The Heroes of the Storm site has been updated with a detailed look at the many changes made to the game's match-making system since Blizzcon 2015 held in early November last year. According to the blog post, match-making updates have been deployed and the team is excited about the results collected so far, though the system is still a work in progress with more alterations coming.
Some of the improvements rolled out to date:
Fair matches - each team has a 45%-55% chance to win
The likelihood that new players will be matched against veterans has been reduced, at this point about 5 in 10,000 games
Team composition rules that, for instance prevent the matching of a team with two or more Warriors against a team with no Warriors. This same rule has also been applied to Support heroes. This is still a work in progress
The likelihood that a five-player party is matched against teams of solo players has been reduced to about 29 in 10,000 matches
Hero League that reduces the chance that Rank 1 players will be matched against others at or below Rank 4
Certain heroes will be limited to one per team including Abathur, Cho'gall, Lt. Morales, Murky, Nova and the Lost Vikings
Queue times have increased some, but this is largely due to the implementation of the new rules and systems
