Originally posted by Madatan No, it is billed as an MMORPG. By your definition I think you would lump every game with a significant online component as an MMO, which is just absurd. Apart from resource files is there anything stored on your computer or is it all stored on a server? On a server, like a typical mmo. Is there a subscription fee? Yes, like a traditional MMO Do you advance your levels, get new skills, new gear, all in an environment with thousands of other players with whom you can group and do quests etc etc etc? Yes, again, like a traditional mmo. What is there about this game that is not the same as any other mmo that is out there? Apart from DC Universe? Nothing, it is an mmo with a different combat model. Now, is DCUO a game with a future etc? Dunno, not a game that I enjoy and one that I would never pay a sub fee for. It is, for me, a subpar game filled with the lowest common denominator of mmo gaming. The graphics are pretty, there is no getting around that, the animations are fluid, the game runs damn sweet on my system. And there is something about the flight animations that really really is better than that in other super hero mmos. Character customization is good although it seems to me that the powers are a little off and very limiting. That, for me, is the extent of the good. Gameplay, questing, the meat and bones of mmos is where the game falls off for me. Plays like a cool console game that you might want to dink around in for a little bit, but there are far better super hero action games for varying systems that do not require a subscription fee to play. |

The Old Republic: "No Auto Attack"
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 1/10/11 10:44:31 AM
Auto attack in most games does minimal to no damage, look at Lotro for example. Doubt most toons can kill a mob 7 levels beneath them using nothing but white damage. Whether there is or will or won't be auto attacks in TOR is irrelevent if the game is balanced properly so that players are able to move at a consistent rate and if the combat is engaging and entertaining. We should know soon enough at least :) |

It's the little things where you can tell if a company actually gives a **** about their customers, or if the only they care about is a quick buck. When I went to uninstall the beta immediately pops up and tells me its going to remove c:/windows/system32 What the ****? lol. Luckily I am not the average person and was quite easily able to remove it and all offensive traces of their malware. This is not an uncommon occurance with SOE products, even in retail. |

DC Universe Online: Does It Live Up to the IP
News Discussion « General Discussion 1/08/11 9:57:26 PM
I think it all depends on what really makes the DC Universe special to each fan. Every fan is different, some do not recognize different changes, some give more prevalence to one timeline over another etc etc etc. DCUo I am sure will make some fans happy, some for a long time, some for just long enough to go wtf?! lol. As with all games, especially where IPs are concerned, what one fan likes another will hate. For myself, DCUo was fun, for about 20 minutes. I saw pretty much everything I wanted to see, and it was more than enough to see that the game is not for me. Has little to do with the "universe" has everythign to do with the arcade-y gameplay. The greatest setting in the world means jack squat if the gameplay and story aren't up to par and that is the case here, in my opinion. |

PS3 to outsell Xbox 360 by 2012 - Analyst
General Gaming « General Discussion 1/05/11 4:11:24 PM
Originally posted by SaintViktor This is not the first time that analysts and soe have stated that the ps3 would overtake this that or the other thing. Nothing yet has come of it and the ONLY reason why the PS3 may see an uptick in sales is not because of the quality of the software (Lord knows the idea of exclusivity is counterproductive to game studios endeavoring in an hostile economic environment to generate profits and revenues that will allow them to continue development) it is solely because of the possible jailbreak. If it is that easy to be hacked and if they have actually succeeded where people for years have failed then everyone will rush out to buy one because then they will never have to buy a game that they do not want. Which, while giving Sony initial sales of the consoles and accessories will eventually hurt their bottom line. One of the reasons is that each game sold gives royalties to the console manufacturer's (something which does not happen on the PC by the way hehe). In order to make a game for any of the consoles you have to pay the manufacturer for the privelege. Now, if your platform has lost all security and the numbers of games being sold decreases by a significant margin then no developer in the right mind would pay to develop for it. So, the era of exclusivity could come back, very much in favor of Microsoft and the 360. At least until the next series of consoles is prepped for release, and while they said they weren't going to for several more years something like the jailbreak could be incentive enough for Sony to push the PS4 years ahead of schedule. |

