Voted "It could have been better".

Some personal stories are absolutely phenomenal, others kind of dragged. A few started to pick up about halfway through (my Norn) but prior to that I wasn't interested enough to pay much attention. I ended up hitting the skip button a few times. Then things got dramatic and I was interested again.

If you consider "WTS/B" spam a community environment, I'm glad it's gone.
That's a really wierd combination of classes. And weapons, for that matter.

If they give the client away its F2P and not B2P, simple really.

Not going to happen.

Can I quote you on that?

Sure thing - I'm 100% confident on this based on ANet and GW1.

The game wasn't designed for F2P nor will it ever be. They have other ways to make money.

So when Mike O'Brien said,

"I know none of this is new; the original Guild Wars also had microtransactions. But microtransactions were an afterthought in Guild Wars, whereas with Guild Wars 2, we had an opportunity to integrate the microtransaction system from the ground up"

http://www.arena.net/blog/mike-obrien-on-microtransactions-in-guild-wars-2

He did not think it would be the main source of ongoing funding to improve the game? Gems are all that matter from now on believe me.

That....really has nothing to do with anything at all. He stated only that microtransactions were a part of the plan, nowhere does he say it's their main source of revenue. As population settles, the people willing to purchase gems and sell them for gold will gradually decline, but the most stable source of income being the boxes, something that will rise exponentially once several expansions are out for the game all with their own box cost. That's what they're counting on, and that's why they're not just going to get rid of it.

Puting it on sale however, is different, and something they did often with GW1.

Many players stopped using chat and removed that  chat tab and focus 100% on guild chat.

Smart players join guilds and ignore the PUG crud.

I take offence to the green statement. But I support your right to have this narrow minded view.

To me is sounds just like high-school and listening to a group of "we-are-better-than-you" snobs.

I also think it is this attitude promotes anti-social behavior.

My 2 cents, take it or leave it on the floor where it was found.

Gasp! Someone pointed out that in order to be social in an mmo, you join a social experience (guilds), and avoiding it while complaining that the game is anti-social is stupid. They are clearly an elitist snob.

"Pointing out" =/= calling people dumb.

Urging the participation in a guild to enhance the "social experiance" would be a better choice. When you approach it the way the OP does, you might just stick with "you are playing, this game ANet advertised as Play-How-You-Want, wrong".

Your statement seems to imply that the ONLY social aspect of MMOs comes through a guild. Again, arguably a "narrow minded" view.

I was not part of ANY of the cliques ot my high school. Not a "Jock", "Redneck", "Stoner", "Prep", or any of the other "guilds"...You know what it got me in the end of it all?.....I knew all my classmates, and they voted me "Most Original".

But I am old and come from a different time.

Meh

Edit: Furthermore, I would argue that the single most UN-social manuver, is to turn off chat, unless ofcourse you socialize through telepathy.

Arguable indeed since there's nothing narrow-minded about it. A fact is not narrow-minded, it exists regardless of whether you like it or not. This is not the day and age of Ultima or Everquest anymore, if you can't accept that, leave the MMOs alone. It's not going to change. Ever. Social interaction is no longer required, it is offered, that offering coming in the form of guilds and gatherings like it. If you want social interaction, you seek those forums out, and if you don't then you have no right to complain that no one is talking to you. Turning chat off is not merely a means of staying reclusive, it also means avoiding trolls, stupid world chat, drama and gold sellers. I would argue that it is your view that is the narrow one, and I'd do so effectively.

As a backer of the Astronaut MMO, I am regretting it. They are worse at communicating then most Developers. Still have not had word one on any of the extras they promised, just a lot of “I have something big to tell you guys next week!” and then no post for 2 Month+.

And this is exactly why as popular as Kickstarter is, 10 years from now people will look back at it and laugh, "I can't believe anyone actually fell for that."

Was really hoping the petitions could do something, oh well hope they can produce another game like this eventually.

It is over as far as NC Soft goes, but it may not be for the game,  if they sell it , which is what the main campaign is aiming for, not for NC Soft to reverse the decisoin, which they knew will not happen.

Not going to happen. They had a lot less to lose from selling Tabula Rasa than they do by selling off the CoH IP, and they didn't even do that much. With CoH, they had already looked and planned for CoH2 and a movie, which shows they were pretty invested in the franchise at one point. What happened recently is anyone's guess, but the overall subs didn't dip very far post F2P conversion. It sounds more like internal politics and less like money, which everyone unfairly assumes is the reason anything ever happens.

It's more likely NCSoft will sit on the IP forever "just in case" they decide to do something with it. They may never, but if anyone else wants to, they'd have to pay NCSoft fees for the priviledge.

Paragon Studios and NC Soft are still in discussions of what will happen to the game. They have not said they will not sell it yet, but at least they are considering the option.

I've yet to see any information anywhere that says they are in talks and considering anything. The only information I've found is that the studio, Paragon Studios, is being dissolved. Gone entirely. And despite any supposed talks, if they're having any, they've come out and set an actual date the game closes. None of that sounds like they're considering other options. If you're referring to protests and staff of PS trying to convince them otherwise, that's not 'talks', which would suggest negotiating, that's just plees for help. I'd like it to be true as much as the next person though, so if you have source links for any negotiating going on behind the scenes, you should post it in here.

