Can't say I'm particulary impressed over what I've seen the past two days I've been in the beta.  Character creation is shallow, with too few options and strongly reminded me of SWToR's lackluster character creation.  I've seen plenty of glitchy graphics, and I find the controls rather clunky, the cutscenes are well done except I find my character just sits or stands there, not speaking or moving like he's trapped in some sort of trance.   Most of all I really despise the combat.  The firearms have much too short a range (seriously, you have to be close enough to spit on something to shoot it with a pistol), and you are either being swarmed by mutliple mobs or being pounded by one or two big ones.    You pretty much have to resort to constant backpedalling to stay out of melee range which usually results in you bumbling into another group of mobs and having to fight off a bigger swarm.  Also, are you seriously telling me it takes ten shots from a pistol to take down a single zombie that's an arms length from me?

I do like the concept of the skill wheel rather than the traditional leveling system, and the voice overs are well done.  Other than that I can't really see anything in the game to interest me in buying it.  Glad I was able to get a free beta key rather than have to do a preorder.

For the last time.... just quit and move on.  Why type a book as to why you left?  NO ONE CARES.

If you don't care, why are you posting on this thread, let alone reading it?  If you don't care that someone cancelled their sub to a game, it stands to reason that you wouldn't be wasting your time browsing through such a thread.

All I have to say so far is that the story is a very tired cliche, the cutscenes are awful, the narration laughable, and every time I hear the narrator speak the game's title it makes me cringe its so bad.    Character customization is fair at best.  Two factions *yawn* with three races each which basically boil down to halfing, elf, wolf-man, or gnome, human, or monkey-man, and the wolf and monkey type race is male gender only.   There's only five face 'shapes', four face 'styles' and four hair styles.  You can tweak specific facial and body features, but it really doesn't make that big a difference once you get into the game.  Classes are the generic and boring 'warrior', 'rogue', 'mage', and 'cleric'.

Graphics are fair I suppose, I've seen worse, but I've also seen better.   But there seems to be quite a few grammar and punctuation errors in the text for quests and the like, so the game really could use more polish.  Character animations are stiff and unnatural.

Maybe the game will get better the further I get along, but for now I'm not terribly impressed...And did I mention how much I HATE the narration?

Is there a North American specific server?  Any North American servers that are RP friendly?  How much is the cost for a subscription?

What I don't understand is how you can be hostile and threatening the previous poster with bodily harm and then say he's 'hiding behind a computer'?   Especially when said previous poster didn't make any threatening statements or sound hostile in the least.   I don't see how you can be so judgemental in calling him/her a coward when you are the one blustering and making threats from behind your computer.   You make absolutely no sense, and just make yourself look like an idiot.

I'm not hiding behind a computer. I'm on a tablet, and I'm hiding in your daughter's closet!

A tablet is a computer isnt' it?  Unless yours is made out of stone and you are knocking away at it with a bronze chisel.

It's straight from Bedrock.

Well in that case I'm safe, I don't live in a stone hut, or a cave, so it's not my house you are in.

The fact that you see them as 8 year old girls is what is sick and twisted to me.

Sorry but they actually do look like underaged girls. Yeah lore and background story..blah blah.. is just an excuse to cover it up.

I'm happy that FFXIV is finally coming around and I'm liking the changes I've been reading about and may have to give it another look.  Just wish they hadn't gone and started to charge subscriptions again.  The changes the devs are putting forth show alot of potential, and I'll following the developments alot closer as Version 2.0 draws near.

That being said, I have to say I'm not all that thrilled about male Miqo'te and female Roegadyn.  I'd rahter they stayed as single gender races.  Instead I would like to see some completely new races added to the game.  I think that would add more variety and choice than simply making both genders available on all races.

People who think the game is dying must be playing Republic.

Last night,

Imperial fleet = 150

Republic fleet = 50

Game isn't dying, but my god is there a massive imbalance on a lot of the servers.

Everyone enjoys being evil I guess...Kinda makes sense to me.  All the years I spent growing up game characters were always some sort of hero, going through hardships and sacrifice to save the princess/kindgom/world ect.  Although games offer more choice now, playing as the Horde in WoW never made me feel as evil as playing a sith in TOR does.

I don't see the point in all these population threads honestly it's perfectly normal for MMOs to lose tons of subs during the first months. Very few MMOs have gained subs after the first months since what now WoW?

