The only real "impressions" you gave was that it is complex and fun.  Not a very detailed impression.

You should have included what you think of the basic aspects, at least whats included in the tutorial.  Such as what you think about the UI, combat in the beginning, basic mining, and basic exploring.

You just told me information I could easily get off of the website and its that right there that makes me want to give you this:

Impression: the first and immediate effect of an

experience or perception upon the mind; sensation

What you gave me was the first and immediate effect of your brain putting to sound what is said on the website.

Honestly, you need to sit back, stop making videos for a bit, and rethink what your doing because your doing it wrong.

Defeats the purpose of these videos to try and make an impressions video on EVE and only spend 5-6 mins on it. 10-15 mins and you could cover the basic mechanics of skill training, the mission system and faction building, and the jumpgates. Also you are not correct in saying that a player is safe in 1.0 security system. Its perfectly possible for me to attack you in such a system and blow you up in under 5 seconds. I'd lose my own ship to concord, but I have a lot of ships and dont really care about my faction standing to concord. Lots of players are like me, so, yeah, I dont think you did a good job with this video.

hey ripper, first off i would like to introduce you to the elitest eve players above me who feel the game deserves a much deeper introduction than what you gave.  but at the same time failed to listen to what you was saying..

i think i heard you say that you was giving a noobs impression from the first few moments of the opening to eve.. now i dont know how much clearer that can be to these elitests above me but i sure as hell got the gist of what you was trying to do and you did it just fine.

it was a detailed enough introduction for a new player and you gave plenty of information to cause people to want to take a look.

how ever its good that you kept it short and sweet because you cannot explain eve in meer words, the game must be experienced to get a fuller picture and thats exactly what you said.. you in your own words said you was scratching the serface and thats exactly the sort of things these videos need to do.

any more information and you would be utterly overwhelming new players minds and scareing them from the game before they even have chance to get to grips..

so as a long term eve player myself ill back ripper up and inform new players that it is exactly how ripper says it is in the start and you will indeed only see what he has said.  this will last until you have got into the game and done a little traveling and a little looking into the market system, then all of a suden the potential of the game just jumps on you and grabs you.

its a truely emence expeirence for any sci-fi fan and its also a very unique game style for any gamer.

everyone should definately at least give it a trial run, you can download a 14 day free trial.

and one more tip. once you have been in the game for a while, it is possible to play the game for free by purchaseing ingame time codes of the ingame market legally. for ingame credits. many players play eve this way..

eve cannot be explained not even on a 2 hour video its just impossible, the game is as ripper says massive and the largest game world in the world. nothing comes close to it.

the games economy is realistic and alive its breathes.. and the players are th eones that fuel it.

dont worry its not monopolised, there are far too many people trying to work the market for it to be monopolised. market competition is ripe so prices are more than fair in most cases.. and prices in eve are based soley off the base prices of the very basic construction materials.. and the players also build everything too. and research and mine.. the game is epic it has to be tried to be understood!

its no good having the elite trolls from eve come on here and bad mouthing the efforts of a noobs vvideo for noobs, it just shows elitest that dont tolerate new players and really you should be embrasing them so eve becomes better..

well done ripper granted not the best movie in the world but it says all that needed to be said about eve..

good video :) next time let a sexy chick do the comentary.

I'm not an "elitest eve player."  As a matter of fact I dont play eve and never have gotten past the 21 day trial period, its just not for me.  But I think that Rippers videos are just terrible because they dont really give anyone any information that isnt right out there available.  And he usually never gives an impression.

If you notice, I have posted on almost every single one of these videos posting what I feel was done right and wrong.

Too short, especially for this monster and dont spend so much time on the intros. If this was the first of a series of intro's, the next should be about what a new player experiences first time in and what to do.

EVE Online is a monster that took me six month to master, and even now I'm still learning six years on. A five minute introduction, really doesn’t do it any justice at all. The video felt rushed and it never even touched on the basics. The only way to find out if EVE is a game you would enjoy, is to try it for yourself.

I enjoyed it. I think all the posters above me are being way too harsh and negative though. Haven't played Eve in a couple years and that character creation system on the video is way past what it was when I use to play.

I think the idea behind the video is to give possible new players a look at the basics of the game to give them an idea of what the first several minutes are like.

