I thought Diablo 2 was too easy. The first game was just right.

But somewhere around the year 2000 all games became easier and easier, I am not sure why. I guess it had something to do with computers being in everyones home and EA and Activision wanting as many potential players as possible.

It made playing a lot less fun. Normal today meant easy ten years ago and if this will go on ypou will soon be able to play in your sleep.

But this is not really just diablo, it is all games. It is just easier to see in follow ups on old games.

I am more worried that playing it on "hell" will be too easy though.

I can't call it a success because I can still barely believe those numbers, any chatbox I go most people have played SW:TOR and then quit, even my real friends have and people still playing complain servers feel empty. I don't know how they could have retained 1.7m of 2m. I've probably almost talked to 300k who dropped it.

As far as I am aware that 1.7mil number was released during the 'free month' after the release. Not sure if it was even relesed this year.

I am not planning to log in anytime in the future either, I am playing X-COM (yes the 15 year old game), which has much more replayability. Even the 1993 Wing Commander is more fun than STO end game...

the only reason i am not uninstalling is to see what they will come up in 6 months (I have lots of free space on my HDD)

This will be my last post with this game, its good to kill a few days/weeks while leveling up. Not worth spending any more time/money after reaching level cap. Cryptic is milking the Star Trek name as much as they can...sad.

I hear someone is making a new xcom style game called xenonauts (i think) in response to the let down of an fps that is using the name.  Could be released sometime this year

SW:TOR is considered a success only 1.5 months after release?

I was just wondering that, especially since i seriously doubt that they've made anywhere near their development costs back yet.

I am a long time MMO player and not too long ago I tried the 14 day trial of EvE and tried really hard to get into it but just couldn't. The whole space idea and the player run economy look so much fun and I think I would have a blast getting into but the actual gameplay just isn't fun. The mining is sitting in one spot for 5 minuites while you mine, that isn't exciting at all. Even the combat is just selecting a red dot, selecting attack and waiting untill they die. Maybe it is just that I am not patient enough for EvE but I keep trying to get into and it is so hard, mainly because the gameplay isn't fun.

Any EvE players have advice of when/if/how this gets less boring or do you just need extreme patience to enjoy this game?

I'm with you.  Eve should be my perfect mmo, but it isn't.

I didn't mind mining in small doses.  But the fact that everyting in combat happens 'over there' I didn't like either.

Since you didn't like mining to make your isk did you try other things.  Missions or exploring for starters?

Also did you try the pvp? One of eves big pulls is you can do his from the start and as far as i know is the big 'action' side of the game.

Having seen what gets sold as mmo's currentlly(both mainstream and indie) if I were so inclined and had vast bundles of cash sitting around doing nothing I think I would be better off starting my own studio than investing in someone elses.

The only sure method of getting good sandbox games back is to stop paying for crappy themeparks.

As a customer base, we can't keep supporting these companies and their subpar games with our cash and expect changes. If developers can continue to spend a minimal amount of investment on developing for quick box sales, why would they bother with anything more?

Don't want crap? Stop paying for crap.

That's what I did and if more people would jump onboard instead of throwing cash around at the latest over-hyped half-a** project like crazed crack junkies, perhaps things will change.

Bethesda? Perhaps, but don't hold your breath. They'll most likely take the quick and easy way out too, fast box sales.

Unfortunately a fool and there money etc. same goes for things like drm.

In game terms it seems like companies now think that people are going to buy there game anyway so why bother making it good coughbiowarecough.  Don't see it changing anytime soon.

D&D over lotro anytime for me, because it does require some actual thining to play.  It has a complex skill system with some half way decent twitch based combat that can require th use of actual tactics.  However it is so heavily instanced that it was never worth a sub.  Also once u get past a certain level u are required to group and therefore have a lot of extra time to play(can easily be 2 hrs for one dungeon).

LOTRO I subbed to for a couple of months and found it a bland, boring wow clone.  I liked that it was set in the book ip rather than the film, but never knew why they set a childrens game in that ip.  Also really didn't like that there was no character customisation in either look or skills, making it feel more like middle earth world with every character bieng played by Yul brynner rather than a proper lord of the rings rpg.

It's a decent FTP game.  It was terrible as a pay game, at launch.  If it had released as-is, it would have done much better.

I hit features that TOR doesn't have, and laugh at how Bioware got away with doing it.

I can tell it's still easy to burn out on STO with too much play, so the best move is not to do it!  That's the best part of it's FTP setup, you don't feel a need to maximize your subscription playtime and money.

The ground combat is still full of lagtime, so there's plenty that's still broken about the game.

Yes I can see that it would be easy to burn out on it. I play it to satisfy my craving for some sci fi and play it as a side game. Its a fun game as long as you dont over do it.

, but still think it's an almost total mess

I never ever EVER buy the collector's edition for ANY video game. I have yet to find one that's actually worth it.

"And after I jump back into my own game to clean up all of the optional stuff I didn't do, I sense I'll want even more. And yes, so will you."