WoW right now is losing subs and a game like SWTOR who the devs have said took inspiration from WoW(a very big amount) to make would be foolish to think they won't lose subs from imitating old mechanics.

I agree.  While there are some interesting features in SWTOR, they made the game too much like WoW to make it truly stand apart.  If one gets tired of one, they are bound to get tired of the other.

Thing is Raids, Heroics/Falshpoints and Warzones do not interest me

SWG had at 90:

Player Housing / Cities

Entertainers

More involved and deeper crafting. SWTOR your comapnions do it for you - good for everyone but makes the real crafters redundant

Trading / setting up a shop

Creature Harvesting

Mission Terminals - These can be fun when getting both Imperial and rebel missions in same location and they they battle it out!

Invasions

Theme Parks - Rebel/Imperial/Jabba/Meat Lump/Death Troopers

Seasonal Events

Chronicles system

Space, space mining, building better space ships and components

Better REing

Collections system

Exploring everywhere and whenever you want

Levelling up howver you want - via mission terminals or the Legacy quest series or hunting creatures / NPCs around your level by visiting the planet

Beast Master, not only able to just control beasts, but create them as well.

SWTOR does not have any of the above in any meaningful way at max level  -That is a lot of stuff. People in SWG did not just stick around for the instances and PVP, they stayed to do some of the above stuff as well.

Basically you could do whatever you want when you want, in SWTOR you are restricted by the story.  Jedi Knights always get T7 to begin with, in SWG you could choose to get a droid R3 or Probot or R2 or Battle Droid or go for any creature from a Beast Master. Whatever many different storylines SWTOR has to give, you could have infinite with SWG.

To level to 50 you do not need to group up so is the same as KOTOR, but then you can get so many other games that give you a much better multiplayer experiences without paying a monthly fee, and Flashpoints are just more story based quests that require to group up.

SWTOR will be just like ME3 when it releases, you will be able to play single player and multiplayer without paying a monthly fee.

Why do you continiously compare SWG to SWTOR?   Just because they are both set in the Star Wars IP doesn't mean they are the same game.  They were developed by two different companies years apart from each other.  How does comparing one to the other make any sense?   That would be like comparing World of Warcraft to Lord of the RIngs Online because hey, they both have orcs, dwarves, elves, and wizards in them so they must be the same, right?  But in that case why can't you play muscial instruments and have housing in World of Warcraft?  Whine whine whine...

You really need to understand that they are not the same game and Bioware didn't set out to make SWG version 2.   Continiously pointing out that SWG had more content, a different crafting system and greater freedom when it came to leveling your character and so forth its pointless.  Who cares?   I'm sorry your game got shut down but you got to think;  how many years was SWG out?  How many expansions, and patches did they have?   What was the game like at launch compared to when it was shut down?  SWTOR is only a month old, I'm sure that Bioware will be adding plenty of features and content  in the years to come, maybe even some of the features you are frothing at the mouth over.   You need to get a grip and stop comparing apples to oranges.  It's not doing you or anyone any good, not to mention that it makes you sound more than a little obsessed...

I'm actually finding the dialog options to be quite limited, the standard three options; one good, one neutral, and one evil/selfish.   I remember having considerably more dialog options from more recent Bioware games like Dragon Age 1 & 2 and Mass Effect 1 & 2 so I'm really dissappointed that the VO's are not more in depth.   I realise that this would have added more production time, and costs to the project, but seriously, for a game that's hyping the VO's and story arcs as one of it's main draws I was expecting more from it.

I'm also finding alot of my character's dialog options and  responses to be rehashed over and over again, which is getting tedious.    My character always seems to ask the same questions about every quest, and no matter what my response is the outcome is pretty much always the same so I really don't see the point to them.   Obviously this is untrue when it comes to chosing light or dark options, but I have to completely agree with the OP that nothing my character does seems to impact the game world.   Your personal story changes somewhat, but I haven't found it has any lasting concequences.

I'm also overwhelmed by just how pathetic everyone else in the galaxy seems to be; Republic Forces, Planetary Security, Law Enforcement agencies, and civilians always seem to be understrength and in danger of complete collapse.  No one it seems is capable of doing anything for themselves, no matter how important or trivial the task may be.   Everything is broken and malfunctioning but no one seems to be able or willing to anything to fix the systems regardless of how vital the repairs are.  It completely shatters my immersion in the game when someone I met ten seconds ago tasks me to risk my neck to do the job they are supposed to be doing, or to deliver some vitally important piece of information, or to go kill gang members, pirates, Imperial agents, scavengers, or what not.   And it's not just a Republic problem, the Sith are also suffering the same lack of manpower, yet we are supposed to believe that they are capable of wiping out entire worlds in the Republic when they can't even deal with escaped slaves and failed apprentices occupying their most sacred temples on Korriban?