Interested in this game...but how shallow is it?
General Discussion « DC Universe 1/03/11 1:33:59 AM
Originally posted by 4Renziks Well the third one they definitely have. The first one I think it might be dependent upon the power set you use? Understand that this game's depth will be limited as it is designed from the get go for the ps3. While it worked for Final Fantasy for some folks, didn't really fair too well with others. As to number 2, I cannot say for sure, but it doesn't seem like it would. From my limited experience (maybe 30 or so hours) outside of the instances everything just seems to be a bit chaotic and kind of a psuedo pq in that if you hit something or are standing close enough to something you get credit. Dunno bout endgame. :) Understand that everything in these games, all games for that matter, is a matter of personal opinion, taste, etc etc. Can't hurt, except to give smedley and cao money lol, to give it a try when it rolls around. |

Would you consider playing a first person MMORPG [poll]
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 1/02/11 5:21:43 PM
Nope, don't like the tunnel vision of fps games in the first place. Secondly while Bethesda is stuck on it like stink on dung the first person perspective makes melee combat look absolutely horrible. You want to see where Bethesda got their engine ideas? Google Hexen. If all mmo's decided to come out with the first person perspective I would never play an mmo again. |

Vindictus.. Is this where we want the future of mmo's to be headed?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 1/02/11 12:55:23 AM
Eventually all game genre's will be turned into mmo's so expect to see more action mmo's, afterall they are simpler to develop and produce. Just as rpgs took a hit because of the change that Diablo brought to the genre, traditional mmo's may experience the same. It all depends on the consumer dollar. If it attracts more attention than the traditional mmo's coming out then expect to see more of it. |

THe CU and NGE in Star Wars Galaxies question??
SWG Veteran Refuge « Star Wars Galaxies 12/31/10 11:51:03 AM
Originally posted by maxeborn People cheated to get jedi quickly? Seriously? Where did you get this tidbit of new wisdom from? First SOE never admitted the NGE was a mistake. Specifically Cris Cao stated that the players are too stupid to know what they want and that he would tell them what they wanted. Secondly, John Smedley stated that the way they implemented the NGE was where they made the mistake. Much like how certain politicians say that it is not the legislation that they have introduced that is flawed, but how they communicated said legislation. Finally, Smedley had said something to the effect that the original code was destroyed. Now, anyone that has ever programmed professionally knows for a fact that this is either: A) Evidence of how shoddy things are at SOE as they do not even keep revision backups both on site and off site. Or, B) That what Cao stated is how SOE feels about gamers in general so they lied through their teeth knowing y'all are too dumb to know any better. And seeing the hype for DCUO, Smed and Cao are probably right :P |

Why don't more people play Age of Conan ?
General Discussion « Age of Conan 12/31/10 11:41:35 AM
The main reason I stopped playing is because the game stopped being entertaining for me. The setting, while based on one that I enjoy reading about, falls far short of Howard's own universe. It is just missing that something that Howard's books had, and as a result the setting wasn't enough to pull me in. Followed with a game system that I didn't enjoy once past the novelty of it, ahd they stuck with the original design for combat it might've been something cool, but as it stands their design boiled down to taking that which has worked for years and added a nonsensical layer which detracted from my own personal enjoyment of the game as a whole. |

It will be the best game on the market when released
General Discussion « Rift 12/29/10 8:31:40 PM
Dinking around in it.... not sure what's so great. Not too far into it but feels much like most other mmo's out there. Not sure what it is about the way that the game feels, it feels like what would happen if Lineage 2/Aion and WAR had a kid. Not to bash the game.... Lineage 2 I played for a bit after leaving SWG for the first time lol. Just not sure if its my cup of tea yet. Some will like it, some will hate it. Some, like myself, will be pretty indifferent to the whole thing. :) |