First off here:

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=296759

[Admin] Alpha Wolf: Sorry guys but I don't have any new update. I know Paragon management is having discussion with ncsoft and investors. Continue get people to sign online petitions, post on game forums, and just continue to make noises so ncsoft cannot ignore players.

http://thorsassassin.com/2012/09/28/paragon-community-dinner-and-hope/

There is a movement in the professional gaming world to save the game in some form or fashion but the process is complicated and involves several key elements to succeed. It was encouraging to hear the developers passion for the game. Their sense of pride in our community for our efforts thus far. Our resolve. Speaking with Melissa ‘Warwitch’ Bianco, Matt ‘Positron’ Miller and Brian Clayton gave me a sense of pride as well. They are all as invested in this game or more so than we are and they want it to be saved. Through the night I did get one strong message from all three and that is:

“Keep the positivity going for the SaveCoh campaign. Don’t let ourselves be pulled into aggressive tactics or negativity towards NCSoft, they are listening and we DO have their attention. Keep up the good fight!”

Thanks for posting that. I knew about the dinner thing but wasn't aware it included portions of decision-makers as well. It's nice that they've let people know the petition is making some impact. There goes the naysayers.

Meh people complaining. Yeah alot people liked it but didnt support it. Its like grocery store, It wont last long if people just take stuff for free and not pay.

We were paying, I just renewed a 6 month contract.

STOP  ASSUMING PEOPLE!

YOU paid. What about thousands of other? Doubt so even if they say "Im hard-core fan and i paid just 1k for something". And the facts are already out, no profit = no game.

The game was making a profit, otherwise Paragon Studios would not bother with trying to save/sell it. Why would any one sell it if it was not making a profit? You just assume it is being shut down because it was making no profit, well you are WRONG

The importance of saving COH is bigger than the game itself. The game may have been released 8 years but it was only converted to F2P last year, which is no simple thing. For them to shut the game down now, just kills any longevity any F2P/B2P etc type game has.

If City of Heroes shuts down, I am not putting any more time into MMOs, especially free to play ones and Nc Soft ones for certain, as now they can shut down after about a year.

If City of Heroes shut down last year, instead of going F2P, we may have wondered why they didn't turn it F2P, but certainly would not leave doubt in peoples minds of how long a game will last.

Before COH was announced to close, I would say there will be a 30% chance of SWTOR shutting down in 2013, following its change to F2P, but now after COH has shut down, I say SWTOR has a 90% chance of being shut down in 2013. They say the game needs 500K subs to break even, but it does not have that now, so they hope that millions will play but get at least 500K subs. The reason why most quit was that they did not want to pay, and I do not see people paying much after it goes F2P, so now its chances of closure next year are now extremely high.

I have seen plenty of positive posts about GW2, as it is free, and people do not need to spend any money in the store, yet COH needed people to spend in the store.

Even if GW2 has millions of people, if none are spending in the store, then that is still $0. No profit = no game

With sub based games, you know the game is getting money, and you know it will last, which is why WOW will still succeed. It is popular, still has millions of players ALL paying, it is safe and secure and no worries of getting shut down.

You're extrapolating from false information and it's letting your imagination run wild. For one, I sort of doubt you're in a position to say what % chance SWToR has of going down, whether or not I agree with you (which I sort of do, but am still not going to put it forward as valid information). Guild Wars 1/2 is run by Arena Net, who while a subsidiary of NCSoft, is not ~actually~ NCSoft. Paragon Studios is a wholly owned subsidiary, NCSoft has the right to dissolve them. Remember that Paragon Studios actually started as NC NorthCal, before given a title and dedicated to CoX. They're still NCSoft, though. This is not the same situation as say EA with Bioware; EA purchased Bioware by buying out a partnership in the works and in essence acquired the company as part of its own, like the underhanded little testicles they are. Even if SWToR does close down and Bioware goes kaput, that still puts them in a different position than Anet's relationship with NCSoft, which is why Anet is able to say that so long as anyone wants to play GW1 it will still be there.

However yes, you are right, CoX was still making a profit. May not have been a huge one, but they've been averaging between 7-8million per quarter, which is a hell of a lot more than many games still going run on. If they really wanted to, they could have just held off on updates until they accrued whatever financial comfort they felt necessary before investing in the manpower, but NCSoft didn't even consider it. They just want to wash their hands of the whole thing.

I have a friend that still plays TSW and he complains about the same thing. Has been trying for a while now to get me to come play with him but, I can't justify a sub for anything at this point, least of all a game I found a lot of fault in.

That said, TSW has some very unique systems that I think people find interesting, even if they're not finding it the kind of game you sub to long-term. I'm expecting a F2P announcement sometime very soon and, when that happens, I'm pretty confidence both the population and the community for TSW will finally begin to blossom.

This is like saying every box game out there will let you play it for free since they can make money through DLC.

It's a different pricing formula. F2P is not going to happen. They're already far more profitable than they expected to be, and with every new expansion that number will continue to rise just like GW1.