And the worst part of it all?  Even after you wipe everyone's noses and wipe their backsides for them, nothing's changed.  None of the quests  you did or choices you made in the VO's made the slightest difference.   All you have to look forward to is doing it again in the next quest hub.

I've always gone under the impression that reviews are supposed to be unbiased?  After reading this article and the article on patch 1.18 I've gotten the distinct impression that the 'reviewer' had already made up his mind that he didn't like the game before he did any sort of research for the articles.   I fully admit that the FFXIV launch was terrible and that SE dropped the ball right out of the starting gate, but it seems to me that the 'reviewer' focused exclusively on the negative aspects of the experience and even downplayed those parts of the game that are good.   Adam's 'sarcastic wit' strikes me as being 'smug arrogant jackass extrodinare'.  If Adam can't understand the concept of being impartial and giving an unbiased review, I think it's time he found a new line of work.   Writing a review isn't about pushing your personal views on people, and that's what his 'reviews' are all about.

For example he calls the gathering mini-games akin to torture.  What's wrong with the minigames?  If I'm going to play a class that's entire focus is gathering I'd like more than a simple 'one click harvest' method of gathering that most other MMO's employ.  Having a minigame requires I actually concentrate on what I'm doing.  Yes, for someone who's mindless or simply wanting constant action then yes, I'm sure it's boring, in which case maybe a gathering type class isn't the class you should be playing.  Adam thinks they are torture, that's his opinion, I don't care what his opinion is, I care whether or not the game is improving and worth checking out again, and I can't trust his review to give me the information I need.

I beg to differ. Many books take year's to wright, some a lifetime. The vast majority in sale's is usually not always, when a book or game is released. That's when the lion's share of the money is made. I'm would bet the profit margin on successful title is something almost all of us would salivate over.

As far as title's go that don't sell well... Well heck you took a chance and you didn't make it, just like any other kind of industry.

A stinker is a stinker and should lose capital, just like any other product. At least with material product's if something's a stinker you can usually get a refund.

Risk versus reward right?

The entertainment industry as a whole is one of the most lucrative businesses period.

But in our society it's never enough.

Alright, I can concede that writing a book takes alot of effort and can take a long time to write depending who you are.  Not everyone can write a book every couple of months like Stephen King and have constant best sellers.   But I can tell you that profit margins from writing a book aren't the greatest.   I've actually looked into it and for a book to be classified as a 'best seller' only has to sell ten thousand copies in my country.   The author recieves a royalty (which is normally based on how well they are known or success of their previous work), then normally only recieves a couple of dollars per book sold, so it's not exactly something to 'salivate over'.

But it's all subjective depending on your point of view.   So no, I cannot say you are wrong.

As for stinkers being stinkers, yes.  By all means they should lose money.   A poor product is a poor product.  But that doesn't mean even poor games should be pirated.  And well, if it's a stinker the resale value isn't going to be high anyway.

As for the greed of westren society or society in general...Meh...Don't get me started.

No, I imagine that second hand book sales do hurt authors and publishers.   But I don't think we are talking nearly the same volume of sales when you compare used video games to used books.   Really this is a whole different topic because you have to look at a lot of different factors such as writing a book doesn't cost alot of money compared to designing and programming a game.

 I beg to differ:

On which point?  That used video game sales vastly outnumber used book sales?  Or that video games cost more to develp and publish than writing a book?  Or that banning the sale of used books is a whole different topic?

Your one of the one's talkining sense.

Piracy is wrong, it's theft plain and simple.

I have a problem when people consider buying, selling or trading, legally purchased game's to be on the same level as pirating.

Ok, I don't think I've said that selling/buying new games is illegal, I just pointed out that by buying used games from companies like Gamestop means that the developer doesn't make any money from the transaction, which to me is wrong.    I'm putting the blame for such actions on companies like Gamestop who have built their buisness model delibrately to exclude the game developers and publishers.  Charging for second hand DLC is the game developers fighting back.

