The community content has been moved to community.eveonline.com and the main site ( http://EVEOnline.com ) is now primarily for those looking to get info about what EVE and its community is all about.

Do you think it does a good job at accomplishing its goal? What are the features you like about it and what would you change?

Definitely not a good job.

The site is a mess. It is using marketing catchwords and structure, seriously...

It is a website that is supposed to provide information in some structured manner, not a leaflet. "One Universe", "Sandbox", "Creations" - c'mon...

Any logic on that site is simply missing.

So much tech is used on that site and so little information it contains... Maybe it is visually appealing for some but I would say it is horribly functionless.

Thanks for the feedback! For gamers interested in finding out about EVE, what content would you say is missing from it?

My guess is that Gd would want the main page to say something along the lines of, "THIS GAME AND ITS COMPANY BLOW. DON'T PLAY IT." to keep in flavor with his recent posts.  :)

That said, I like the new site and I think it does a good job of laying some ground work for interested folks.  I do think it should be like a pamphlet of sorts myself.  The new site is such, on steroids.  There's a good bit of information presented that would answer quite a few questions for an interested party who knows nothing (or very little) about EvE.  Hell, they even put a link to the Jita riots on there and a brief explanation as to why they happened.

Can't please everyone but I think this separation of the websites was long over-due and, imo, has been well implimented.

gl hf fly safe!

Cheers.

Some more details, and probably more constructive, on what I find wrong with the site:

1) Navigation menu

As said previously, the catchwords are highly unappropriate and out of place. The menu and labels needs to be clear, descriptive and intuitive.

"One Universe", "Sandbox", "Creations" and "Capsuleers" in no way describe the content of the menu, where they will lead you and what you will find there.

2) "One Universe"

3D map is a great technological achievement but contains very little information value, yet it takes huge space on the center of the screen and if you are actually interested in finding out about topic, you have to scroll down and read that "wall of text" below.

"The world of EVE", "People and personalities", etc. tabs are supposed to be major navigation guides but when you actually click on any of them, only what is changing is dot colors on the map...

Then again, if you want to find information, you have to scroll down to find "boring" wall of text.

There is probably only place on the website I really like and where 3D technology used make sense: "Spaceships" section.

3) "Sandbox"

The structure makes false impression that there are classes in the game, despite there are not. I understand the intention to make the game more familiar to gamers that not used to classless systems but I do not agree that the site should pretend something the game is not.

Information content - each "class" only contains like 5 meaningless phrases, that is really awfully little information about...well, anything.

If I have to sum up information content, it is all cluttered under "One universe", in the text below the map and subsequent "sub-tabs". That is only place where you can find any useful information about the game.

I am sorry but I cannot find the website changes satisfying. It reminds me flash websites that are focused on presentation rather than content, and that is fine but I do not think EVE Online is the case.

The site is imo "jack of all trades" and equally bad in all aspects...

Cool beans. Interesting point about using pamphlet style.

Thanks!

Those "walls of text" that you mention are two paragraphs and I can see all but the last few sentences without scrolling on 1680x1050.

I think their focus was presentation > content.  This is a website for quick easy to garnish information for parties interested in EvE.  This game has and will always require you to not be lazy and get out there and learn more on your own.  No hand holding in EvE, you know that gd.

While I can see your points I think you're missing the point of the site.  That said, it isn't for us vets anyway so our opinions matter not.

Cheers!

Your opinions actually do matter, because you were new players once, too. :) You're a great gauge of what a new player is looking for both from your own experiences and talking with new players that came after you. Any and all feedback is welcomed.

I am not missing the point as the point is unknown, I just provide feedback.

Also, there is no way you can see the full site on screen you mention without a tweak. The size of the pictures and map is fixed and they simply won't fit pixel size wise.

I called it wall of text because the information that was supposed to be appealing to and interesting to read is presented in very unappealing and uninteresting way...

As said, I am ok with web sites made for presentation purposes but current EVE site is not a good presentation nor I believe it should be one.

While I agree it is a bit missleading I found it useful. I have played EvE on and off through out the years and had never tried the whole exploration aspect of it. The new web site got me interested and 2 month laters, still subed and playing.

its true that its a bit misleading, but I think its a start in the right approach. Letting people check out some ships on the website and stuff. CCP is pretty good about fixing mistakes.. we all know this,  so itll get better.

Well shit Gd.  I stand corrected.  I forgot that months ago I set my font size in Chrome to a smaller size which makes more stuff fit.  Dammit, sorry.

I found some of the information summaries cool, such as the exact count of the number of star-systems. It isn't as clear as to where you can find the main information wiki for back story, the item database etc which is found in the dropdown menu at the top right, but still...Nice and flashy, might bring in more players.

I think its a great start.

Needs work of course, but dont all sites?

Its hard for vets to make a valid opinion,  they can be stuck up and set in their ways and always fear change.  Especially where it concerns anything that helps new players.

Any "vet" who claims that the old site was in anyway better can easily be regarded as being very dubious indeed.
