I just noticed that as of 1:09pm CST this game is the most popular game today and 2nd most popular for the week on MMORPG.com's Most Popular Games list. Why though? Is there some recent news I am not seeing?

Once a few people see this and get it on the home page list everyone is like "ZOMG WTF AC2?!?!?!!" amd spam it just as you and i did lol

Apparently a lot of people just got trolled if they all believed someone who said it was coming back online and going f2p. Turbine has made no such announcement.

Yeah its a shame that Turbine didn't have the tech to switch Ac2 over before they closed it down. You would have seen a DDO type of recovery and the game would still be around.
