It's more than just that. It is also about exploring, making social relationships, crafting, and overcoming PvE challenges. RvR is just one aspect of DAoC. It's a good concept, but it requires a healthy population. Something that DAoC doesn't have. Now BG's are more fun because they are smaller and you are more likely to run across other people. But in the 4 + years I played, I always took my time leveling, trying to explore different areas, instead of going to the areas with the best xp, I wore armor that looked cool, not player crafted ugly armor with perfect stats, I BG'ed at the busy ones and I enjoyed going on the raids and other PvE adventures. I RvRed mainly with my guild at the time and usually defended a keep or tower. That is what DAoC was to me. I played with different characters and none were cookie cutters. I would often times choose odd ball specs and find a way to use them to the specs strength.

In my opinion DAoC is all about RvR. (Realm vs Realm).

-lvl a character
-making template
-makin ML steps
-doin CL steps
-gettin XP for lvl Artifact

is all about prepearing for RvR to get more and more RPs.
And its good. Not so boring like WoW or the others. We can actualy fight against ppl and got a nice RvR system with taking keeps, siege, 8vs8 grps, RvR land etc...

I love it:D

I started DAoC a couple months ago,  I find the RvR to be fun.  Laying siege/defending can be pretty awesome..I still need to find a guild tho I think without a guild Im missing out on aspects of it.  While it can be fun,  I find it sort of lacking as well..could be because Im either Solo or in a PuG..not sure.

Still think UO was the best PvP I ever played.  Boy do I ever miss those days.

If I need heals Im not killing fast enough

I think those days are long gone.. I'd be surprised if Mythic makes a Mordred-type server (FFA PvP) in their new offering, WAR.

I used to love playing on Dred.... but its definitely past any sort of viability....

I like the rvr system in DAOC, but I don't agree that it is the best.

imo Shadowbane is a better pvp game where pvp actually affects the game world.

You own a city and can own more than one.

It really tests your skills as a nation leader.

You drop everything on death (except what you are wearing)

pvp is truly "open" - the only safe place is newbie island (good to lvl 20) then you are fair game.

DAoC hardly has the best PvP.

RvR is nice if you get a good fight, but good fights are 1 in a million. RvR is plagued with flaws..

1) New Frontiers- Way too big, too much time to travel, waste of time traveling, if no group to travel with you die by stealthers.
2) Grouping- Horrible if you don't have a guild. No one cares about you, you can't get a group easily, you practically have to YELL for an hour just to get into a group if you don't have a guild. Groups are constantly full, so if you happen to be the 41st person, there are 4 full groups of 8, and you are stuck alone. (I think 8 is the max, I forgot, haven't played in a few months.)
3) Unbalanced Population- Albion, Midgard, and Hibernia in New Frontiers and the Battlegrounds are unbalanced. Instead of 10v10v10, or 100v100v100, the populatin is more 30v10v15, 300v100v125 on almost all servers.
4) Numbers > Skill- Because of the unbalanced population, if you happen to be in the ONE full group in RvR, you'll instantly lose because the other two sides have TWO full groups.
5) Dark Age of Task Dungeons. Grind grind grind. The only way to get good in RvR is to get max level, max champ level, max everything, with at least RR5. Can you say grind? Grind grind grind grind grind. What's there to do to get all of that (excluding RR5)??? Grind, that's it. The same TD over and over and over.
6) No solo, no small group. Only 8v8, solo-stealth, or Zerg.
7) No instant-action. Takes 20 minutes at MINIMUM, and usually an hour just to get into the action. If you're lucky, you won't be instantly rolled by the group that outnumbers you 3:1.
8) Community Sucks. No one cares about you unless you're a hardcore player that has been around since forever or have been in the guild forever.
9) Casters Game- No room for any melee classes. I played a lvl 50 Mercenary. Offensive tank! In the battlegrounds I had a purpose. In New Frontiers? Nope. In New Frontiers, it's a ranged game. A caster's game. Tanks have no place in sieges, no place in NF at all. Nearly everyone on the enemy side AND on your side is a caster. Melee classes are of the uncommon variety, and on top of that, NF is built for ranged, and on top of that, if you rush in a siege, unless it's with 20 other melee (which would require a guild) then you're going to instantly be owned by the casters. The only good melee classes have in RvR is to sit there, wait, wait, sit there, wait, wait, and then AFTER the battle is over, rush in to finish off the 2 remaining enemies.

If you want to play DAoC, play a caster. It's a casters game. Also, prepare for long waits to join a group, long waits traveling in the group, and then long waits for the fighting to actually begin. Then roll your dice and hope you're lucky enough to not be instantly rolled y a group superior in numbers. Basically, to play the game you have to be a caster that's lucky.

So IMO, a horrible PvP set. Great if you get balanced 20v20 battles in a Battleground. Amazing if you get that. But the fact is, all the battlegrounds have unbalanced populations of 40v20v10 and NF is a caster's game where melee classes do nothing but die.

I would hate DAoC if it was "even" and "fair" all the time.  Life isnt fair, why does a game have to be?  it adds to the excitement.  I play a RR9 Scout, solo all the time, join up with (hate this term) zerg to defend or attack.  If im on a bridge and attack someone, then get jumped by a "stealth zerg"..hey, I didnt have to be on that bridge, I didnt have to attack, I took my chance and I won or I lost.

Sure, i bang the keyboard and say CRAP, damn zerg, i could have beaten them 1v1, but the unpredicabilty, the excitement of it all has kept me playing.

ffs Nitro! Join a good/friendly guild , or won't they accept you? or start your own group!

TDs actually gives less exp than staying out in the open now, 150% exp bonus in classic and SI. and 200% exp bonus in rvr-zones.

I miss Daoc to an extent. Id be playing right now if I knew there were more players than they are. Its sad, why is annoying Is the people who played the first month and have not ever given it another shot. I miss the days of fighting a zerg of hibs and then all of a sudden a small group of mids (the under populated realm at the time) came around the corner and owned everyone. Yes we bitched and screamed foul but we did so with a smile on our face.

With that said, I think shadowbane had the best overall pvp system. It wasnt complete though, big imbalances and bugs, but the general idea is very solid and I have hoped an awesome devloper like Myhic would pick up the shadowbane concept, player owned cities/siege/ territory and remake it.

PS-Cant wait for warhammer online.
