Seems like NCsoft has a hit on their hands.

kotaku.com/index.php

Korean gamers love their MMO games, but apparently they're loving on one more than most. That one is Aion: The Tower of Eternity from NCsoft. The open beta test for the game launched earlier this week over in the land of...Korean things, and already they've surpassed 170,000 players - and that's concurrent. 170,000 players all at once, all for Aion. Knowing Korean gamers, they're still playing right now, or at least the survivors are.

“The response we’re seeing in Korea is incredibly exciting,” said David Reid, president of publishing for NCsoft West in Seattle. “Our Aion community in North America and Europe is also rapidly growing. We’ve got aggressive plans for the western launch in 2009”.

That isn't easy to do.. but in Asia.. it's probably alot easier. 170k concurrent means 170,000 people playing AT THE SAME TIME.

That's crazy good.

I am just thinking aloud and what not so please don't take anything I say seriously.

To me it feels like NCsoft is giving us the shaft a bit. Now  I know we are all excited over Aion and thats great but I just keep getting the feeling the devs really don't give a crap about us. Now I know some of you are going to say "Well they said they are going for a world wide audience" but remember people can say one thing and do another.

Now with Korea's open beta up in full flame, you hear all this great stuff about the game. You hear how its breaking records, and how much the fans love it. Hearing all these things is great, except for the fact that 90% of them are coming from fan translations.

I can buy the idea that they don't want us to see the game without all the polish on it. Heck none of us wants Aion to read like a Nigerian spam email, but the fact that 'the west' has no contact with the developers and the only times we are addressed by them is in off statements troubles me. Now if this was a company like Blizzard I wouldn't be so worried. Blizzard love them or hate them has a great track records with their games with the fun factor and support. But as we all know this is NCsoft, we are reaching out on a limb and throwing a tad of trust at them. Anyone who knows mmorpg history knows how bad they shafted the west with the lineage series.

I don't know, well I am going to head to bed now, its a little after midnight and I have to work tomorrow. Best of luck everyone

I suggest taking a peak and some of the live streams, so far i must say, the game looks incredibly polished. To use a mediphore, the devs only need to dust off and do a little bit more buffing to shine it up a tad, And walla.

Where are the live streams?

Aion's Korean open beta is now boasting concurrent user numbers of 150,000.
Since launching the service at 6am on the 11th, 150,000 players managed their way into Atreia by 11pm the same day. Aion is now operating with a total of 25 servers, with each server exceeding the 5000 player target NCsoft had set out for their servers.

Upon login, players are finding most servers on the list marked as 'full'. Taking into account all the users in queue for the servers, the number of concurrent users could possibly be seen as closer to 200,000. Considering that the launch was done on a weekday, the numbers are expected to go up as many more attempt to join over the weekend.

(ETnews reports that this is a record for a Korean developed MMO opening in Korea. The past record holders have been Lineage2 and Ragnarok 2 but even they were only able to reach 100k after a month of open beta testing. No mention of how WoW did in comparison, but WoW had over 150k concurrent users at its peak during its Korean open beta according to an interview with Mike Morhaine.)

NCsoft is now dealing with the happy dilemma of handling a much greater level of interest than they'd anticipated. Having already added 7 more servers than originally planned, continuing to add to that pool is only one way of handling the situation. The first change implemented immediately was to cut down on the scale of the promotions that were planned to begin on the 13th. This decision was made so that Aion's user base grew in increments that they could actually handle.

Unsurprisingly, many players are venting their frustration at the situation. Players that used the pre-beta services to reserve their spots had it easier, but those that didn't were having to wait in long queues just to create their characters. (note: Many of these players were sitting in netcafes as well, so you can imagine the added pressure.)

Is there a north american Beta?

I'd like to see a real D&D mmo using rolling dice and all.

They should of made it so that only a specific amount of people on each server could become one.

Like say only 500 of them on each world.

D&D Online is as far away from a true D&D version game than you can get..

Turbine used to be a great company but after AC1 it just went downhill.

Test being the key word here.

I got to thinking, with Aventurine bing on such a limited budget (if little is the word.. and budget is an actual word that can be used..) would you hire somebody to test your product when there are thousands of people that will do it for free?

I know that Professional testers might know how to test certain things.. but would it be so hard to have an internal message board with what will be testing that day? Or week or month?  So, I ask.. Would YOU test darkfall and report bugs/flops/problems?

Professional testers are no different than regular people testing.. they just do it better cause they'r paid to do it.

Nope I don't sorry but keep trying.

Just cause I used a comparison to well known MMO that was being built along the same time as DF.... even started development I think the SAME YEAR as DF... tha's STRANGE???

Get a grip.

Well known MMO?? You made a comparison to the biggest scam/trainwreck this industry has ever known, and you call that a 'well known MMO'??

Well ya... that's one of the reasons why it was well known.  It was actually much more well known and followed then Darkfall was before it tanked..

When did I ever say it was well known for being good?

It was only well known for being a scam that just wouldn't die, it kept coming back up, with a different name and different company (the assholes behing those 'companies' were the same, but names were different).

And here you are, trying to get people D/L that crap. I wonder why...

I linked to a video to compare graphics of two well known games that were bein built the same time in a thread that was talkin about Engines and graphics quality..

