Having a compass instead would be nice. It worked out very well with an Elder Scrolls games...

Hope to see you in Landmark as well.  Please don't pay attention to all the negativity from some of our cynical friends.  There are still plenty of us here that like the new direction of the game and will play it whole-heatedly.

Thats not sandbox. thats not even semi sandbox. The term refers to being able to do whatever you want. To be creative and build (or not) and play the way you want to play. When we, the refugees of mmos from another time, hear the word sandbox, it means something very specific to us. Its become a sick joke from developers to use the word knowing full well they are pulling our coat tails and really only giving us a tiny piece of the pie. They are "using" the word to build hype, and this is pretty much the last straw for me. Im about one more disappointment away from starting a kickstarter fund to build the game that probably around 500,000 of us want to play. The rest of you can have this.

 

First i'd like to thank everyone for replies

Anyway... being someone that have played Ultima Online a lot, I know what a sandbox game is. Of course, there IS reason why i called this one semi-sandbox and not a "sandbox" like SOE would like to call it. Because it seems that EQN will have some of sandbox elements into it, by doing away with levels, making crafting more complex, ability to explore whichever part of map you desire if you can get your head out alive that is, making whatever crossover with Landmark (house\farm\castle\whatever building).

Anyway, sandbox MMOs being largely centered around a PvP, im eager to see how will this fit in PvE-based world (hence the reason i called it 'semi-sandbox')

P.S. If you are looking for the "true sandbox" MMO project at Kickstarter, i warmly suggest to look at Pathfinder Online. But thats for another topic ;)

P.P.S. That Rallying Call thing is so confusing to me still. I guess i will have to wait and see how it turns out to be, just like i said.

Hello everyone

Ive been pretty excited when i saw the SOE Live show. Right after it, i googled a bunch of things and lurked trough these and couple of other forums for a while. Here are just my couple of thoughts.

 

Let me begin with cosmetic design. I am actually fine with it. It reminds me a bit more on EQII rather than EQ, but it is fine. Still, those overextended emotes and expressions may not be everyones cup of tea, but that is for here to stay. And, lets face it, photorealism wouldnt be the EQs design way. No matter how much you saw EQ or EQII as a Skyrim\Oblivion\Farcry 3 lookalike, they were never actually like that. Yes, those two were a little bit serious than this one, but they still had some cartoon\fairy tale flavor to it.

Second, i like that they took a semi-sandbox approach by removing levels and taking a more exploration\horizontal progress design. I love idea that you would be able to actually find all the classes, eventhough i will definatelly use different characters for different archetypes, purely for roleplaying sake. My only worry is how will raiders/endgamers (which seems to be majority of MMORPG players) react to non-raiding endgame approach (i actually expect a lot of rage because people will expect themepark\verticall progression MMO and they will be dissapointed).

I also like a destructible environmets and multileveled (minecraft-like) map. However, i'd like to see how much should we be able to bring our own content from Landmark into the world of Norrath. I'd like to have my own house in-game and being able to upgrade it and defend it from bad guys and\or deuchebag players :D

As for combat, i am perfectly fine with it. Really, i dont mind it. Hell i even played Oblivion, Diablo and many more games with pure and simple left and right click combat and i was ok. Actually, i never even liked those UI's in MMORPG where you could see only like 20% of your screen, due to UI with 20000 buttons. Anyway, there is one thing i am concerned about. They talked so much about that "advanced A.I.", but there is also one thing that even GW2 suffered from and even that A.I. might not fix that. I dont want the mass of players being able to zerg everything. I am yet to see how will it work against the zerg of players. EQ, for instance, had a plenty of hard open world bosses, which even required a 50+ players to participate. I desperatelly hope that EQN will be like that, with all this multileveled world approach.

All things being said, there is one thing that nothing has been talked about and i am also eager to see. What kind of PvP approach will they have. I hope desperatelly for an open world PvP, even if its faction-based. Especially if they said there will be those rallying calls and player able to help bad guys. Even if this dont happen, there can be tons of options used with this buildable/destructible world and two factions that existed in previous games, for world PvP.

 

Bottom line: i know that this game is not everyone's cup of tea, especially for those people that expected EQ with "shader model 3" graphics.  I wont even lie, when i said that i even expected dramatic changes to the game in comparison with earlier games when i saw EQ Next title (if they wanted the third part of the same game, they would name it simply "Everquest III" and have done with it). I waited long enough for another sandbox (even if partially) game, which doesnt have a space ships. I hope they deliver at least 50% of those promised things.

As for the rest of you, I can say only one. At least, give the game a chance. It will gonna be f2p anyway, meaning it wont cost you nothing to try it out. You can read a thousand of biased or one-sided reviews which praise or throw hate at the game. At the end of the day, you are the one who need to bring up the conclusion about it. Heck, for one time, try to bite "Pixar design" or "5 button combat", you might get pleasantly surprised.

