Like: The cityscapes & environments

Dislike: The game's themeparky nature.

Apparently girls really like guys playing video games. Who'd have guessed?

*feels vindicated and plays some more*

But yeah, game marketing is awfully shallow though I imagine those girls don't mind making some money with simply walking around and getting attention. Reminds me of one of NOFX' bestest lyrics:

"Who the hell are you to tell me how to live?
You think I sell my body, I merely sell my time.
I ain't no Cinderella, I ain't waiting for no prince,
to save me, in fact until just now I was doing just fine.
And on and on ..."

"I know what degradation feels like I felt it on the floor,
at the factory where I worked long before,
I took control, now I answer to me.
The 50K I make this year will go anywhere I please.
Where's the problem?"

Keep telling yourself all that. I've been in both beta weekends personally, and haven't preordered or prepurchased.

Anyway, here's a screenshot of me at the Moa mount vendor. Wait ... what?!

No no.  You are one of the ones with valid concerns I know who is playing it.  I listen to you.  Like I said I can kind of tell or half tell with most.  I have no doubt you are in.  I also have no doubt you try just about everything anyways.  So thats a given.  There are also many more like you.

What Im saying is I dont buy ALL the comments from certain people here.  But you?  No you say what you want.  I'll read it.  I have no doubt you are playing GW2.  Im familiar with your posts.  Im also familiar with others.  Its SOME of the others I some what doubt.  Nor will I call anyone out.  Learned my lesson on that one.

Ah ok, that's cool CH.

I'm not so sure if I agree with you though. It's not like it's a general shitstorm like D3 had to endure during the public beta, or Swtor for that matter. I still think the amount of nay sayers are very few in the case of GW2, comparitively speaking. But I suspect that has a lot to do with the short supply of free beta keys to give uninvested players a try.

I felt a bit disconnected with my character but I think that had to do with the movement (a bit like jerking around a rag doll at the end of a 6 foot pole) and the storyline which feels awkward without choice; character creation and picking your background was awesome and promising but after picking the street urchin / commoner background and being called "The hero of Sheamore" within 10 minutes and then forced to betray a local gang leader to the authorities I kind of lost the link with the role I envisioned my char to have.

In broad terms: relying on premade content to entertain people has run its course in mmo land I think. Also it's much more production intensive to make compared to giving people the tools they need to provide eachother with a virtually unlimited amount of content.

It kind of baffles me AAA companies still resort to building dedicated rides which are only fun for a few times and don't fully exploit the fact that so many players are playing together in their worlds.

I kind of feel that the player made content belief is a bit of a silver bullet.  MA killed city of heroes for me and while there was some good content, it was mostly crap built to exploit the system.  Players will exploit if given the chance.

Sure, but they do that in any multiplayer game when they get the chance. As a dev it comes down on recognizing it in time and closing the holes.

Barely any chatter on the GW2 forums. They all must be playing, and I believe I know what thread you are talking about regarding being bored. Just because 1 or 2 threads pop up doesn't mean the "hype", which was created by the playerbase isn't real.

This is actually the first time I've check these forums in over a day because I've been busy playing GW2.

I assume those who claim to be bored aren't in the beta weekend.

Anyway back to it, have fun.

^this.  Actually I have been posting and reading forums tho too.  Not for lack of interest in the beta,  but because I'm applying every ounce of willpower I have not to get too deep into the areas I want to keep fresh for launch.  I hope they bring out the Asura soon, I have no interest in playing them at all so can do a LOT of beta testing with them.

Dont even come here right now.  Just enjoy your beta experience.  Since all the fans and pre purchasers are off playing the Beta the haters have taken it as a time to strike.  Ive been on the forums just long enough and often enough to take note of people.  And a lot of the people saying the game is lacking are the ones claiming so for weeks and months now with no evidence.

Now they are claiming they've played it.  Same people who said they werent interested and it was just going to be more of the same.  So I guess they pre purchased ( Ironic indeed) which I really dont think some of them did, and are taking this as an opportunity to say the game is......surprise surprise.......lacking.  Or boring.  Or grindy.

Or all the same crap they've been spewing for months or weeks.  They just took it as an oppurtunity to do it in full force this time.  One started it up with a thread.  " Oh look!  SEE!  SEE!  Its lacking!  It doesnt live up to the hype! " then another jumps on the band wagon and starts another thread and its just been all day.  I have serious doubts half these people have even played the thing, but instead are just claiming too.  I know some concerns are valid, but this is just wild.

