Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is an action RPG taking place between J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Players will take on the role of a Ranger known as Talion through an open world, explorable game. Talion is no ordinary Ranger, however, since he also possesses some of the powers of a Wraith after being killed alongside his family, then revived. In his quest for revenge in Mordor, Talion will tackle many challenges (including optional quests and plenty of exploration opportunities) in players’ hands. Leveling up both sides of his abilities will be key, as your stealth and knowledge of the world will come in handy in some places, while the Wraith abilities might allow you to do things such as coerce out valuable information or have enemies lose morale.
Central to this game is something called the Nemesis system, which promises to be a source of player impact upon the game. The system will decide, based upon player actions, the outcome of certain characters you’ll meet along the way, and keep ongoing recognition going. Defeat someone in a battle a while back? He just might reappear in another position later and recognize you too. Monolith is working with Peter Jackson’s team to ensure continuity between the films and story in the game. The Rings will play some part in the game’s story, and it has been revealed that Gollum will appear, further typing the games and books together in LOTR-based RPG goodness.
