I figured I'd write this up to address the common questions and troubles people have as a new AO player that I've seen posted here and asked in game. I've really aimed this at the newbie fr00b since I expect those in SL to know their way around well enough already and could always post in the AO forums. This has some info also found in the AO site and/or manual but also is meant to go beyond the scope of the manual which I strongly recommend all players, especially new ones download and read (there is also a version you can view in the AO site). Please note that they finally updated the manual late in 2005 and made a few revisions since then, the current one is quite good and answers most of the questions I see new players asking in game.

Note:
Due to the size I had to split this up over multiple posts so to make things easier used one post per section. This should leave plenty of space for edits as I could get almost all of it in just the one post. I don't expect people to read all of this, just read the ones of interest. You can use your browsers search function to get to a topic more easily. You could also save this page, copy the text to a text file or print it out. Although ones I would suggest all new players to read in addition to those that answer their questions are A-08, B-08, B-09, B-10, C-01, C-02 and C-03.

I also did not write all of this for this post. Almost all of the B and C ones I wrote over time and added to personal help files I can access while playing for my own reference or so I can just copy paste in answers for others. Then at least some of those in A section I had answered one or more times in the past here or elsewhere so just found and added them in. As a result most of this was just copy pasted together from things I wrote over my time playing AO.

Before Playing

A-01 Is it Really Free?
Yes and no. After its release AO has added the Notum Wars (NW) booster pack then the Shadowlands (SL), Alien Invasion (AI) and Lost Eden (LE) expansion packs. While everyone plays on the same servers free players (fr00bs) are restricted to the professions, gear, locations and options of the original AO game and NW (NW was added to the fr00b deal in late 2006) which is still quite a lot and has been added to over time.

Currently free play of classic AO and NW is until early 2008 but so long as that offer does not cause them too many troubles expect them to continue lengthening that period (has already been lengthened multiple times). The MMORPG.com trail offer refers to a free 14 day trail of the original, NW and SL expansion, once that ends though you either start paying to play or you will no longer be able to play using that account.

.

A-02 Is it Complicated?
Getting around, using the interface, interacting with game elements and doing the missions/quests are all pretty straight forward. You should be able to get around and do things just fine without much trouble so long as you pay attention and think things through a bit. No one thing in AO is difficult, it's just that there are many aspects to building and using your character and other options so it can seem rather overwhelming at first. Also while how the user interface may be similar to some other MMORPGs as with all others there are differences you'll have to get used to as well. Just give it some time, think and pay attention and you'll be just fine. Although even those playing for years are still learning new things every so often so don't expect to master AO overnight.

If you spend some time looking over your options with the help of various info sites on AO you should be fine and be able to make up your own build. You can also look in the profession specific forums in the AO official forums for help (anyone can read them but you need to be a paying player to post in them). There's a good bit of possible and usable variations not just between professions but builds of a profession as well. It takes a bit of time and thought but I'd sooner do that than be like just about every other char my level of a given profession.

.

A-03 Getting Started (Downloading & Patching)
1. Get the client.
2. Register an account.
3. Install.
4. Patch.
5. Log-in and play.

1. Go to the Game Download page and select either the small (about 800 MB) or large (about 1400 MB) client. The small client is only for free play while the large one will allow you to play for free or any of the expansions. You can get either by way of a BitTorrent download or through various listed download sites. With a BitTorrent download you will get a small torrent file from the AO download pages then need to open that up in a BitTorrent client and let it download everything. You can use the official BitTorrent client or a host of other ones (personally I like Azureus).

.
If you're new to BitTorrent:
The small Torrent file provides info to your BitTorrent client on the data you're trying to get and info on the related server/s. The data itself is not downloaded from the servers but in pieces from other users, the servers just help people find other users (serverless options are coming around though). The data being shared is broken down into blocks and those blocks into smaller chunks. Your client will then download the data from others that have one or more completed blocks. Then once you have one or more complete block you will then share that info with others as well.

Once you have it all the client will continue sharing it with others until you stop it. It is a good idea to let it share as much as you've downloaded (100%+ share or a 1+ share ratio). With lots of people sharing some to all of the data downloading something with BitTorrent can move along quite well.
.

2. While the game is downloading you could register your AO account. As a new player it would be a good idea to get used to it the basics of playing by playing for free for a while. Once you've got the hang of things and if you're thinking of going P2P there's the MMORPG.com 14 day SL trial offer which gives you a trial code. Also Funcom offers 7 day upgrade trials for either expansion which include NW but if you decide you don't want to keep playing you'd need to cancel the account before either traials end or your credit card will be billed. Please note that both trial and paid accounts are not reverted to free accounts when their period expires and cancelling a trial account will likely result in the deletion of all related data including player accounts and characters. Also you will need the large client to use any of the expansions.

3. In the downloaded folders you'll find a setup.exe file, run that. If the installer asks for numbered disks when installing browse to the main folder you just downloaded and select the folder with the same disk name that was requested (disk1-disk3).

4. The game version you've downloaded will likely not be the current one and the main folder you just downloaded will have the version in the name (AOInstall16.0.0_EP1_EP2_live = large client version 16.0.0). Rather than using batch patching AO applies each of the required patches one at a time in sequence. Once installed you can run AO then let the patcher get the patches and use them or you can download each of them from the AO site. If you download them get the ones from the version you have to the current version on the servers. Also if you download them yourself from SL/15.x on there are two of each patch (ex. 16.0.0 - 16.0.1 and 16.0.0_EP1 - 16.0.1_EP1). The ones ending with EP1 are for those with the large client, the ones without are for those with the small client, make sure you get the right ones.

The patcher may need to restart one or more times as it patches from your downloaded version to the version on the servers when it hits certain updates. So there is no problem if it restarts and says you need to patch some more. Then in the bar at the top of the log-in window it shows what version your client is at and what version is in use on the servers, until those match you will need to patch further.

Since patches are applied one at a time what I like to do is download them from the AO site, use an app like WinRAR to extract the files in the "Patches" folder each contain and save them in one folder I could back up to a CD later on. Should I need to reinstall for some reason I just put all those files into a single "Patches" folder and put that into the main AO game folder. When the patcher goes to work it finds the patches in that folder so won't need to download them, just verify and install them.

5. Start up AO, enter your account info in the log-in window, log-in, select create a new character (not that you have a choice), make a new character and off you go.

.

A-04 I let it Patch but it Says I Need to Patch Again
AO does not do batch patching but goes through each patch one at a time to get the installed version up to date with what is on the servers. During this process the patcher may need to restart one or more times as it moves along. So there is no problem if it restarts and says you need to patch some more. Then in the bar at the top of the log-in window it shows what version your client is at and what version is in use on the servers, until those match you will need to patch further. (See point four in the above topic for more info on patching.)

.

A-05 What do the Expansions Add?
All add more gear of one type or another. NW added towers that add bonuses to characters in the org which own them and are used in PvP tower battles as well. SL adds two new profs and a large new area to explore filled with many new mobs which generally provide quite a bit more XP than equivalent planet side mobs allowing for faster levelling. Twenty extra character levels are added with SL as well as perks to improve your character. AI adds player owned cities and the alien attacks that go with them. There are AI levels, new AI perks and the global market search for player sold items found in AI city shops. Lost Eden (LE) added new alien missions, the PvP battle stations, gear, nanos, mechs, character skill/ability bonuses and so forth. Generally speaking the gear in each addition has been progressively although the combined AI armours in some ways are still better than the new LE armours depending on what you're after.

.

A-06 What OSs does AO Play Under?
Windows 98 and higher are what it was made for but people have figured out how to get it playable under Linux as well (see the two links below).

Since the graphics engine is still based heavily on the power of your CPU and not your graphics card it is possible that it may play on a Power PC based Mac running Virtual PC or something like it, your results will not be that great though. Although for those with an Intel based Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) will have an option that lets you install and run Windows natively on your Mac with usable drivers for your video card and other hardware so you can play games and do other things perfectly well. At this time Apple is open beta testing this function which they've called Boot Camp so those with 10.4 (Tiger) should be able to use it once completed as well.

Official AO forums thread with info on running AO under Linux.
The AO forum that thread it is found in.

Note: Anyone can read the official AO forums but only paying players can post in them.

.

A-07 ATI or nVIDIA?
AO unfortunately has always had problems with ATI cards which can cause it to crash at times so if possible play with a system using a nVIDIA graphics card. A patch in 2005 did help address ATI issues which using an ATI card myself I can say helped but still you'd be better off with a nVIDIA card.

.

A-08 Graphics, Lag and Performance Tips
The graphics in AO are nice but not amazing, the new stuff found in each of the expansions are progressively a little better looking than those from the original AO though. The biggest problem comes from the old graphics engine AO has always used which is based heavily on the power of your CPU making little use of the high powered graphics cards of today. Due to this as far as your system is concerned what will make the biggest differences in AOs performance is the power of your computers CPU and how much RAM you have. They have made changes to how txtures and animation is handled by the engine in the 16.4 series of patches which has generally improved performance.

A new engine that makes better use of the graphics cards of today was announced and is expected to be completed in about a year or so (mid 2008 or there abouts). This is just an engine upgrade, at that point they are not planing to upgrade the textures as well but have said that it will then allow them to make things look better over time. The new engine is just the first step and should also lower client lag due to the amount of graphic effects and items being managed quite a bit as well.

For now though the two places you'll get the most lag are while running around in player AI cities on Rubi-Ka or anywhere with a lot of players grouped together. To get AO running smoothly you'll need to tinker with the graphics settings available to you in the settings options of the log-in window. There are various graphical extras you can disable while in game (press F10 for the options window and select the Preferences tab) without having to restart like clouds, nano effects, environmental effects, client side wildlife and others. Then two other such options that really help are the two distance ones. Press F10 in game, then select Preferences > Visual > View Distance and move the two sliders there to the left as much as needed. Those control how far another player needs to be for you to see them (you'd still see their names floating there, just not them) and how far you can see things like trees, objects and the like clearly. After some tweaking you should be in good shape. Although if you know you'll be going into a good sized PvP battle or raid it would be a good idea to lower your setting somewhat ahead of time.

Other basic things to improve performance is to have plenty of bandwidth available so something faster than dial-up and don't download things while playing. Also close as many apps as possible when running the game and you could try restarting the system before playing as well.

Aside from that you can get more RAM and make sure the RAM you have is working properly. Even if it shows the right amount and everything usually seems fine some small faults in your RAM can cause system crashes and the like. Some utility programs have an option to check your RAM then if you search online for something related to "RAM memory check" or something like that you should be able to find some sites with those available. There are at least a couple decent free ones you could try, such as Memtest86. It's best to get your RAM from better suppliers like Crucial and all of the same exact type.

A fast hard drive, lots of available space on your drives and a maintained/clean install of Windows helps too. Bigger drives are good for the space, but they are slower than the smaller ones so it's good to have two physical drives, one small one to put your OS and programs on and another for all your various files. Also Windows can act funny if your drives are too full so make sure additional drives/partitions have at least 10% free and that your main one has as much free as possible for virtual RAM and temp files. There are various apps like the Norton Utility ones and SpeedUpMyPC which will help clean out the junk and fix up the registry or tweak things to avoid at least some errors you can run into.

Also one crashing problem that has occured with those playing free in the past had to do with the ads shown in game. Cleaning out the medicache folder in your main AO folder occasionally (as in once a week or something like that) fixes that problem right up. If you're paying to play you can turn ads off and then there are no billboards in the Shadowlands. As far as I know this error has long since been corrected.

.

A-09 How Much Does it Cost if I go P2P?
There are two costs, the one time upgrade costs to add new expansions and recurring subscription costs. For about one to two years now they have been alternating between different deals every month or two to get fr00bs to start paying to play. At the time this was written paying by the month is just under $15 US but if you pay for a one year package it averages out to just under $8 US per month (you pay for packages all at once when billing starts though). There are also other packages aside from those, the below pages should list current pricing info for you.

.

A-11 Is there PvP?
Yes but PvP in AO is largely optional. Most areas will not be PvP areas while some areas of some zones, areanas in a couple cities, a PvP dungeon in Stret West Bank (The Will to Fight - 2240, 310) and this one bar in Mort offer open PvP as well as a building in player AI cities (most of these will be empty these days due to other PvP options). The ones outside will be optional areas, areas you can go around or places you wouldn't be looking to go to till higher levels plus with a yalm you can fly too high to be hit. Typically available combat is based on the percentage of suppression gas in that area. 100% prevents combat, 75% allows combat with mobs, 25% adds combat with players of different sides, 5% lets you also attack those of your own side but not org while 0% also lets those in your org but not on your current team. You will be notified when the gas level changes and be given time to get out before the affect initiates.

Players can also be flagged which makes them open to attack almost anywhere and from anyone outside of their current team. Then once you attack a flagged player you will also be flagged. You can tell that someone is flagged when their name has asterisks (*) on either side, how long this will last varies (you'll find a nano running in your NCU). If you're looking to be flagged the easiest way is to attack a guard and then live through the experience. Easiest way to do that is to target the guard then hit the attack button twice quickly, setting your Agg/Def slider (lower right corner) to full defense to slow your attack rate isn't a bad idea.

Lost Eden (third expansion pack) added the PvP battle stations where you can go for group PvP. You can also attack towers in notum fields (requires a shield disabler which you can buy in tower shops) with a team to get some PvP action so long as the org controlling the field can send some people in the right level range to fight you (the Notum Wars booster pack was added to the fr00bs deal a while back).

A-12 Can I Solo in AO?
Yes if you really wanted you should in time manage to get level cap and do various other things with a character on your own. But if you want to play a MMORPG on your own all the time you're playing the wrong kind of game and should stick with single player games and/or regular multi-player ones. You will be much better off teaming with people as you can get more XP and better items than you ever could on your own and there are some things you really can't hope to do on your own. It will take much longer to do things and level if you're on your own and you'd likely be doing missions for ever on end if you're a fr00b which you'll get tired of soon enough and then you'll dislike playing. If you want to play a MMORPG you really do need to realize that the other people playing it are for you to do more than sell to, buy from or PvP with, you can actually play with them too.

Starting Out

.

B-01 What are good Professions for a Newbie?
Adventurers, enforcers and martial artists are the easiest profs to use. Martial artists don't have too many nanos and while they generally don't use weapons they can use special attacks which you could buy, find, earn through missions or by collecting items. They can do good damage, have pretty decent healing abilities and have the easiest to get nano lines as all their non-expansion nanos but the small fear line are buyable or rollable. Enforcers are for taking and dishing out lots of damage. They don't have a lot of nanos and are good with most any type of melee weapons. Adventurers are good dual wielders using one handed edge weapons or pistols. They also can shape change into various things and have other nanos that provide protection, damage shields or healing.

If I were to pick one I would say a martial artist would be your best starter character. You could then use that one to get the items you need for future characters and earn creds.

.

B-02 How does the Breed I Pick Affect my Profession?
The cost and max values of your six base abilities are affected by your breed as well as how much health and nano you get for the points you invest and per level. If you have the expansions there are also breed specific perks. All the other skills are only affected by the prof you chose. In regards to the cost of maxing all your six base abilities and the number you get Opifex are the cheapest. Atrox cost the least total IP to max but also have the least total ability points too. Solitus and Nanomage are around the middle of the other two. The look and sex of your character has no affect except that there are a few things that will require a certain sex or breed but the vast majority don't.

