  • 5 Awesome Buy-to-Play MMOs

Buy-to-play MMOs are becoming more and more popular around the industry. It’s clear that free-to-play games are expanding and they're becoming more and more popular, but they’re not the only alternative to subscription based games. Even for MMOs, options exist for you to buy the game itself (or a registration code, in most instances) then never have to pay another dime again, unless you want to.

Ubisoft’s The Crew might be a good overall indication of what we can expect from MMOs in the next several years. How you look at that statement could be a good or a bad thing. I spent the better part of last night and this morning delving into the live service of Ivory Tower’s racing MMO. Though I don’t think we’ll need the usual 4-5 weeks to come to a conclusion about The Crew’s performance, because there are only so many different things you can do behind the confines of a car.

  • PAX 2014: Hands on

Games like Mario Kart, which remained mostly about just getting out there on super fun tracks, and games that took on a more realistic approach and went the way of tons of DLC and unlockables. I’ve mostly found myself playing Mario Kart as my racer of choice, but when Ubisoft unveiled The Crew, I met the announcement with interest. An MMORPG and racing game? In one? How would that work?

  • PAX Prime 2014 Awards

Well the end of summer is here. For most of us that means back to school in some form or work in another. This year at PAX Prime we saw a host of AAA titles and Indie Games that will shape the landscape entering into the final half of the year and the first few months of 2015. With a major presence by top publishers we are still in awe of the powerful independent game movement that is sweeping the industry.

  • An Online Version of Cannonball Run

Want to race? How about we take some missions from a massive underground circuit of street racers. Or maybe we just drive cross country? Even better, lets get our Crew together and enter into a massive multiplayer online version of the Cannonball Run. All of those elements make The Crew a premiere racing game, that is happily very much an MMORPG. We were very surprised by the game and while all of us here play MMOs, not all of us are racing fans, but we are now.

  • A True Racing MMORPG

We only had a brief fifteen minute demo and interview with the dev team (both going on at once) to get a feel for the driving and general overview of The Crew. There are 3rd person and first person driver’s seat views, and there’s a good chance that Oculus Rift and Sony’s own VR will be supported down the line. Racing games, along with FPS titles, are ideal for that kind of headgear, in my eyes. This is one to watch, folks.
