First EA/Mythic made them cancel Imperator AND the DAoC classic server.

Now Bioware has invaded and their influence is already apparent. Remember their big marketing push about their new linear quests with "moral choices"? That's not what DAoC needs.

It just amazes me how what was once the bar none best MMORPG on the market continues to get worse and worse.

I guess thats what happens when all the talent leaves the company and singleplayer game devs take over.

Another victim of EA.

Would of loved to hear what went on in the meeting when the decided DAOC needed quests with "Moral Consequences"....

 

Bioware needs to stay out of MMO's ..... IMO anyway......

It's also not giving you an advantage in ANY way so it's not hurting the other players. But if you've got the time to complain about how much you don't want it,  you really need to find something more constructive to give feedback about like actual gameplay. Or be like one of the few people who said they would be more interested in it at a cheaper price, which can actually change things.

 

The current items won't really affect gameplay sure but it would probably be safe to bet this is only a start and we will see items that do give an edge to gameplay start to be introduced sometime.

(Not that I'd quit either way, but I do see why some people don't like it)

I'm on there right now, so yes Siege is still up and people still play there, it's a small community for sure but there are always people on.

 

If you find yourself on there look up "Unknown" I can help ya out if your starting over ...

INCOMING: WALL OF TEXT

I rated my exp. a 9. But it just became so in the last 6 months. From my first mud till DAOCi I was a pretty hardcore MMORPG player. (If I rated my enjoyment level from the DAOC: ToA release until about 6 months ago I'd say it bounced from 4 to 8 (8 being EQII, EQII was just too small feeling for the world did not feel near as alive as EQ did, but the game play is incredible, and they seem to be fixing the kinda claustrophobic feel it had at launch, I'm sure I will give it a try again.)

Another 8 in that time for me would be AoC, I'd give it an 8 but people seemed to lose interest too fast, which killed the server populations. AoC was awesome when the population was at its peak, I played on a PvP server and with guilds like Murder Herd, Sanguphoria, and tons of little elite pvp squads it was always fun. It had one of the best stealth classes I've played (Ranger). Some of the best times were ranger v ranger both stealthed and tracking each other trying uncover/trap each other.

About 6 months ago I tried EvE for the first time (not counting a couple of trials I did a while back), I always wanted to give EvE a serious try but I'm more into Medieval Fantasy Lore so it kept taking a back seat to other games.

Once I had the chance to devote some serious time to it I was hooked, I love games that don't really force you to PvP but to advance in later levels you are forced to venture into PvP areas for better rewards, I also love full/partial loot type games where you have allot to lose. (And you can lose allot in EvE) And with the way the Skill system is setup I can see myself keeping this one installed and subbed no matter what else I play.

PRO UO SPEECH/Mini Re-Review STARTS HERE:

My real MMO love though is Medieval-Fantasy based so as much as I love EvE I'm still looking for my MMO drug of choice. But what really put my fun level back to a 9 was my return to UO, UO was my first graphical MMO and it was love at second sight (I bought it and returned it once, I got it home and was like wtf I have to pay a monthly sub) But before I returned it I did the little single-player Demo that came with the original release. (Anyone remember that, they had a quest where you found a glass sword that let you one-hit a dragon?) So I only resisted about a week before I bought it again and subbed. I didnt really quit UO because I didnt like it, I followed some friends to DAOC and never looked back.

For years I avoided Origin/EA Server and bounced around Pvt. servers that stuck to the T2A ruleset, I kept hearing how bad the EA/Origin servers were, how dead the servers where and how there was almost no PVP and how gear dependent it had gotten, and how crafted gear wasnt any good anymore so crafting sucked, ect. ect.

