I cant see the difference betwin grinding skills in DF or grinding gear, levels and faction/rep forever in other MMO's like WoW,EQ or whatever its all the same for me. I think people just love to hate DF. One difference is that all mmo's takes alot of time out of your life but DF also takes skill like a FPS game. If you can't master that its easier to just say you hate it :P

In regular mmorpgs you can be good and respected by spending time getting gear from a dungeon or raid and running a rotation of spells or skills on a locked target. In DF you don't get any respect if you can hit anything.

And I don't think it will be shut down. It will still be here after all the troll rage have died

This is a good post, but the real problem is, you get respect for both aspect in DF. Time spent grinding and FPS skill.

I got the FPS skill, but im a casual gamer. So i cannot join elite clan yet. I must be maxed or prove that i can stand against an other veteran. The real difference with DF is, most elite gamers got a life unlike wow or other mmorpg where you got your powerful character in a legit way. What i mean is, most of these elite macroed while sleeping, work IRL or anything else untill their characters became strong enough to compete. I know cuz i did it before with my older character. GM's dont even ban you for doing so. MMOrpg.com are not banning us to mentioning macroing in here as a result.

2.0 will change all that. 1st of all, meditation is here so you do not need to either keep your game on all night or play all day in order to progress. Tedious skills to raise will be remove from the game. Im mostly talking about passive and skill that you can only increase while macroing. You will be restricted and better on some part base on a set of gear you will chose to wear. This is like a class system. Stats will rise faster then before, so you wont need to rely on meditation only to raise them.

As a result, players who knows what they are doing will probably be able to max their playstyle under few weeks. As for new players, not more then 2 months. Maxing everything will be useless since you wont be able to use everything unless you go naked all the time.

What do you think will happen afterwards? You never heard about UO trammel when it got brought by EA?

Madness, i can tell you that im sure i wont play mortal online, earth rise or xyzon for the rest of my life. I think i speak for the rest of DF community when i say that. When DF players are not playing DF, what do you think they play instead? Competitive games. None of us are going to wow or will try rift.

If you did get some info from DF 2.0, you should know that you will probably be able to max a character in some weeks or 2 months compared to a year, so no form of reset will only make it worst since you will be maxed already be maxed. You should know that the left overs are those who macroed their way up anyway.

BTW, we got more info for the wipe. Read the rest below.

As far as the wipe or no wipe debate within the community, we are looking at ways to satisfy both sides. We respect our playerbase and our long-time active players and our relaunch is not meant to destroy the current game, but extend it. In the meanwhile, if it’s any indication, we’ve been investing heavily in the current game with the siege expansion.

Everyone know 2.0 will come in, but no one know when. We are just tired of 1.0 and after some info's from 2.0, we just cant wait to play it since 2.0 will probably be the best mmorpg ever. 1.0 already is, but the grind and the unlimited ways to exploit the game is insane.

What did killed 1.0 was the mention of a possible wipe.

This may kill DF if Aventurine doesn't make it extremely clear what their intentions are.

No, cuz DF is one of a kind.

2.0 update

Update, September 2
September 02, 2011 Tasos Flambouras 2 Comments

We noticed that there was some anticipation building up to the end of last month having to do with an ETA for Darkfall’s relaunch. We had previously mentioned that we would know more around this time. We’re in a better position to estimate but we haven’t concluded our discussions with our partners yet. Also, there are positive developments after the GDC which need a lot of consideration. Our goal is to have a smooth launch without problems for our players. Having learned from Darkfall’s first launch, we know there are numerous factors to consider. We’ll keep you updated on all our developments.

Regarding the Siege expansion, we’re still working on it. As we’ve explained previously this is a system we’re bringing back from the new version of the game and it’s a complete rewrite. We “trashed” the old system and did something new. We created a system to create siege systems that is completely configurable. This has been a lot of work. We had to develop it, test, configure the system, test everything, reconfigure, test, merge it with the current game which has been very difficult, test again etc. It’s a huge undertaking and we wouldn’t be doing this if we didn’t care about the state of the current game. At the moment it’s undergoing heavy final testing which, if all goes as planned, should be concluded early next week. We understand this is taking a long time but it also brings a lot to the game.