Nanomage:
Nanomage can have the most nano of all the breeds and have access to a few neat Nanomage only items that can boost their nano skills or intelligence. Their higher intelligence and those Nanomage only items mean they can use higher QL nanos sooner than other breeds which is nice for low to mid level twinks of nano skill dependant profs.

On the down side they will also have the least health of all the breeds and eventually any breed of any prof can use all their nanos. So for characters you intend to take to level cap there really isn't much advantage in going with a Nanomage, especially if you have the expansions.

Atrox:
Atrox will have the least nano of all the breeds and it will take a bit longer for an Atrox of a prof to use their various nanos than any of the other breeds.

On the other hand they will have more health than any other breed and as eventually they will be able to use all the nanos of any prof for high level PvP chars most people will go with an Atrox for any prof. Also limited nano is much easier to deal with than limited health.

Opifex & Solitus:
These two are the middle of the road breeds that will work nicely for any prof. More health than Nanomage but less than Atrox plus more nano than Atrox but less than Nanomage. Between the two though Solitus will have a bit more health than Opifex.

.

B-03 I Just Made and Named my Character, Now What?
When you name your char you will see two buttons that let you choose between starting on Rubi-Ka or in SL if you have SL and aren't playing a shade or keeper. Due to the easy AI XP starting on RK is still a good idea if you have the expansions, you can always go in the SL starter area till level 50 anyhow. If starting on RK you'll find yourself on a beach.

You should see a doctor NPC standing not too far in front of you near the rock wall and a ground light, talk to him (right click him to open NPC chat) and that alone will give you enough XP to get level two (that only gives XP while level one) and gets you some starter items. When talking to him he will offer you a simple quest to find some local wildlife. Running around pressing the tab button is the easiest way to do it, if facing the rock wall the first two are to the right, the other two to the left. Do that and talk to him again, tell him you found them all and you'll be asked to do a second quest to go back through them and kill each one once in the same order. Do that then go back to him again and tell him you killed one of each. Doing each quest gives some XP and some credits plus two nodrop items, a light bar (best light source in the game) and a rather nice newbie NCU belt. The way the belt works now is you get one version of it at first then when you ask the doctor what you're suppose to do with it you'll be told to show it to another NPC named Antonio. Once you're shown the belt to Antonio you get the proper version of the belt and one small NCU memory module you can equip once you have the belt on. Before moving on you should level up some on the reets and leets there.

To get to Antonio on the main platform from where you start run down the beach with the rock wall on your right till you get to a tunnel in the rock wall (second quest NPC is there too). Run down the tunnel and the one that follows it then when you exit the second tunnel there will be a ramp in front of you and a bit to the right. Run up that ramp and the two that follow it then once at the top turn left so there is a fence on your left and a wall to your right. Run straight and then up the small ramp ahead of you and you'll see Antonio (always people around him) in front and to the right of you a ways and Travis a ways further ahead (bald guy in black).

Another thing you can do with the doctor is to exchange three of the monster parts you may find when killing animal mobs for a collection of basic low QL recovery items (last I checked you must do his two quests before he'll accept them). You can trade those in as often as you want to get more and can then stack the items by picking them up in your inventory and dropping them on those of the same type and QL (don't get too many as the QL is very low). To hand items in to an NPC right click on him then click on the hand icon with a box in it at the bottom of their dialog window to bring up a little window to put the items and/or credits in to then press the check mark button on that small window. Those med items will be given to you at a QL equal to your level plus one and cap at QL six.

If you run down the beach you will hit another NPC at a tunnel with more quests for you to do. First you'll be asked to kill some certain mobs you'll find roaming the beach further down which earns you a bracer with +20 to your max health. Next you will need to find and select each of the mob bosses on the beach, these will come in order starting from the far end beyond the doctor near where you started and all along the edge of the beach away from there. Since people often kill these bosses though (for the quest you just need to select them) this can be somewhat annoying. This quest gives you a range meter which you could also make which can be a much easier way to get it at times. If you do the second quest you'll be sent to another NPC.

This next NPC is on the other end of a tunnel near the docks on the other side of the island (go through the two tunnels near the bio researcher you just helped, straight and to the left from there and through another tunnel, he's just to the left once you exit the tunnel). He will ask you to collect various parts from different mobs and one basic island weapon in return he gives you an upgraded version of that weapon. Next he sends you out to kill a series of robot mobs and the two robot mob bosses on the docks. In return you get a back pack to store stuff in (right click to open, don't wear it). The order of these two quests apparently can differ depending on if you came to him from the prior NPC or not. Once the second quest is done he sends you off to Travis on the main platform.

On the main platform behind Antonio and against the wall you will see a kind of vending machine like thing, this is a shopping terminal selling sets of early level profession specific nano programs you should buy before leaving, right click it to open the shop window (only one set for each profession, they cost about 1500 credits for each set). Then on the one side of Antonio are five NPCs. One is the neutral observer then there is a recruiter and merchant for both Clan and Omni. Before you went up that last ramp to get to the area Antonio and the others are on you would have seen a break in the fence to your left, this is where you can find the Clan medic and Omni unicorn commander you're sent to see by Travis for the island shoulder pads quest. Near Travis is a large door, this is where the whom-pahs (teleporters) off the island are located. Travis will offer you various small quests you can do for different pieces of newcomer armour and starts off the two island sided shoulder pads quests. Then Antonio offers items and tells you how to upgrade your starter weapons, the Clan and Omni merchants sell badges to upgrade newcomer armour if you belong to either side as well as other items.

.
A Mini Guide of What you Should do and When on the Island:
The above is basic and what many end up doing but not really that efficient. Below is a more effective pattern to follow.

-Talk to the doc for level 2 and your starter gear but do not take any of his quests yet.
-Kill reets and leets till level 6.
-Upgrade your weapons. If you are Clan or Omni buy a set of low QL newcomer armour (cheaper that way) and upgrade it to sided newcomer armour.
-If you do not have the AI expansion go after droids and waste collectors till level 8 then stalkers and salamanders on the far beach till level 10 or 11. Next do all the quests of interst to you, get and do any other things you want before leaving then go as there is really nothing left for you.
-If you do have the AI expansion and are going for level 15 to fill the AI XP bar a third time (don't bother if you have LE) go after droids and waste collectors till level 8 then stalkers and salamanders on the far beach till level 11. Now go back and do all the quests from NPCs then try to team up for alien scouts the rest of the way (specialists are a waste of time really).
-If you do have the AI expansion but you are not going for level 15 do all the quests of interest to you, kill spiders till you fill your AI XP bar twice, get and do any other things you want then go.

.
Before You Leave Check List:
-Upgrade your weapon (talk to Antonio about what item you need, use the adaption factory he sells on that item then the result on your weapon). Do this after you're done with reets and leets (if you will be dualing weapons you can just upgrade the one now and use the quest for the other one).
-Make a full set of sided newcomer armour if you went Clan or Omni (buy the armour pieces at the lowest QL possible and upgrade those, try zoning in and out the teleport tower door to try for a different GS with different QL pieces for sale) or a Salamander Vest if you're staying Neutral, an NT or a Doc (the formula for a Salamander Vest is: (Antonio's adaption factory + Rollerrat Intestines) + swatch of Salamander).
-Get a Range Meter from the quest or make one (the formula for a Range Meter is: (Antonio's adaption factory + power supply) + (Antonio's adaption factory + optical enhancer), buy the adaption factories and find the other two items off of droids).
-Buy your profession nano pack from the shop terminal near Antonio.
-Get two of the sided shoulder pads for your side if you're Clan or Omni.
-Do all the doctor quests plus see Antonio about the belt.
-Do the newcomer armour quests Travis gives you.
-Do the quest for the +20 max health bracer and any of the other quests from the two NPCs near the tunnels you want to do (those can be time consuming and annoying plus don't offer anything too special).

.
Where to Find the mobs for the Newcomer Armour Quests:
From Antonio and the other NPCs run back towards the ramps that go down to the ground level but don't go down them. Instead of turning right to go down the ramps turn left and through the fence gap. Once you're through that the path leads left or right. To the left is a platform with the bots you're suppose to kill for one of the quests. The right leads to the area with the aliens and the other platforms. If you enter that area and move along the left edge the first platform you hit will have more bots, the next will have rollerrats and shuttle saboteurs then the last has climbing salamanders and giant snakes in a large grassy area.

A couple things to take note of is that the bots, shuttle saboteurs and climbing salamanders will run over to help out if one of their buddies is under attack so be careful of that and try to attack ones away from others. This is something you'll see with other mobs later on as well, while some won't care if one of their buddies is under attack other types will all come over and swarm you. They won't react this way when they have grey life bars in most cases though. Mind you there are some that will always be hostile to you no matter how much higher in level you are.

One other thing is that the shuttle saboteurs and rollerrats may end up floating around in the water under the platform they spawn on for one reason or another so if you don't see them, you'll likely find them down there. To get at them you'll need a bow or non-upgraded rifle (the rifle looses range when upgraded). Get on the edge of the platform, target them and start the attack, this will cause them to start swimming to shore. Now run to the bridge between this platform and the main one, hop down to ground level and start attacking them from shore. Another thing you could do is try for a different GS by going in and out of the Teleport Tower

.
Where to Find the boss mobs:
From where you start out if facing the rock wall turn right and follow the edge of the beach till you hit there is no more land, this is our starting point all the other beach ones will be one after the other from here if you follow the shoreline. It should also be noted that at times it is seems the mobs don't always spawn in every GS or someone (likely just to be annoying) had the mob chase them a long ways from their usual spot.
Snake: This will spawn at the above starting point.
Leet: On a small outlet just before the tunnel from the beach where the second quest NPC is.
Salamander: Just after the tunnel and near some rocks away from shore.
Other Lizard: This one is a good ways down, no real landmark but it's right on shore and around the middle of the area with the stalkers and other mobs.
Rollerrat: Just follow the beach till you hit the end.

The two bot bosses are on the docks after Adri Afeli.
Android: From Adri Afeli go down to the docks, go right up the little ramp then go straight to the fence. There's a hole in the fence there, go in that then turn left and go down a ramp to a long narrow pier. It spawns on the end of this pier and looks like a big cargo droid mob.
Junkbot: From the andriod one go back up the ramp then you want to go to the end of the large pier to the left that has many alien spiders running around on it and is broken near the end. It looks like the bots you kill for one of the newcomer armour quests.

.
Regarding Island Drops:
The drop table of newbie island mobs keeps getting changed. Early on the mobs and dyna mobs dropped anything in their QL range they were capable of dropping like those off the island so you could get weapons, various bonus rings, nanos, instruction disks, implants, armour with bonuses and other things plus it was possible to come back. Since then there is now no way to get back and the drop table has become more and more restricted. Patches since then has resulted in the removal of all weapons, most armour, implants, nanos, instruction disks, rings, gems, bracelets, notum, robot junk and all alien drops by the looks of things. At one point it was set so everything on the base level, especially dyna mobs dropped take me to the shops, now nothing on the island does with dyna mobs now only dropping some cheap armour parts making killing them of no real value. So now the only ones running around with rings, AI weapons and other things will be those that set up island mules a ways back.

.

B-04 What Happens if I Die?
For the first fourteen levels, nothing, you just get reformed near the last insurance terminal you used, where you started in the starter area while on the island or arrived when you left the island. At both levels fifteen and twenty a new penalty is added. After you hit level fifteen when you die your skill and ability levels will start off quite low then they will slowly increase till they return to your normal levels after a few minutes or so. After you hit level twenty you lose any XP you gained since levelling or last used an insurance terminal, which ever of the two was the most recent. That XP will be placed in a pool you will recover as you gain new XP (acts like a +50% XP buff and ignores XP caps), you will never de-level though.

Once you leave the island you will find insurance terminals/cell scanners in all cities and around some cities (does not include player built AI cities). These look like a little vending machine with a blue top and two thin arms on the sides (there's a picture on page 59 of the manual). It will cost you some credits to use them, how much depends on your level and the city you're in. Using an insurance terminal keeps all the XP you gained up to that point safe from being lost should you die. There used to be more penalties and potential penalties but those have been removed. You can also save in SL gardens/sanctuaries and AI XP can not be saved from loss, if an alien kills you some AI XP will most likely be lost.

.

B-05 How do I Attack?
Select a target and press the "Q" key on your keyboard (that's the attack shortcut key). The attack icon placed in your shortcut bar is a little cross hairs icon and could be used as well. You can select a target by left clicking on it or using the tab key to cycle between targets. Once you initiate an attack your character will keep using your equipped weapon or fists till you stop attacking or one of you is dead. Use of combat nanos, special attacks and perks is done manually through shortcut keys or your shortcut bar.

When a target is selected you will see a little life bar show up with their name and the life bar will also show up above the target as well. If the ends of their life bar in your UI are red the target is in range of your equipped weapon, if not it isn't. Take note that attack nanos may have a longer or shorter range than your weapon but those indicators only show if it is in your weapons range.

The colour of their life bar shows the target's level compare to yours. Grey means it is so far below your level killing it will give only 1 XP. Green means it is below your level but will still give some modest XP. Yellow means its level is about the same as yours. Orange means its level is above yours while red means its level is a fair bit to much higher than yours. The length of the bar also hints to the amount of health it has.

.

B-06 How do I Run?
Press the backspace key on your keyboard to toggle between run and walk while you are standing (doesn't work when sitting). Then 0 on the number pad is the auto run key which comes in handy when traveling long distances. Another way to auto run would be to for instance press and hold the "W" key or up arror key press and hold the shift key, release your movement direction key then release the shift key.

.

B-07 Using the Shortcut Bar
The shortcut bar has ten slots and ten lists of slots allowing for 100 slots then starting in patch 17.4 (I think) you can also use up to ten shortcut bars giving you up to 1000 slots. You can put actions, nanos, macros, usable items from your main inventory and things you are wearing in the shortcut bar. Actions like attack, sit, exit, reload and weapon specials can be found in the action window (ctrl+2). To add an action from that window left click and hold, drag out of the window and it will appear on your pointer, release the left mouse button, move the pointer to the shortcut slot you want to put it and left click. With most other things you just need to left click it to put it on the pointer then drop it on the shortcut slot you want.

Pressing shift + numbers 1-0 on the main part of your keyboard will let you select your desired shortcut lists quickly on the active shortcut bar. To change the active shortcut bar pres alt + numbers 1-0 on the main part of your keyboard but you will first need to set it so more than one shortcut bar is displayed from your options window. Pressing just numbers 1-0 on the main part of your keyboard will select related shortcut action on the select list of the active shortcut bar. You can toggle the orientation of the shortcut bar from vertical to horizontal by right clicking on the tab on the far left end when it's horizontal or at the top when vertical. You can also put weapons and armour in the shortcut bar to allow you to change gear you alternate between often without having to opening up the inventory and wear windows. Macros to initiate various actions or scripts can also be put in your shorcut bar.

.