I finally decided to see for myself a few months ago, I found both my accounts in-tact minus the houses (stoked!). I found almost none of what I had heard to be true, yes the populations are down but with the global chat it seems more populated than it use too. It is allot more gear dependent but crafted/imbued gear is still some of the best in-game, you even have a chance that some of your crafted items can come out as relics (really high-end gear). Gear is still pretty easy to get so losing it is not a big deal really. Ofcourse there are some ultra rare things that would hurt to lose. I think the item insurance is kinda lame, but I guess does it allow you to actually use some of your really ultra-rare high end stuff instead of leaving it in the bank. (But it's similar to back in the day with weps of vanq, / armor of power, no one would pvp with a Silver Katana of Vanq)

Lots of the additions are really cool, housing is way better, and with the lower populations and added space it's pretty easy to place anything smaller than a castle. The thief profession has been given allot of love. PvP is very much alive and well, Champ spawns in Felucca are allot easier than in non-pvp places and some can be solo'd and Champs spawns are the only place Power scrolls (that raise your skill cap) drop, and power-scrolls are must have to advance your char. Also everyday rewards are just much better in Fel (pvp-zone) more gold/more fame/karma/ better virtue grinding. You almost have to go to Felucca if you want to do well in the UO end-game now. (maybe not have to but you miss out otherwise, even if you don't pvp avoiding PK's is a huge part of UO, and imo it's not as fun without that aspect. Even on my server which is a lower pop server (Baja) Fel is very active).

UO still has its issues for sure, I'm not really sure I like the item insurance although PKing can be lucrative. You can't insure gold/pots/regs/bags of sending/cursed items like power scrolls, (Power scrolls can be worth millions) and allot of times if you roll someone doing a champ spawn they havent had time to insure the items they have picked up, you can even get power scrolls and arties this way.

I keep hearing that The Power Scrolls dropping in Fel only cause some issues with larger pvp guilds having a monopoly on the PS market, I can't see where it is that bad though, while I've yet to finish a Fel Champ spawn and get my own scrolls I have been able to get just about any PS I've wanted, even got 20+ Magery for 8mil. (which is really cheap, 15mil avg on most shards)

Illegal RMT seems to have come back with a vengance from what I can see. And EA has started down the path of Legal RMT, I really don't like the idea of this but so far it has not impacted my game play in anyway that would make me want to quit.

Hacks, I hear allot about them but I have not run into anyone I thought was hacking. I've ran into some really skilled players that are probably accused of hacking. So far as I can tell the people who have handed me my @$$ have done so while following the rules. But everyday there is someone QQing in chat about this person being a hacker. (Always right after they had their face melted ofcourse).

With some of the gear in the game like faster cast, faster cast recovery, life leech/mana leech and super high resist/DCI armor I could see where you would think someone was hacking. But I have not seen any speed hacks/wall hacks, recall/gate hacks, instant heal ect.

Bottom line it's more fun now than it was right after UO:R came out, when Fel became a ghost town. And Fel is still kinda dead, but the dungeons/champs spawns are pvp hot spots on most shards now.

The crafting has only gotten better with time.

Give it another chance. The negatives for UO are kind of over-hyped IMO.

Kizdean Gix from Everquest

 

 Kizdean was memorable for me, because of how long I had to camp him for the dagger, and he was an under-con and had crazy run speed, he was fast even when snared.

I'm planning on returning to DAOC , I had a few questions for those still playing though.

 How viable is the FAQ on this board? Is it still pretty accurate concerning TOA and Catacombs content?

 Can you buy the expansions (I have up to TOA) via Digital Distribution networks? (The FAQ's seemed to talk about buying boxed versions)

 How many servers are there now? How were server transfers handled? I had level 50's spread across servers on different realms. (When we were allowed to make /level 30's on some servers for a short time,  I went and made level 30's of almost every class in the game and leveled a fair amount of them to 50.)

Most of my lv50 toons are just  RR1-3 ML1-3 but I I do have a Hunter and Runemaster on Igraine that are fairly well leveled up, and both had tradeskills I was working on (fletcher 800, tailor was like 500ish)

Think my hunter is ML6 - RR8L? and my RM is ML3 RR4L?

Would it take long for me to get into good fighting shape?

Are sub-classes hard to get/level?

How are the RM and Hunter in PVP now? How are they in PVE-solo and group?

My 2 Cents on STO:

They could of made every race ever known in the ST IP playable with tons of content for each race and it would still suck.

I really want this to be a good game. I'm a fan of NWN 1 and NWN 2, even though Oblivion really kinda screwed up multi-player in NWN 2, it can be mostly fixed with community made add-ons that fix the DM client and Lobby menus, downloading the huge walkmesh files for NWN2 was never an issue for me, even in NWN1 the best servers usually had huge custom hak-paks to download.

I usually try not to worry about what company is doing the dev for a game but the first thought in my head when I read Cryptic was making this was, FAIL.

