Almost a year since setting it on the training queue and 1.2 Billion ISK later, Bradford finally has one of the best ships in EVE Online: The Vargur. Too bad he's too afraid to fly the thing.
Mitch is back with his latest MMO ReRoll column, this time tackling the sci-fi MMO, EVE Online.
In many stories, we all play the hero. In MMORPGs, though, that story is told to you - as well as the thousands of other players around you. It can be hard to feel as though your actions matter or truly change the outcome or course of the game world. Has there ever been one of those moments where you clearly felt your actions in the story changed the world for the future?
What do you get when you combine hubris and showing off to your nephew and angry NPCs in EVE Online? Pride cometh before the fall.
With the current EVE Online Invasion happening, Bradford is sucked into the rabbit hole that is New Eden. Has there ever been a game update or in-game event that drew you back into your favorite game?
Join Aaron - also known in New Eden as Jin'Taan - as he recounts his latest escapades in EVE Online - which surprisingly don't include a ton of blowing up player spaceships. This time, NPC ships are in his radar as he checks out what Invasions has to offer.
EVE Online is a game defined by its players, whether they be intrepid explorers or starring in their own Cold War-era spy thriller. One EVE Corp, however, were able to get back at one of those notorious players. This is their story.
EVE Online has a well earned reputation for being a complex game, given all of the systems that make it up, and the ocean of information that’s foisted upon the player. From player built real-time repositories of kills on zKillboard, to the ingame map of the nearly 8,000 individual systems that the game takes place in, it can be easy to get overwhelmed - or simply not know where to begin looking for an answer to your questions.
One of EVE Online’s most unique and heavily advertised features is the fact that everything within it takes place on just one server. Since 2006, however, that hasn’t been entirely true, with the launch of EVE China separating that region of the game off from the rest of the world. This isn’t unusual, with massive games like World of Warcraft and League of Legends also having their own China bound localisations and servers, in order to reach government approval in the region. For EVE Online however, it provided a fascinating mirror of a sandbox, as Tranquility and Serenity developed in parallel.
EVE Online has a long and sordid history with intrigue and spycraft. This includes major, landscape shaking tales such as Judgement Day, which saw one person hand over the main fortress of his coalition to their bitter enemies. But also much smaller tales, like the spy Heavy Interdictor who trapped his own fleet in position just long enough to be bombed during the battle of UALX, leading to nearly 200 of his supposed allies being wiped out in an instant.
In the three or so years I’ve played EVE Online off an on, I’ve really struggled with one core question: Who do I want to be? Within New Eden, Capsuleers can literally be anything they choose: A Diplomat for a large player-run corporation, a spy not unlike those from the Cold War, or even a space trucker who hauls goods along New Eden’s valuable trade routes.
EVE Online has already carved out a reputation for being the catalyst for some of gaming’s most interesting stories. Those stories are driven by the thousands of dedicated players who make EVE’s New Eden home. Whether it’s backstabbing an alliance someone has infiltrated or exploring every system in New Eden, EVE Online players have proven themselves to create some of gaming's most unique stories to date.
EVE Online is never without its drama. Player fueled vendettas, propaganda and sabotage are commonplace. It also never ceases to be driven by the actions of its players. However, sometimes even those actions have to be reined in by CCP, which happened today.
EVE Online is a world of its own - something the developer and players would freely admit. In a game that is so player driven, EVE Online drives unique stories and experiences found literally nowhere else in all of gaming. This extends to the power struggles and political side of New Eden. Part of that is the democratically elected Council of Stellar Management, or CSM. This is a body of players, voted on by players, to represent the people who make up New Eden with CCP Games.
After a week of camaraderie and high spirits, the 13th FanFest of all things EVE Online has finally concluded. By all accounts, it was a week of new songs, new discoveries, and heralded new adventures in the universe of New Eden.