B-08 Basic Chatting
You start out with one chat window which will let you receive vicinity and your factions newbie channel plus some other basic ones. The talk channel you start in is vicinity which only lets you talk to those in the immediate area but that can be changed in different ways. The easiest way to switch to a channel you see someone chatting in is to just click on the channel name in the chat window. To switch to any of your available channels right click on the chat window and select a channel in the "talk to channel" list. Another way is to press the enter key so you can start typing but before typing anything press the tab key which brings up a selection list, select the channel you want to use from there. If you want to send a tell (private message) to someone you see chatting just click on their name in the chat window which will bring up a tell window for you to use, typing "/tell <name> <message>" (without the quotes and brackets) also works. If someone just sent you a tell pressing shift + the "R" key will put "/tell <their name> " into the chat edit window for you. You can also type "/r" before your message to get the same effect.

See pages 20-24 in the manual for more chat related help. There's also a link in the log-in window with more help and links to more help on different things including scripts.

.

B-09 Basic UI Usage
The default settings aren't anything special but you can make a number of changes to get things how you want. Life bars of targets, the compass, your life, nano and XP bars plus windows not docked in the right column can be moved around wherever you want and most windows can also be resized by stretching out their sides. The chat window starts out in borderless mode so you will need to change its visual mode to normal to move and/or resize it first (right click on it, select Visual > Mode > Normal/Borderless). There are various GUI options you can set in the options window (press F10, select the Preferences tab, expand the GUI list in the left and go through those). Pressing Ctrl+numbers 1-0 on the main part of your keyboard will open/close various common GUI windows. Press "I" for inventory, "P" for the planet map and "U" for the skills window. You can also turn on the mini toolbar in the options panel if you don't like keyboard shortcuts or use the buttons in the GUI wings (personally I don't like the wings so turn them off).

A number of windows default to the right side column when opened, when too many are open to fit on screen you can scroll through them with the scroll wheel on your mouse when the pointer is over those windows or click and hold on a part of one then drag them up or down. To take a window out of the right column right click on its name to get it on your pointer, move that out a ways from the right edge of your screen then left click in an open space. You could then move it around and stretch the sides out as you please then later when you reopen the window it will be where and how you left it. The shop and nano program windows defaults to the right column but I find that far too small so pull them out, expand them to fill most of the screen and set them to list mode. You can adjust the order and size of the columns in list mode as well by dragging certain points at the top of the lists as well as add and remove columns by right clicking the top of the lists. If you want to move a window back into the right column right click on its name again to get it on your pointer then move it to the right edge and left click. You can also reorder the arrangement of the right column windows by placing them above or below another when the name is on your pointer. When you move a window back into the right column any vertical sizing is maintained but the horizontal size of all those windows is fixed. With 16.3 you can now drag the greyish bar at the bottom of each window in the right column to resize them vertically without removing them from the right column.

In each window you will see an "i" icon, clicking on that will give you an options list that lets you change various settings for that window such as how it displays info, sorting methods, visual appearance and so forth. Different windows when not in the right column can be nested inside each other so long as they are not in borderless visual mode. To do this right click on its name which will put it on your pointer then click on the window you want to nest it in. Both will now appear in the same window when opened shown as different tabs, this can be handy for chat windows or when you have multiple backpacks in your inventory.

The "X" key is the default sit shortcut but I find I accidently hit it when trying to go backwards at times which in a fight is not good. To prevent this I exchange it with something that wouldn't cause a problem should I accidently hit it like the reload or brawl shortcuts ("V"/"B"). Press F10 then select the "Hot Keys" to get at the shortcuts editing options.

See pages 20-24 in the manual for more help on chat windows. Pages 19, 25, 36-39 and 41-44 have help on other GUI elements. The pages towards the back of the manual has info on shortcuts plus there is a keyboard layout PDF you can download.

.

B-10 Getting Info on Something
Holding down the shift key and left clicking on most anything will open up an info panel giving you details on that thing. This works for players, mobs, items in your inventory or wear window and even some GUI elements. While holding down the shift key and moving your pointer around a small eye icon will appear with your pointer when it is over something you can get info on. Basically you can get info on about anything that can be selected in some way. Another way to get the info panel for things you can select in the play field like players or mobs is to press the "T" key on your keyboard when they are selected.

.

B-11 What do I Need to Upgrade this Starter Weapon?
For help on upgrading the weapons on newbie island talk to Antonio or type: /tell recipebot show me 590
Also please note that most things can't be upgraded, usually once you outgrow them you replace them.

.

B-12 How do I add Someone to my Friends List?
Type "/cc addbuddy <the character's name>" without the quotes or brackets. If you've sent and/or received tells from that person you could find them in the list of people you recently sent messages to in the friends window (ctrl+7) then right click the name and select befriend from the menu. Then if they are on screen with you, you can use the %t variable (shortcut reference to the person/thing you currently have selected, must be a lower case t), select that person then type: /cc addbuddy %t

.

B-13 What do the Skill name Colours Mean?
The colour gives you an idea how expensive it will be to invest in that skill or ability. Green is the cheapest while dark blue is the most expensive. Over time even a small difference can really add up. Check detailed mode in the skills window from the "i" menu (top left corner of the window) to get better IP cost info for each skill. Below is the range by which increasing your skills/abilities will increase in IP cost (ex if a green one cost you 150 IP to increase one point to increase it another point it will cost 151 IP). The exact amount by which the total IP cost of a skill increases is fixed for each skill depending on the prof you selected. So if a skill goes up in cost each skill point by 1.3 IP when you have 10 skill points in it when you have 1000 skill points in it the cost will still increase by 1.3 IP per point (will cost you a heck of a lot more to increase at 1000 than it did at 10 of course though).
Green +1 / point
Pale Blue +1.1 - +1.5 / point
Blue +1.6 - +2.0 / point
Dark Blue +2.1 - +4.0 / point

.

B-14 How do I Combine Things?
Either select the source item then shift + right click on the other item or press shift + T to open the trade skills window, put the items in the correct slots and press the build button. Most craftings will require a certain amount of specific skills. The trade skills window will provide you with extra info if you're short on any skill plus you can view the result (the info is largely wrong but lets you check the end QL if you shift click the result which is nice when trying to build to a specific one). If you don't use the trade skills window then should the craft fail you'll get that extra info as a text notification in your chat window. So long as you have enough skill the craft will succeed but if you don't or there is no such craft you will not loose your crafting materials.

.

B-15 How do you add a Link to an Items Info in Chat?
Just click on the item in your inventory to put it on your pointer then click in the chat window to add a link for that item.

.

B-16 How do I Delete Items?
Right click on the item and hold that down till a menu appears then select delete. For items that can't be placed on the ground (most can't anymore) you could also click on them in your inventory then click on the ground around you, a pop-up will ask you if you want to delete the item or not.

.

B-17 How do I Check My Level and AC?
Open the stats window (ctrl+9).

.

B-18 What does QL Mean?
QL is short for Quality Level. Most every item has a QL and the higher the QL the better it is, but also the higher the requirements are for you to use it. Not all items start at QL 1 and not all go up to the same levels either.

.

B-19 What is a Whom-pah?
A whom-pah is a kind of transporter, you walk into it in one location and then walk out of it in another location. The destination location or city will be listed on a sign above the door. The ones off the island you just walk into, you don't need passes for them. There is a picture of what most Neutral and Clan whom-pahs look like on page 48 of the manual, Omni ones look somewhat different.

.

B-20 What is a Fr00b?
Someone that is playing AO for free. Some view it as an insulting name saying that it means "free noob" but really it's not. May have no relation but in the old text based adventure game Zork II coins and bills have "in Frobs we trust" on them.

.

B-21 How can I hit more often and be hit less often?
The attacker's Attack Rating in comparison to the defender's Defence Rating will determine the chances to hit. There are nanos and items that will improve or reduce either directly but generally speaking it is based on the related skill levels. Increasing the related attack or nano skills will increase your Attack Rating while increasing the related defence skill (Evade Close, Dodge Ranged, Duck Explosions & Nano Resist) for the attack in question increases your Defence Rating. Also if your Attack Rating is a good bit above the target's Defence Rating that will provide an improved chance to land a critical hit. To see what the related attack and defence skills would be look at the info for the weapon or nano. Nanos all use Nano Resist as the defence skill but not always at the same percentage of the target's Nano Resist level, some nanos also have a target level defence check as well.

B-22 A Warning About IP Use
For the first fifteen or so levels (varies depending on the prof) so long as you spent your IP wisely you will find you have an excess of IP at each level after assigning points to skills and abilities. Be warned though that this will quickly change and you will then find that you'll be forever short on IP till around level 100-150. Due to this you will need to be careful with what you put your IP into right from the start.

To help you decided which nano skills need to be increased the most check the prof nano lists at either of the database sites listed in C-02 and figure out which of your prof's nano lines would be of the most use. Then use either one to help you figure out which weapons you should focus on getting so you know which weapon skills need to be increased. It should be noted though that the pet profs (engineers, meta-physicists and bureaucrats) for the first half or so of their life should rely on their pets to do most of their damage while running nanos to help and hiding behind a wall or your team tank as they tend to be rather squishy profs. Then nano-technicians would be too busy attacking with nanos to use a weapon much so and weapons would be more for their bonuses than to do damage.

.

B-23 When and How can I Leave the Island?
You can leave any time you want but if you're brand new to the game it would be a good idea to stick around till you have gotten used to things. You will be kicked off when you hit level twenty though (you're bonkers if you try to stay that long though). People with the AI expansion would want to stay till they at least get their second AI level but could stay till level fifteen to fill the AI XP bar one more time (don't bother for the thid AI lvl on the island if you have LE). If you don't have AI most would leave anywhere from about level one to ten. The island is an easy place to get the first ten or so levels, some good early level gear, a batch of cheap nanos and a bit of starter money so sticking around for a while is a good idea, especially if you're brand new to the game.

To leave you will need a pass from your faction rep first, all of which are on the platform near Antonio. If you're Neutral talk to the Neutral observer about leaving the island to get your pass and starter maps. If you're Clan or Omni after you used the application form to join either side talk to your recruitment rep again to ask about leaving and he'll give you your pass and starter maps.

Once you have a pass go through the large doors near Travis to get into the whom-pah room where you will find three whom-pahs. Each whom-pah has a name over it, if you're Neutral use the Borealis one, West Athens/Athens if you're Clan and Rome if you're Omni. Click on the pass in your inventory then with it on your pointer click on the little terminal in front and a bit to the side of the correct whom-pah (your pointer will turn into a gear icon when it is over the terminal). You will then find yourself off the island and near two NPCs, one should talk to you right away or after moving forward just a bit and give you the option to start a series of small quests for starter gear/items, XP and credits.

.

B-24 Tips Before you Leave
Before you leave get your prof nano pack from the shop terminal near Antonio. Then if you're new to the game and especially if playing with a free account it really would be best to join either Clan or Omni before you leave or really as soon as possible. Neutral is the hardest of the three to play if you're a fr00b and new plus the advantages you get by going Clan or Omni while on the island are quite good.

Picking Clan or Omni while on the island allows you to get small badges from the Clan/Omni vendor (only available on the island) which you can combine with any of the newcomer armour parts you can buy from Antonio or gain by doing quests for Travis. Doing this will give you upgradable sided armour. The armour pieces offer high all around AC for a newbie and can be upgraded from QL 1-15. It doesn't matter what the QL of the original newcomer armour parts were as the end result will be the same so you can buy the cheapest ones to combine with the badges. You can upgrade the QL of the armour pieces no higher than that of your current character level or QL 15 (which ever is lower) and are upgraded by right clicking of them when in your inventory.

Also the quests Travis gives you to help the Clan medic or Omni unicorn commander will give you a shoulder pad for either side. Shoulder pads aren't that common and can't be purchased at standard shops plus those will be the best you can use for a stretch. So run the quest for your sides shoulder pads twice to get two, one for each shoulder.

If you plan on going Clan:
If you plan on going Clan one thing you could do is go to both the Omni and Clan recruiters to get applications for both. Next use the Omni application, upgrade the newcomer armour with Omni badges and sell things to the Omni vendor as he will give you more money than Antonio or the Clan vender would and the Omni sided newcomer armour is a bit better than the Clan version. Now if your character is a tradeskiller get at least one of the OT Tech-Libraries as it is not a sided item and gives +15 to a handful of tradeskills. You could also get another one to sell off the island as this is the only place you can get it and it is rather handy. Also get the smelling salts (another item only on the island) for a small map nav and sense bonus (nice item for an early level shade too since they can't wear merit boards).

The Omni sided newcomer armour is a bit better than the Clan version so you could stay Omni till at least level 15 and even leave as Omni to make getting those last five levels much easier and to get a few things. If you leave the island as Omni get the Omni backpack (provides AC and skill bonuses but can't store anything) and helmet (the Hood of Bobic for Clanners and Neutrals has the same stats) you get in the first few quests plus at least one full Omni med-suit (6 parts, 2 being sleaves) from Omni tailors or clothing terminals in general shops of Omni cities which gives a +78 treatment and first aid bonus (are not sided items). Then go to a neutral city to use the Clan application and use a cell scanner to make sure you don't find yourself in Omni territory after you die. Also only take the Omni items off once you find something better as you won't be able to put them on again as a Clanner.

One thing to take note of is that you can't use a starter map set if you have any other maps installed and you can't uninstall maps so if you went Omni, used the Omni map set then switched to Clan you'd need to install each of the Clan maps the starter set would have on your own and have enough map nav skill to install them. It looks like at some point the maps in the starter set for Clan and Omni were changed a bit so if you're going Clan it would be best to wait till you go Clan before installing any maps so you can use the Clan starter map set. If you have SL then once you hit level 100 you could reset some perks to max Cartographer and shove in some high QL map nav implants. With those and trickle down from your abilities you should be able to install most of the maps and all of the map upgrades.

.

B-25 Clan, Omni or Neutral?
First off one explanation to new players. Merit/token boards are upgradable to higher levels once you collect enough tokens and are at the required title level by doing a mission properly and killing enough enemy targets in the mission area before doing the assigned task (right click to upgrade once you have enough). As your merit board is upgraded it will offer more and better bonuses to things like your max health, max nano, defence, offence, XP and other things. At the highest level (which takes 1000 tokens at this time, you can get others which require up to 2500) the bonuses are quite sizable. Both the Clan and Omni boards are equal to each other at each level.

Once you switch from Neutral to Clan or Omni you can never go back to being Neutral again. Then while Neutral players can only use Neutral shop terminals (except for sided map and bookshop terminals) Clan and Omni players can use terminals for their faction as well as Neutral ones. Neutral and Clan shops charge a bit more than Omni ones and give you less on sales but the Miir shop in Newland is an Omni store anyone can use so you can get as much on sales to shop terminals as Omni players by selling your stuff there. Although after you get one character to a high level shop prices really won't matter much as aside from trade skill items and some QL 125 or lower stuff the better stuff will be found off of boss type mobs, as random drops, built from dropped items or sold by players, not in regular shops. Neutral players with AI though can search and buy from any AI city player shops, Clan and Omni ones can only search and buy from those of their own side and Neutral. The XP side bonuses each get tends to shift around over time but Neutral almost always tends to have the lowest.