The internet used to be pay by the minute in the early AOL/Prodigy/CompuServer days and the first ISPs. Then the companies made a deal of paying per month for your internet, guess which style people in America do more of? It's the subscritpion model.

 

Phones for a long long time were pay by the minute, land lines and cell phones now do monthly subs and a lot of those options are unlimited calling. More people now use subscription with phones for either x number of minutes contract or unlimited.

 

People have subscription for TV, some for radio, more for consoles (Xbox Live Gold etc.).

 

Subscriptions has become the model we work well with as a society. So when people start trying to take that away and change it to a "keep buying more crap for the game you play and end up paying more then you would have with just a subscription" model, plenty of us don't like it. And yes we also don't like playing a game where a person can ridiculously throw hundreds of dollars at it in a month and get an advantage. It's not some deep, tough to understand, psychological reasoning why people are against the model. It's actually plain and simple.

Guess I have no morals when it comes to who I buy games from. If the owner of "Evil Games Corp X" released 10 years worth of crap games, bought all the games I currently like and turned them into crap, then went to my Grandma's house and stole the last of her food stamps, and the next day released a game I thought I might like, I'd buy it. 

I'd buy games from Al-Qaeda if I thought they might be any good.

How do focus fired, naked gank squads equate into your list there? If someone manages to kill one of our toons they won't get anything since they will all be naked, unless they happen to get the one carrying your loot on our way back to the bank.

First you supposedly can't cast without a staff, and second the quality/stats of the staff will probably affect your dps.

Also Ive read you will need reagents to cast spells.

And from everything we have read on the game friendly fire will be implemented, which would probably make multi-boxing tough. Gonna be tough with FPS combat anyway. Doubt your going to be able to have a healer that has macros with /cast heal @ target

I am a skeptic, I don't assume that I'm going to jump in and love this game and that everything that I think is in the game will be there. The difference is that I don't feel the need to act superior, as if I know everything and that anyone that doesn't agree with me is stupid.

Your whole post basically breaks down to: "I'm superior because I don't try to act superior."

1. Exploits - Dying to players who exploit in other games is annoying.. dying to exploiters and losing all your stuff will make you completely stop playing until the exploit is fixed. How fast do 'exploits' spread? Once someone learns it, they will pass it onto their guild and friends. How fast do most games take to fix an exploit? A few weeks to acknowledge it, another 2 weeks to fix it? UO had a bunch of real exploits (spamming chat to get people to lag) and they also had 'tricks'. Just like in UO.. players will learn how to get you to go rogue/grey so they can get you killed. Honest players will just stop playing, everyone else will learn to use the exploit.

Exploits sucked, but it was rare for the average player to be affected by them post T2A. (Before that, they seemed to be allot more common but still not as bad as allot people make them out to be)

Lagging the chat buffer was not around long at all btw, just over hyped because exploits that affected PVP directly like that were rare (and a major PITA). Like the clothes exploit when (Pre-T2A) that allowed you to pretty much become invulnerable.

Duping exploits, skill gain exploits, mob killing exploits were the majority of the things you seen. IMO they were way worse because of their effect on the economy of the game. And some of the housing exploits were probably the worst. IMO they were because I one of my houses repeatedly broken into. (My first house was placed on a funky spot near Brit X-roads and allowed you to get into it on a mount if you tried hard enough)

Most MMO's now have way fewer exploits and bugs than games like UO .

I do worry about DF having less resources without a major publisher and because of that taking longer to find/fix problems.

I was never tricked into going gray (Although I accidently did it to myself quite a few times, even called the guards on myself )

2. Lag/Crashes - Same as above. If you have lag spikes at all, will you really play that day? In other games, death isn't that big of a deal, so you don't mind getting killed a few extra times because your connection is bad.

I agree with this, for me this was the biggest problem but it did not keep me from playing pretty much everyday. (And playing everyday did not keep me from whining and moaning about the lag/crashes )

But we have no idea how DF will run, UO had an excuse to run like crap DF doesnt, they have a clear model to follow.

And the fact that they deleted your accounts after 3 months of being de-activated. (Not like it is an easy thing to jump back in that game and start over after you had lost a bunch 7x GM chars because you left for a few months, it's probably one of the things that kept me paying for my accounts long after I was ready to quit, but then after I finally did quit, a year later I found myself wanting to play again) Not sure if this is even true anymore they may keep your accounts indefinitely now.

