For years now I've been hearing so much about this amazing sandbox style sci-fi game called EVE. At the same time I am often told about the steep learning curve. Gave it a shot and I mean the visuals are amazing, and the depth seems like something I'd enjoy. I don't really want to do a lot of combat stuff but kind of wanted to get into other things...but that steep learning curve is nasty.

Then you hear about the walking in stations coming soon (not soon enough imho) or whatever they are calling it now, and DUST, and the new planets look absolutely gorgeous, and I keep seeing people talking about colonizing a planet or something (not sure if that is legit or not because I can't find more on it) and it sounds just too amazing.

I am aware the steep learning curve is part of what makes the game what it is (depth) but I can't help imagine how many more people would play if they weren't overwhelmed at the start.

No real point, just venting since EVE Online keeps creeping into my head for an alternative to WoW that I have been sick of for months now...

I was overwhelmed by eve at first, and then I realized that all eve is is a very simplified version of real life, with a ton of places that look similar to each other.  There isnt too much in eve.  Dont get me wrong, its a great game, I do kind of enjoy my self in it.  And I think Dominion will break a lot to the table.

My viewpoint.

Revenge is a dish best served with mayonnaise and those little cheesy things on sticks.

There's nothing to it but to do it. Honestly. Yeah, it seems intimidating from the outside, but there's a nice, streamlined, informative tutorial (this did not used to be the case!) and thousands (literally) of people who would be glad to answer any questions you might have. Even on complex concepts, because they've all been playing for years and there's a great chance at least one person will have the answer.

Edit: Missed the part where you said you've already tried it. So you know about the tutorial. Still, utilize all the Rookie help there is out there. Look for guides and such as well; it's all out there because everyone was in the same boat as you once.

That's why sandboxes are so interesting in my opinion, you'll never fully master or understand it.

Choose something you enjoy and focus on it for a few weeks, if you are curious and always seeking improvement this will be the best way to play and enjoy the game.

A simple truth-"What people want and what is good for an mmo is not always the same thing"-mrw0lf

The trick is to accept that you can play EVE w/o understanding everything about it. I've been at it for about 2.5 years and I still have limited knowledge of several areas especially with regards to industry.

Figure out what you want to focus on first, and ready a guide on the subject, be it mining, PVP, mission running, wormholes etc.

A great place to start is with a general new player guide and I recommend this one.

Also, consider joining EVE University or the training corps of another corp/alliance which will be glad to answer your questions and run you through the game's paces.

i hate people who want to master a game, to know everything there is to know about it.  To me a sandbox = freedom.  I can wander into the forest and not care what i find or if its going to help me progress.

MMO wish list:

-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Pretty much impossible. I've been playing over 3 years and there are great swaithes of the gameplay which are a mystery to me. As said above, dont worry about it. Do your thing and do it well and you'll be fine. It is simply not possible to excel in every field, so you have to rely on other players.

one way to view the game it that you always have something more to learn. If you can deal with knowing that you do not know everything but know how to find things out then you are on your way to playing the game.

I played for a bit with the girlfriend, she lost interest early but I carried on through the tutorials. Am thinking about hopping back in again to pick back up.

Just get in there and start playing. That's the best way to learn.

You could get the basics of Eve down very easily.

It's when You actually choose to stick with something then you get to see how truly deep the rabbit hole really goes.

I've been playing for over two years and I;ve yet to mess with anytype of indy stuff besides some light mining.

I know next to nothing about flying Minmatar ships and the other day a buddy suggested I take a Stealth bomber for a spin since I was tiring of my Ishtar, Domi and Pilgrim pvp ships.

Im lost atm, Learning how to pvp with this thing. Went out on my very first Stealth bomber fleet yesterday it was about 20+ SBs and a few tacklers lol.

Goodtimes!

the problem with people in this game is they pay little to no attention to the tutorial which is very well done and teaches most of what you actually need to know to have fun playing this game. really hope they expand on dust so its more than just a fps would be nice to have an out of ship part of the game. just imagine the possibilities

Eve is the game that keeps on giving. Theres always something new to learn, place ot explore, fleet battles to participate in, and pvp to your hearts content. If you a carebear player then there plenty her for you too. Eve really isnt that hard hard to figure out as long as you take your time and just do it.

(AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH raises plunge rin salute To Empress Jamyl Sarum!)

The ONLY opinion that matters if I like or dislike about a game is mine and mine alone.

That is just my opion and we all know what THAT is good for!

Back for the third go round with EVE now.  I will up my sub tonight from the F2P.

I think what has interested me  the most in this go around was the ease of the tutorial and getting you started in the missions with Agents.  I do not think I did any missions before or at least very very few of them.

I do eventually think I will join a corp but, I have this feeling I want to explore it and learn more about it on my own before rushing in to a corp.  The last 2 times I did that and it seemed like I got burned out quickly.  May have been the rush over to join the corp as a newb and mission out on content between starter area and getting to them.

I dunno really.  However, I am feeling more in tune with the character I am trying out now.  Still not 100% sure what direction or what I want to do.  I may just start out on the carebear side and work on industry and R&D.  Once I get a better feel for the game I may roll up another toon for some PvP.  I feel I need to get a better understanding of the game and the in-game politics before strapping on a couple of guns and go pew pew about all willy-nilly like.

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

I know the feeling, I joined this game a few years back, got annoyed with it and quit. few months back I gave it another run and LOVE IT!

how you start will more likely than not determine how long you will stick with the game. Much like a first impression with another person. I'm not quite sure how I ended up on the path of mining and manufacturing, but I find it to be a very relaxing thing after work. Mine some asteroids, enjoy the show when your drones rip a rat to bits, mine some more, team up with some people and work on building massive expensive rare things and share the profit.