Especially for a fr00b neutral is the hardest of the three to play as you don't get a merit board and you miss out on some of the stronger side specific gear Clan and Omni players can use. On the plus side neutral players can go almost anywhere in the game without being attacked, they can listen to and talk in the Neutral, Clan and Omni chat channels. They can also use any not Clan/Omni items such as the shoulder pads awarded in the sided shoulder pads quests off the island so neutral players are the only ones able to wear two level three pads awarded in that quest line (one of each side). The one dangerous place for a neutral player is Tir as the Clan commanders there will attack all but fellow Clanners. The area around the whom-pahs and the grid terminal should be safe though as guards won't attack Neutral players unless a commander initiates the attack. If you have the expansions most the better expansion gear after SL has no side requirements, it can just take more effort to get.

Omni specific items in the original AO tend to be a bit better than the equivalent Clan items but with the new gear from the three expansions that doesn't really matter anymore. On the down side I can't stand being Unreedemed in SL, ugly snarly evil little demons that they are. Then Omni players spent so much time in Borealis rather than Omni cities that Omni chat could be more active in Neutral cities than Omni ones at times. This may have been what inspired Funcom to have Omni guards occupy Borealis for a time in a plot development action a while back which made Omni city chat even quieter during that time.

Since Clanners tend to actually spend time in Clan cities I've found getting buffs or services easier as a Clanner. In the original AO most Omni specific gear does tend to be a bit better or just different but after the original at least most were just different (ie the Redeemed armour would have X Fire AC and Y Cold AC while the Unredeemed would be the other way around) or had no side requirement.

C-01 Helpful in-Game Bots
There are various handy chat bots people have set up to help with different things like crafting, item info and other things. Add them to your friends list so you can get at them later easily.

Recipebot
Recipebot has on record most of the recipes available in the game. Just type: "/tell recipebot search <type some or all of the name of an item>" or "/tell recipebot " then drop the item in the chat edit area to add a link (in both cases don't include the quotes or brackets). If you have a number you want to check it would be best to open a tell window to save you a bit of time. This is good for getting answers to the "what is this for" questions but not always.

Helpbot
Helpbot is a handy resource you can use to get info on the title break down and IP awarded per level (info is wrong at TL 1 though), mission levels available at a given level, let you run a whois on someone, have a random number generated or other things. For a list of commands type "/tell helpbot help". The new "is" command will let you check if someone is online at the time or not.

Itemsbot
With itemsnet dead helpbot's items function proved very popular so it was made into a seperate bot. It's used like itemsnet was but will give you more complete lists of items than itemsnet did. To use it type: "/tell itemsbot <type full or partial name of item, no brackets>" or to see something at a specific QL "/tell itemsbot <QL> <type full or partial name of item, no brackets>"

C-02 Helpful Web Sites
Official AO Forums
Sections offering general and profession specific game play help, guides, link lists and various other things. There is a wealth of info in the rooted posts. While anyone can view these only paying players can post in these forums.

AO Patches
This is a link to the FTP location you can download the AO patches from Funcom, meaning these are the official patches straight from the source. The thing is that sometimes it takes them a while to list a new patch on the updates page but even if it's not listed there it can often be found here on their FTP site already. For the bigger ones for the first while after release getting them from their FTP site can take a lot less time than through their patch updater at times.

Anarchy Mainfraim
Item database and planing aids.

Auno.org
Helpful planing aids and another item database.

AO Universe
Lots of info on dungeons, quests, tradeskilling plus other things for all expansions and has been udated frequently.

Anarchy Arcanum
Info on items you can craft and how plus quest notes and other helpful things. Although updates stopped before AI was released so it has only partial SL info and no AI or LE info. Eventually the site went dead and someone put a copy of it on the AODevs site.

AO Vault
Quest help and other such matters.

AOFroobs.com
A general info site with a forums directed towards those playing AO for free.

Faunlore
MoB and dungeon info for both Rubi-Ka and SL.

CSPmap
The newer/updated huge map project.

Travel.to Rubi-Ka ( address 1 & address 2)
The original/old huge map. It would be better to use the CSP map though.

SL Sphere Map
The Sphere map is like the SL version of the huge map. Lacks some old info and info on all newer things.

Aquarius SL maps
Aquarius is an org in AO but one rather nice thing they've done is produce their own SL maps and put them on their web site so anyone can see them. These offer a lot of detail, including maps for the different dungeons and are more up to date than the Sphere map.

halorn.com
Various helpful little programs including Click Saver.

Anarchy Online ClickSaver Rollability Facts
A great resource when it comes to checking if something is rollable or not and can give you an idea as to how likely it is to roll that item.

Grid Stream Productions (GSP)
A live DJ streaming audio station by various AO fans that plays a range of different genres of music dependant largely on the DJ, the event they're playing for and in game player song requests if they're taking requests. Some of the staff also have made up some fun variations of songs and give them an AO twist. They can often team up with ARKs and GMs during various in game events. FC even added a GSP t-shirt you can get from a NPC in Street West Bank just outside of Reet Retreat (William Robter - 1195 x 2810 x 19 - he's above ground level) at the cost of one rollerrat tail. Easiest way to find him would be to use one of the Reet Retreat bar whom-pahs found in some AI player cities as that deposits you right beside him.

AO Devs
Offers various chat/org bots written by others, related help and such.

See page 104 in the manual and the links list on the AO site for some others. There is also an AO Bookmarks thread in the forums.

C-03 Better Planet Maps
The basic Rubi-Ka planet map being used by default isn't that useful really but a much better one is included with your install of AO called the Dovve Map. To switch to this map hit the "P" key on your keyboard to open the planet map window, click on the "i" in the upper left of the window, choose the "select map" option from the menu then select the Dovve Map from the window that follows. This map provides more detailed info showing cities, Whom-pahs, zones, landmarks and other such things then the info given is different when zoomed in or out. You can also get even more detailed planet maps such as the Huge Map and CSPmap on Rubi-Ka and the Sphere one for SL provided as downloads from sites listed in the previous topic. Once installed switch to them in the same manner listed for the Dovve map.

C-04 Where can I Store Things and how can I Hold More in my Inventory?
All general stores have a bank in them which will let you store a lot of stuff and provide character specific storage. Then all advanced, advanced/superior and superior general stores have a containers terminal you can buy backpacks from. You only need points in adventuring if you want to wear backpacks, not to store things in them. Right click on them to open them and all back packs can store the same amount of stuff so unless you want the wear bonuses any backpack will do. Please note that you can not access items in your backpacks from your action bar but you can put a pack in the action bar to open it easily then select the items to use from there.

A backpack with stuff in it can then be put in your bank allowing you to store a very large number of items. You can also rename backpacks to make identifying their contents easier. To rename one open the backpack, click on the "i" icon in the window and select "rename" from that menu. There are some good backpacks for adventures to wear but for the most part other profs would wear other back items. To trade a lot of stuff at a time more easily just put them in a backpack and give it to the other person in a trade window. You can not trade a backpack containing nodrop or unique items though. Unique ones can be traded, just not while in a backpack or if the other person has one of those unique items already. Also since things no longer have mass/weight only get the medium or large backpacks if you want a pack that is clearly different without checking the name. For the rest stick with small packs as they all have the same number of storage slots.

.

C-05 Trading and Dropping Items
To open a trade window with someone just right click on them. So long as it's not a nodrop item, a unique item the other player already has or a backpack containing a nodrop or unique item anything can be traded. Once one side hits the accept button the items and credits to be traded by either side can't be changed any more. Once both people have hit accept you will get a small pop-up window asking you to accept or decline again so you can take another look while everything is locked just in case someone tried to pull a fast one on you.

If you drop an item on the ground only you can pick it up but outside of your apartment they will disappear in time. Then your apartment can only hold so many items, thirty I think, after that new items will disappear after a while. You should receive a warning notice when you dropped more than your limit though. After a patch a ways back now only some items can be put on the ground, it used to be anything not nodrop could be.

.

C-06 Why Can't I add any More to this Skill?
You can only add three to five points to a skill per level then levels are split into blocks called title levels and you can only put so many points into a skill per title level. Also if the abilities relating to a given skill are too low you will not be able to increase that skill till you raise the ability/abilities that are too low. The six base abilities though can always be increased at each level until you hit the ability cap for your breed. Then you need the Shadowlands expansion to go past level 200 and hit title level seven. While you may feel that you have more than enough IP to play with for the first while after the first fifteen to twenty or so levels you will find yourself forever short on IP for a good stretch after that. Not until you get somewhere between levels 100-150 will you have enough IP to spend points on anything but the essentials so plan carefully.
title 1: 1-14 (initial IP: 1 500 IP; gained at levels 2-14: 4 000 IP)
title 2: 15-49 (10 000 IP)
title 3: 50-99 (20 000 IP)
title 4: 100-149 (40 000 IP)
title 5: 150-189 (80 000 IP)
title 6: 190-204 (150 000 IP)
title 7: 205-220 (400 000 IP)

.

C-07 How Long does the Global Market Search Take?
You require the AI expansion to use the global market search. What it does is searches the player shops in player owned AI cities. Neutral players can search and buy from AI city shops of all three sides but Clan and Omni players can only search and buy from their side and Neutral.

.

C-08 What are Reclaim Terminals for?
In the past some of the items in your inventory would not always come along with you when you died so you had to wait till your corpse was available in reclaim then get the lost items from a reclaim terminal.

.

C-09 How do I Return this Mission Item?
You need to take the item back to the exact same mission terminal you got the mission from so try to make a habit of using the same one when pulling missions from a certain city. To return it left click on the item in your inventory then with it on your pointer click on that mission terminal. Some missions just tell you to find the item, in those cases just left click on the item and your mission is over.

.

C-10 What is the Grid?
This is another means of transportation in AO but unlike whom-pahs requires you to have a certain amount of computer literacy skill to access the various points. There is also a special grid fixers and those in a fixer's team can access which has exit points all over Rubi-Ka.

See page 49-50 of the manual for more info and a picture of what a grid terminal looks like.

Grid Comp Lit Min Requirements
76 Omni Trade
81 Athens
81 Tir (both inside and outside ones)
91 Borealis
91 Newland
101 Second Level Elevators

76 Omni Entertainment
81 2HO
91 Meetmedere
91 Rome (Red)
101 Galway
121 Harrys
121 Lush Hills
131 West Athens
151 Clondyke
181 4 Holes
251 Broken Shores
201 Third Floor Elevators

151 Omni HQ
451 Camelot
461 Sentinels (Mort)

.

C-11 Using Maps
PF Maps or play field maps provide a basic topographical view of your current zone. These alone aren't any better than a good planet map when outside. Although with map upgrades they can also show machines, mobs, people and faction sides which can be very helpful when trying to find or avoid things. Map upgrades and Rubi-Ka PF Maps for different zones and cities can be purchased from any maps terminal in general stores and all will require you to have a minimum amount of map navigation skill to install them (except the side starter sets). Once installed you're set but since map nav is the only skill you can't reset try to make as much use of implants, perks (if you have the expansions) and other things as possible to get enough map nav skill. Also note that PF maps can't be uninstalled.

In the Shadowlands you don't buy and install maps, you run map nano programs. Although only the first two areas and Jobe (is grouped with the one for the first area) are available to everyone. After that only adventures get map nanos to see the outside PF maps (can be run on other but many skip the higher ones). All these maps nanos take a certain amount of adventuring skill to run in addition to one nano skill. A new vet item (7 VP, req 2+ years as paying player) added in the 17.3 or 17.4 patch gave us a new general use SL map nano that covers all areas past the second area and unlike the other two general ones can be run on others.

.

C-12 How do I get Items from my Overflow Window After I Closed it?
To reopen the overflow window you will need to overflow your inventory again before you change zones as once you change zones the items in your overflow will be gone forever. The easiest way to do this when in the field is to combine something when every slot in your inventory is full like by using the bio device on some monster parts to make blood plasma or use your screwdriver on some robot junk to get a nano sensor. If there is another player, NPC or non-hostile mob around right click on them to open the trade window, put one item in there then fill all your inventory slots with things from your packs, close the trade window and you'll overflow again.

.

C-13 How do I get Vehicles and Can I use them as a Fr00b?
Since the Notum Wars booster pack was added to the fr00b program in late 2006 fr00bs can now use almost all the available vehicles in AO (AI added a few more yalm types, more will be coming through buyable booster packs). There are two types of shop buildings on Rubi-Ka, general ones which you should be quite familiar with and luxury ones which are one room shops that may have just a few terminals, vehicles are sold at one or two of these terminals. You can also get others and upgrades for different ones from Tower shops or through tradeskill processes which have kits sold in the Tower shops. Each side has a tower shop, the Neutral one is in Borealis near the Jobe whom-pah, the Clan one is in Old Athens west of the whom-pahs and I don't know where the Omni one is off hand (all my chars are Clan or Neutral).

The only regular ones really worth getting though are the yalms which use vehicle air skill to equip (lowest is VA 81 for a QL 30 yalm, run speed: +150) but have a base cost of about 5 million credits (lowers with increased comp lit skill). There are lower cost land based ones and water based ones (no one really buys water ones) but if you can't manage a yalm yet and aren't a fixer, MP or adventurer for long trips you would be better off using mission terminals to roll for Boosted-Graft: Sparrow Flight, Boosted-Graft: Sparrow Flight (Team) or Boosted-Graft: Playful Cub then hacking them with a hacking device (takes little skill to do). Those are easy enough to use, at lower levels I found popped up often and give up to a 190 run speed bonus. Please note that vehicles can't be used indoors or in the Shadowlands also adventures and meta-physicists have nanos that allow fight.

Even though a land vehicle of equal land vehicle skill requirement as an air vehicle has vehicle air requirement would have a higher run speed bonus, the air vehicle will still be better. With land vehicles you need to go around obstacles, water and over changes in land elevation plus deal with agro mobs and the like on the ground. With air vehicles you just go up a good ways, level off and avoid all that.

Notum Wars added some additional vehicles, some are just yalm paint jobs or alternate types of yalms but there is also an attack land vehicle which would be good for profs using ranged weapons. All the Notum Wars vehicles are quite expensive though.

.

C-14 Where can I get an Apartment and What are they for?
In any major city look for doors which will generally have a number on their right and a sign above them (Neutral/Clan/Omni - Arrival/Appartment Complex/Highrise). These lead to the old backyards you used to start out in on Rubi-Ka (exit to the old training areas of each in the back), along one side are some doors that lead to appartments. Just enter any of those doors and you will then find yourself inside with an appartment key in your inventory. To re-enter your appartment you will need to enter the same backyard in the same city and go in the same door in that backyard with the key in your inventory (not in a backpack or the bank) so write that info down someplace. If you want to have others over just team with them and they will be able to come in with you.

The ones on Rubi-Ka for each faction are all about the same and aren't much to look at really, the Jobe ones are much nicer then the luxury Jobe apartments blow them all away (need to have pre-ordered SL or got a luxury Jobe apartment pass another way). It is possible to have up to three apartments, one on Rubi-Ka, the regular Jobe one and a luxury Jobe one. Then you can have at the most thirty (I think) items dropped in each of your apartments, after that items will disapear in time but you should get a warning when you exceed the max. Furniture and other things can be found in missions, purchased in furniture terminals found in luxury stores, this one NPC in Jobe harbour has a lot then there's Uncle Bazzit's shop (need AI) which has a lot too.

