*snip*

The only thing really wrong with it, is the effect it's having on the rest of the game. Orr is dead. Been grinding Karma to get myself a nice set of exotic karma gear, and now there's no way to actually get it since all the places where you could get it are contested and deserted. Great huh?

Events that require large groups have become redundant. Rewards from these events irrelevant as you can't complete them anyway. How are you going to persuade enough people to go do a regular "champion" event for now irrelevant gear?

The whole fractals things is basically just killing the rest of the game. "The whole game WAS endgame, up until the introduction of Ascended Gear. The end game has been reduced to spamming for groups in Lions Arch.

That's a real disappoinment, and it goes against their original design philosophy.

Mybe, just maybe everyone on your server already got that stuff so now they moved on to new goals?

It happens all the time in MMOs. If you progress too slowly you get left behind.

This is why so many people play MMOs on day one and rush to max level. they want to stck with the majority of the population and get all the cool stuff with them because the more people that do it, the easier it is.

On my server I see the same thing. Players that took their time. Just hitting 80 a week or so ago and begging for runs through stuff that we all did the first month of release.

GW2 is about an Optional gear grind...

Once i hit 80 on my ranger and crafted quality stuff for myself I was done.

It was my choice to look at the dungeon vendors and it was my choice to focus on a set of gear that hardly had any statistical  benefit. It looked cool and I wanted it.

Its no different that doing repeatable events in WoW or Rift for a cosmetic item or mount.

You don't need it, but it appeals to you because it makes you look bad ass.

Well, to be fair that is the question the OP asked.  It is in the heads of us who like to game for nice items.  The op wanted to know if the nicest items are all behind raid locks and that answer is yes.  From the perspective of "is this gear good enough for me to enjoy myself" then source stone and overland gear is great.  From the perspective of "where can I find the ultimate progression gear" then it's about raids and other gear doesn't measure up.   The wow comparison he made makes no sense to me though.  They seem about the same with their end game gear focus.
Theres a difference between wanting the nicest gear and being treated like a second class citizen. Thats what I was responding to.
Rift is all about raiding, everything else is secondary.

If you don't have the best items, if you arent in the high tier raid guilds you are nothing.

Its not in my head, it's how progression based raid games have worked since EQ.

OP don't let these guys spin the BS. Rift = Raiding. If you dont want to raid find another game.

Not sure what the agenda is, but thats simply not true. I dont raid. I dont even do dungeons anymore. I have more things to do in rift than most other current themeparks. Game isnt raid or die. That is a fact.

It's not an agenda...

Its a fact that once you add a progression raid system in your game it becomes the focus.

You say you don't raid, fine but im pretty sure you have an underpowered character that many would consider worthless.

Maybe the OP could play like you? Who knows. Maybe he could play in a bubble and ignore the entire community around him. Maybe he would be happy doing half the DPs a raid tank does, maybe he's cool with getting booted out of groups because all you have is garbage dungeon gear on?

We should ask him.

Anyway, I'm probably not returning until they add massive multiplayer space combat.  I'm guessing that will be 2015.

LOL dude... keep dreaming. What do you think this is a successful mmo?

EA wouldn't invest the dough required to create a legit space game within a mmo thats failed and went f2p.

It's an even bigger raid game than WoW...

Sure you can do other things but you would be considered a second class citizen.

I don't know about you but I dont like being looked down upon in a game.

It doesn't matter if you pay 15 bucks or 5 cents a month.

If you pay for WoW at all you are counted.

I'm not going to waste my time trying it discredit 10 million subs.

They have 10 million active paying accounts even if different countries have different payment methods.

This article was clearly written for those who despise the game.  Way to stir up drama by bringing up the doctors leaving again.  The F2P model has brought many new players and many returning players to the game.  The starter worlds have hundreds of players on every server.  The game is a solid game and fun to play.  I have had several friends come try the game out and enjoy it and plan to subscribe now.

I am glad the game has restrictions on chat and other things to prevent the gold spammers from running Amuk.  I like alot of the cool new content that was added to the game through the cartel market.  As a subscriber, I like the option to unlock legacy perks with cartel coins instead of spending credits on it.  I got rocket boots now and they Rock!  The game is cheaper to subscribe than buy every option through the cartel market, they had to do this, its economically solid.  If they hadn't made it htis way, they would have lost all the subscribers, but now if you enjoy the game and want to play all the time then its cheaper to subsribe and get almost everything, there are still market unlocks even for subscribers but you get monthly cartel coins for this which is more bang for your buck.  However, if you only want to do certain things in the game occasionally, then you can!  Say you only want to do warzones on thanksgiving week, then just buy a weekly pass for a week instead of subbing for a month, Gasp options, how terrible of them, burn them at the stake!!