3. Brit graveyard - To those that didn't play UO, I'll explain this :) Brit graveyard was typically the first area where new players would 'wander' outside of town. It was right outside of the biggest town, and it had easy monsters to kill. Because of this, it was often the place where Murderers hung out. In UO, new players were often essentially trapped in town. Yes, if you knew people before you started playing, they could help you.. but you basically had to know them BEFORE you started playing. Someone who just bought the box, logged in and started playing, probably spent their first month rarely getting out of town. This is the exact reason UO introduced Trammel. Players weren't renewing after their free month, and they were citing 'ganking' as the reason. The same thing will happen in Darkfall. Anti-social players will camp the area where new players first step into the 'world' and gank them.

Ganking was a problem for new players, but they did add the "Young" player status for new players, that kept more experienced players from attacking you. There was more to having "Young" status than just not being able to be attacked by other players but that was the basic idea.

Loot/Gear was pretty easy to come by in UO so losing it was not always a big deal. Of course you had to be extra careful with your rare/ magic items and gold, gold weighed you down so you could only carry so much of it anyway.

Ganking was not near as big of a problem as people make it out to be now, it was a pain in the ass to be red you suffered 20% skill loss on death could only go to one bank and it was not in a safe area.

20% skill loss pre-trammel was freaking nasty. You lose 10 points to something like magery, magic resist or parry you had grinded up GM and you were hating life.

I never ganked/pk'd allot, I had a char I messed around with but ended up getting killed and suffering skill loss a few times and got tired of grinding his skills (Tank-Mage) back up.

Red players heads could be worth allot of cash to so people always hunted them.

Mark/Recall made it hard for PK's to even catch their victims, if you were farming cash items some where you were on the lookout already, if they ran into your area you could see their name on the edge of the screen before they got there, if they recalled in it took a sec for them to get their bearings.

4. Don't come late to the party - This kind of goes with #3. But basically what happens is if you are a month or two late starting the game, you will be getting ganked all the time by players that are more powerful than you and they will block your progress. The first players who got through 'brit graveyard' were free to advance their skills pretty freely, but anyone who started late, always had more powerful characters waiting for them. This was the reason that some players 'loved' old UO.. because they were out there early. I was lucky when I played UO, i started at launch. But I had enough friends who started late and I 'experienced' what they did. New players won't renew

I started just before T2A came out and played for over 5 years and even bought a second account, I played mainly on Baja, but also played on Atlantic and Siege Perilous some too. This happened some I'm sure but you make it sound like after a year UO only had a few hundred people playing. When I played there was always more people coming in and staying than there was leaving. There were certainly periods when less new players were coming in, and times when huge groups left but for the most the numbers were always increasing.

But your right to some extent DF is definitely not going to be for everyone, and DF has a hell of allot more competition.

5. Class/skill balance - Class balance is extremely hard to do. Class balance in PvP is almost impossible. How much fun is it going to be to play if you aren't the OP class? If because of skill/class balance you are losing your gear all the time. In every game, players cry about class balance.. in a game where it means you lose your gear..they will do more than cry, they will quit, or they will reroll to the OP class.

Class balance is always an issue in any MMO with large scale PVP, probably always will be. And there will always be FOTM I suppose.

6. Bring your friends - full-loss death means that players will group up and wander in bands. This sounds cool in theory, but what happens if you log in and you don't have many friends on? And again, what about new players?

I solo'd plenty in UO, I had a class (bard/mage) built just for soloing and farming, in fact UO was probably too solo friendly from a PVE stand-point. You just learn when not to fight.

 

The pre-trammel game play didnt hurt UO it was just that the game engine started showing it's age. The game was 5+ years old when trammel was released, and housing space had allot to do with opening trammel.

Pre-Trammel UO is still my all time fav MMO (I Don't hate post trammel UO, I really like some of the changes, but I enjoyed the game more I think pre-trammel)

DF is not going to be for everyone, the DEV's have to realize the majority has spoken and more people want games like WoW and WAR than UO and DF. But hopefully they did some research and found there was enough players that would like a game like this to make it worth doing.
