The only thing swtor has going for it is the story and i dont play mmo's for the story. if i wanted a good story i'd play mass effect or baldurs gate.

It all depends on how you define the 1 - 10 model.  to me,  10 is perfect,  9 is amazing, 8 is great and 7 is good -  7 and above being positive... and my personal opinion is between an 8 and 9 for SWTOR.

SWTOR does have more than just story going for it, but its all a matter of perception.

what exactly does swtor have other than story? the crafting is so simplified its a joke, pvp is awful and end game is just another grind raids to get gear. the story is enjoyable but thats to be expected from bioware.. the rest is very average and no better than most other mmo's on the market.

Personally I like the crafting, and I don't find it simple at all.  Have you ever made a top tier set of gear? Chances are.. NO you haven't even come close to making orange gear and outfitting it all -- and not something thats Bind on P/U either.. which a lot of the purple top tier gear is.

The companion system and conversation system is interesting and enjoyable,  not just being able to outfit your companions, but gaining and losing affection with them through converstion choices is another thing (you can offset bad choices with gifts, but for any meaningful gifts that give high rewards you need to know your companion, and put them together from fragments)

I find PvP to be a lot of fun - too actually - with one of my characters leveling solely through PvP, with my valor currently capped at my characters level.

End game is what you make of it, you can gear grind, or explore, or PvP, or reroll through another story.   Just because you don't think something is good, doesn't mean others won't disagree.

Finally a decent sc-fi game that has raiding and that ME ,SWTOR rpg feel but lets you play with other people. Been a long time waiting for this.

I don't know why most sci-fi mmo's neglect pve and don't use tried and proven raiding systems instead of leaving that space empty or using some other crapy pve mechanic that is not fun or does not work too well. If your going to shun the great pve systems that have aready worked then at least come up with something that tops all the others instead of having boring pve just to be different or whatever.

Also everyone runs into times when they have to solo pve or pvp even when your in a guild/corp/tribe, whether you just need cash for pvp or you have no friends online, so you must not neglect that aspect either. SWTOR does great in this area.

That is why I give SWTOR mmo 9/10. Would be 10/10 if there was a mechanic like Eve's new captureable customs office Planetary Interaction fuction or player owned outposts and moon mining in open world travel style. Then it would be the perfect pvp/pve mmo. There is no point in holding out till we see the perfect pvp/pve game so you might as well give SWTOR a try imo. Beats playing 1 of the thousands of boring fantasy mmo's.

I think reviewers forgot what 8 or 9 out 10 means. Also I love it how most of the comments agree with Danny. Good game? Yes. 9/10? No. That would mean it's near perfect.

I would give SWtOR and Rift a 7.5 and Lotro an 8, but having played Lotro for so long it has less to offer me than it would a new player. We are not media types, they exagerate everything, you have to put that in your CV for a media post I think. :)

I would rate SW:TOR  8 out of 10.

A very good MMORPG that is very friendly to casual and semi-casual gamers who want a game with great Star Wars stories. Star Wars has been a great franchise in gaming for many years now...so that means it is good ground for RPG gaming. I think the best aspect of the game is the stor arcs and full voice acting. Graphics are above WoW in quality, but not pitched too high, so most gamers will be able to play. PvP is a works in progress, it's great knock about fun at the moment, but I think it needs to be structured better for end game players. End game is of course not really there yet, but games at launch tend to cater to the main game and there is a lot of fun to be had leveling up 2 or 3 classes and then waiting and seeing what Bioware have in store for us. As one who beta tested the game I'd write that launch was smoothe for Bioware bar queue times, though that is mainly due to the game being so popular.

Finallly, Danny Wojcicki {mod edit} Sure the game is pitched at Star Wars, but it is pretty accesible for most. {mod edit}

Don't own the game, because I'm doing my research and do not give blindly in to hype.

And what I'm reading about the game so far is not good. At all.

One the one hand you have fanboys who say the game is great and "polished".

And on the other side you have the "haters" who say it sucks BUT also give good reasons and examples WHY it does.

Seeing the MMORPG staff all giving it 8 or higher and using the word polished (except one) means I will never trust any opinion or review here again.