I'm not saying you can't sell your games, you bought them, they are yours.   Am I saying I would rather people paid the extra five dollars for the new game rather than buy the used copy?  Yes.   Who makes the games;  Gamestop or the developers?  Who would you rather see making profits?  I don't know about those who read these forums, but I'd rather see the developers get it.  They are the ones who make us the games.

But why should the gaming industry be treated differently then any other?

You can go to a bookstore and buy a second hand book. The author and the publisher get nothing, they lose the sale of a new book.

Should we ban the sale of used books?

When did I ever say it was fair to the developers or that pirating is okay? I didn't.

But if someone pirates a game, the developers aren't losing money, they just aren't making it from the person... who arguably would not have even paid for the game. In other words, said persons pirate the game, or they don't... either way the developers neither make nor lose money from these people, because they were never potential customers in the first place.

Stealing software isn't like stealing a tangible physical good. Sure there was effort in making the original piece of software, but replication of said final software is arguably free and near infinite. Stealing a physical good on the other hand does incurr an actual loss, because that physical product took resources to duplicate, so it's a loss in inventory.

Again, I'm in no way defending or encouraging piracy. Rather simply pointing out that the entire premise that piracy actually costs developers money is nonsense. The only way piracy costs developers anything, is in their frivilous attempts to add copy protection, which will always be cracked.

The sad truth is that the intellectual property related industries use piracy as a scape goat for poor sales of low quality products that are priced far too high for what most would be willing to pay.

If someone does pirate a game then yes, developers loose money.   Saying that the only people who pirate games are those who wouldn't buy them to begin with is nonsense.   Naturally people will gravitate toward the 'easy' or 'free' option.   Seriously, what's easier; downloading it illegally off the net, or going to the store and purchasing it?   People pirate simply because they can do so.  If there is something in place like a DLC to discourage pirating a game then it's entirely possible they might buy it instead.

I honestly can't believe that you feel piracy is a non issue when it comes to revenue loss.  Hell if only ten percent of pirated versions of a game were actually purchased rather than stolen  think of how much revenue that represents.

When you get done here could you please work on world hunger, racism, and cancer. Because you know going on about piracy not only steered this whole conversation in the wrong direction but it's absolutely asinine to put that as a major factor for DLC. What you do is, check this out, is call that company and ask them why they are doing that. Do you think the guy is going to give you a list like is being compiled here? Or a more comprehensive list that actually makes sense, like, they just want to make money off suckers who want to pay the money.

And I can promise you there isnt a guy sitting at a computer that yells " CRAP THERE GOES ANOTHER! " each and every time some website downloads their game for free ( pirated ).

Oh gee, I don't know if I can fit fighting world hunger in my schedule, or cancer (I'm not a doctor).  I'm already so busy trying to stop global warming, helping Scotland Yard figure out who Jack the Ripper actually was, and solving the secret of how they get the caramel into the caramilk bar.   But I'll take it under advisement.   I can't do much about racism though...Haters are gonna hate no matter what you say.

And yes, game publishers do have guys that sit at the computer and tracks illegal downloads.  They are called lawyers...

 You in the industry?

You sound very biased.

Every kind of business has a risk on investment. And most have to deal with theft of one type or another. The entertainment industry (including software) has one hell of a profit margin. I'm sure that the industry price's allow for loss's do to theft.

When you start dictating that your customer's can't sell their fully purchased and registered product's, well that's just going a little to far. Just because it's an electronic product and it didn't require any raw materials. It shouldn't make it exempt of the free market.

I have 10's of thousands of dollar's wrapped up in CAD-CAM software and I can sell my payed for and registered copies.

What makes the game industry so different from any other?

No, I'm not in the industry and truth be told I don't have an shred of programming skill.  I'm not related to the industry in any way shape or form.   Incidently I've never worked for a retailer like Gamestop  either.   Am I biased?  I think everyone's biased to a degree, I just happen to think that piracy is wrong, very wrong.   And the worst part is that people come up with all sorts of lame excuses to justify doing something they know is wrong.   I guess I am upset about the unfairness of it.   The developers work hard to make the games, they deserve to reap the rewards for it.    Pirates and companies like Gamestop cheat developers out of their revenue.

Lost revenue means less money to develop new games, which leads to less innovation, less creativity, and more of having the same old titles put out year after year with nothing more than a fresh coat of paint.  I want to see the medium's boundaires pushed to it's limits.  I want to see how far it can go.  I want to see something new!   Is that wrong?
