My simple reason for not playing MMO's anymore is that they turned more and more into games and less focus on the virtual world aspects. I.e. the vast majority of design decisions are based on easy access, streamlining, balancing etc., where they in my view should be targeting immersion, player freedom and realism. |

There was a time when I could not picture single player games as a part of my gaming future. RPG's (and PC games in general) to me have always been about escapism and get immersed in virtual worlds. With the release of mmo's as, in particular, EVE and SWG - both community driven and trying to realize a true 'world' - there was, in my view, just no way for single players games to compete.
But that view have during the latest years somehow changed. No doubt, both late mmo releases as well as upcoming does to a large degree aiming at another crowed than myself. Modern day game designs have taken a turn towards making 'games' as compared to believable 'worlds'. I'm sure that suits the general public rather well, but I do believe at the same time there are many with me feeling that the full potential of the mmo concept is currently not realized. And that concept was to me not about leveling your character through tons of generic quests, then hit the ‘end game’ where you begin to raid. No, it was about creating an open ended world where players would create their own adventures, own stories and, thus, their own content guided by a vision from the developers.
Now a days, I find myself spending more time in single player games as Witcher 1 & 2, Skyrim, X3, Stalker and the likes – games not too far off an open world concept, but with the big difference of I’m there alone.

That actually sounds pretty amazing. The attitude is simply perfect: we give you and big world, do what you want with it. |

Yup When it comes to casual mmorpgs, Rift does feel somewhat fresh compared to the rest. |

I don't know how it is now adays, but when EQ2 was released it was based on a dx8 engine. I.e. several of the graphical features was based on the CPU and not GPU. For instance, shadows were calculated using the comps processor and not on the graphic card, which led to almost no one could actually run the game on full settings. |

I can cope with quest based game play, but the lackluster world designs are so far beoynd the scope and idea of a mmorpg world. |

Huge improvement, no doubt. Especially in the first sector, there are a lot of vistas similar to the last pic; this update will sure bring enhanced realism to those. I'm very pleased that they continue to upgrade the graphics of FE. It actually starts to look real good. The newly added sun shafts brings a lot to the atmosphere. |

Some interesting news indeed! Hopefully they can pull this off within a reasonable time frame. |

Amazing how different peoples view of FE is. I think it is a splendid game. I mean; zombies, mutants, popping pills, shotguns... whats's not to like? |

Originally posted by Xondar123 Indeed! And that's just what I'm hoping for. FE sure is, in my view, a splendid game and the potential is insane. |

FE is actually really good with a great atmosphere. |

Space ships aside, Fallen Earth is not that far off to the atmosphere in Firefly. |

Ryzom is simply the best land based sandbox currently

Ryzom sure is one of a kind. More players, and this gem would really shine. |

Welcome Tryos! I just reactivated my account which have been on hold for about two years. I must say that Ryzom truly is a gem and holds up very well against current mmorpg titles. Certainly so if you appreciate to explore on your own and not being dictated by a pre-defined path with boring quests in your hand. |

Age of Conan jumps to #27 on Xfire (#6 MMO overall)

My experience is about the same as yours; played at launch, cancelled short thereafter due to bugs, lags etc. Just reactivated and playing on a new comp and have most settings maxed out on dx10 with mostly good fps. The game runs so much better and actually gives an impression of being in a good shape. Lets see if I can keep my enthusiasm this time around. |

I bought the game at release but cancelled soon there after as a combination of other games and a general feeling of unfinished. I got back three days ago and the game is in a completely different shape. As most others also tend to comment; there is certainly room for improvement in almost all aspects of DF, but, compared with other mmorpg´s, this is something different. The feeling of "you're on your own" and that only my skills alone will keep me alive is in this open world setting is tremendous! Even though I might join up with a clan eventually, beeing a looner in DF is sure an exciting experience, and more so than most other mmorpg's. Without sounding too much of a fanboy here, DF delivers that "virtual world" aspect that I've been looking for for quite some time. I know many of you are pretty fed up with the theme park and spoon feeding concept, and so am I. For the moment my cash will happily go to DF; both because I enjoy the game (world) and I would like to show my support towards the design concept in general. |

Despite some crashes and minor bugs (mostly server lag related), I enjoy myself. FE, even in its current shape, is absolutely worth a look for those looking for a mmo with slightly more focus on world and immersion than traditional linear questing. There are enough of innovation to keep me interested for now, and the post appoc setting is sure a breath of fresh air. I've been reading some dev interviews, and I encourage their focus and vision. They seem to acknowledge their niche and know how to develop it further. Well worth supporting! |

Actually the graphics have grown on me. My initial imperession was rather *meh*, but I eventually got sucked in to the atmosphere. My only real complain right now is the shadows, which are very low res, and the foliage could also need some work. FE is sure one of a kind MMO, with several unique features. They have actually tried to create a world as opposed to a theme park or a 'game'. And that's VERY good in my book. |
