Out of the mmos I've tried and reached high levels with, there was really only one with a definite "bad guy" side. That was Everquest 2. In WoW, when I started it was before they got everyone into the instanced pvp bowls, and even before the honor system, so if you can remember the first WoW cinematic it talks of an unstable truce and while it shows both sides fighting, it states that they're trying to hold onto that truce. 

EQ 2 is the only game I know of in current gen mmos that has a definitive bad side, and that side used to start in a town called Freeport. EQ2 is also the only game with hard incentives to play as the bad guy: specifically certain races and classes can only be evil. In all the other mmos, the bad boys and girls get different tools than the good boys and girls, but it's not a huge difference maker from what I've seen, unless those mmos have changed.

In WoW's case, the best racial in the game goes to humans, which is a +rep bonus racial trait. When any new expansion comes along, this is easily the most valued racial, because the sooner you get that rep, the sooner you get those rep rewards. Even this has been marginalized with the new guild leveling system, providing a rep bonus to guilds that get to a fairly early level in the system.

 

I think what it boils down to is that  cosmetics generally portray the darker side as the more creative side. Even in EQ 2, if you want an ogre or troll, you have to roll an evil character. You can always switch factions and betray your city later, but at least in the beginning you really are "evil" in that game. In WoW, goblins and tauren, two of my favorite races from WoW lore, are Horde-only, at least player controlled-wise. In Aion, the asmos have tails and a mysterious tone to them that the elyos do not have. 

 

Individual reasons may vary, and I honestly think the real reason for the question the OP asks is due to cosmetics and the "evil" factions looking cooler and in some cases having better animations.

I get what you're saying, it's just that the genre hasn't really evolved much the past 6 years. It's like it evolved really fast from the late 90's to about 2004-2005, and then the battle between WoW and EQ 2 was won by WoW.

I think people also forget that at one point in time Lineage 2 had 14+ million worldwide subs. No, it certainly doesn't have that anymore, but at one point it did. That is greater than the 12.5 million WoW is currently clocked at by an additional 1.5 million+ people. That's not just a handful of gamers.

Really, it doesn't matter what terms people use, it's the fact that most people don't know how to express the idea they're trying to convey, so they use popular terminology. It's really nothing new. In the 60's and 70's the word of choice was "Groovy". In the 80's and 90's in California it was "rad". In 2010 and beyond the word of choice among gamers is "clone".

What you have is 3 separate generations of gamers, with the oldest gamers having been around long enough to have seen games go from text-based all the way to 3D, or with no 3D vision, a good simulation of it. Graphics have upgraded steadily and fast over the years until recently, when AMD and Nvidia decided to milk people and release half-assed upgrade cards for double the money.  Anyway the point is, between 3 generations of gamers, you're going to find that a lot of us have seen a game before, maybe in different parts across other games, yes, but we've SEEN that game before.

The evolution you're talking about hasn't happened yet. Age of Conan nobly tried a new action-based combat system and was supposed to be the first mmo with DX10 (I think, I think lotro's implementation came later) but fell flat.

The evolution you're looking for won't happen until something threatens WoW and gets recognized; Lineage 2, as I said, at one point had more active subs than WoW by a large margin, but never received the acclaim in the West because it's considered an "Asian grinder". Really,  mmo games of various types have and do challenge WoW. Just because you don't hear about it in our little sheltered coutry of the US (If you live here) doesn't mean there aren't other games out there with over 10 million subs.

And no, just because a game is f2p doesn't mean you can count it out. F2P is a subgenre of the main genre you're all discussing, and a game used to be based on how many people play it, not by how much money it makes. In my opinion the successful game is the one with more players, and there are and have been games with more players than WoW.

 

Anyway, the whole point of this, is that we're on the internet and very unlikely to change anyone's opinion. The text-based verbal masturbation is all great, but it gets us nowhere because in the past 20 years people have suddenly forgotten how to listen to each other.

No  offense, but if you're going to post an article on a professional gaming website, you should really know the difference between your and you're. The poo jokes were pretty funny, though.