You are very correct. I have never played a sandbox game or minecraft either. I look forward to playing this new game. I am only trying to wrap my brain around what exactly my in-game goals will be.

However, the fact is that we saw and know only of like 15% (if even that) of whole game. On the other hand, having played Ultima Online, SWG and a tiny bit of EvE, i can get a somewhat basic understanding of game's progress concept :)

I am not complaining. I just want to understand how this model works. I fully intend to play and be a paid subscriber if there are any benefits in doing so (and they offer it).

Plus i am eager to see how will that "Creative Studio" or whatever that thing where you can sell/buy your stuff. But i sincerely hope they will not go with that freemium stupidity. F2P is fine, but freemium is an plague.

Your problem is you want something for free, but then you also want them to cater to your list of preferences. You get what you pay for. This is why I prefer a subscription based model. They get my money monthly and they have to earn my continued sub fee by supporting and updating the game. With F2P you have no voice and and no basis on which to make demands. You're just fodder for the whales they try to hook in the cash shop.

In my opinion, i think that best possible solution would be GW-esque b2p or any similar way of one-time payment (not speaking of one-time payment format of EQ/EQII, it was equally awfull as non-premium).

However, we wont see those most deffinatelly :(

I'd like to make houses and suck at it. Was the case with Minecraft and Sims as well and provided a millions of hours of fun :)

 

On the other side, sucking is a first step to being successfull :)

I know that this is a bit off-topic, but Dragon Prophet was made by those Runewaker guys, that made Runes of Magic, which a bit explains its crappy UI, cheap texture design, poor gameplay design etc. EQN was made by the core SOE team, while Dragon Prophet is more of a publishing thing (still beyond me why would they publish that junk, though).

People here obviously have different terms of "being hardcore". I really dont care about it. Make me an difficult and interesting game which can keep me playing it for more than 3 months and im happy. Plain and simple. Heck, i play LoL for years now, despite it having no long-term reward whatsoever (buying champions, runes etc. doesnt count).

Ive been reading through topic these days about EQ and all of stuff about it. All i can say is that i am pretty much excited (but not over-hyped). I liked those innovative and creative ideas they showed up at convention. I, also, really cant care less about art style and all of that stuff (i may even find it similar to older EQs, but its probably just me).

 

However, more on topic. What can probably make or break game for me is a payment model. I know that it will be f2p, but my question is: will SOE keep up with their 'Freemium' model as it is at EQ and EQII? In my opinion, it is toxic, in state as it is in those two games and it is nothing more or less than a subscription game behind f2p mask. Dont get me wrong, I have nothing against those people that can afford to play monthly subs, it is just that i dont want to pay monthly fees for an online game. First, there is far more cheaper options, even when it comes to freemium model, than SOE one. Second, i dont think that one game is worth of paying subs, not even MMO.

 

So, if someone knows more about this, please provide me with some more info about this topic, i would be gratefull. If SOE decide to go for some more convinient model, that would be great. Thanks in advance :)

It also has an action combat mode, perhaps the original action combat model, it can do it without any rooting either. The dungeons are unique and memorable. Well, maybe you are right afterall. When i said "slightly" i maybe meant on visual things or "some" combat improvements (if one can call them improvements afterall - its more easier to click/aim/target and now you can make some combos yaaaay /sarcasm) and of course, foundry, which may or may not be a good thing.

Out of that, game felt pretty much like DDO to me, except for the fact that DDO have more detailed build customization and more "memorable dungeons" (Voice of DM FTW :D). However, i do have reason why i didnt stayed long in DDO as well, but that is story for another time :)

Well, i did already mentioned that i had not tried foundry, but i will do so next time. I always loved modding tools and making/trying out mods or maps or anything. I also think that something like a foundry is a good idea for an MMO and so far ive been hearing mostly the positive things about it. However... however, unless modding tools can change the very mechanics of gameplay ("Skyrim Unleashed" or "SkyRE" mods for Skyrim comes to mind) little can mods do to improve whole gaming experience, except to add a little bit of content here and there (which is can be a good thing to some extent). But i wont say anything more about it untill i try it. Maybe they do surprise me pleasantly :)

As for final score, i sumed up the whole experience and my impressions for those first 2 days of my gameplay. It is final in that way, but by no means "finally" final (if you get what im saying hehe). When im gonna make a "Final impressions" topic that will be the thing :D (the score may differ from curent one, of course).

Before i start to write anything about game itself, i will mention couple of things. I am playing a Pen and Paper RPGs for more than 10 years and ive been playing various RPG rule systems (ADD 2.0, DnD 3e, 3.5, 4e, Pathfinder, Runequest, World of Darkness, Shadowrun, GURPS etc. just to name a few...)

And of course, i know that this proves no point, but i am actually one of the minority, that in fact is ok with DnD 4e. While it obviously have its flaws, i think that its combat is done ok and is ballanced well (no more "time stop" and other OP crap, yaaaaay). And, while i would host an "Hack and Slash" 4e session any day, other aspects of the rule system are a bit weaker, but i will not discuss them now, for this isnt topic about it. Long story short: DnD 4e isnt perfect but is fine system and can be fun to play with right and fun people.