Meanwhile they are free to bash it because most fans like yourself are playing the game and having a blast.  So enjoy it now guys.  Fans enjoy the game, people who dislike GW2 enjoy the forums.  Because both end on Monday.  All those GW2 players will come flooding back into the forums and you people wont enjoy the free hater aid you're sipping on in ease right now.

Keep telling yourself all that. I've been in both beta weekends personally, and haven't preordered or prepurchased.

I think their communication / marketing strategy and the game's corporate identity has been beyond top notch.

Their manifesto vid stood out for me. It's probably best sales pitch ever made in this industry. It's virtually impossible to not be moved by it.

I wasn't. I been following MMO Developer's and their marketing tactics for a long time now, and have gained the ability to see pass hype and marketing tricks like that video. I see pass all the marketing talk Anet has used for GW2. "GW2 has no grind!" "In GW2 the endgame starts at level 1!" "Dynamic Events allow players to change the world in ways never seen before in a MMO"...

That's amazing MMOExposed. You truly are an exposer of mmorpgs.

I didn't say that I didn't have my doubts about some of the things they promised but it's put together very well; the way it's paced, the zeal and emotion put into the voice over bits, the clever one liners ... all supported with great music and impressive scenic eyecandy and laced together with their signature art style. It's simply a very well done marketing pitch and I think it has won over a lot of people for their cause ... *coughs* ... game. (A long with for instance the class videos which were very appealing too).

@Those who think everyone said in the manifesto vid is true: Only partly. The bits about how GW2's combat is unlike anything we've played before is quite false. Also the part about there being no grind is iffy at best. Let alone the overall impression they serve you that this is a revolutionary mmorpg. edit: And the bit Atlan99 mentioned.

edit: When they are talking about other games they say:"The boss you killed respawns ten minutes later!" In most of the heart quests I found it didn't even take that long in GW2.

Color me indifferent as well. The game just does little for me. Watching the people who are going ape over this game like it's going to be a completely new experience reminds me so much of "Throwing rocks at cars" scene from the Bebe's breast's episode of South Park.

>CLICKY<

Hehe. To me a similar reference stood out.

Love your new sig by the way. Tell 'em, TC.

Thanks for breaking it down, Souldrainer. That was probably the most brain numbing youtube vid I ever attempted to watch.

Odd one, this. Anything I do in GW2 feels well-implemented, but I get the urge to do none of it, and feel no sense of a premise whatsoever to the whole thing.

So when I play it, it plays well, but when I log out, it's out of mind to the point that I don't even remember to give it a call... And then when I do remember, I mainly Hamlet-it-out. :P

To me this might be a symptom of the same lack of an overarching idea to the gameworld that's been ailing the MMO genre mainstream for years...

But that sounds like some preamble to a long-winded post and I'm going to spare you all that... for now. :)

Once again I believe you and others are use to hand holding in games. I mean no disrespect when I say that, but in say WoW for example, you were given quests from givers, they were displayed on the right hand side of your screen, and then you would look at your map and complete them getting a reward. You would also complete an area relevent to your level and press on to the next. This progression is what I think you are thinking of when you suggested "no sense of a premise".  You may have to change up your way of thinking and smash in a side of the "box" you are use to and make up a new premise.

You are the only one that can trigger your imagination and ArenaNet has given the pallet to assist you.

ANet just made the box even smaller, taking out anything that could be construed as inconvenient.  Hand-holding - yeah, GW2's got it in spades.  It also has the "quest helper" crap on the right hand side of the screen as it displays info on the scripted events found in the game.

It also shows just about everything on the map: NPC locations, heart quests, skill challenges, teleporters, even "undiscovered" points of interest.  LOL

Speaking of teleporting, fast-travel is unbelievably easy and common.  Even mailboxes have been streamlined out of the world, as everyone simply sends and recieves mail from whereever they are.  Easy-mode gameplay, taken to the extreme.

i dont know where you get the idea that inconveniences someohow makes  games harder. Do you really consider a challenge going back to a mailbox or walking back  to the other side of the map in 1 hour?

That isn't the point. He is merely outlining the absurd thinking that if you don't like GW2, it is because you are used to hand holding. It is absurd because GW2 has tons of hand holding.

True dat. (but the last bit is debatable.)

(Some of the) defenders should stop assuming things about others in an attempt to blame those players themselves for not enjoying the game so much. It sounds like they are instructing people about how to eat an apple. ("No you shouldn't peel it first! You are trying to eat it as a banana! I can tell you only eat bananas and this is an apple!").

I sign what someone said earlier: not all games can be for everyone and next to that: no game is without flaws.