We have a video for you today. It’s important to understand that some things you see in these videos are from the new version, others are placeholders from the current functionality. Consider this something like an alpha version:

In this video you can see part of the new Niflheim dungeon. The dungeon will be inhabited by yetis among other things. You can also see one of the dynamic dungeon elements that we will be adding. These elements will make dungeon crawling a lot more interesting but also more dangerous. You can also catch a glimpse of the new blood spatter system that has been implemented.

The following bit is from our Lore team:

The locals refer to these icy depths as Frostbyte Lair. Among it’s numerous denizens hungering for the warmth of flesh one can find the ravenous yeti. While many roam above the caverns in the light of day, their main population has been driven below ground by their battles with the Vargashi. These lords of ice build cunning traps within their dungeon home to best prepare hapless adventurers into a hearty meal. Pictured below is Tenderizer Pass, a deadly bridge used to soften up their potential prey before meal-time!

We’ll keep you updated on any developments. After the siege expansion is out, we’ll be running down our development priorities and we’ll give you an activity report about that.

Thanks for reading

DF wont die or go free so calm down.

I only saw earth rise videos. Its slow as hell. I use to follow that game, but these videos makes me wonna puke.

Il say one thing tho. If you want to play DF before 2.0, then by default, id have to give it to earth rise even after what i said. The grind is still insane in df. You wont be ready before 3-4 months. When i say ready, i mean pvp viable atleast. Even as a destroyer that needs few stuff, it will still take you 3 months atleast since you will need to either swim in front of a wall or meditate your quickness to 100 before you can really start doing some damage. Then, you will need enough STR and VIT to unlock passive skills.

If you want to be a mage, forget it. there's no mages, just hybrids. Thats mean, you will have to grind everything to 75-100 including macroing. Destroyers dont need to macro, but they need to either stay offline/meditating for 3 months or swim into a wall all day and night. You do not pay a game to not play so do not take that option.

http://www.darkfallonline.com/blog/darkfall-2-0-a-closer-look/

We’ve talked about Darkfall 2.0 and Darkfall 2.0 features on several occasions. We’ve explained that this is a new game created on top of the current game rather simply an expansion. We do not want to get too specific for several reasons including that we don’t want to give everything away, also doing so might lead people to draw the wrong kind of conclusions or get caught up in irrelevant speculations and debates. On the other hand there are things we need to present to you in order to get feedback and to inform you of the changes to come.

Today, we’ll talk a bit about some of the changes that are already implemented. This is far from everything that’s going in to Darkfall 2.0, or what is changing. These are some of the points we’ll be giving more details on and discussing with you in the weeks to come. Thanks to Adam, Elias, and George P. for the information and Vagelis for putting it together.

