This may sound a bit weird but I would actually prefer if they relaunched it with a monthly fee. I'm not rich.. Not even close. F2P games just ALWAYS attract all the wrong people it seems. A lot of my AC-love comes from the community in those games and I would hate to see it turn into a 1337-kiddie spam fest.
Of course they couldn't expect to get $15 like new games but the costs of running an older game can't possibly be anywhere near the costs of a new game anyway.

F2P: I probably wouldn't play it.
Smaller monthly fee: I would be there the second it reopened. :)

I wouldnt worry too much about leet-kiddies playing AC2. I assume they wouldnt last long in a game they couldnt reach level-cap, almost no gear rewards for big quests/raids, and very little solo quests available ;)

I remember There being More single player quests than group, I remember a lot of the issue was the gear that dropped was always for the wrong level range. if you went with looted gear, if you went with crafted after the crafting changes, it was easy to solo most quests and some classes could solo a lot of the group quests.

Only a very few of the group quests could be soloed, crafted or no crafted gear, like: Rashans Last Word for example. Mind you that I am mostly just talking about lvl 40+ content here.

In the beginning of the game, from level 1-30, there is alot of solo content, but from there on its mostly just group content.

Edit: Thanks for the Linky. Interesting read.

I don't understand all the AC2 hate.. granted it was my first MMO, and I did not play AC and make the transition from AC -> AC2, but many people loved the game, I did.. I only played for one year, but a lot of my friends quit for Everquest and I left with them forever. However, I kinda regret that decision, because EQ was never AC2 to me, and no game ever has been.

You, the people who hate, keep downgrading this game, saying it was awful, when in reality it was a great game with a lot of flaws, but what MMO isn't? That's the nature of this business, and just because you hated the game, does not mean you should wish ill for it, or to even wish it not to exist.. I just don't understand that mentality.

It's like people who hate Blizzard for making the MMO industry so big, and have so many "casuals" and "instant gratification", when in reality if Blizzard and SOE had not come along and brought the numbers that they have, this genre would be niche.. small and there wouldnt be as much variety as there is today and I see this AC2 hate as the same flow of anger, every game isn't meant to tack on to the other game, it was a sequel in lore and land, not in gameplay.

The e-mail I received from Turbine yesterday about the 10th year of AC made us think about AC2 and how it would be nice if they set up 1 server, as a free to play, or low cost game. My partner and I were talking last night about how much we miss it and how it would be fun to jump in again :)

AC2 Was my first MMO love and sometimes when i think about it, has been my only real MMO love, even after years of playing every other games out there, all those wow level 80s characters, age of conan, Aion, WAR, you name it I have played it, my best memories are still with AC2 and the great community we had

Turbine has a great setting for a sequel, unique races (no stupid Orcs!), and I really beleive, if well done, it would draw crowds if they considered a 3rd game.

bringing this game back would be a good idea Ac needs a remake, and an updated engine would rock. I never played AC but i have heard many good things that would make me play this game.

I can't believe Turbine made DDO F2P hoping to increase revenues instead of offering a station pass to all their games and include AC2 servers. Turbine has AC2 fans begging to give them money and they won't take it!!

If Turbine offered a special, and I mean special, (like the rainbow eep) in-game item for previous AC2 players for returning and a second item for new accounts you bring with you, AC2 would be in the green in the first 90 days. I mean the game is already done. Ya, like most games it could use a few more tweaks, but the millions in developement is already done and paid for!!

millions of dollars in IP collecting dust instead of dollars.  It's hard to believe their CFO is ok with that.

It's unfortunate that they let Microsoft manage this game at the beginning. if they had a better launch (AoC's launch was leagues better), they may have had a better retention rate, more advertisements, more hype, more a lot of things. Unfortunately that didn't happen, and unfortunately this game may never come back again.

I mean in any form at all, because, Turbine squashed a emu effort and I think there is a german group working on one, but it's hard to tell if they are actively working on it or not, and no word from Turbine if they will bring it back. :(

I would prefer they updated the original game. I never did like AC2 for some reason.