Well, NW is obviously made around 4e ruleset, which can you see straight from the start and from the skill descriptions and skillbar setup (and i wll go into those details later on). Now this game have huge potential because of its licence, but it is still in beta so i did have a bit low expectations out of it, though they didnt surprised me even a bit (kind of expected, lol). Now i will go straight to the point, one by one.

 

CHARACTER CREATION 8/10 - I was actually overjoyed, when i saw that it have body and face sliders. Yes, faces are somewhat based around the presets, but you can customize it even further with complexion, tattoos/makeup, scars, etc. Same for bodies, each of races have a handfull of preset bodies, but you can come up with various shapes with sliders. Now, i came for a score of 8 just because those sliders are a bit way to hard-coded, so you cant actually go to such extremes (well, that can also be a good thing sometimes), but a bit more variations wouldnt be such a bad thing.

 

GRAPHICS/VISUALS 8/10 - I dont know what other have to say about it, but i actually liked a character and exterior design. It even reminded me on EQ/EQ II - not even a bit serious, but have its dose of charm and is a nice to eye. Now, this may not be the DnD that many are imagining while roleplaying (including maybe me), but is good enough, not to make you uninstall or puke, out of lousy visuals. Though an animation part (not the combat animation) still need a lot of work, in my opinion.

 

COMBAT 7/10 - The combat is actually a mix between a GW2 and Tera with a little bit DDO flavor added to it. And, while this may or may not be a bad thing, it fits DnD 4e system fine. Now the thing is, combat can become old very quick for some players and for those who dont prefer way to much action combat. Still, standing in place for caster classes can be very frustrating, especially with some mechanics that require proper positioning.

 

HANDHOLDING 5/10 - Obviously, this part became a standard when MMORPG genre came to the mainstream and this game surely suffers from it. The game litterally draws you your quest objectives and everything seems like a corridor, plus they are continously spoon-feeding you with items and levels. This whole feel leaves a bitter-sweet taste in your mouth and, unless you are player with an age of 8, you will begin to feel like you have some mentall illnes and they are treating you like that. In my opinion, this and next characteristic draw me out of game too much.

 

WORLD 2/10 - What happens with MMORPGs?!? Why all the newer titles feels like an straight linear corridors with quest chains that you need to complete to continue further. This was the very thing that made me to burn out of SWTOR very very very quick and is obviously present in this game as well. Why i cant roam freely trough whole Neverwinter and the rest of Fâerun (well, supposed part of it anyway)? Why am i locked within one zone just because i havent done all the main quests? No, this is a big minus from me. Let me go straight out to the forest, get my butt served to me back on a plate and try to return there for couple of levels. Pardon me, but this is why i liked the games such as EQ, GW2 or early WoW (this is stil present to some extent even in WoW)... they had you to go out and explore wherever you please. Yes, do zones, i am ok with it, it doesnt have to be a seamless world. But at least dont lock me out.

 

CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION 5/10 - Well, this is a themepark MMORPG afterall, so expect a gear-chasing to be major part of your power customization. The thing that bugs me is that, for the sake of DnD, they could put some more of stats/feats/i dont know customizing. Hell, even DDO had it. On the other hand, chosing dailies or encounter powers is pretty much 4ed thing, which maaaay be a fine thing, but you actually start to realise that the WotC went with 4e ruleset, only to adapt it so that the MMORPG developers can make a DnD licenced games and still stay "true to rules" without issues. But the proper MMORPG need a hell lot of more, other than a popular license to be a good MMORPG. History teached us that.

 

MUSIC 2/10 - It may be a nice music (still a matter of taste) but it gets old veeery fast. For the sake of your own sanity, mute the music, by all means. I may reccomend "Rhapsody of Fire" for awesome Epic Fantasy/Metal experience instead of in-game music ;)

 

FINAL SCORE 6.5/10 - This may be a nice game that may introduce Dungeons and Dragons universe to younger audience (eventhough i would recommend Baldurs Gate or Neverwinter Nights from 2000 as the most true DnD games any day) or may be a nice side game to play from time to time, but if the game stays in state like this, it will be quickly forgotten, especially with other titles that are around the corner. At this state, it is nothing more than slightly improved DDO, and i even doubt that it will attract a lot of active DDO players (i do hope that i would be proven wrong).

 

Keep in mind that this was still Beta and miracles can happen (though with a slim chances). I tried to be as objective as i can, but i need to see opinions from others. Sure maybe you guys out there find a weaker features, in my opinion, to be as actuall strong or good ones. I would really welcome opinions (not the bashing) of others. P.S.: i had a little time to test PvP, Foundry, Cash Shop and other aspects of the game, but i will do so in upcoming betas/release so i will make my judgement on those later on.
