What else is there to say? Find a new engine, one that will smooth out the feel of this game, and watch the amount of subscribers you'll get.

With the original gameplay, and amazing PvP in this game, a new engine is all it needs for it to be the top game of today (instead of the top game of 5 years ago).

Thought i'd bump this, as i had a thought last night.

Since WAR is being built on DAoC's Engine, which will be new and improved and all that. Why not port DAoC onto there? The only major things they'll need to change is the animations, and i think DAoC will get a lot of life back into it which will give us something to do until WAR is released.

Ah well, no harm in wishing. ;P

I agree. Need something to spice up this game again. Been a very long time since console games appealed to me more than the Online MMOs. But its happening.

I don't know what engine you use, but the game looks awsome with the Darkness Rising client.

New character animations would really help a lot. The graphics are pretty good and go over fine with me, but the weird running/walking animation and stuff is pretty awkward.

I'd love to see DAoC get a fresh new engine! Combine that with an aggressive advertising campaign and do the 'come back to camelot' promotion again (free 30 days for people that have cancelled) and I'm sure we'd see a spike in subscribers!

Also breathing new life in to the PvE aspect of the game would do heaps of good for this MMO as this is a huge portion of the game.

DAoC with new graphics sounds like the best mmorpg ever since DAoC

The only way to keep it going stronger, no question about it.  New engine is the only answer.  Lots of the rest keep it!

I think we all agree on that the grafics of DaoC is good looking, but if you read between the lines it's the movements, animations and motion overall that needs to be upgraded.

A smoothness and animation overhall. And ofc the agressive advertising campain...

Just hope they dont do it the wrong way, and advertice first :P cause it wont work very good.

Is it possible to add a new engine? I mean if they could make the game look like EQ2 then there sub rate would sky rocket.

If they mde the game look like EQ2 it would be unplayable (many people have problems with EQ2).  You do not want 400 people on a relic raid with EQ graphics unless you want 390 of them to go LD.

DAOC use the gamebyro engine.  That engine is used in a lot of games.  The graphics engine is not the problem.  It depends on the art style.  If you look at WoW, they have a much lower polygon count than in DAOC. If you zoom into the armor and items on people in DAOC the detail is amazing.  That detail, though, does not show up in standard play.  Updating all of the artwork for the entire world as though it is a new game is also impossible.  They make constant changes, it just happens to be no one notices (or gives credit).

In terms of looks, DAOC is in the top 5 games on the market.  Certainly people can want better character movements, more detail to show up, etc. but that is not the engine problem.  I mean Elder Scrolls IV uses the same engine as DAOC.  Certainly I think the characters need some improvement (and variety) but that is about it.  Over the yers they have imporaced the grass, addes new trees, realiztic water, new housing models, and in fact and rebuilding towns from the ground up!  That is what you need for better graphics not a new engine.

(Not that I would not want a new engine since DAOC is s resource hog, just that I do not think it will address people's complaint about the looks).

I completely agree. DAoCs graphics are top notch if you ask me. The character animations are completely out dated and the control scheme and movements are out dated. I bet if Mythic could update the animation of DAoC and have the movement like WoW or Guild Wars that would breath new life into this once wonderful game.

When you strafe in DAoC it looks like your just side stepping, when you strafe in a modern MMO it looks like your well, strafing. I wonder what it would take to get Mythic to do these things. I tell you what if they did I bet there number subscriptions would go up a lot.

Then the other problem is, strafing looks different to other players from how you see yourself strafing.

They need to work in syncing the animations, too, as seeing someone float in the sky when they jump is a bit off-putting to melee classes (not to mention it just looks wrong ^^).

I keep trying to play DAoC as most of my friends are playing it. However, I cannot STAND how I control my movement in this game. The graphics are fine, it is just control that drivers me nuts. In WoW or Shadowbane, I can run in one direction while panning the camera in another easily. In DAoC, it is almost impossible. There needs to be a universal "interact" button. In Shadowbane it is the "F" key. It will loot corpses, start combat, open doors, pickup items, ect ect.., in DAoC, I am constantly trying to figure out how to even talk to people, everything requires a slightly different control. I want USER FRIENDLY in a game. DAoC does not have that, at all. Once it does, I will be a loyal player.

I think if they made it so you didn't have to grind thirty levels in an instance dungeon before you got to start playing the game, that would do more fore the subscription rate than a new graphics engine.

You haven't been in game recently?  With bonus's in SI and rvr zones not many are in the task dungeons anymore.  I leveled a Heretic 0-32 this afternoon -- also had no trouble finding people to group and no i was not on classic...  I'll wait till 39 to go to Molvik and stay there for awhile -

I also consider PVE - part of the game - funny thought for most I know...

edit - no I was not getting power leveled either.

Ehmm i don't think it's really worth uppgradig the graphics, how can the graphics be so important for you that you decide to boycott a game just for it's graphics? I think you should leave the mmo market and play oblivion instead.

heck give me a game with original EQ-graphics with great content and i will play it. And i don't see whats wrong with DAOC graphics, it's not far from the quality of EQ2 graphics.

I agree about the general movement. I recently renewed my account and found the graphics all very nice but it seems the engine can not keep up.. The overall ui needs updating as well. You should be able to simply add items to the quickbar for example and just use them. Quickbinding keys and mouse buttons should be made a lot more simple.

Overall though the game is excellent.. bags of content that could be taken and added to a sequel. Package it with a newer game engine, sprinkle in a load of other content and you could market Daoc 2 easily.

It would be terrible to see all this just end up being gently phased out tbh

hmm, would it really bring more people to daoc if Mytchic improves the animations? I don't think so

You don't? Consider the reason most players have tried, and not continued to play DAoC... because they feel it's outdated, and rightly so, as it is.

Now that EA Mythic have announced that Warhammer Online will be delayed until 2008, I think that they could spare some time improving the animations, and even updating DAoC to the updated engine. I know that I for one would play DAoC again if it was cleaned up, and I would think it could do very well in numbers, now that EA could throw a little advertising out.

Anyone would have to admit, the RvR in this game is like no other. Smashing down, and taking over castles was freaking fun!