What Blizzard brought to the forefront may have been done in other games, but WoW was the first game I experienced these in. They are:

1) Lax death penalty

2) Heavily instanced dungeons and raids, though in vanilla there were openworld areas with mobs that dropped epic loot, and world raid bosses that dropped loot equivalent to an instanced endboss of a raid

3)Flawless transition of zone to zone (Okay, I did see this in Lineage 2, but WoW was a much larger game world at launch separated only by the two continents - that and loading dungeons were the only loading screens I remember seeing when I started playing, outside of the initial loading the game up)

4) The ! over the head of quest givers - I never saw it in any mmo I'd played before WoW, but I can't say they introduced it with any certainty

These are the only features I know of that WoW may have innovated. Everything else, from what I understand, was existent in other mmo's and games prior to it.

I just got http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254044 yesterday, and so far I have not been disappointed. I am, however, disappointed with the Samsung 216BW it replaced. That thing only lasted 2 1/2 years before it had to be replaced. If you look at the Hanns G I linked, it's almost $100 cheaper and also bigger than the monitor you're currently looking at.

Wait... so you don't like the fact that blizz reworked the vast majority of the current world? The game is 6 years old... it needed a facelift. I'm neither pro nor anti WoW, but this took balls, and blizz showed they have the tenacity to stick with their plan.

More people seem to like the changes than the people who are content with the same content for the past 6 years. Not sure about you, but new content > old content imo.

First of all, Blizzard will never make a sandbox mmo as popular as WoW. WoW is a social phenomenon.

Given that, if they did somehow manage it, yes people would still complain. Some people will complain about anything just to see their own words on the internet or hear their own voice.

Do single females actually play MMOs? And no, I'm not talking about the guys that roleplay female characters to get free loots.

Even if a chick is single, is actually a chick, and plays mmos, she's not going to tell you she's single.

You really shouldn't be looking for love in an mmo, the genre tends to attract people of both genders that are either very young, very immature, or very unstable. Some games have a more stable audience than others, but generally speaking people willing to spend the kind of time needed in an mmo to "succeed" are either involved with another mmo gamer or not worth your time.

Even though you're using an admin account, you may still have to right-click the lotro icon and set it to always run as administrator under properties>compatibility.

WoW is an anomaly in the MMO market, it's like a lightning striking twice at the exact same spot. It was pure change that when it came out it gathered such a huge playerbase. I mean look, only very few MMO's get over one million subs, or even half of that, but WoW already has over 10 million subscribers and surely it will grow when the next expansion comes out. That amount of players... it's just not normal. Don't get me wrong, all glory to the Blizzard. They are smart and big enought to keep the momentum of their game up and keep polishing it constantly, but like I said, it's almost purely by change that the game is as huge as it is.

 

Blizzard's name surely had something to do with the success (and the fact that when it was released it was propably THE most easily accessible and user friendly MMO in the market, for more hc players ofc) but if the launch had been, say, few years later I don't think it would be have so dominant place in the market. I think there simply wouldn't be any 10+ million subscriber MMO's in that case. When Blizzard's next MMO comes out I'm pretty sure it won't gather nearly as big following as WoW did. Several million subs, perhaps, but absolutely NOT anything in the league of WoW. I won't say nothing ever willl come to close to it, but propabilities are it won't happen anytime soon.

 

PS. Just for the record I currently play WoW and have been playing since it was released.

The biggest issue with modern mmos being released is that they generally are in such an unfinished state they can barely be called alpha versions.

The second biggest issue is the fact that they all rip each other off. Blizzard managed to rip off the 1st gen mmos in a such a way that it appeared to many, many first time mmo'ers as though WoW were the original and best. Since then, we've seen other mmos copying WoW's approach in one form or another, and it is generally met with disaster or at the least, much lower than projected sub retention.

Between these two issues most of the modern mmos released since 2004 have not been able to gain a substantial grasp on the western market. At one point in time Lineage 2 had 14 million worldwide subscribers; WoW just reached 12 million. There have been bigger games than WoW, which often gets overlooked by both gamers and publishers alike.

