Ultima Online: Chivalry Skill Training Guide

MMORPG.com Ultima Online expert Vitaliy Dikker has provided us with this guide to Chivalry Skill training in the classic MMO.

Chivalry Skill Training Guide

If you are a Paladin then Chivalry is a required skill for you, and it is also of great use for all melee characters because it allows casting of magic spells to heal and to enhance combat abilities. The only real requirement for those spells will be tithing points. Focus is also a good skill to have depending on the type of combat you have chosen, since it will regenerate both mana and stamina passively.

Tithing points are like mana for mages. The difference is that tithing points are bought with 1 piece of gold per point, and you can only have a maximum of 100,000 points at a time on your chivalry spell book. In order to purchase points you have to go to any shrine. There is one in Luna, the Shrine of Wisdom. While carrying all the gold you can in your bag you single click the ankh and in the menu select ithe Gold Now it will ask how much you wish to donate, and it must be in increments of 100 gold pieces. The price of tithing points never changes, but having high karma will reduce the amount of points required to cast each spell.

You will also need to purchase the Book of Chivalry from an NPC Keeper of Chivalry in Malas. This book contains 10 Paladin spells and shows how many tithing points you have. From the same NPC you get to buy the book, you can also train for up to 30% in Chivalry skill.

SKILL TRAINING

As with many other skills, Chivalry training only works if what you’re doing works. So since you train by casting spells it isn’t going to do anything for you if your spells keep failing. Start with easy spells and work your way up and you’ll do fine:

Skill Spells

0

Buy skills from NPC Keeper of Chivalry

30

Consecrate Weapon

40

Divine Fury

55

Dispel Evil, Enemy of One

70

Holy Light

82

Noble Sacrifice

The higher your karma determines the level of damage, potency, effectiveness, and duration of your Paladin abilities. The level of your Chivalry skill itself is what will actually determine your chances to successfully casting the spell:

Name Tithing Mana Skill Info

Close Wounds'Obsu Vulni'

10

10

0

This spell heals 7 to 37 damage points, depending on your karma level. Cannot be cast while moving.

Cleanse by Fire'Expor Flamus'

10

10

5

Cures the target of poisons, but causes the caster to be burned by fire damage for 13-55 hit points. The amount of fire damage is lessened if the caster has high Karma. Can be cast while moving.

Remove Curse'Extermo Vomica'

10

20

5

Removes curses whether cast by necromancers or traditional magery (clumsy, weaken, feeblemind, paralyze and curse). Your chances at effectively removing the curses depend on your karma. Can be cast while moving.

Consecrate Weapon'Consecrus Arma'

10

10

15

Your weapon will target your opponent's lowest resistance.Duration of the effect is affected by the caster's Karma and lasts for 3 to 11 seconds.

Sacred Journey'Sanctum Viatas'

20

20

15

The Paladin can tap into magical pathways of a divine nature that riddle the spectral realm. Using these passages, he can travel instantaneously to a marked location, as per the Recall spell. However, in order to use this ability the Paladin must not be in combat, as he cannot summon the divine power needed if his purpose is of a cowardly or unchivalrous nature.

Divine Fury‘Divinum Furis'

10

15

25

Temporarily increases your swing speed, chance to hit, and damage dealt. The downside is that it will also temporarily lower your defenses. The duration of the spell is based on your karma level and hovers around 20 seconds at Glorious level.

Dispel Evil'Dispiro Malas'

10

15

35

Dispels evil summoned creatures and/or causes other evil creatures to flee from combat. When used against transformed necromancers, they could sustain mana and stamina losses if successfully forced to turn back into their normal form. The chances of successfully dispelling depend on the caster's karma level and chivalry skill, as well as the target's fame and necromancy skill.

Enemy of One'Forul Solum'

10

20

45

After casting this spell, the next target you hit will become your Mortal Enemy. Any damage you inflict to any creature of the same type will be enhanced. However, any damage you sustain from any creature other than your "mortal enemy" will also be increased. The duration of the spell is also affected by your karma level and last a little over 3 minutes at Glorious level. During that time, any creature of your Mortal Enemy type will highlight orange to you.

Holy Light'Augus Luminos'

10

15

55

This area spell will inflict damage on any non-blue creatures close to the caster. The amount of damage dealt to those creatures depends on your karma level. At Glorious level, the damage is 20-24 on average, normally 8-20.

Noble Sacrifice'Dium Prostra'

30

20

65

This is area spell will allow you to resurrect, cure and heal any blue player within spell casting range. In exchange, you will sacrifice all of you HP, mana and stamina but 1 or 2 points, ie. just enough to keep you alive. When successful, the resurrected patients will also be restored to up to 24 HP, according to the caster's karma and skills. There is no limit to the number of players that can be resurrected at once.

More complete nonsense added in the Age of Shadows.   The game was far better without this junk.  You spread your 700 points over however many skills you needed and had fun.  No constant money drain to keep you grinding forever.

Of course it did not help that the servers were literally down for two straight months after the release of Age of Shadows.  Probably the most bug ridden expansion pack ever released, although NGE would probably be right up there.

One thing I didn't like about the new UO changes is the Chivalry skill. Not so much because it's worthless, quite the contrary. I had such pride as a mage when I opened up a gate for my friends to go wherever we want. But once this came out everyone had enough chivalry to not only heal themselves instantly, but to recall without the magery skill. Just seems to take more of the fun out of being a mage.

adding more classes won't out WoW , WoW.

Amen to that. It's been said a billion times and MMO's really need to listen - If people want to play WoW, they'll play WoW. How many wanna be's are there now? And how many of them even come close to matching WoW's success? I'd ask myself "Do I want to be a copycat failure, or a niche market success?"