I actually have had a lot of fun, though I think I'm playing it completely differently from you.  I find myself leaving a lot of hearts behind, and spent a lot of time screaming 'oh shit!' over mumble as I come running past my friend being chased by something scary, until we either manage to beat it down together, or he can finagle the monster away enough that I could be rezzed.

I'm pretty sure the other people int he mumble channel thought I was a ravening incompetent, though my excuse was and still is that being 4-5 levels behind can be kind of painful, especially when you're fighting champions and veterans. :(

It was fun though!  For me.  Oddly enough, I get the impression that if I was playing the same way you were, I might have been bored out of my mind too!  I tended to use hearts as a replacement for idling, certainly not as any sort of meaningful content.

Aye, maybe I need to try different things. But so far the staple world content isn't doing much for me. Even generic, quest based, incentivised content like in Swtor has felt more fun and rewarding (rewarding as in: "compelling").

its good that you clarified why the game was less immersive for you

- for me, what makes GW2 immersive is all the exploring you can do

Exactly!  People are so accustomed to the hand-holding that they are waiting to be led to the next point. Get out and look at everything and don't worry about events or anything unless you want to at that moment.

Don't get your hopes up about that one. I always loved exploring. I'd much prefer it if there wouldn't be any kind of hints and hearts on the map, actually. It's the content itself which I find lacking. They way how content is presented (guided or not) is a completely different matter.

The part in red kinda explains it all...lol..

Reminds me of an ealier post, where someone commented that the WvW takes 2 weeks, and then said "who has time for this" ...haha!!

Its just like I said before, many of todays gamers are spoiled and impatient, they want it all and they want it right this second.

No. I just want to feel immersed and experience actual excitement now and then when I play any kind of RPG. GW2 isn't doing that for me ... at all.

My point was, your comparing GW2 to games like Fallout NV, which is like comparing apples and oranges.

Then you use that false comparison to bash GW2, when they are not even the same game, at all. Basicaly, you want GW2 to be something it is not, its not the games fault, its you.

I wasn't comparing them.

I was only stating what I was going to do instead of playing the GW2 beta.

It could have been "doing the dishes" too.

Speaking of which ...

I'm sorry you feel that way!  No, seriously, legitimately sorry you do.

Thanks, MH. really appreciate your comments as always.

I'm not sure if it's possible for you to have fun in GW2, but I will say that I'm not totally surprised.  It's hard to enjoy a game when 1.  The basic design of it isn't really aimed towards you and 2.  You're sort of down on it ahead of time (Partly due to 1!)

True I always had my doubts whether this would be for me but sadly the game hasn't done much to take that skeptic stance away. (Apart from cities, sounds and atmosphere of inhabited places).

Though it's weird you were able to like Diablo 3 and other such games so much.

:o

I really dislike D3, at least the beta. I didn't buy it yet and probably won't (unless it sells for 20 bucks in a year or so). You must have mistaken me for someone else on this bit. No offense though.

I think maybe... maybe the problem is that if GW2 was NOT an MMO, but 'some other type of game where you shoul dnot compare it to any particular genre', you might be able to enjoy it, but because you want certain things out of an MMORPG that GW2 is not delivering, it gets massive negative MMO points from you.

Not sure. I simply want some challenge, excitement and depth to gameplay and to be immersed. Whether I am playing a mmorpg or a single player rpg, a themepark or a sandbox. So far GW2 hasn't done that much to draw me in on any of those particular reigns. Maybe it's like some people say and it's a case of mmorpg burnout, at least fantasy themepark burnout.

*slowly nods head*

That's exactly what I expect. Unless there are some stunning changes to the game at later levels that I am not aware of.

Swtor fell flat for me only at max level ... but by gods, despite having the incentive to write a blog about my GW2 beta experiences, something I really enjoy doing, I can't and won't force myself to play this game any longer. So here's my blog entry:

"An intensely shallow mmorpg in a very attractive package."

Thanks for the replies guys. I added your questions to the OP and rephrased some of my own.

Similar experience here. Hard to keep putting time in it somehow. At least in pve progression which is what I've been doing. Most of the heart events are just trying to do around 20 mobs some damage before they're dead (or walking around with picked up items, scratching your head on what to do with them, putting them down again when you see a mob respawn and fill that meter by killing mobs anyway).

I also still feel kind of disconected with my character. Might be the class (hunter) but suspecting it's simply the movement and fairly shallow combat. Loving the art and world design though.

I feel you man. Very mixed feelings here.

*picks up a rock and walks around with it, wondering what the hell he's doing*

*sees a mob respawn, drops rock, attacks mob*