Until we see a new mmo from Blizzard I fear we will be stuck in this endless cycle of repetition and corporate theft. The only mmo I've even played that was nothing like WoW out of current gen p2p mmos was released in an alpha state, based on my experiences in beta and the fact that the dev/pub (same company) did hardly any changes to the game during beta. So it seems we're either doomed to an incomplete pile of buggy code, a cheap knockoff of a polished knockoff of a first gen mmo, or both.

Other than companies imposing limitations to questing, etc, nothing new has been brought to the table for quite some time. Even Aion's flying idea was roughly taken from a f2p, Flyff. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people buy games based on graphics, so the marketing department shows off some trailers and some hawt ingame footage, and a new mmo sells at least 500k box copies, which is usually close to enough to churn a profit. It doesn't cost as much as they claim to make mmos.

In other words, I see a lot of people gripe about the mmos that come out and have come out the past several years, but yet when the new mmo launches those same people are usually first in line with a fistful of cash, ready to invest in the "next big thing that will kill WoW".

In my opinion, no it is not. Channels on B.Net are limited to 100 people before you automatically join a new channel. If you want to say it is an mmo, then you have to say every single player shooter with an online component is an mmo as well.

 

There is no "massive" about these types of games. The lobby is limited, and you can only have a set number of people in the game itself.  Of course, you may disagree, and you're entitled to your opinion. It is only my opinion D2 is not an mmo and never will be.

Nowadays it seems most games are made for a younger crowd, but what I was getting at before is that it wasn't always that way.

 

Granted, I played Police Quest, Space Quest, LeisureSuit Larry, etc when I was a teen but I had a very good grasp on spelling which helped.

I agree with most all of this. But the game in question is WOW. Rated T for Teen as most MMO's are. AOC may be M, cant remember for sure. But over and over we see posts about how the game is so easy. One guy said anybody 18+ laughs at the game. My point is that the game is made so that teens can play it. The 4 year old playing is a load of crap and we all know it, even the "adults"  that would like to believe it.

No worries, I just get a little defensive when I see people post things I have a habit of misunderstanding. I thought you meant gaming in general was for kids. No harm, no foul, though, right?

 

Yes WoW is rated T as are most mmos. You are absolutely right, and thanks for clarifying.

Actually, all M rated games are supposed to be for adults. Yes, I know, they're not usually, but they're supposed to be. Okay, okay, "17 and up" - but still, 17 is legally an adult in quite a few countries outside of the US.

 

Also, there are quite a few adult-only video games out there, and they've been created since gaming became a viable way to make money. Just because they're not available in the States doesn't mean they don't exist. And no, I'm not talking about those creepy Japanese games, either.

 

PC gaming in the 80's revolved around adults or at least people with a mature enough skillset to be able to think for themselves and problem-solve. Just play any of the old Sierra adventure games where you had to type every action out, in some cases within a few seconds of entering a scene in the game. Games became more and more targeted towards the younger audience (speaking of pc games here) not because games are "kid's toys" but because the under 18 audience tends to represent a large amount of disposable income.

ALSO: PC's became much more prevalent in the 90's, whereas in the 80's not nearly as many people had access to one, let alone the internet.

This doesn't change the fact that I'm actually agreeing with you, I just had to point out the pc gaming in the 80's and 90's was less about the kiddie and casual crowd and more about people who wanted to challenge their brains. The fact that there was no ratings system in place until the 90's does not change the fact that there have always been adult gamers ;)

Also as a side note - I've been called "hardcore" by friends in the past, but I've never played a "complex challenging MMO" - they just don't exist. They can be tedious, they can be fun, but in the end they're mostly the same and boil down to lvl grind, quest grind, item grind, or skill grind.

Blizzard, last I heard, are actually developing 2 mmos. One is a new IP, the other nothing is known about yet. The first one (new IP) is slated to come out in '12 at the earliest.