Went through all 4 paths of TA, CM and two paths of HoTW yesterday without any wipes and no deaths on my part, very few on the part of others. However, I was with my guild, who are very good at this kind of thing. We had food buffs, everyone brought support skills (NEVER underestimate Warrior Banners) and we read up before-hand on what other people faced in those dungeons.

In PUG groups, I never have that kind of luck. Dungeons are meant to be super difficult, and that's part of my gripe. While yeah, I nailed it with a really goot 'leet' group, I don't like that that's what it took to enjoy the dungeons. But then again, if you make them easier thnn people like that will be bored and left out...it's a difficult thing to find a balance on. My main gripe is that dungeon bosses take too long to kill; once you figure out the pattern and allow some elbow room for the occasional deviation from it (bosses like to get tricky) it's pretty much just waiting for it to die and, in some cases, the wait is quite long. Like, pop open that mp3 playlist, long.

Anyway, if you're going into a dungeon people, PLEASE TAKE HEED OF THE FOLLOWING:

1 and most important) ALL CLASSES HAVE SUPPORT SKILLS. BRING THEM. That mean Warriors should have their banners. Guardians need their party boon skills. If you see a Mesmer without Feedback, Null Field and Time Warp, smack them (and also smack the fields as they'll aoe chaos armor everyone). Necros should have minimum 3 "dark" combo Wells (when slapped, they aoe blind). Thieves have aoe blinds and poisons for a reason (poison reduces amount enemies can heal drastically). Elementalists and Engineers are self-explanatory, and finally Rangers need their spirits.

2) Food and potion buffs make a HUGE difference. I typically go in with Mango Pie, +70 vitality and constant Regeneration buff. Additionally, there are vendors all over Tyria that offer consumables that stack with food buffs, including one underwater dude in Bloodtide somewhere that sells two orbs: one is a stack of 5 Fury for 30 minutes, the other is a stack of 5 Regeneration for 30 minutes. Buy some, and if you feel like you're having trouble, pop one.

3) Even scaled down, gear and level matters. A level 80 Mesmer in great gear scaled down to 35 will still have more hp, defense and power than a level 35 Warrior, so if you can't manage it, come back to it when you're stronger.

Bottom line, those kamikaze "die and run back" strategies are not part of the game. They're an option, but that's not one you should be relying on, as evidenced by the fact that Anet is steadily removing Waypoints popping up throughout the dungeon so that by the time you run back, the bosses are back to full. If that's your only way of winning, you're doing something wrong.

By the way -   I just wanted to point out that, to the people complaining that not enough is explained, that too much has to be found out on your own, this is the way MMOs have worked classically. Information was never spoon-fed, people figured things out the hard way, then that knowledge was passed on through word of mouth, strategy guides, forum posts, and later wikis. This is exactly what a lot of you have been wanting for a while now, so complaining about it now is a bit ironic.

Actually, you're in Australia.

Nope. I don't like anymore software on my computer than is absolutely necessary.
Mmm....I don't think Borderlands would offer anything games like Firefall wouldn't beyond its unique characters or storyline. I think we're finally starting to see that oversaturation of MMOs die down (on our side of the world, at least), I wouldn't want to see that pick up again just because they could. It'd have to be something very different and unique, something to separate itself from the competition, at which point it probably wouldn't be Borderlands anymore.

No one is more to blame for a lack of community than the people complaining about a lack of community. Everyone is looking for it, but very few do so actively; if you make the effort to reach out you may be pleasantly surprised to find people just waiting to get to know you, and thus play with you. That games allow a solo experience doesn't mean that's an experience that's forced on you, rather that the opposite is no longer an obligation.

To those that say that's not a good thing, think about that for a moment. Is a friend you've made really a friend if they're only your friend because they have to be?

The loot wasn't nerfed, you now get twice the tokens the first time you complete a path than you did before to compensate for needing to complete the path before you get the tokens, with tokens as rare drops an incoming update. So actually, you're getting more. 2 hours of work with a good group got me all 3 paths of TA and 180 tokens. That was more than I'd gotten in days prior from people just farming the beginning bosses over and over. If you were talking about getting rich and going up 10+ levels from said farming, common sense would tell you that wasn't working as intended.

Wow really? I can't disagree more. TL2 is a great game and worth the price a lot but better than D3..no...

You are stuck to a build,  there will be optimal build soon.. it's 100% solo i will never go online since it's open bnet. so It will be full of hackers withing 2 weeks.

Gear is way too easy to get, everything in this game is easy. You level fast.

They did a lot of great things, phase events are full as hell , but it doesnt require any kiting or challenge at all. It will never be better than d3

Stop playing on easy mode. That you think Vet/Elite don't require kiting (let alone hardcore mode with perma death) leads me to believe you either aren't actually playing and going off what you've read, or playing on normal and expecting it to torture you. As for optimal builds, even at it's worse possibility, it's still better than having your skills chosen for you. You're only stuck on a build for now, the game is moddable and just like TL1, there will be a respec mod within a day of the kit's release. It's one of the first things I'll be downloading, definitely.