Eve wins the prize for least noob friendly game out there. Every time I've tried it I ended up quitting because the choices are:

(1) do immensely boring and repetitive missions for isk and rep. After a week I can't face doing "Worlds Collide" for the 20th time.

(2) give up your day job to make isk trading the market (no thanks).

(3) spend 18hrs a day mining to make isk (would rather take my eyes out with a spoon)

(4) apply to join a corp for piracy, mercenary activity, 0.0 fun and be told you don't have enough skill points, experience, can't fly this or that ship or whatever.

Love the sandbox, and the freedom, setting and graphics, but for the reasons above I always found it, in the end, unplayable.

anyone recall the old script games ? just lines and lines of text and you had to mostly make up the graphics and they only exsisted in your head ? not fun to stare at for hours but, if you go into the story you would do it and swear it was awesome. Well eve is the updated version of that, point and click your way across the universe you don't "fly" anything point click wait, the greater the distance the langer the wait. this wait can get as long as 4-8 hours real time while you just watch things happen. Back in the day the text scroll games had a lot of followers so I guess thats why a text scrolling made pretty game like eve is popular sure as heck is not for the action packed game play.

@ Vonatar: Least noob friendly? The game starts with over 9000 tutorials right off the bat which give you money, free ships, free modules, and most importantly show you how to do pretty much everything except fleet pvp all for doing almost nothing; the Rookie channel automatically opens in chat; many players will help you or even give you money to get started just for the asking. What more could a noob want? It's the noobs that just click continue on each tutorial window and don't pay attention that don't get very far. So, RTFM perhaps? Sure, EVE has a lot of elitist asshats that will pick on noobs but what game doesn't?

As far as your 1-4 I can't argue with you a whole lot there. But:

1. The missions are a grind just like quests in every other game. Welcome to MMOs. If you mission in EVE right, and use a plan to train you'll stop doing level 1 missions like  Worlds Collide after 1 day.

2. You nailed this one pretty accurately. Market trading is lamesauce. Recommended for economics fanatics and fantasy space truckers but meh.

3. Mining, oh god is mining terrible outside of fleet mining ops in dangerous places. Sitting around in a hulk in hisec space is boring as church.

4. Its pretty reasonable for Corps to have standards to hiring pilots. Guilds of other MMO games also have standards most of the time if they're worth their salt. The classic example being WoW raiding guilds. Does a raiding guild set on clearing the hardest content take people in blues and greens into those raids? Of course not, they'd be shredded. It's not any different anywhere else in the online gaming universe. Only thing we can all do is get better and keep trying.

Oh, and btw, the movie was ehhhh 5/10. Regards, Doland.

That 1st impression wasnt that bad. Hes not a newb, at least not in that video.

He covered just the basics, the very basics, just like he said he was.

I think he should go back and do say a 10 or even 20 minute review after he does all these 1st impression videos.

He did a decent job for a 5 minute video.

But yes, cut out the long EVE intro next time, even though I like watching it every so often.

@Hokie half the video was cutscene.  Also hes not supposed to give us the basics, he is supposed to give us his impressions and how he feels about each aspect of the game.  Such as whether its good, feels fluid, clunky or is fun or not.  This is not an "Intro to Eve" video its an "Eve: first impressions" video.  They are not the same thing and many people agree with me on every single one of the videos they post.

Although it didn't even scratch the surface of eve, hell, the surface didn't even know it was there. lol, the video was quite entertaining, I feel like I want to go back to Eve, which I shall one day.

For those who are looking to know about the game, go with the trial, dont expect to learn ANYTHING from these videos.

And this is the exact reason I don't play EVE.

I find EVE extremely tempting from all I have heard including this very short intro, but free pvp and griefing makes it a definate no-go.

I personally enjoy Ripper's vids. It sounds to me like Ripper was commissioned on a specific project to make basic first 1st impressions, the videos he has done on youtube and on machinima have been much more detailed and longer than these... Maybe mmorpg wants a basic video featuring character creation and generic gameplay?  Anyways, keep it up Ripper, big fan of your vids, and grats on the G4 TV stuff.

I found this first impression is pretty solid. Five minutes is not nearly enough for any MMO, but I think you have done a good job using the time real-estate. Just happen that EVE is too much of a monster.

Keep it up, and don't let the trolls and elitist affect you. ^^