Really though apartments are just for fun things more for the role players to have fun in. If all you want to do is run around killing things apartments will just be a drain on your wallet if you want to deck your apartment out as some of those items can cost quite a bit considering they don't do anything but look nice.

.

C-15 How do I Install Implants, get Clusters, etc...?
Basics and Installing:
Implants are bonus items you stick into your character's body which can give bonuses to various skills and/or abilities. Personally I don't put in implants until I hit level twenty something and then shove in QL 70/90 ones. Especially those first twenty or so levels go by so quickly I just don't see the point of spending the time or money on implants before then. To install an implant you need to use a surgery clinic which can be found in any general store on the mainland or implant shop in Jobe, using a portable surgery clinic which you can buy from medical supply terminals also works. You will also require a certain amount of treatment skill and enough in one of the six abilities to install them as well. Using the surgery clinic in a shop costs 300 credits, refills your health and nano by 1000 points each and gives you a five minute (or until you zone) buff that allows you to install and/or change around your implants plus gives a 100 point treatment bonus.

If you have SL there are also symbiants which are like prof group specific implants that give a wider range of bonuses than implants can but as they have level requirements and are much harder to get for most slots you'll usually want to use implants instead for a stretch. Especially for at least the first 200 QL implants can be better for twinking on things though while symbiants tend to be better for general use. There are also some cases where you may want to use custom implants rather than symbiants the whole way through (left hand for martial artists, MPs using 1HB weapons, etc...). Shades can't use implants or symbiants, instead they have their own symbiant like items called spirits. On the plus side though those can be found as regular drops from some types of mobs in SL (mainly spirit mobs) so you can farm them with another char. There is also an item shades can use on a nearly dead SL mob which will give any mob a chance to drop a spirit.

Pre-Made Implants:
You can buy pre-made implants with specific clusters installed at QLs 10, 20, 30, 50, 75 & 100 in the profession implants section of basic general stores. You may find though that mixing and matching the implants from different profession implant terminals will work out better than getting them all from the one for your prof. You can also get completed ones of different QLs with random clusters as drops or mission rewards, pulled from half digested body parts in SL or in the implant terminals found in the main and trade sections of general stores.

Making Your Own:
You can also build implants, first find, buy or roll an empty implant or get an implant with clusters in it cleaned (can't clean QL 201+ implants or those with Jobe clusters in them). Empty implants at set QLs can be purchased in the implant terminal in main area of general stores and at random QLs in the implant terminal found in the trade section of general stores. Clusters can also be purchased in three different terminals in the trade section of general stores. Each implant has three different slot types (type/bonus ratio; faded/2, bright/3, shining/5) then only certain clusters can go into a given implant and slot so there are restrictions on what you can build. QL 1-125 implants and QL 1-200 clusters are sold from shop terminals and Jobe ones from a NPC in Plaza/Market (one of those), after that you will need to roll the ones you want or get them as random drops.

If you want them built get the right clusters for your implants and the clusters need to be a minimum percentage of the QL of the implant or higher for them to go in (Faded/Bright/Shining - 82%/84%/86%). So if you had a QL 100 implant you need at least QL 82 faded, QL 84 bright and QL 86 shining clusters. Please note though that for QL 50+ implants if the person installing the clusters has a good bit more than enough of the required trade skill the implant can go up in QL with each cluster. So don't scrape the bottom of the QL limit too much for more than one of them and warn the installer if one or more only just fits. Once installed the bonuses given by each cluster will relate to the QL of the final implant so a QL 82 faded cluster will give the bonus of a QL 100 one if installed in a QL 100 implant. Also that a QL 200 cluster will give a QL 100 bonus if put in a QL 100 implant.

There are also two variations for all those parts, basic and refined. Basic ones are in the QL 1-200 range while refined are QL 201 and higher. Refined clusters will only go in refined implants while basic clusters will only go in basic implants. While implants above QL 50 can go up in QL as clusters are installed basic implants will never be boosted to refined in this manner. Two added things to note about refined implants is that you can't remove the clusters from them and that they have title level requirements. Jobe clusters will only go in QL 100+ implants and implants with Jobe clusters in them will also have title level requirements (TL 3 for QL 100 implants, TL 4+ for QL 101+ implants) and Jobe clusters increase the requirements of the implant.

The clusters you get from terminals on Rubi-Ka will require nano programing skill to install but those from Jobe and the heal/nano delta ones can use other trade skills. Also the build requirements given by Nano Nanny can be rather off at times so make sure you try to combine them yourself before hunting for someone to build it so you can note the min required skills accurately.

C-16 What's Twinking?
Most gear in AO has no level requirement but instead are completely based on the how high certain abilities and/or skills are. Twinking is when you squeeze on stat based items, get pets, use nanos or other such things with the help of bonus gear and buffing nanos. There are many items that add bonuses to certain skills and abilities and some are really just buffing items used only to increase those skills and abilities. There are also buffing nanos for about every type of skill and ability plus you can often get buffs from more than one nano at a time for specific skills and abilities.

.

C-17 Why does this Weapon/Armour say it's Over Equipped and why won't my pet listen to me?
For weapons and armour once the nanos expire, you put your regular gear and implants on you may find the thing you just equipped is marked as over equipped (OE) and is only used at a certain percentage of its base potential. This is because you no longer meet the requirements of that item and the further off you are from the requirements the more heavily penalized you will be. You can still use it and get benefits from it, you just don't get the full effect of it so long as it's marked OE.

Pets although will not listen to your instructions if you are in OE of the nano requirements to run their nanos. Due to this getting hit with nano debuffs during a fight as a pet prof can be a bit of a problem.

You don't have to worry about OE with things other than weapons, armour and pets though, once those other things are in/on you're fine. Also this only affects the AC of armour, damage of weapons plus any max health/nano bonuses, any other bonuses they may have (ex. +skill or +damage) are not affected by OE. OE comes in blocks of 25%. You will hit 75% OE when you have less than 80% of the required skill/abilites and 50% OE when you have less than 60%. Anything below that and the item likely isn't going to be too useful to you.

C-18 Where do I get a Merit Board?
If you're off the island look for a starter gear shop terminal next to some groups of mission terminals in most to all cities of your faction and in any backyard training area. If you're still on the island you'll get your board when you use the side change application. Neutral players don't have a side merit board or get tokens in missions but there are some merit board like neck items you can get as drops from a few specific mobs in place of them. Neck like head and back items often tend to be unusable by shades, merit boards are one of those items.

.

C-19 Can I Still Change Sides?
Yes but once you switch from Neutral to Clan or Omni you can never go back to being Neutral. If you have SL once you are at least level 201 you can never switch sides again and having too much faction may prevent or just make it unwise to switch as well. If you can still switch go to a book terminal in a general store to buy an application form for either Clan or Omni. There are different ones for different level ranges so check the description to make sure you can use it. Once you change your sides you will be locked from changing sides again for a number of in game hours, how many depends the level you were when you used the application. When you switch sides you will have no tokens for your new side so you'll need to start over with a new merit board and at zero tokens again.

Always make sure you change sides in a Neutral city and that you use a cell scanner/insurance terminal in a Neutral city when you switch as well. This is to keep from getting attacked by the guards of your former alignment if you were to switch in a city of your former alignment. Also so that the next time you die you don't find yourself being reformed in a city of your former alignment and stuck in an endless circle of death where you are killed by the guards there, reformed then killed again although there is a death loop protection that will move you somewhere else if you die quickly multiple times in a row though.

C-20 Where to go at Level X and Notes on Team Fighting
None of this is set in stone, you're free to do whatever you want but there are some good places to go. With SL levelling generally involves teaming up and going after brink mobs but this is more aimed at the fr00bs on the planet. Although teaming is always your best way to get lots of XP fast.

Those Early Levels:
Due to one of the changes in patch 16.3 regarding mission XP rewards (given XP was capped at 5% of the total XP required to level, now it's 20%) at very early levels (1-10 or so) the mission string the guide in the backyard of any major city gives you can make for some easy XP. Each run should only take about two to three minutes and can give up to 2050 XP plus your side bonus. Getting a good run speed buff and using a ranged weapon will speed things up some.

Another one that takes advantage of the increased XP cap on missions with fixed XP pay outs is the Clan Tirbo Ratcatcher mission that has you bringing him some rollerrat tails (he is in West Athens North a ways from where you popped up from the island). Each tail will give you up to 500 XP, 500 credits and a random armour piece at a QL equal to your level but really this is only effective if you have a number of tails saved up from some of your other chars. If you go out and try collecting the tails now other things will be much more useful to you. This mission is available for your first fifteen levels.

After that if you're Clan you could see the NPC in Old Athens beside the whom-pah to Tir who asks you to deliver a report to another NPC in Tir standing by the whom-pah to Old Athens making it a very fast quest to do (should only take about 30 seconds). You also get a two slot belt for doing this but if you're in it for the XP delete the belt, it's not worth much. In an early 17.x patch the effectiveness of such missions was reduced from 5.18% of the total XP required to level and 48 times your level in credits to 3% the XP and 40 times your level in creds. Due to that teaming and going after higher level mobs would be more effective XP wise but if you're new and low on credits the amount you'll make while doing this would be helpful, it's just very boring. This could take you to level thirty-one if you wanted.

Random Mobs:
There's a lot of places to find mobs if you're willing to look or if you paid attention while on route to one location or another for missions or other things. If you find a number of them in the same general area within a good level range for you or your group that can make for some decent XP. Some mob types will be better than others though.

Dyna Camps:
You'll find these all over the place, there will be a pack of mobs of the same type with one big glowing (usually at least) one amoung them. The CSP map marks various places on the map with numbers, each indicates the average level of the dyna boss at that location. The dyna boss will spawn every 20 min or so and the minions rather rapidily so finding a group you can manage can give you a fairly steady flow of mobs to fight. Dyna bosses have boosted life levels, are much stronger than regular mobs of its level, have random bonuses (shields, damage types, etc...) but give lots of XP and can give you some of the better stuff (weapons, armour, rings, components etc...). If you find a good group and can manage the boss but not with all it's minions (who will be a lower level than the dyna boss) you'll generally find they will keep chasing you after the minions give up (provided you have enough run speed). So run till the others give up and are left behind a ways, kill the boss then go after the rest. Although there are also some mobs that unless you zone never give up no matter how far behind you leave them. It's rather annoying to find yourself under attack by something you last saw on the other side of the zone ten to twenty minutes ago.

Missions:
These are good as it allows you to specify about what level the mobs will be, then with team missions you get a dyna boss like mob and a much larger mission area with a lot more enemies to fight. So take the hardest missions you can handle or solo the hardest team missions you can but if you just want XP pick out the ones you can get to quickly.

Dungeons:
There are a number of these, teaming up and going as deep into them you can handle (or where ever the XP sweet spot is, if it has one) can yield you some nice XP plus there will generally be one or more rather nice items you can get from different mobs or bosses in them. Below I've listed the Rubi-Ka dungeon names (some aren't dungeons actually), where they are and the levels at which you can get in or suggested levels for each to go solo but would be lower if you team up (I don't have all the info on all of them). On a side note open and active dungeons tend to have a lot of trains (one or more people running with a large number of mobs following) which can bugger things up if you're trying to get XP. Personally I tend to just go to actual dungeons for the items only found inside it.

-Subway (Borealis - 635 x 470, West Athens - 390 x 390, Rome (Galway Shire) - 170 x 875)
-Entrance levels: 5-24
-Sub bosses have a percentage chance to spawn after being killed every ten minutes or so. Due to that it could respawn in about ten minutes or not for about two hours so don't camp the bosses unless you really have to.

-Temple of Three Winds (Greater Tir Country - 1815 x 2710)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: 30-60
-Really only good for its drops, get in, get them, get out and never go back. Don't bother with those nice but obscenely rare items though, they're not really worth the countless hours they could take to get.

-Biomare/Foreman's Office (The Longest Road - 1940 x 770)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: 55-100
-At around level 30-45 and in a team you can hit XP cap on kills (10% of the total XP required to level) from the floaters and bloaters in the sewers. There is also an exit button there (and many other places in this dungeon) that will send you to the dungeon entrance if you get in trouble. Those two mobs are your best bet for XP as there's a lot of them and they're not too dangerous. Although a lot of people (mostly Omni since their NPC is just outside the sewers entrance) can train down there a lot which will foul things up. You can although get wearable passes that let you wander around most areas without being attacked. There are also a few rather nice items you can get here and quests you can do.

-Steps of Madness (Omni Forest - 800 x 2800)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: 30+
-Right click on the eye to get in. Only reason to go here is a cloak from the final boss that gives +8 to all nano skills or Essence of Pure Jealousy to make a taunting item. Some of the mobs have way more health than they should.

-Cyborgs Barracks (Greater Tir County - 3232 x 2340)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: 50-70
-Largely ignored and really only used for the quests that send you in there (mainly the Uncle Bazzit one for the AI tech 3 item).

-Hackers (20K / Pleasant Meadows - ? x ?)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: ?-?
-Not a dungeon. Bot hackers are human mobs wandering around some areas, in this case there should be a fair group of them in one spot.

-Cyborg Domain - Avalon (1290 x 3870)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: ?-?
-Not a dungeon, there's a modest number of borgs around lvl 80-110 or so wandering around outside.

-Crypt of Home (CoH) (BrokenShore - 355 x 2215)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: 60-110
-Largely another items only dungeon, especially since you can be warped in when above lvl 110.

-The Smugglers Den (Southern Foul Plains - 1740 x 880)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: 75-150+

-Cyborgs Strongholds (west of Mort grid access - 1400 x 560)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: 75-110
-Not a dungeon, kill borgs wandering around the area.

-Inner Sanctum
-Entrance/Suggested levels: 125+
-The big brother to ToTW. Need the IS passes by turning in the exarch cloaks from ToTW to get in and you can get your perminate pass by collecting two items dropped inside. You can find entrances in Bor near the subs, WA in the small city area north of the bridge to OA and Galway Shire near a Bronto Burger I think.
-Camelot Castle (Avalon)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: 150+
-Really only used for Tarasque raids.

-Abandoned Omni-Tek Mining Outpost (Perpetual Wastelands - 3880 x 2745)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: 150+
-Not a dungeon, kill borgs wandering around the area.

-Abandoned Facilities (Biodomes) (Belial Forest & Southern Artery Valley)
-Entrance/Suggested levels: 200+
-Mainly for items to make some AI nanos and such.

.
Teaming:
The XP you get from mobs is boosted when in a team before it's split between members so while you would get more if you soloed the same mob it's not that much more. This means the kill speed increase you get from being in a team more than makes up for any per mob XP loss plus a team can manage mobs you couldn't kill on your own making for even more XP. So if you want lots of XP fast get in a good team, find a place with plenty of mobs the team can manage and get to killing.

A good team will have a mix of damage dealers, at least one good tank and one or more good healers, profs with calms, roots and snares are also helpful for crowd control. It's important that the team stays together and they should focus all attacks on one mob at a time with the tanks holding the agro of mobs. I've been in some really good teams but also some completely unorganized ones where everyone is running all over with some even fighting mobs other teams are already fighting and more than capable of killing on their own. If you get in a bad team either try to organize them fast or get out as you can be sure one of those idiots will draw agro from one or more things they can't handle then drag them over to you and others which could get you killed off. While bad teams can happen when teaming anywhere it is more likely on the planet with people below level 100 and in dungeons.