  • Character skill set customization and role selection through the implementation of Darkfall’s new armor system and through attribute boost via achievements: What armor you wear  greatly affects which skills you can use effectively and it makes others ineffective. You’re highly specialized in one role making your character extremely efficient and effective in that role. The major attribute boost works exponentially to give your character access to special items and weapons setting him further apart from the hybrids. New skills are going to be added, and redundant ones will be removed from the game.
  • Skill and attribute gains have changed considerably. If a new player focuses on a single role, he will excel at that role in a relatively short time frame through casual play. More options and more roles will become available to him. Players can use one specialization at a time however.
  • Crafting System Overhaul: More customization options, visual cues as to what players are wielding as equipment rank is visually distinguishable. Increased importance of rare ores through infusion of other materials and closer correlation of ore rank and equipment rank. Gems are also a lot more important since they’ll be used in enchanting.
  • There’s a great increase in player housing spots and a more meaningful connection between villages and player holdings.
  • The world map has been completely changed. This isn’t simply about moving locations around, it’s about changing the geography of the world. Monster spawns have been redistributed so they are more relevant, and all NPC and player holdings have been completely redesigned.
  • Combat dynamics are much more tactical now. Changes affect several skills like blocking and disabling blow, and introduce new mechanics such as momentum and crosshair wobble.
  • Complete redesign of the magic schools and their physics with clearly defined roles to spells, opposing magic schools, ability to assume different roles in combination with the attribute boost system (damage dealer, healer etc.). The magic system is built to promote cooperation among players.
  • Complete redesign of most dungeons. New dynamic elements such as traps, moving objects and one-way doors have been implemented.
  • Changes to the grid of teleportation chambers. No chambers exist in player holdings anymore and they are strategically placed to enhance PvP tactics.
  • More changes to the Alignment system: Lawful areas are limited to the immediate vicinity of racial capitals and surrounding NPC faction cities. There’s an increase in the lawful area protection with increased tower coverage.
  • The incapacitation system (gank/decapitation/revive rules) is revised in order to improve player PvP and PvE experience.
  • There have been adjustments to physics to achieve more realistic results.
  • All item properties, numeric values, calculation formulas and the like are completely redone.
  • We’ve introduced a new Graphical User Interface which includes both new visual elements and new functionality. It offers a streamlined experience to the players alleviating all shortcomings of the previous one.
  • A new map tool with a lot of information added including vendor locations and items for sale.
  • Serious improvements to the new player experience, including training quests on all basic aspects of the game.
  • More changes to the new siege system we’ve already described.
  • Redesigned monsters, monster families, monster abilities, and all loot tables redone from scratch.
  • A new lighting system and new visual effects.
  • New environmental audio system and many additions and replacements to existing sounds. New area based music.
  • Changes in models, textures, animations and most visual aspects of the game.

These are just brief mentions on exciting and sweeping changes compared to the existing game. These changes, along with the ones we’re not talking about yet, are the products of years of experience with Darkfall, lessons learned, and thousands of pieces of feedback from the community. In the coming weeks we’ll present each of these points in depth, with specific information on the mechanics of each point.

As for our current activity, we’re fighting some bugs in the new siege system which are pushing our ETA back again. We’ll keep you posted on our progress with that.

Thank you for reading.

I started with 120 and it would mostly jump at 180 ping. The game is not fun. You cant even melee and archery well. I dont want both Eu and na to be one or i will be forced to play as full mage again. Since i had 40 pings, i rerolled as a destroyer and i like that new play style that requires much more playerskills to masterd.

Hark, this is your problem and eurogamer's problem. You just cant get pass the bad part of DF that is the start of the game. The worst thing is, what you hate is what we like. Dont call me a fan boy just because i like a diferent type of game. I dont consider DF to be like any other mmprg on the market. In fact, this game mostly attract fps competitive gamers while ed is from wow.

The stuff you dont even praise is:

FPS, open world pvp full loot, conquest, boats, 0 instances...

First I have to remind that I was simply trying to point out that much of the animosity against Eurogamer is tad ill-founded. On the merits of the game, I guess that I can agree that there is no lacking courage on Aventurine for trying to fulfill their vision. Nonetheless, I have said quite a few times on this forum as well, that as it currently stands there are better FPS games and better RPG games and the amalgam that is Darkfall does not entice me.

Also, it is somewhat simplistic to state that a dislike of the core design would be a hatred towards the type of gaming. At no point did I refer to any of you as a fanboy or anything like, the sole reference to fans being made by Mr Zitron whom I quoted. His argument actually was just the one you are posting: "I am not the one who should be playing this game. I am doing it all wrong if I fail to enjoy it." However, I do like FPS and I do like RPG and the most I would love to play a sandbox MMO with an FPS combat-system. Too bad what Darkfall has to offer is falling short from my expectations, be they unrealistic or not.