I submitted a question to the devs of AC1 recently as it was part of the 10th anniversary and it was answered...

-------------------------------------------------------------

"Does Turbine or the dev team have any plans to revisit the Asheron's Call "universe" and make a new game based on this or a new expansion to the original Asheron's Call?"

Turbine is always evaluating all kinds of game opportunities. That said, new games have a notorious tendency to fracture existing player bases, but in the future who knows?

As for new Asheron's Call "expansions" that term is often applied to large paid expansions. We don't have plans to suddenly introduce a paid expansion for Asheron's Call. We prefer to have free content updates.

That said, we are all psyched to see players running around having fun with the 10th anniversary update and we are already planning our next big celebration update. I can't give you the exact dates, but if everything works out the update might be as soon as late Spring. Stay tuned for future news and tidbits on this upcoming celebration.

----------------------------------------------

Unfortunately, I already knew the answer and immediately cancelled all four of my Asheron's Call 1 accounts. I've been playing AC1 since release and LOVED AC2. The game had so much potential and for them to kill it and NOT continue the AC1 franchise is nonsense and clearly shows that Turbine doesn't give a damn about Asheron's Call. Sure, they have the 10th Anniversary. But, they clearly have no plan to bring new players to the game.

It doesn't matter. I'm "voting" with my wallet. I'm done with Turbine. They USED to be "Powered By Our Fans." They are no longer.

I scream and yell when I play a game, just have to remember to take my heart pills first..

AC1 was insane back in the day and I still long for it at times, AC2 was okay...but not like we were told it would be.

If they took the existing game and overhauled the engine and world , leaving the game mechanics alone, I would love to be involved in that. I certainly would sub a few accounts to it as well.

I still have fond memories of working through the reagents needed to cast a spell, making elemental arrows and watching my first flaming arrow smoke its way through the sky.   /sigh.

MC-Hammer pants later on..lol

edit - found memories just does not sound right..

You know you are old when the dev's on the games you play are almost young enough to be your grand-kids.

If they brought the game back in any form without the technical issues that caused it to fold, I would play in a heartbeat.

There is still a rather big AC2 community out there but we can only dream im affraid:(

I wonder if Turbine would ever just TRY one server...... maybe 3 and just test it out..

open DT

open shadow claim (faction pvp server i think this is the name)

open Harvestgain

If they opened those just for a trial i think they would see a large surge of players playing once again.

Lol you eather have never played AC2 or just as so many ac1 players thought it would be ac1 with better grafhics and you demonize ac2 sind then your just haters/trolls nothing more:(

Actually, I would be inclined to agree with AlienShirt on this one and I played both AC1 and AC2...

AC1 had way more actual content out of the box than AC2 had reason being that AC2 was meant to be  more "organic"given that it was supposed to have started after an apoclypse and the world was in ruins.

Side Note: Definite opportunity areas here as doing this would have made sense if the decisions for where "visible reconstruction" took place was done at each server patch as opposed to how infrequently it was done in game.

AC1 had excellent server stability. AC2 had server issues even after those related to launch.

AC1's classes were more dynamic  than AC2's. This was Turbine's attempt to stamp out the OG builds, instead they created classes that were just ridiculously OP given the right equipment.

Story...AC1 had it, AC2 didn't.

But, neither game was bad judged on it's own merit...If I had to chalk up one reason for why AC2 failed I would directly attribute the failure to Microsoft (or it's game developer face Ken Karl).

Poor, Unlcear, Untrue,  or Unpleasant Communication with players.

MS's billing server, Chat server, Play server were all junk.

MS can be attributed as having forced the launch of the game early as well.

AC1 was a better game by pure virtue of the fact that MS (Ken Karl) messed with it less.

I thought AC2 had some VERY interesting concepts going for it as far as the class abilities and how they could mesh with each other tactically.

I just found it so utterly boring that I couldn't get much past the opening area. I could never quite place my finger on it, but some combination of attributes just made the entirety of the game feel so small and underwhelming, right from the get go. =(