Lies. Not a bad game, but when I put it down, I didn't miss it. A score of 9...really? And then the 'press' gets idignant and offended when people suspect they're being paid for favorable reviews.

Review is simply his opinion.

Didnt you know? if anyone rates a game you dont like higher than you think it should get, they were paid off.

Its funny, because more people on teh internet sound loike they were paid to slam a game for no reason to to say its better than it is.

Sorry, but no. You can spin the 'opinion' card as much as you like, but when the writers start saying things like "Yes you will like it, too" which is essentially what he meant by the last line, then you cross the line past opinion.

Further, I really don't care for the argument that opinions can't be wrong in the first place. I could give you a lot of really shitty 'opinions' made throughout history that were terrible and deserve to be pointed out for it. So, yes, when suddenly every piece of crap game by a big company gets a 9/10 standard, without any questions asked, people have the right to question the validity of these reviews. If you're content to be a lemming, then by all means, have at it.

Personally I would have given Amalur a 6, 6.5 at the most. Had I seen something higher than that, I wouldn't have been surprised. But, seeing as a 10 is unofficially accepted is "unachievable," that leaves 9 as something just short of perfection. There are very few games that deserve that these days, and yet nearly all of them are getting it, provided the studio that made it is rolling in money.

Well said.

Unlikely.

From what I've seen looks more along the lines of your standard f2p grinder with a slightly vampire/twilight look.  But not a lot of info available that i've found.

For a sandbox vampire mmo I think you may have to wait for ccp's white wolf offering.

Might be able to find some in the forums here too.

But you'd think they could at least make them a sensible size.

My 2 cents on the Odyssey/Bortas...

I simply cannot stress enough how poorly designed and written the mission to obtain these ships is.  This has got to be the most amateur work out of Cryptic yet.  The mission itself is so farbeyond stupid that they should just give you the ship token when you log in.  Far and away the absolute worst piece of mission/quest content I have ever seen in a MMO.  I cannot believe someone at Cryptic got paid real money to write this.  It is so bad, I would not even have used the mission since the ship is free.  To say it read like a 5 year old wrote it is being kind.

Anyway, the mission stinks.  As for the ships themselves, I do think the designs they chose were good ones.  The Odyssey is a fine looking ship.  I was not all that sure about it when the design won the contest, but seeing it in game now, I have to say I enjoy the look.  They did manage to give attention to detail so my hat is off to them on translating the ship design from paper to game.

In terms of performance, I cannot say I am all that impressed by it.  The turn rate is just dreadful and to be honest, the Universal Bridge stations simply do nothing for it in my opinion.  I can see my Science captains getting the most out of it, but for Tacticals and Engineers I will definitely be keeping this in drydock and sticking with Escorts and Sovereign.  The lack of the Universal Ensign slot makes the Lt. Commander station less useful.  I wound up using the stations just like I do my Sovereign and Galaxy Dreadnaught, so unless I want to have a different looking ship, I will not be using the Odyssey.  It is definitely nice to have as a free ship though, so take it for what it is worth.

I will not even get started on how badly designed the Bridge is for the Odyssey either.  It is overwhelmingly apparent that there will be a "Odyssey Bridge/Interior" pack in the C-store along with a far better version of the ship next month.

I actually thought the Bortas was better.  I like the 4 tactical consoles and the slow turn rate keeps it from being too overpowered.  I did not get a chance to play it too much last night but will mess around with it some more over the weekend.

Overall I did not find either of these ships to be all that great.  I have no doubt this is deliberate to entice players to buy the "good" versions in the C-Store.

Oh, and one last thing... if anyone from Cryptic actually reads these .... please, please, please, please stop putting weapon firing points on NACELLES!!

Would like to second these two points.

Not just mmo's, for example dragon age origins(am using it as by bioware too) wouldn't tax the IQ of a frozen chicken.

Also don't forget the movies.  Star Trek XI for example there.

The arguments are along the lines of easy sells,  as long as it's easy enough the devs/publishers don't need to put as much effort into making it and so can add a little extra profit margin.

Same thing for as long as it looks good enough people will pay so why bother.

There's also the me, me, me, know, know, know.

Also don't forget the pop psychology of rewarding people for coming in last(or in this case rewarding you for being an idiot).

And there's always the argument that the society is being dumbed down in general for whatever reason.

Ultimately I think you are going to just have to put up with things for the jackass, add generation.

weirdly you could say sto.  Seems to fit most of that list(maybe not the crafting).  Probably only something to last you until you find something better though.

Also have you tried anarchy online?

Sounds interesting but not enough information on those two sites to tell if it seems good or not.

There's anarchy online, but it's rather old and not really sure if the random 'dungeons' will fit the bill(you'd have to try it)

Also possibly star trek online with it's exploration side, but  not played it long enough to tell you what that's like

They describe this feature as going to the Dark Side. This might look like trolling but it isn't this is from a genuine christian youtube channel. I think this is a good thing shows Bioware cares about all gammers.
Apparently some christian gamers and parents dont want this feature implemented.