-Keep your PF map window open (ctrl+6) and watch where those blue and white dots are going, those are people in your team.
-Keep your team window (ctrl+5) open and keep an eye on the life bars of others, especially your healers and tanks.
-There should be one person that initiates attacks (the caller) in the team, the others should then use an assist macro ("/macro assist /assist nameOfCaller" put the macro icon in your short-cut bar which when used will make that person's fighting target your target then start attacking it as well. This method will knock a group of mobs down much faster than if everyone is attacking a different one.
-If you find you at times pull agro from the tank then while this may not always be that big of a deal in tougher fights and with squishier profs this can get you killed in a hurry. You could try to let the tank build agro before you start attacking, using weaker attacks for the first while or holding off on specials for a time while your tank builds agro would also help. Plus if you have them use nanos or items that reduce the agro of the mob on you should their attention turn to you. The tanks should also be using taunts to make sure the mobs keep beating on them. Tanks can and should be doing some good damage but it's more about being the one being attacked by mobs than doing damage so if you keep losing agro you're not doing your job.
-Everyone should know where you're going and what you're doing. Wandering around aimlessly, not telling new members what you're doing or changing plans without discussion doesn't do much good.

C-21 How do I Jump Higher/Further?
Strength affects jump hight while run speed affects your jump distance.

.

C-22 How do I Open Locked Doors/Chests?
You will need a lock pick which you can get from a tools or devices (one of those, they're cheap too) terminal in any general store or starter gear shop found near some mission terminals and in any backyard training area. If level twenty-four or under you can also get one by giving the begger near where you appeared after leaving newbie island a vagabond cloak (from Violent Vagabonds in the subway dungeon). You will also need some break and entry skill, about twice the level of the RK mission area for chests and related but much less for doors. There's a B&E expertise nano for an extra 20 B&E in the general nano terminal of the nano section in general stores then fixers and engineers have B&E nanos as well.

.

C-23 What do I do with Instruction Disks?
The instruction disks you find can be turned into a nano crystal but doing so takes a fair bit (at least 3-4.7 times the QL of the disk) in a number of different trade skills (computer literacy, nano programing, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and field quantum physics), several items and tools (buy them in the trade section of general stores) plus one type of item you need to go out and find lying around in typically hostile areas. Generally speaking if you can buy the completed nano in a shop (as most under QL 125 are) that will be much easier than getting the disk made into a nano. Although if you have a trade skiller with enough skill for the disk making the more expensive shop buyable ones can save you some money. The ones you really want to have made into nano crystals are the QL 125 or so and lower ones that are not shop buyable and any disk above QL 125.

.

C-24 Why did that person reach enlightenment or receive the highest honorary rank?
The enlightenment one indicates they reached level 220 (level cap for those with SL) while the highest honorary rank one indicates that person obtained AI level 30 (highest AI level). Both will of course require you to have those expansions.

.

.

C-26 What is the difference between small/medium/large backpacks?
In the past items had mass/weight so you needed larger packs to carry heavier stuff. Now that items no longer have mass/weight and as all packs have twenty-one storage slots they can all store just as much stuff. So for general use just stick with small backpacks.

.

C-27 Who Buffs Computer Literacy?
Only traders have comp lit buffs (also usable by agents in trader FP) but those are self only. If you are not a trader or agent other than the general +20 buff all you can use are imps/symbs, items, perks (SL/AI) and research (LE) for comp lit. You could also get a bit from things that boost intelligence.

.

C-28 Someone buffed me with something I don't want, what can I do?
With friendly buffs you can remove them by just right clicking them in your NCU window (ctrl+0 to open that). At least some hostile nanos such as roots, snares, DoTs, drains or init debuffs can be removed by certain items or buffs if you or others have them. If not you'll just need to wait them out.

.

C-29 What is This For?
I'm not going to cover everything of course, just answers for some of the more commonly asked items people come across and ask about in OOC. Generally showing the item to recipebot (/tell recipebot <drop item here>) will give you the answer to most of the "what do I do with this odd item?" questions.

A Burnt Out Memory Chip, Circuit board, Copper Wire & Small Power Supply:
These four items can be found as random drops from mobs in the Subway dungeon. If you trade them all together to one of the Ergos on RK (Street West Bank - 1500 x 2715, Wailing Wastes - 550 x 550, Greater Omni Forest - 1200 x 2800) you'll get the first SL ring which has a number of +1 bonuses (need SL to wear it) and can be used on the portal in Nasc to get into Ely (first and second SL areas). As that portal is a pain to get to and you can do other things to get to Ely you don't really need that ring though.

Morphing Memory:
This is dropped by the droids, dogs and MP pet like mobs in the subway dungeon. It's a levelling NCU memory that only goes in the first belt slot and aside from NCU also adds some nano resist. At lower to mid levels it's not that great as you'll be able to twink into better regular NCU memories much more easily due to the psychic requirement of Morphing Memories. Although at higher levels it can be rather nice. Mind you there are the Yuttos NCU memories and others you can get a hold of yourself if you have the expansions (Yuttos ones can be used by fr00bs but someone with SL will need to get them for you) which can be better depending on what you need.

Gift wrapped basket:
You'll see this as random chest loot in missions a lot, it can be traded in for a tool used to make NW towers. Just talk to Supply Master Smug (Clan) or Supply Master Eel (Omni) at the base they're stationed at (Clan in Wailing Wastes, Omni in Avalon) about what you can do to help them. Just keep asking them along those lines and eventually they'll ask you to kill their counterpart. Take that mission (can always delete that mission and get it again later) then if you keep talking to them about things you can do to help they'll tell you they want something to give as a present to the base commander, which is this item.

Dog Tags:
These can be found off of Omni human mobs with certain prefixes to their name (not a 100% drop), in all there are five types. If you go to High Commander Brock located in the back of a Clan outpost SE of Tir at 2860 x 745 in Tir Country you can get missions for buffing rings. These need to be acquired in sequence and you'll need to collect ten of the required type of dog tag to fill one of the dog tag bags he will give you. This is a Clan only quest.

Sensitive Information, Strange Looking Bombs and other such things:
These are mission junk items. You will either be required to find and return them or to just find them. If you right click them some text can float over your head like "Look at this" or "Hooray" but beyond that they have no value if it was just a find item mission.

Weapon Kits & Parts:
These can be found off of RK mobs, in chests in RK mission areas and would end with "this is a tradeskill item" in their description. They're junk, don't pick them up. There's really little reason to make most any of the weapons that can be made with them (the pistol used to make a solar powered pistol for an engineer pistol is the usual exception). They don't sell at shops for much and you can buy them all at QL 1-200 in shops for not too much anyhow so don't even pick them up.

Gems:
Most gems found on RK from mobs and in mission area chests (can also show up in chests in SL dungeons) are just for making creds. If you use a gem cutting tool to cut them then stick them in a prepared filigree ring (platinum is worth the most, silver the least) they can be worth a decent amount. The ones with "pearl by" in their names are worth the most, silver onyx follow not far behind. Rubi-Ka rubies are worth so little they're not really even worth picking up, spring crystals aren't too bad. The rest are all worth the same amount which is a bit more than spring crystals but little more than half of a silver onyx.

Two RK gems, cold stones and soul fragments, can also be used to make some other things. Although they are only of use for those items when the cold stones are QL 145 or higher and soul fragments QL 190 and higher.

SL gems can be made into buffing rings with no wear requirements but the hard part about them is getting the QL 201+ platinum/gold to make the ring base out of. If just getting them to sell don't cut them, that actually reduces their value last I checked but cutting can boost their buff value when made into rings. The ones really worth getting for creds are pearls, those are worth quite a bit, ambers aren't too bad though while ruby pearls are practically worthless.

Jewelery and Ingots:
Most of the jewelery and ingots found on RK from mobs or chests in mission areas can be melted down then used to make rings and some other things. In regards to rings platnium is worth the most, sliver the least (for both sell value and buffing rings), platnium is just the hardest to get since nothing melts down into it so you must get it as ingots. Silver although has one good use which is to make arul saba bracers, around QL 100-125+ are good and QL 140+ silver could be used for all the bracers.

C-30 Can you Rest your Skills?
When you start you'll be given some IPRs (Improvement Point Resets) and you get more at each TL. If you have the expansions then you'll have more IPRs to play with than fr00bs and can also buy them for credits at a terminal in the Hardware Dimension in Jobe Plaza (250 million creds is the base value) or for 50k VP at one of the LE shop terminals in the Tower Shops.

To reset a skill you first must stip off everything from the three tabs in your wear window (ctrl + 1). Next open your skills window ("U"), click the "i" icon in the top left corner of that window, select "reset skill" from the menu that pops up then click on the skill you want to rest in the skills window. When you do that a button will show up towards the bottom of the window with the number of remaining IPR noted beside it, click the button to reset that skill. Map Nav can't be reset and abilities generally can't be reset properly since to raise a skill very much at all you need to increase the related abilities as well.

After big game changes like expansions you may also get a single use "reset all skills" option as well which will reset everything including abilities but still not map nav (some abilities may not be fully reset if you have put some points in map nav). This is a limited time option FC gives us due to the changes that expansion brought us but you don't need that expansion to get the reset. Right now with LE it is possible they will offer another "reset all skills" reset later on (said they might do that before LE came out) but last I heard they have no plans to do so.

.

C-31 What does the Number in Brackets of a Weapons Damage Mean?
This is the crit hit bonus of the weapon which increases your max damage value when you score a crit hit. So if a weapon listed 50-300 (100) when you score a crit hit the damage value of the weapon would be 400 which is then affected by your related weapon skills, your bonuses and the target's AC.
Critical Damage = (((max damage + crit bonus) * (1 + (attack skill mod))) - (target AC /10) + damage buff)

.

C-32 How do I get a Pet?
Only those profs with pet summon or charm pet nanos or those with both AI and an AI pre-order key attatched to their account (just for fun special leet pets) can get some sort of pet. The main pet profs are bureaucrats, engineers and meta-physicists then a few others can use pets in a limitted fashion. Agents using their false profession nano line can use about the first half of MPs attack and heal pets and all the RK charm nanos of bureaucrats but that's it, no bots or MP mez pets. Adventurers get leet charm nanos they can use when morphed as a leet then considering all the animals they can turn themselves into they are sort of their own pet. Traders also have charm nanos (also useable by agents in trader FP mode) and level 220 traders can summon a group of four debuffing pets for a whole 30 seconds but all of those are not of much use.

In all cases you will need to use nanos to either summon or charm your pet. In the case of RK pet summons and charming nanos all of them can be rolled for, the only exceptions being the two MP ones from ToTW and IS.

.

C-33 How do I Rename my Pet?
You can't rename charmed pets but for summoned pets there is a simple chat command you can use which you could then make into a macro to simplfy things for you. Although even if you only have the one pet you will need to select it first for the pet rename command to work (tip: shift+F1 will select your first pet, shift+F2 your second and so on).
/macro petName /pet rename "their new name"

Where pet renaming really comes in handy is when you have multiple pets. Pet commands like /pet attack or /pet terminate allow you to specify which one you want the command to relate to (ex. /pet "pet name" attack). Especially now that we have the option of using multiple shortcut bars having these pet specific macros would be a really good idea.

.

C-34 How do I see what Buffs my Pet has?
The pets window will show you the buffs/de-buffs and such affecting your pets, their current health and has some command buttons as well. Just type "/open pets" while you have a pet out to open it, once opened even if you have no pets or log off it will not disappear so you only need to open it up the one time.

.

C-35 How do I see my current map Coordinates and GS?
Press F9 to see your current position and shift+F9 to see that info plus other things including your GS.

.

C-36 My Shortcut bar Disappeared, How do I get it Back?
Press the "y" key on your keyboard.

.

C-37 Most of my GUI Disappeared, How do I get it Back?
Press the "|" (shift + "\") key on your keyboard (should be just above your return/enter key).

D-01 Don't Just run Missions/Quests all the Time
The best use of missions/quests are specific item rewards or results, quick money and tokens. While they are useful if all you do is run mission after mission you'll get tired of doing them in time so it's important to mix your activities up. There are various places on the planet or in the Shadowlands which offer some good hunting, you can do dungeons, go after dyna-camp bosses, explore and other things. There also will always be people using the looking for team interface (shift + F) to get people for team missions or other group things which is more fun than soloing. Once you have a decent level char you should also try to get into an org but try to get to know an org before you join or join saying you want to use org chat to learn more so you can decide if you want to stay in it. (See pages 68-72 and 78-97 in the manual for more about orgs and some of the advantages of being in one.)

If you have SL there is a series of quests you can do that allow you to go further into the Shadowlands. Then they've been adding batches of new quests to each SL zone since patch 16.2. These can keep you busy but still it's best to mix up where and what you're doing. Going down to the planet now and then can still be fun and/or useful.

Clan and Omni players will want to get higher level token boards but doing missions when you're at a higher level gets you more tokens per mission. To make sure you get a token you need to kill all the enemies in a mission area before completing the tasks. You can get bravery tokens off of sided mobs of the opposite faction at times. When you're a high level you can also do what are commonly called token gun quests or runs which require you to kill level 150-200 guards at the related Clan (Wailing Wastes) or Omni (Avalon) bases for their guns (need twelve guns). Below is how many tokens you get from mission tokens for a given level range.

Tokens gained - character level
1 - 1-14
2 - 15-50
3 - 51-74
4 - 75-99
5 - 100-124
6 - 125-149
7 - 150-174
8 - 175-189
9 - 190+

D-02 Making Money
There is no easy get rich quick method but there are various ways to help you make some creds. The basic ways are to sell things to shops, sell to other players, loot every RK corpse and run missions with a high credits payout. Generally having at least one high level char helps a lot as that means you can get more from missions, more when looting higher level corpses on Rubi-Ka and better items from higher level mobs.

One common means of making credits is by selling blood plasma from refining monster parts or cutting gems and making rings which require a good bit of skill in pharmalogical tech or mechanical engineering. So having an trader, engineer or doctor in your character list can help. Having a higher level trader helps to squeeze every cred you can out as trader shops give more on sales and traders are the only ones with comp lit buffs (self only). Traders are just one of the harder characters to work with solo, but are useful in a team when used correctly. They are not good characters for a newbie though. Be aware though that it is not good to stick points into trade skills (other than computer literacy) till about level 100-150 as you will need the points elsewhere more and IP will be very tight till then. So money through trade skilling is more a means for a higher level char. Although you can collect bags of them and ask a higher level tradeskiller to process the items for you.

There are various buffing weapons people will do missions for to get at specific QLs. Items will give specific bonuses for a series of QLs so for buffing items it's best to get them at the lowest QL in that range so they're easier to equip (ex. QL 10 Concrete Cushions are worth much more than QL 11-159 ones). Check the item database sites given earlier to search for good buffing items, pay attention to what people are looking for or selling in the market channels and look at the list of ability buffing items at AO Mainframe. To make getting specific item rewards from missions much easier and faster get Click Saver from halorn.com, you will need to be at certain levels to roll the items at those ideal QLs though.

