I playd this game a while back and I quit because I literally couldnt get past the starting area cause there were so many bots, I couldnt tag even 1 mob.

I know theer will still be bots but has it gotten any better at all? Is it at least playable?

Well sometime around last year I checked and it didn't seem to have that many bots. So yes I would say it has gotten better.