The two hotkey bar rage seems over the top, I only use 2 hotkey bars as a subscriber at lvl50 even though I can use all 6 if I desired, I only use 2 and have no problems in the game.  Why?  Because that is the most efficient way for me to play and it works fine, anyone complaining about this is just stretching for reasons to complain.  I find more than 2 hotkey bars is clutter and that I only use specific skills for what I"ve trained in, which eliminates certain abilities as not optimal and thus don't need to be on the hotkey bar.

After I got bombed by gold spammers in GW2, it is refreshing to not have gotten even 1 email from a gold spammer in this game.  After watching hackers and botters run Amuk in GW2, its refreshing not to have to deal with that in ToR.  If I have a technical problem, I can call and get an actual person on the phone to deal with my problem.

I'm glad to see many new players playing the game and enjoying it, but then again, in game experiences and forum experiences always tend to wildly vary.

Good post. I'm playing this game with my 8 year old son. He loves it. I hope EA/Bioware make enough money off of this to make SWTOR have a good endgame. Sorry Section X and a couple raids arent endgame.

THe game needs more Operations,  more endgame worlds, more warzones, more flashpoints and a ton of fluff.

maybe we will get luck and an Expansion will release with new classes and legit Star wars races like the ones we saw in SWG.

As a leveling player the f2p restrictions dont hit you hard.

You get 100% all missions for free

You get all classes for free

You get sprint at 15, Speeder training at 25

You get two action bars (Enough for skills to 50 as long as u access buffs through skill panel)

You get two out of three crew skills (it costs less than 5 dollars to unlock the third or you can purchase this out of the AH)

You only get two auction house slots ( ive been able to make money with this restriction)

Commendations are capped at 20 (hasent really been a problem for me)

Credit cap set at 250k to 350k depending on the type of f2p player you are. This is meaningless for leveling players.

You cant wear purple gear. Honestly this is a good thing. You dont need purple items. You can level using orange, blues & greens. Use the purples to sell in AH so you can unlock cartel items through the AH.

I agree that F2p hits returning endgame players hard, but for people wanting to level up a couple classes its pretty great.

Map may be larger than your average fps, but not all of the map used. Each area is like playing  BF3 map. There is no difference. Dont see to many people hiking the 10k between battlesites, and each battlesite is about the same as a large BF3 map.

Game is ok, but nothing i cant get from a fps game.

compared to BF3:

Player progession....check

unlock weapons...... check

unlock accerorries .... check

tanks.... check

flying things.... check

multiple classes you can change once dead..... check

camping.... check

people playing fps solo and killing the team ..... check

Friendly fire...... check

grenades, prime weapon, 2nd weapon........ check

no alien life forms, no true reason to take over a base, no reward for winning other than to win....... check

win/lose/kdr/etc....... check

Not much difference. BF3 maps are of good size, and after playing PS2 for a few hours i never realy needed to move to another area. So basicaly you have a huge world map but only a small portion is used. And i ahvent seen more than maybe 50 people in any given area yet, no thousands of players in same area. So player base and map sized compared is about the same.

Its new and all flashy, so of course it feels like it is more than it realy is.

Exactly^^Tthe one's here trying to tell me PS2 is more mmofps than any other FPS recently released is full of delusions

1800+ players vs 64 or whatever small amount BF3 can handle... This is what makes PS2 stand out from every other game.

So basically to sum up PS2 its just flipping territory and thats it.

I played for about 3 hours and I'm really disapointed I was really hoping for a great game.

* Map is much much smaller than I expected. I expected it to be a world .

* No safe zones , I didnt do much research on this game but when I think mmorpg I think cities , safe zones and auction houses.

* Nothing player built.

This is the first time I support a FTP game, I dont like FTP but Im really glad I was able to try this game out before I wasted money on it.

Between SWTOR , Tera , WOW getting Lazy , Diablo 3 sucking and now this PS2 crapfest , in my opinion video games as a whole are really starting to suck lately.

at least its free... and not pay2win ;)

its p2w

before you are able to buy all the upgrades and stuff

a guy who paid already have best weapons, armor, +25% more hp and kill you with 3 bullets :)

when you need to put full magazine into him

not mentioning alot of bugs like screen flickering, texture dissapearing, porting enemies, tanks etc

and random fps drop to 1fps

A game is only pay2win if you can pay with cash stuff that can't be achieved in game through gameplay.

With PS2 this is not the case.

Planetside 2 = MMOFPS

Firefall =  MMORPG FPS

Maybe you should try Firefall? its f2p. It has a world with missions and other traditional mmorpg features.