And mourning WAS a bigger trainwreck than even DnL .. but it was not a scam. It was an unfinished mess..  They had servers online.. people were loggin in and playing it.  I know at least 1 guild that played it.  First mechanized infantry.

and that loudant thing you linked to was not the same company... they hired that company years back to work on the game.  there was even legal docs online saying they got rid ofthat company for stealing their engine stuff

It makes me cry

Well ya... that's one of the reasons why it was well known.  It was actually much more well known and followed then Darkfall was before it tanked.. so not sure why you would think it's strange to say it was not well known.  Between Dark and Light and Mourning - Darkfall was the least followed of the three back than.

When did I ever say it was well known for being a game good?

Here let me link to a video of Dark and Light now to compare graphics..  so I can be a developer of that game too!  weeeeeeeee

It is a good game...if you don't mind poor char customization, boring combat and quests that suck and mediocre graphics...

I guess it depends on what you consider character customization.  Unlike other games with skills unlocked/level or even customizable skill trees, your character's skills in Atlantica Online are pretty limited. That being said, In Antlantica your mercenaries are essentially your skills and are, therefore, an extension of your character's abilities.  There are so many possible combinations that you have an extremely wide array of choices to customize how your character will behave in combat AND you can swap out mercenaries.  I wouldn't call that poor at all...

If you simply mean how your character looks, then your choices are rather limited, especially when you first create your character.

Regarding combat, at low levels the combat is pretty simple, but I wouldn't call it boring.  Whil the core of the game is turn based combat, it can get quite deep and exciting, especially due to the number of mercenaries you control, the timer, the number of attacks/round,  the fact that it's done in real time, etc..

Graphics - I would agree that they're nothing special, but they aren't horrible either.  Frankly, some people are graphics snobs.  It looks pretty enough, though I think the game could perform better given the fact that the graphics aren't bleeding edge.

Is there a Beta for this?

I logged into WoW the other day...  and all I see are Deatth Knights running around everywhere. Everyone and their mother has one now..  and they are WAY overpowered...

No I don't really.

Just cause I used a comparison to well a known MMO that was being built along the same time as DF(even started development I think the SAME YEAR as DF )  to compare Engines and graphics in a thread that was discussing that very thing??... How's that strange?

It's not my fault DF graphics held up like shit to others games being built in the same era.

Get a grip.

Oh really?

I know it's tough defending DF from it's own reality when the dev's take shits on their fanbase on a daily basis and never back up any of their claims but surely you can come up with something a little better.

Keep grasping those straws

Straws?

So you are comparing Darkfall, which has not been released yet, to a 4 year old game. Great defense.

That world of warcraft character and screenshot from 4 years ago doesn't look bad...

Here's a much better comparison of two MMO's from the same era.. these graphics are from that old cancelled MMO Mourning built the same time as Darkfall is / was bein built.

www.bigdownload.com/games/abyssal-engine-development-tools/pc/abyssal-engine-video-demo-2

3-4 years ago their engine had much better graphics then Darkfall does right now and even now still looks better then games like Warhammer...... there's a playable tech demo you can D/L from a part of the world there too.

Try harder.

so what's your point?

I never started that thread. But if it makes you feel better to think that go right ahead.

I know it's totally impossible to believe that there's actually other people out there on the net who think Darkfall is actually a joke beyond myself but give it a try.. you might be shocked at what you find.

The reason other major titles like WAR and AoC cant really compete?

OK, maybe this isnt the ONLY reason but its a good indicator (Blizz is genius):

Money invested....

WoW is the most expensive MMO ever made, the dev team was huge and man hours for development were nearly unlimited.

Vanguard cost less then WoW and tried to do so much more (housing, ships, flying mounts, mounted combat, flying combat, ship combat and at least three times as many dungeons).... stretched the budget way too thin and of course flopped.

AoC and WAR tried to emulate WoW's success, but invested far less money and resources.  The result was a more limited (basically pure combat only) game that was less finished and polished... and had far less attention to detail.

For many people (not you WOW haters) what makes the new releases seem so inadequate is the way they compare to WoW..... why play a game that is so similar if its not nearly as well done? (and also of course that they aren't different enough.... making it feel like you've already "been there and done that")

The reason WoW is on top is pretty simple...   It caters to the geberal public... it's very well built... and  plays on everyones computer.

No. Why on earth would I have an account there?

But good try at saving some face. You're almost as big of a failure as Tasos and crew.

Seeing that you have an account in almost every other forum in the internet, it's a valid question.

How's that Mourning coming along? Can I get a preorder soon?

I have an account in every forum?   Which ones would those be?

Again -- more failure from the Darkfall camp. Keep trying.

Yes, you're Teedle. The infamous DF troll, the weirdo who creates accounts all over the internet just to bash DF. The same dork who's been against Darkfall since the Mourning days, infact you're propably one of the producers/devs on Mourning.

And I don't care how much you try to deny it, your simplistic grammar and the fact that you every once in a while advertize Mourning are the only proof I need.

Iv actually been playing Exteel a long time today alone I spent about 4 hours on it. It has a lot of mmorpg features which you can look as a bad thing or good thing, it has levels and build up but it also balances it by making rooms for different level caps. I gotta say though level 30-60 are a pain and are so poorly balanced, after 60 I hear it gets much better.

Dungeon runners I play once in a while, it has a lot of funny features that keep me coming back to it lol

I recommend exteel more than DR simply because its more casual and more of a play when ever game. Levels trullly dont mean anything since you can always just play with the rooms that are around your level unless you get above 30 then you are kinda screwed.

Try Asheron's Call. I can't think of any other MMO worth trying anymore