And the reasons I find Darkfall lying somewhere south of my expectations echo those concerns raised by Mr Zitron on his review. The game does feel more like a chore or a tedious exercise in dullness. The only advantage joining a guild does provide is a chance to participate somewhat more on the PvP (if you're lucky), but as that PvP is not as enthralling as what you can find from pure FPS games it does not salvage the game.

I'll promise to try the game once again when they finally release DF 2.0, but if the ruleset will remain the same even after the release of this shinier version of Darkfall, I am relatively certain that the new dungeons and prettier armours won't keep me interested and everything else is still offly vague.

Of course an FPS game is gonna be better then darkfall on the FPS aspect. FPS games use small maps, instant pvp, not more then 8vs8 for the majority of them while DF can hangle 100vs100. FPS games to me personally, they get old after an hour of gameplay i give up on them sooner then expected. They specially start becoming boring when you max out their progression system since the game becomes more easy then ever.

As for the RPG, you dont get what DF is trying to be. As a sandbox mmorpg, the players are the one making the stories. You shouldnt be guided by quests. Sandbox are not known for having a good lore, linken quests and stuff that the developers expect every single player to do like in an amusemant park. They are known for the unpredictable random factor that makes everyday gameplay different everytime. In other words, sandbox never ends while mmorpg like wow, once you are done with all the raids, there's nothing to do untill the next patch. When you got the best gears in game, there's no point to keep playing.

Yes, i understand that darkfall is lacking. What you dont understand and what the eurogamer reviewers dont get is, you shouldnt review a niche game with a small amount of developers + low resource the same way you would review a mainstream mmorpg. While a niche game needs time to get everything in place before advertising, a mainstream one will always try to be perfect for the launch day. In fact, darkfall 2.0 is gonna be a relaunch. When darkfall 1st launched, it was a pay to play beta and the worst launch ever. They just didnt have enough resource to keep going and they use to delay way too much time. Most players left and came back later because we all knew it would take so long to fix the game, but we had faith on them unlike eurogamers that thinks a niche game will never become good one day. I dont even expect them to do a 3rd review since they dont even care.

Its your choice to play darkfall like doing a chore. You are not forced to do some of these tedious things. If you hate the grind, you can simply chose to play as a destroyer. They got few skills to raise and all you need is quickness and VIT with them. 2 stats only. Archery is the fastest skill to raise. You can kill a vet with that only if you can kite well. If you hate mining, logging and overall crafting, skip them. I dont even do that myself. even before destroyers existed, players who hated the grind would go full on melee archery. They would simply work on getting their gears to go pvp early.

Anyway, for 2.0, i hope you will like the game. My 1st mmorpg was wow and i left DF after 3 days only. It took me sometime to like darkfall. I watched some end game pvp videos, thats where i wanted to be to have fun and it is fun as hell. Thats why i keep playing that game.

Ed zitron could not talk about these stuff because he was still naked when he was done. He only used 9 hour + time wasted during character creation. There's no way you can review an mmorpg in 9 hour, its not even a full trial. The gui is indeed bad, but with time, it becomes bearable. In the longrun, you just cant recall how bad it was if you use the proper tools too.

If you complain because you get kill at the goblin, you are probably doing something wrong. By simply asking questions, you can get some good advice to not do the same obvious mistakes. Thats how you can keep going in DF. Bank often was one of them. Jon a clan early and more.

"All Characters, Banks, and Holdings will be wiped clean from the server at the onset of the expansion."

What the heck? So am I losing my character wilth all the investment of time I have done on it? Am I losing my hard earned levels and bank? What the heck? No way I start everything again. Bye, bye darkfall.

A wipe wont happen i believe.

But if you followed the news and everything, you should know that the grind wont exist in 2.0 anymore. You wont be able to use everything in a fight according to the gear you wear. Prestige class, i dont know if its still on the plan, but if it is, it will reduce the grind even more. Most passive skills including buff will be remove. Probably a revamp on spells too.