General: Uphill! In the Snow! Both Ways!
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/19/10 12:43:31 PM
"If you don’t like it, don’t play the damn thing." You know what your easy mode has provided? A game that plays itself. A game where you can run an entire guild worth of characters, and have no more than one or two actual human beings in said guild. A community of narcissistic, entitlement babies that not only expect, but demand, to have everything handed to them on a silver platter because they or their parents pay for their subscription. A game where the core players, only rarely even need to associate with other players as they are quite competent in soloing all of the group content in the game, short of raids. Which in fact, this soloing, is the only way many players can find even the smallest semblance of challenge. A game that is filled with players, incompetent with their selected roles, until someone puts up a you-tube video. At which point they become the second coming of Napoleon or Hitler as they dictate exactly what everyone is supposed to do according to the you tube video. "Wait, tank! Two steps to the left is where you start." And as to the quote of yours I provided. Your kind infest the forums of every game demanding that each new game be easier than the last. You throw tantrums, you throw ultimatums, you threaten, you complain, you report anyone who disagrees with you as being combative. You want to play your mmos from your phones, from your cars, from your effing facebook profile, any way possible but actually sitting down and playing the gd game. When you have succeeded, and turned every game into an extension of your overblown sense of ego. When you sit there and go, ho hum, this is getting boring now, be prepared for Nelson's "ha ha". And as to yours and others problems with wow now. Don't worry. Regardless of whether or not the youtube how-to vids come out, Blizzard will dumb it all down. Within 3 months it will be WOTLK all over again where folks are soloing heroics. I know I was soloing em with my bear tank a few months ago before I deleted and cancelled all of my toons. "The healers I know keep blinking in surprise and saying that they can no longer heal an instance while half-asleep; surely this is a good thing? The tanks I know are having to pay more attention too, and the DPS classes apparently have more to do than just figure out when to pew-pew and at what." Congratulations, you have apparently not been playing very long, have you? Let's see, when world of warcrap first came out and they actually fixed the bugs in MC, they let it sit that way for a bit. Then they introduced Black WIng Lair. Guess what they did? They dumbed MC WAY down because the mouthbreathers weren't keeping up with the core. When the next dungeons came, they dumbed down the previous ones. IF you knew your ass from a hole in the ground you would know this. But then again, like most everything in this article, if you, the "author" and I use the term loosely, actually knew what hte hell you were talking about, if you knew anything apart from your own personal narrow opinions based on nothing factual, then you would have saved yourself and all of us the time that has been wasted here. Making the game run better is always a good thing. There is, however a huge difference between making a functional game and making a simplistic game and while you touch upon it, you come to faulty and unsubstantiated conclusions, which I should not be surprised by, it is your kind that sit there come up with your conclusions, then do your experiments, and only select the results that support your ignorant, narcissistic conclusions. Of course, if you actually tried to approach your trash of an article with some semblance of intelligence rather than with the attitude of "we won, accept it or fuck off" then you wouldn't have an article. |

Real time training = worse than cash shop?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 11/26/10 7:37:05 PM
Originally posted by santimiar It is always a matter of perception. From where I sit, EVE and I believe Age of Conan is trying something like this, it is no different than buying a character. At least in traditional games, grind or no, when you earn a level you actually had to do something other than set a tick mark and log out. From when I played Eve, the amount of time you put in game meant absolutely nothing apart from the amount of isk you could earn. This is why I do not play Eve and why there is no chance in hell that I would pay to play any game that was like eve. You should have to actually do something in order to level, something far more than just telling the idiot game where it should train you. Why not just contact one of hte chinese farmer companies, at least that way you can put a poor chinese child to school? |

The funny thing is, back when doom, hexen and the like were released many were bemoaning how games were getting over simplified all in the name of graphics. It was in the MMO space that, a few years later, some of us figured that we would get all the complexity of the classics. Just sad at how the low point in gaming for some of us several years ago is used today as a high water mark. Pretty soon, I guess, all we will get to play are farmville and mafia wars :( |
