I haven't played a minute yet, but plan on logging in tonight. I was hoping I could get a few answers here. I thank you in advacne for whatever help you can give.

1.) Server selection, what server has the highest pop? I loathe playing these things solo, I understand that it will be largely solo until later because the game is old and probably not many fellow newbs, but at the end of the day I want to be able to find a group once in awhile.

2.) I have no idea what class to pick. On WoW my favorite toon was a druid. on lotro I loved my Rune Keeper. DAOC I was a skald. The original everquest I was a shaman. Anyways, I prefer utility caster/healer types that can fill multiple roles, something that can DPS effectively AND heal in a pinch would be idea. I was also considering the druid class, which I understand is more of a caster here, but I don't really know any of the details. Another class I was looking at was bard, but I am new to the game, and with the making of your own songs and such I thought it might be a bit too much for a first toon.

Greetings, While its been almost a  year i think since ive played VG myself i think i could offer up some suggestions to ur Q's.

Server wise:

I only played on one server so its the only reference i have but look into Seradon.  Despite all the talk of the game being a dying game i personally felt that seradon seemed like a good server. I always saw chatter throughout the region/global chat. Always saw players around even the lowbie areas(where i spent my time due to an alt-ism habit of mine). Not to mention it has a nice community overall, dont mistake this for a perfect community where u dont have immature F*'s trolling around or otherwise just wasting precious chat space complaining or otherwise being negative toward the community. It has nice people on that server.

Class wise i always leaned toward melee w/potential for range or hybrid types, but i think i could offer up solid suggestions for what ur looking for. Druid is as uve heard more the offensive caster type here. If u want the utility caster/healer that can still serve some solid dps VG certainly has great options for u. One of the nicest things i always saw /still see in VG are its various classes.

Look into its shaman, The disciple is one of the more unique styled classes in the game. its almost monk like combat wise, but has a decent skill/combo system . I never played that one much myself so i dont feel i could do it justice in explaining how it functions , maybe another thread reader will be able to but its a good healer and can easily hold its own dps wise. Also i believe the cleric here would fit ur suggestion quite well. The cleric gets the heavy armor and solid melee ability to support its casting. Clerics here will also eventually be able to choose a certain patron god so to speak to follow. Each of these offer up a new range of abilities to mix in with ur standard arsenal. The ones i recall off the top of my head are a god of war u could say that offers up an expanded range of straight melee abilities, one of death that offers  lifetaps and drains, etc.  Believe there are ones that cover more defensive aspects, offensive, casting, better healing, etc.

Those would be the main classes i could think of for what ur looking for.

The bard is one that i didnt know much on past being able to form/name ur own songs, dont think i heard ne thing bad about them. Perhaps the bloodmage should be looked into, one of the other unique class designs ive seen. Alot of your healing comes at the expense of dmging ur target. They get hurt, u get healed. THey do require more attention in handling their abilities though.

In closing hope that some of this is of help to you.

1. Go with Seradon, it still has a deecnt community. The others servers have low populations.

2. As for class, I think it would be in your best interest to try them all out for a few levels. Vanguard has a ton of classes. There are so many that they do overlap in utility, but it allows you a little more flexibility for the gear and appearance you want.

Xeth server population is about the same as Seradon.

You might want to look at the Shaman class.  Its primarily a healer, but it has 3 sub-classes Tank (bear),  Light Fighter (Wolf), and Caster (bird).    The class gives good buffs and has a lot of utility.

I think Ranger is one of the easier classes to start off with.

I think Tanks are in the biggest demand these days.

I like to be able to fill dual roles in pvp, can a bear shaman tank effectively? And if asked, can I heal effectively? And more importantly can I solo when i can't find a group? I prefer to group like always, but sometimes you're forced to solo. I played a druid on WoW and people would tell me I couldn't heal back wehn i was feral spec, but always seemed able to do it. is this similar that way? Also, is there pvp on the regular servers, or is the ffa server your only way to get a pvp fix? Can't play ffa pvp and its been my experience that established pvp servers are brutal for newbs to start on anyways, so not an option. Just wondering.

I just download this game my self and it updating as i type this and was wondering what would be a good class that could tank plus to do some good DPS at the same time. as i like to group but sometimes you just can't find one or just want to solo alittle bit as you don't have time to get a group going

Well...I'm heavily biased but I'd recommend a Dread Knight.  Very good tank with good DPS (for a tank).  Has some spells to attack with, nice debuffs, and can heal itself with certain abilities (lifetaps). DK is also a good solo class, although I duo a lot with my bf...and of course the class does well in that. :p

from what i recall blood mage is a good healer with a caster DPS chaser, might be what the OP is asking for.

I liked the game, incidentally and dont have anything bad to say about it, the only reason i choose to play Eve over it is because eve is more of a change of pace from WoW (so, if i am going to have 2 game subs i'd like them to be as different from one another as possible)