PLanetside is basically battlefield 3 only 10 times the size.

I suggest finding a squad and traveling with them it leads to more chances of action and it will be safer for you, large open swaths of the battle field are part of the game, and make perfect areas to set up ambushes, especially when you can start figuring out the direction enemys are more likely to start hoofing it from. Going out alone will start to lead to you getting ambushes and killed and then we gotta hear people complaining about gankers, when in a war senario such as this its a legitimate tactic.

Also stated above, theres plenty access to ground or flying vehicles that help get to combat quicker, but you cant expect to see whats going on everywhere all the time, plenty of groups tend to avoid action untill they get to where they wanna strike and then Blitzgrieg it.

Im watching the count down timer patiently....more or less lol

I love the game, my complaint wasn't with the long treks so much as the big dead world we play on.

They could spruce it up a bit, make the world feel like a living breathing thing.

Its not that big of a complaint to be honest and wont stop me from playing.

Its just something that i wonder when i am on my treks here and there.

Actually no.  I don't like instances, and the new island seems to be the most boring zone in the entire game.  Even if I did like it though, what am I going to do, just keep killing stuff there, for no reason?  That's like improving the carrot on the stick paradigm, by simply removing the carrot.  Yay, now we just have a stick.  Thanks, ANet, good luck with that.

So... you're playing a MMORPG and you don't like dungeons or running open world content? Why are you playing?

Well, I'm not anymore.  That's kind of my point.

So you completely quit playing MMOs or decided to go play EVE? because the crap thats bothering you in GW2 is in every themepark MMO.

I haven't been rushing, but I still got to level 80 eventually.  I even tried like hell to avoid it, by making lots of alts.. but now, here I am, and find myself on the verge of quitting, because there's nothing I want to do.  Just feels like a dead end.  I wish they had some sandbox or fluff type RP things to do, at least.  Or maybe PvP that was more like RvR, but I know that'll never happen.  They need *something* other than cosmetics for people to work towards, longterm.

Seems like ANet is completely clueless when it comes to the concept of making gameplay rewarding.  Even pac-man had levels, and people played to get to the next one, until they got to the end.  Progression is a concept that's been a part of video games as long as they've existed.

Cutting that away in the name of fun, is like saying candy doesn't need sugar, because its candy.

You dont like the new zone? or the dungeon??

I have one level 80 ranger, im still doing map completion with that guy while leveling a Necro & Eng.

Im looking at this new content and not seeing how A-net went against its original design.

THey said you wouldn't grind for items.

Whats a grind? Its running the same content over and over in hopes of obtaining a reward.

Last I checked the dungeon was random (the zone has random events also).

You run 3 levels that are randomly pulled from 9. You get a unique experience everytime you run the dungeon.

How is that grinding?

I think its come to the point that if you have to do anything for an extended period of time people will cry and say its grinding...

What are you rushing for?

Level 80 is just a number, same with stats on gear.

You play these games because they're enjoyable right?

Why are you rushing through the gameplay for the numbers?

Acting as if 99% of the game is simply in the way of you being 80 with exotics on...

Should have saved yourself the trouble and kept your cc/money in your pocket.

Edit: I've played a ton of MMOs and honestly its always the same. You level, hit max level, max out a craft or two, dungeon run for gear, pvp for gear (cosmetic or stat based) and wait for more content.

Wow, Rift, SWTOR, LOTRO, AOC, WAR, AION, TERA, TSW, EQ2, Vanguard... i can go on and on. All of them offer a similar end goal.

"huge treks for nothing" ... are you SERIOUS!?!? Do you NOT LOOK AT THE MAP?

Listen, look at the map.  There are "instant action" drops that put you RIGHT into combat.  Highlight the area hex's... it'll say... enemy detected, enemy platoon detected, no activity detected.

The United States in WORLD WAR II was in the war but how many major fights were in Iowa or Arkansas?  None.  So why would you DEPLOY there?  You'd deploy to the action.

There's a timer on the drop... if you drop down and there's very little fighting you could be stuck out in the open.

Its like traveling in DayZ, could take forever and a day to get to the next "hotspot" and that skirmish could be over as well or it could be one single newb just fliping stuff... then you have to trek again.

its second behind WoW in the MMORPG category.

WoW, GW2, SWTOR, AION, EVE, LOTRO

in that order.

it seems to be doing well overall.

The entitled griefer.

The ones that think they are entitled to 100% freedom to ruin someones day while the players that dont want any part of that action are either forced to get protection or be locked up in 5% of the game world like prisoners in a camp.

I've have arguments with these guys for hours that think this is perfectly ok...

They are the kryptonite of the sandbox sub-genre and most don't realize it.