What those seeking mission rewards typically do is blitz them. Blitzing is when you do a mission as fast as you can for just the mission reward. You don't want to stop to kill anything just run like hell so repair or find mob missions are the best mission types. The best blitzers will then be fixers what with their high run speed bonuses, evades, grid transfers and the fixer grid to get them there and back quickly. Fixers aren't that great when trying to roll an item at a specific QL though as they get a bonus to the reward item QL. You can use the info from the mission settings info post on the AO forums to help get the types you want.

Good Money Making Methods for Low Level Characters:
There are some that can be done in good time for Clan and Neutral players but Omni ones either wouldn't be able to do them or have a hard time as they often fall in Clan areas. All of these are repeatable but would have a level limit.
-Rollerrat tails (Clan): Kill rollerrats for their tails (any will do) then hand them in to Tirbo Ratchatcher in West Athens at 325 x 360. For every rollerrat tail you bring him you get 500 credits, up to 500 XP and a piece of armour at the QL of your level. This quest is for characters levels 1-15. It would be a good idea to save the tails you get when running missions or such then give them to your new characters for some quick money and XP rather than hunting rollerrats at that level as doing other things given the time it can take will make you much more money.
-Report Delivery (Clan): Standing beside the whom-pah to Tir in Old Athens is a NPC that will give you a delivery to another NPC in Tir, who happens to be in Tir standing beside the whom-pah to Old Athens. As a result you can do this one about twice in a minute. The money you get for delivery quests is 40 x your level. You can do this for the first thirty levels.
-Items to Roll: In those earlier levels your best money making items to roll are QL 10 Concrete Cushions and QL 22 OT-Windchaser M06 Quartz (the treatment rifle). You can sell the cushions for about 100K-150K each and the rifles for 300K-500K each. QL 44 Galahad Inc T70 Beyer (+20 comp lit each and can be dualed) are another fairly low QL item that people often want. Those you can sell for about 500K-800K each. People will only want what they want when they want it so making credits by selling things to players on the shopping channel can be rather hit and miss.
Note:
-Get the doll back: As of the 17.5 patch the shop sell value of the lanterns has been reduced to about 10 creds so it is of no use as a money making method for new players anymore.

Making money at Higher Levels:
Your best money will come from selling things to people which will generally be special drops from boss/unique/named RK, SL or AI mobs. Aside from that blitzing a number of missions in the same general area with high cred payouts are good if you need some quick cash. Omni battle suits at high QLs sold by a high level trader with plenty of comp lit at a trader shop will get several hundred thousand to over one million credits each and generally aren't too hard to roll (there are two types, regular and elite, elite are worth a bit more but not enough more to only roll them). QL 160 or near to that six slot belts can be sold for a few to several million or so and QL 150-200 NCU memories at ideal QLs at about 1mil-3mill each. While those can be rolled they're usually rather hard to painfully hard to roll though so for creds in a hurry blitzing missions for just the credits or Omni battle suits would be better.

D-03 Some Notes on Twinking
First off unless you're doing it to get a PvP char or a special use char (ex. a char for a lvl locked area) ready you really don't have to twink your char up as much as possible. It can be handy and saves some credits/time such as getting your agent fresh off of newbie island into that QL 50 Perennium Sniper or your char into at least some QL 100 implants as soon as possible but generally it's not something you have to do. Some will obsess about getting every nano and twink their char into the best possible gear every five levels or so but in the time it took to get and/or do all that you really would have been better off teaming with others to level your char. Do some twinking for PvE but don't let the obsession to get into the best gear as soon as possible ruin the game for you.

That said the first and most important thing to do is plan. Make sure you know exactly what you need to do to get what you want. If it's a long process write it down step by step, make sure you have all the required items then go from there. You do not want to be figuring it all out while the buffs you begged others for are running out, figure it all out first. When it comes to finding things for twinking the search options of AO Mainfraim will be your best friend. Then AO Mainframe also has a list of ability buffing items which is rather handy.

It's important that you have enough NCU for all those buffs (at least at the time you get them, you can safely pull NCU and NCU bonus items out after you get the buffs), a number of good +ability implants and gear plus treatment items like an Omni-Med Suit will also be crucial (a physician helmet or Biomech helmet plus a Biomech cloak are good for completing your treatment set, higher QL Biomech boots and helmets will give better bonuses). If you really want to get in the best stuff have a series of ability and skill implants at increasing QLs so you can keep swapping lower QL ones for better ones. The two abilities you can buff up the most at earlier levels with various things will be stamina and agility so building your implants so they use either of those will make it easier to get better ones in sooner (strength is also easy to buff but not as useful to all profs so some may let it slide to save on IP).

You will also find the first step may be in working out how to get those good buffing items equipped. So if you're doing some serious twinking first you need to wedge in and on all your buffing items then you can move to cramming the things you actually want in/on. With weapons you can first equip a weapon that increases the skill you need to equip a different one then replace the buffing one with the one you want in one action. With armour and implants though that does not work so you need to plan with that in mind.

.

D-04 Tips on Getting Buffs and Services
At some point everyone will need to ask for something, the problem is some don't go about it in a very effective manner. Here's some basic rules to help you out.

0. No one is required to give you anything. Not a rule to help you get it, just something that needs to be understood. While many will be willing to buff you or what not if they can they don't have to if they don't want to.

1. Be polite. Please should not be a side thought if they don't hop up and buff or agree right away, it should be there in the initial request. Also if someone is building your implants for you or doing other trade skilling be patient, it can take a while. Complaining to them a minute or so after you handed a pack more more of them to the person (or most any length of time after really) that they are taking too long is a very bad idea.

2. Don't pester the person. This goes with the be polite rule but I thought I'd split it off. Some will ask over and over and over again for several minutes, jump around the person, dance and so on, don't. Ask politely, wait a bit then move on as they may either not be interested, be away from their computer, dual logged or other things. If they come back and see the request and are willing they'll send you a tell. Annoying the person could get you added to their ignore list then not only will you not get help this time you won't in the future either.

3. Be specific. I see things like "I need someone to make something for me" or "I need a wrangle" a lot, neither provide much info so will limit the number of people that can help you. If you want a wrangle (trader buff that adds to your basic attack skills and nano skills) indicate the amount of skill you require from the wrangle. With RK wrangles they range from 3-132, the SL ones can go up to 153 (but have lvl requirements) so just saying I need a wrangle isn't as useful as listing the amount you need from the wrangle. If you're looking for something to be crafted for you list the required skills and how much is required or the type of item and the highest QL that needs to be crafted. Although when looking for crafters don't specify any one prof as there is more than one trade skilling prof in AO. Traders and engineers are your better all around trade skillers but other profs have their specialties.

4. Remember to say thank-you. The person didn't have to help you but did anyhow, it's only right you thank them for that.

5. Just ask. If you want to ask for something, ask. Some will start by just saying "hi" like if they were trying to strike up a conversation or with "can you help me?" Just politely ask for what you want.
.

Understanding and following those rules will help you get what you want while breaking them can have the opposite effect. Now for some tips.

1. You could start with the OOC channel in major sided cities, all cities that have their own zone for a side are grouped so chat in one is heard in others (Neutral: Borealis, Newland City - Clan: Old Athens, West Athens, Tir - Omni: Rome (all parts), Omni-Trade, Omni-Entertainment). A lot of people have OOC off in favour of their org chat though so if you can't get someone in your org to help I find actually running around and looking for someone in a city works better than asking in OOC most of the time. Doesn't hurt to try though.

2. Use /list to help you, "/list doc" for instance will list the doctors in your current zone. /list shows the name, prof, side and level of those characters, although people can use /anon and then will not be shown by /list.

3. Check out common gathering locations in cities like around grid terminals, GMS terminals (the AI shop search things) and in front of some shops.

4. Tells generally will work better than asking in vicinity. Tells is one thing most would never turn off, vicinity, OOC and others they may.

5. Tips usually don't matter. Some think unless you offer a tip people won't do it, usually it's just a matter of finding someone willing, the tip didn't do a thing. It's one thing if you're talking about a craft that takes a lot of trade skill as unlike nano skills improving your trade skills are largely optional. Many feel that charging for buffs is pretty sad, if you want to tip that's nice but most would do it for free as they needed the nano for themselves anyhow.

.

D-05 Notes on Doing Missions:
-You can get missions generated on demand from mission terminals which look sort of like vending machines with a spinning letter "M" on them and can be found in cities and most outposts. Right click them to open the mission request interface, when you accept a mission you will be given a key to enter the mission area which will be randomly generated for you. See pages 56-58 in the manual for more basic info.
-When you get a mission from a terminal it will be stored in the mission window (ctrl+4). Clicking on it will open the info window on that mission, if you right click it you will get a menu to either see the info, upload the mission to your map or delete it.
-As of patch 16.3 you can hold up to twenty missions at a time (increased from nine).
-All missions will have a time limit you must complete the mission in if you want the reward it offers, solo ones will be 48 hours, team ones could be just a few hours to about ten. Be aware that this time limit will continue to tick on when you log off.
-Once you load a mission to your map you can open your planet map (press P and use the Dovve or CSP planet map on RK) then click on the mission button at the bottom of that window to center the map on the mission location (shown as a "M" icon). This will help you figure out how to get to the correct zone then once in the right zone there will be a dot on your compass and on your PF Map to help get you there.
-The zones you'll be sent to for missions will depend on the mission level and the zone you pulled the mission in, which terminal in a zone you use makes no difference. When pulling missions for specific item rewards it's best to go around to different zones pulling a few sets of missions at each to check where you can expect to be sent till you find a zone that sends you to the highest number of easy to get to locations for the level you'll be pulling the missions at.
-To get a token from completing a mission you will want to kill everything in the mission area before completing the assigned task so you have a 100% chance of a token, also mobs can't be grey to you to improve your chance for a token. As you kill more opponents your chance to get a token will increase and you'll be told what it is after each kill once you've killed a few. Mobs that pop out of traps, guard turrents, security cameras and the bot they spawn count as bonus mobs so you can have 100% before everything is dead (I've also seen mobs in larger rooms or halls respawn at times). Neutral players and those using shades will have no use for tokens though.
-The XP reward of a mission will only be gained if you get a token at the end, the money and item will be gained either way though.
-Whatever you're to find in a mission they always seem to be in large or long rooms or at times in hallways (not the first one though), you won't find them in the little side rooms. The closest thing to an exception to that is when the small rooms are inside a larger room rather than off to the side. With team missions though the goal is always found in the boss room and the level buttons can be anywhere including small side rooms.
-You can use the info from the mission settings info post on the AO forums to help get the types you want.

Tips on getting what you want from a mission:
-If you want tokens it's best to pull solo missions at the lowest level you can where all the mobs will still be green (grey mobs won't increase your chance for tokens when you kill them) as you can clear them more quickly. Check what level range you can team with others at (/tell helpbot team <your level>) and pull missions at least a bit higher than the lowest level in that range. Setting the difficulty slider to just over the first or second "s" in "missions" of the "Request Missions" button below it always seems to work for me. Ones where you are to find, return or repair an item are the best for token grinding and get them all in the same area so you don't have to travel around too much. Also spread your token grinding out some so you don't have to do too many at a time which can be a pain.
-If you want money do high level missions of any type but kill person and get them all around the same area so you don't have to run around much between mission areas. Find person or repair types should be easier to do quickly though.
-If you want XP from missions do high level team missions and select ones all in the same area to reduce travel time.
-If you want just the item reward then generally you'll want to just get in, do the task and get out. Repair or find person types will be the easiest to complete quickly. Find person/mob ones can be handy, especially if you're lucky but can take more care. Rolling find item ones though can give you two chances for the item you want, these items can just be harder to spot. Use Click Saver (halorn.com) to help you roll the items you want.

The five basic types:
-Find item this could be a real (armour, weapon, nano, etc...) or useless item, just left click the item to complete it. These are good when trying to roll for certain items as finding real items gives an extra chance to roll the item you want and sometimes both the item you're to find (and can keep) and reward are good. Set the sliders to full bad and full money to get a few or so find real item missions per set for at least the first few missions you accept.
-Return item ones are like find item ones but here you must pick up the item then bring it back to the same terminal you got the mission from.
-Repair item missions will have you find some sort of gizmo and use an item you were given when you got the mission on it. These are a lot easier to spot than items can be at times and don't attack like mobs so if doing missions for tokens these will be the best ones in my opinion.
-Find person/mob like the find item ones but will be a mob instead. Since they'll show up on your map and at times could be the only red/white/orange/blue dot on it they can be easy to do quickly if you're lucky. You just need to be quick and careful as you may need to select them before they attack you and at times could be the same side as you. If they attack you and targeting isn't ending the mission exit the mission area and then go back in. One thing to note is that while the mission description may sound like you're looking for a human type mob it could be a monster type instead.
-Kill person/mob ones are like the find ones but here of course you need to kill your target. Generally speaking these are the worst of the bunch for any purpose.

.

D-06 "Nano Crystal" and "NanoCrystal"
For most nanos the item forms of them start with either "Nano Crystal" or "NanoCrystal" which tell you about how you can get them. AI nanos are nano cubes which you make using various items dropped by different mobs.

"NanoCrystal":
Generally these are loot only nanos dropped by dyna type mobs or team mission bosses. Although there will be some lower QL ones you can also get in RK and Jobe nano shops which you can also roll for. Typically these are more specialized and desirable nanos like fixer log HoTs, ones that reduce the time of roots, snares or calms, self only skill buffs and other such things. The fixer grid ones are also "NanoCrystal" types but can only be acquired through the fixer grid quests.

"Nano Crystal":
Generally these are buyable and/or rollable items but as always there are some exceptions. The fixer grid armour nanos are "Nano Crystal" types but you can't roll them as they only show up a disks originally, never completed nanos (you have to do that yourself or get someone else to build it for you). The engineer team warp also can't be rolled and a few of the higher QL NT attack nanos are loot only despite being "Nano Crystal" types. I'm sure there are others but you get the idea.

The SL nanos you can buy in gardens or sanctuaries generally are not rollable, although if also found in RK/Jobe nano shops they may be rollable. Not all SL nanos are buyable in gardens or sanctuaries though, a number of the shade and keeper ones are rollable for instance. The MP nanos to make crystals for PBs you could buy from the Ely garden as one or more random ones tend to show up there, you can also get at least most of them from hecks as random drops. Other SL nanos buyable in gardens / sanctuaries can also show up as random loot from various SL mobs. The LE "Nano Crystal" nanos are buyable with VP but of course not rollable, same with the vet shop nanos.

Anarchy Online ClickSaver Rollability Facts is a good source for info on whether or not a nano or item is rollable, I think I have seen the odd error or bit of missing info but even so it's quite useful.

.

D-07 Macros
Macros let you put chat command functions onto your shortcut bar which can come in especially handy to pet profs due to all their /pet commands. Below are some rather handy general use macros you may want to make use of yourself.

/macro assist /assist
Basic assist command.

/macro Tassist /assist %t
Specific target assist.

/macro makeAss /macro Tassist /assist %t
A macro that lets you make specific target assist macros (very handy).

