried: POTBS, Atlantica, L2 |
