As mentioned everywhere else in AO forums, the Graphics upgrade is likely to arrive with the 18.0 patch.  Currently, the 17.9 patch just arrived on the test server.  I would imagine the graphics upgrade to arrive this fall.

It'll be out when it's out, has nothing to do with any other MMO.  They put it out when it's ready, but they have indicated they expect it out sometime this year.

Agreed.

What most are not understanding is that something of this magnitude can not be done in a month or two. The only other mmorpg I know of to have any real form of graphics upgrade was Dark Age of Camelot ( accessible only through paid expansions even ). Now look at the upgraded graphics of DAoC and the graphics planned for AO. The difference is phenomenal.

Funcom is taking a game with NO directX capability other than a small bit of dx7 code for mouse/keyboard interfacing, and changing it to dx9. Although this sounds miniscule when you say it, the actual amount of coding involved to transform an entire existing game to a new format is ridiculous. They are basically rebuilding the game from the bottom up.

Imagine how much time would be involved if they were making AO just now, without the benefit of already having the game laid out for them as far as art assets ( which will be another big undertaking once the engine itself is put out ), quests, items, story, etc.

Agreed.  I bet at one point they considered just building from scratch using the AoC engine (if only for a fleeting moment).  After all, they're using it on TSW as well.

Still, like others, I'll be eager to see the results.  You can bet that trial subs will sharply rise for a few weeks when it happens ;)

Nice thing is Sil has said that they intend to keep the free AO/Notum Wars deal even after the upgrade, so froobs don't have to worry about being cut out of the fun.

I think that with the success of Age of Conan, they sould take thier time, and re-launch AO (with a Retail Collectors edition, in the same vein, but SF of course as the AoC one) with ALL expansions, all updated to the new graphics engine. They could call it Anarchy Online Complete, or The Ultimate Anarchy Online collection, I for one, would return to it!

~Eve~

I think they would have to redo the AO web site as well. It looks dated.

Their web site was completely redone a little over a year ago so it is unlikely they would redo it again.  As it is now, it is a bit too bandwidth-intensive for my taste but not as bad as their conan site.

They upgraded it, to worse I think. AoC's site might change from flash, atleast I hope so. Community site is pretty good, works fast and doesn't look too bad...

Summer/late this year, I won't be waiting for more than huge performance increase, also likely better water and other effects as well.... BTW AoC's water was hot, sea atleast rivers wasn't so good...