Easy to say, hard to follow up with a combat system that is "flavorful and original". It's all been done before, so how can something be original when our input systems are keyboard/mouse and sometimes joystick/gamepad? Seriously? How many ways can you make a combat system with those tools? FPS vs turn based, tab targetted vs "aimed" (ala skyrim/fallen earth). What would the reviewer DO to make combat "original"?

Griping about something no one can change is a bit silly. Unless, of course, he has the next big idea that NO ONE thought of in 31 years of PC gaming.

Not that it's an uber-awesome game but DCUO at least took MMO control to another place that we haven't seen them. What the (only realistic it seems) reviewer was saying is that this is really same old same old just with a Star Wars wrapper and better than average writing (which is not a high bar to clear even today sadly)

Played: Asheron's Call(still the best fantasy MMO!), EQ1, EQ2, Vanguard, DAoC, Horizons, City of Heroes/Villians, WoW (crap), LOTORO, D&D Online, Eve, Anarchy Online, and still playing SWG daily.

DCUO took it to the level of a console. Great for button smashers, not great for PC gamers who are used to PC gaming being more involved than left left, right right up down A button.

And I still haven't seen an example of an "original" and "non-bland" combat system suggested. No, TERA and GW2 don't count, both have been done before.

I would consider myself a Star Wars fan, not a huge one, but not a small one either. I pretty much grew up with it being one of my favorite settings my whole life. I will have to agree this game is definitely geared towards Star Wars fans and its great for them. The quests being acted out and being given options and dialog does give you quite a bit immersion.

However, if I were to take a perspective of a MMO gamer that's not really a Star Wars fan or really have a good grasp of the Star Wars background/universe, this game will feel very much like the rest. In the back of my mind I do wish they would of tried something at least slightly difference from the traditional sense especially since this isn't a Fantasy setting, its f"cking Star Wars, but they played it safe, imo a little too safe. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the game, but it wouldn't be for its gameplay but more for its background and setting.

There's really no reason for anyone besides Star Wars fans to really get into this game since it really doesn't present anything drastically new or fresh in terms of pure gaming/gameplay sense. Again, great game, but I think Bioware should of tried to be a little more adventurous.

While I am really enjoying the game I can honestly say that the only thing it has over other games is story. If you dont play MMOs for the story then TOR is best left alone... at least until the first expansion.

Personally the story is what makes me want to play.

What SWtOR has done differantly is the strength of a individual story and the voice acting. I don't think its a leap forward, but nothing costs more time and money to develop gaming wise than a MMO. Bearing that in mind SWtOR has been a step forward, there are other directions I would prefer to see MMO's go in, but with so few advances of any kind I welcome any inovation what so ever.

Isn't that a sufficiently obvious hint for concluding that classical rpg story and MMO shouldn't be combined?

From this point of view, TOR is the biggest waste, a huge mistake that's similar to some such building or monument made of Dodo's or some other rare animal fed on caviar's teeth some insane king or dictator in the ancient times might have obliged slaves to make for him.

I hope people will realize the madness too. In my opinion, if TOR had been just a single huge map formed of a flat white surface with a single texture, and one drawn SW background concept art, where players simply bash at each other, it would have been a better game.

Danny Wojcicki here - it's nice to see that I'm not the only one who feels SWTOR fails to impress. Hopefully I'll have more to share on the topic soon.

Danny Wojcicki is the only one which seems to shown any critical abilities which are vital for journalists. The other one's are blind to the fact that the classes are simplistic, the GFX technology is years behind the current tech and the fact that the game is so instanced that it feels more like a single player game than an MMORPG.

I support Danny Wojcicki.

Don't silence the voice of reason and dissent.

The official forums are being moderated heavily.  Game review sites are axing people that speak the truth.  It's obvious this game is an overpriced boondoggle.

What more needs to be said?

And the lead designer's only comments revolve around the fact that the only problem we have is that we aren't convincing ourselves hard enough that this is the game we want to play.

Man I must admit Danny has a good post hell I am very ineterested into this link he posted.

It makes a lot of sense in what the picture meant.

I still don't think this game will fail, and it is true it hasn't fixed what previous mmos lacked other than story.

I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.