Now you know, even a newb will be able to catch up really fast. So even if there is a wipe, it wont be a problem at all.

You must join a clan. Dont randomly apply. Check the forum, check what fits best for you.(I suggest empire for newb's if NA1) Try to pm Supreme generals so you can ask them questions before you join.

The number 1 mistake most newb's do, they live in npc city for too long. When they get kill too much, they give up. You should join a clan and learn from the best. Participate with your mates in some pvp and group pve. Thats fun.

Look, my 1st mmorpg was wow and its normal to rage quit. After my 1st 3 weeks, i give up since DF was too harsh for me. The jump from mainstream friendly game to an harsh one like darkfall, the shock is just too much to bear all that. So you probably need a break. After that, the best thing to do is to watch some Darkfall video on youtube to see how the end game really is. If you really like DF, you will want to be one of these vets, so you will want to try DF again and play untill you get there.

Are you sure you want the DF team to control MO? Ok, OP, you really dont know what you are talking about. MO devs are 100 time better. Its just harder to work around the unreal engine into an mmorpg, specally by a small compnay.

So let me get this. You want every player holdings to be stationated before the game even started? In DF, you cant even custumize anything. You cannot change the location of any buildings. Even Villages are already made. You just have to go there with a card and claim it your own.

You want no cap or decay? You want to be able to double jump into a city instead of destroying the walls 1st? You want archery to be so fast and melee so sprint forward and spam? Lol, you want to craft a mount figuring and spawn it instantly.

Seriously...

Pretty much every other game is going F2P.....F2P Darkfall probably isn' t far away...especially if DF2 doesn't bring more players.

The reason why other mmo's go F2p, its because there's already wow. Every mmo are pretty much like wow. Like we always say, dont try to fix it when its not broken. Instead, they try to cpoy pass and make it better . They fail and go F2P afterwards.

As for Darfkall, there's nothing like that game. There's probably only 2 fps mmorpg with open world full loot conquest pvp. Thats why we got a strong player base from old school games like Ultima online. Even me, my 1st mmorpg was wow and when i found out about DF, i coulndt get off that game because of how fun it is. So yeah, our loyal fans like the game enough to stay.

DF wont go F2P, you can be sure of that. AV dont even advertis their, so they can make some profit from the low community left. So many of our loyal fans got more then 2 acounts too.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-07-12-darkfall-2-0-may-wipe-current-characters

Internet whispers suggest Aventurine will make Darkfall 2.0 free-to-play. Current Darkfall players will not have to pay for Darkfall 2.0, promised Flambouras, and those loyal fans will also be invited to test Darkfall 2.0 as well as conclude Darkfall 1.0.

Listen, DF will never go F2P. There's a 15 day trial, one time per IP. Try the trial. If you dont like it, dont ever expect DF to be free. So either try it again by swithcing IP or buying it, or face the fact that DF is simply not for you.

Im not mad, its just funny to see how Eurogamer website hate DF. 1st, 2/10 review. Then 4/10 review. These reviewrs are some wow players so they dont deserve DF anyway.

For those who dont know, this is a news reporter tacitc. They cant express their opinion so they use random ppl to voice their opinion for them. They pick up the one they want to most and there you go. I just dont know what Eurogamer got against DF, but its just funny to see how much they hate that game.

OMG, i didnt read the journal. MMO! lol! I mean, laugh out lawd.

Seriously, If LOL can have that title, why not HON too? In every matches, you reset to level 1. So how can you call that mmo? Raising skills after each match is just an excuse,

but we cant still call it mmo or else, even Call of duty, battlefield and plenty of games would also be mmor.

Dungeon means no safety, but you got enough safety to max most of your skills. I use to live in a dungeon where you could macro on multiple mobs and from 0-25, i could jump to 75+ or even 100 in 2 days in 4 different spells, The 3 fire nukes and the huge one. You just dont know how effective it is to macro on mobs.
