Vanguard's Death Penalty is like Rift's. Both are not punishing. I think that should end the discussion right there.

If "punishing" is based on your opinion of what is punshing then that could make sense to you, otherwise it does not.

EvE's death penalty is not punishing either I suppose.

Punishment IS the challenge.  Avoid being punished by not taking on more than you can chew.  Avoid being punished by crafting some better armour.  I could go on and on.  But the goofballs coming out against Vanguard are growing tiresome.

It's probably for the best you do.

The death penalty really changes the game... you no longer just charge into battles saying "eh who cares if I die I just get 1-3% amour damage."

Have you gotten a look at SW:ToR's resurrection system? It's a joke- but I'd still play the game.

Speaking of SW:TOR's ressurection system... they are having the same arguements we did on VG's DP 5 years ago.

The original EQ is a game where death had real consequences.  The experience penalty was harsh by current MMO standards but that wasn't the half of it - the real kicker is that all your gear is left on your corpse.  If you died in a difficult place without someone to rez you nearby it could be real trouble just getting back to your corpse.

Worse scenario I ever heard of was a server-first guild fighting through North Temple of Veeshan, somebody blew the pull in a room with 3 big hungry dragons (pulled all 3 instead of 1) and wiped the entire guild.  Story goes it took weeks before the next guild on the server was able to fight down to their level in the dungeon and rez everyone (for a hefty fee I'm sure).

I had to make that same pull for my guild on the Rathe server and it was a huge adrenaline surge pulling it off successfully on the first attempt.

Ahh, the good 'ol days... where death had real consequences.  Piss on WoW and every other carebear clone that came after it.

Vanguard's legacy shall forever be a reminder that you only get one chance to make a good first impression.  Great potential ruined by an early release because they didn't have enough money to finish development and testing.