/macro tell /tell %t
Opens a tell window to the target.

There are also variables of sorts you can use in a macro (or script) which can come in handy in some cases. The currently selected target one (%t) was used in most of the above examples for instance.

%m
yourself

%f
your fighting opponent

%t
your current target

A macro can also be used to send a small message to a specified chat channel but the max length of a macro is rather small. To send a message of any real length or with things like colours or custom info windows you'll need to use a script. Another handy thing you can use a macro for is to call on a script.

/macro {macro name} /script {script name}

.

D-08 Basic AO Scripting
Scripts are text files you can put in the scripts folder of the main AO game folder (add the folder yourself if it's not there already). You can call them up by typing "/script <InvalidTag name>" or with just "/<InvalidTag name>" but remember to include the file extension (.txt). Scripts are what you'll need to use to make text on chat channels different colours, include links to custom info windows and that sort of thing. You can't use scripts to control character actions, just chat and emote functions. Someone else can not call the scripts you have on your computer, only you can. Another thing to note is that you can only have one script running on a character at the same time.

Scripts and macros pretty much go hand in hand so if you want to make some scripts you should also read over the above macro section.

.
Size Limits
A single script file can be no larger than 4KB in size and you can only send at most 1KB of data to an open chat channel at one time. Although if there are many people in the chat region of the side you are sending the script to (ex. "Clan OOC" when in OA, Tir or WA) the amount of data you can send to the chat channel at once will be further reduced. The 1KB limit also applies to tells but rather than giving you an error message when it's too big as when sending to open chat channels you instead are kicked off-line. To send someone anything any bigger than 1KB you will need to use a chat bot (small third-party app or related that logs itself onto just the AO chat server). For various available org/chat/raid bots and related help check out AO Devs.

.
General Functions and Related
All the various chat commands like /tell, /played and emote commands like /disco or /greet will work in a script. Also when sending info to an open chat channel everything you want to show up together as one message to that channel will need to be on one line in the script.

You will notice a number of the things listed below are the same as HTML tags but AO chat only allows for a small number of those tags. The thing you need to be careful about when using HTML tags in scrips though is the " and ' characters used to inclose different parts. The " of a tag inside another tag will close the " of the first one causing the whole script to be buggered up. Unfortunately you can't just add a \ to avoid that problem then if you want to add a " in the text (not in a tag) use "e. The first example below will fail but the second will work.
<A HREF="text://<FONT COLOR="#FFFFFF">white</FONT>">hi</A>
<A HREF="text://<FONT COLOR='#FFFFFF'>white</FONT>">hi</A>

.
/script {script name}
-This can also be used inside a script to call another one or repeat the current one.

/delay {number; 1000 = 1 second}
-Allows you to specify a pause between script actions in thousandths of a second. One thing I've noticed is the first time you call on a script on a char when you login the first /delay takes far longer than it should but after that they're all fine.

/r {message}
-Your message would be sent to whoever sent you a tell last.

/g "{chat channel name}" {message}
-This lets you specify the chat channel your message will go to. If you skip it the message will just go to the active channel of the active chat window.
-/g "Clan OOC" Hi everyone!

<BR>
-This is the basic line break tag from HTML.

<FONT COLOR="#FFFFFF"></FONT>
-This allows you to colourize your text. The "FFFFFF" above would produce white text, the numbers are in hexadecimal and split into three character pairs, the first two for red, the next two for green and the last two blue. FF = 255 while 00 = 0 (gives you 256 possibilities for each pair) then you want to put your text to be coloured between the opening and closing tags (always remember to use a closing tag). There are also so defined colours in AO which are listed in the last three examples here.
-<FONT COLOR="#FFFFFF">this text is white</FONT> <FONT COLOR="#FF0000">this text is red</FONT> <FONT COLOR="#00FF00">this text is green</FONT> <FONT COLOR="#0000FF">this text is blue</FONT> <FONT COLOR="#900000">this text is dark red</FONT>
-<FONT COLOR=CCInfoHeadline>orange</FONT>
-<FONT COLOR=CCInfoHeader>bright green</FONT>
-<FONT COLOR=CCInfoText>green</FONT>

<U></U>
-Lets you make the text between the two tags underlined.

<I></I>
-Lets you make the text between the two tags italicized.

<CENTER></CENTER>
-Lets you make the text between the two tags centered in the custom info window.

Note:
-You can imbed tags inside another tag, for instance the below would be bold yellow and underlined.
-<FONT COLOR="#FFDF00"><U>this is bold yellow and underlined text</U></FONT>

<A HREF="chatcmd://"></A>
-Lets you create chat links that use chat commands like /tell or /g.
-<A HREF="chatcmd:///tell charname hi">link</A> : clicking on it sends a tell to charname that says "hi", note that three / are used

<A HREF="itemref://lowid/highid/ql">Item Name</A>
-Lets you add item info links. Although you'll only be able to fit about fifteen or less links before the script gets too big due to the side of these links. "lowid" and "highid" are the AO item ID numbers, you can find that out by running a search on the item at one of the item database sites and looking at the number at or towards the end of the link for the item at the lowest and highest in the available QL range of the item. highid would be 1 higher than the lowid unless it is an item that only shows up at one QL, those have the same lowid and highid.
-<A HREF='itemref://217686/217687/152'>QL 152 First Tier Martial Artist Body Armor</A>

<A HREF="text://"></A>
-Use this to create custom info windows. The below for instance gives a link ("click here to open") to open the info window which has "Hi there!" on the first line and a link ("send me a tell") to open a tell window to a character named myname on the second line. Please note the use of " and ' in the below example.
-<A HREF="text://Hi there!<BR><A HREF='chatcmd:///tell myname'>send me a tell</A>">click here to open</A>

<IMG SRC="rdb://itemImgeID">
-Add game icons inside your script. To find out the itemImgeID search for the item in one of the database sites then look at the file name of the image shown for that item, that's the itemImgeID.

.
Below is a very small script called "idleStopper.txt" which will contact the game server every 2.5 minutes using /played. If you ever noticed you're kicked off-line when sitting around a backyard just chatting or idling this would help you to maintain contact with the game server so that doesn't happen.

/played
/delay 150000
/script idleStopper.txt

D-09 Personal Help Files
There's a lot of little details, locations and so forth in this game, so many that you could never remember all of it on your own very well. This is where personal help files come in and can be a huge help (should also keep some paper and a pencil on hand too). Then another use for personal help files is to include chat commands and the like you could make use of so you don't have to make many scripts. Like with scrips you can only access the help files on the computer you're playing AO on.

All these help files are really are text files you can use some HTML tags in that will open in an info window like you get when shift clicking an item. To open a file use "/showfile <file name>" but remember to add the related file extention (ex. .txt or .html). The location it will look in for the specified file from the AO main folder is "/cd_image/text/help/".

.
Below is a sample personal help file to give you an idea of some of the things you can do and you may want to use yourself. Note the second last line, this is a link that would open the "MainMenu.html" file. Using a main menu or directory file with a link back to it on each page will let you navigate your help files more easily no matter how many you have.

D-10 Setting up the Options and GUI of a New Character in a Hurry
Because of how I use multiple main and extra chat windows set-up in a certain way, like to have the various windows set-up and located just so and so on setting up all those GUI options would take about thirty minutes. That would be a pain in the butt but doing that all manually each time can be easily avoided.

What I did a ways back was I set-up everything the way I wanted on a new character including the basic non-character specific set-up of my short-cut bars then logged out. Then I just copied the characer folder of that character and pasted a copy of it somewhere else, renamed it something like "new character prefs" and I was all set for future characters. Now when I make a new char right after making it I log out, delete the contents of the new charcter's pref folder, copy paste in the files I saved in that "new character prefs" folder and I'm done. So instead of taking about thirty minutes to set all that up on a new character it takes me about three minutes instead.

Another option to speed things up is to make a new char, log it out, delete the contents of its pref folder then copy paste in the pref files of an old char you already have set up the way you want. Next log in your new char and remove all the nanos and such in your shortcut bars specific to that other char (learned nanos are recorded on the servers, not the pref files), log out then copy paste the new char's pref folder somewhere else and rename that. The plus side of doing that is it will save you some time, the down side it will include some useless info like that regarding packs on your old char.

Note:
Aside from window locations and set-up most things in the options window (F10) are also saved but not everything. Everything under "Behavior" of the options window for instance are not saved in the preference files. Characters on the friends list and some other things are not saved in the preference files either as those sort of things are recorded on the servers instead. Basically what is recorded in the preference files are client side things while server interaction things relating to a char are recorded on the servers.

Where to find the files:
In the "prefs" folder of the main AO game folder you'll find sub folders for each of your accounts then sub folders inside those for each character named with the character ID number for server it's on. You can find out your character's ID number by pressing shift + F9 when you're logged in with it.

.

D-11 Quests - Handing things into NPCs
Various quests can have you hand in items and/or some credits to progress the quest chain. Once you have the related quest in your mission window though you can speed things up by just opening the NPC trade window (the button at the bottom of the NPC chat window of a hand with a box in it) and putting what was required in it. Considering how chatty some NPCs are doing this rather than going through the chat to get them to open that little window for you can speed things up a fair bit at times.

.

D-12 Attack Speed, Attack Rating, Defence Rating, AC and Damage Taken, Agg/Deff and Crits
-Your attack rating is based on your related attack skills for your weapon/nano and any AddAllOff bonuses you may have. That is compared to your target's related defence rating to determine your chance of hitting it.
-There are four defence ratings and the one used when attacked depends on the type of attack used against you. Your defence rating is based on how many points you have in the related defence skill (the three evades and Nano Resist) and any AddAllDef bonuses you may have.
-Critical hits have a base 3% chance. Crit hit bonuses increase this then if your attack rating is much higher than the target's defence rating you will get another bonus.

-Every 10 points of a related AC reduces the damage inflicted on you by 1 but the damage done can never be lower than the attacks min damage plus damage bonuses.

-Every 300 points in the related weapon initiative lowers the attack time by 0.5 seconds and recharge time by 1 second. Neither can be below one second.
-Every 200 points in nano cast initiative takes one second off your attack time and recharge time for nanos. These can be below one second but some nanos have caps for which can be either above or below one second.
-The Agg/Def slider affects your attack speed and defence rating. At about 88% there is no effect, at 100% you attack more quickly but have a defence rating penalty, at 0% you get a defence rating bonus but also an attack speed penalty.
-The recharge rate of specials and specials min recharge rate is affected by the attack or recharge rates on the related weapon and how much you have in the weapon special. For instance burst uses the recharge time of a weapon so a weapon with a faster recharge time will let you use burst more often than one with a longer recharge time.

Agg/Def Slider Attack Time Affects:
100% -0.25s
88% 0s
75% +0.25s
50% +0.75s
25% +1.25s
0% +1.75s
(every 12.5% modifies your attack speed plus or minus 0.25 seconds)

-Due to the affect of dual weilding you lose about 33% the attack time for both weapons so you do about 66% the number of attacks with either weapons that you'd be doing if you single weilded them. If you had two with the same attack & recharge rates the number of attacks made with both weapons combined though works out to about a 33% boost of what it would be if single wielded either.
-ex. If you would have made 100 attacks in a fixed time had you single weilded the weapon you will make about 66 attacks with each if you dual weiled it resulting in a total of about 133 attacks.
-If both weapons have a the same attack special the one in your right hand is the one that will perform the special attack when used.

D-13 Regarding Temple of Three Winds
There's always a lot of people there but I really hate that place, the only good thing about it is the annoyingly good drops you can get which are all of course nodrop. Even if you have the expansions you'll want to go there for at least some of them. But other than drops it doesn't have much value as decent fr00b XP areas (and everywhere else for that matter) are frequented by large trains of mobs. Besides, a team of about level 30-45+ chars could manage the floaters or even bloaters in the foremans sewers and get far more XP (XP cap even if below lvl 45 or so). Plus unlike ToTW there are exit buttons in foremans here and there which will send you back to the entrance (inside the dungeon) if you get in trouble, worn passes you can get keep most mobs from attacking you and a warp from Borealis item will send you just outside the front door when used in Bor. Then if you have SL you can get far better XP in various areas of Nasc than in ToTW. So really beyond the items there's no reason to spend any length of time in that hell hole.

Any rate, I'll just rhyme off most of the ToTW items in three lists, "Worth Getting", "Good but Far too Rare" and "Not Worth Getting." While the "Worth Getting" items are nice you won't want to get all of them as some are prof specific or of little to no use to some profs. The "Good but Far too Rare" items are just that, items that would be nice to get but can be so absurdly rare they're not really worth the time to get. If you really want them then go for it but expect to be camping for them a long time. "Not Worth Getting" items aren't really even worth picking up actually. I did make this at first to indicate the type of item each were, who dropped them, drop rate and extra notes for some but it made this section far larger than I wanted so I just chopped that extra info out.

.

quite the amazing guide but I almost think it's normal to see someone from the community taking time out to help newbies. One of the reasons I love Ao and have two pay accts. I never would have stuck with the game if it wasnt for all the help I received from vets during my inital period. It's a demanding game with a high learning curve, and things for someone completely new to it can be a bit overwhelming.

Someone always answered my questions no matter how dumb I felt asking them in ooc. it Kept me from just quiting. (which would have been a shame because once that baby MP you made has a title like Diety you look back on the journey and ask yourself how the fuxor did I mange this)

a few notes as an adittion tho. when rolling those concrete cusions and low level treatm, ent riffles and int pistols, remember before you level out of range to get yourself a set. dont think purely money. If high lvl people wantr these things might it not be wise to get yourself a set? :)

Sure but it's easier and faster to just look it up in something like this you may have on hand than to ask and wait for an answer. Also with chat being divided by region while you should get an answer if you're in someplace like a city if you're out in the field somewhere there's less people to provide help.

cushions and such

Of course but that section was about making money, not what you should get for your chars.

One thing that needs added to is ports to open. I can't remember now, but there were extra ports added awhile back.

Hmmm, can't find the article yet. Maybe you do have them all. I'll double check to make sure.

Ah, you were right. 7500-7600 were the ones added::::20::

I was just taking note of your comment about AO. Its seems like a game I want to get involved in but I might need as much help as you did so I have a couple questions and if you could answer them that would be awesome!

1. Is it free to play?

2. Whats your name in the game/server your character is in? (Maybe you could help me out)

3. What would you say is the step-by step in downloading the game? (I've always had problems with torrent and all that so whats the easiest way to do it?)

Hope thats not too much but if you could help me out I'd really appreciate it.

I rock....

First off, it's been stickied, heh, didn't actually think it would happen and never asked but I guess they took note of it and thought it was worth jabbing a pin in.

Where'd you get the idea I needed a lot of help? Took a few messed up chars to get the hang of building my chars when I started but other than that I found most things quite straight forward. AO is not complicated, it has a number of little things to get used to but no one aspect of it is hard or confusing. See "A-02 Is it Complicated?"

1. See "A-01 Is it Really Free?"

2. RK2 (Rimor) and I have about ten chars so the reverse would be easier as I bounce around between them a fair bit.

3. See "A-03 Getting Started (Downloading & Patching)"

It would seem you didn't even look at the FAQ.
