Depends on what avenue you want to take for your moneymaking.

There are some quests you could do. Seeing spots nets you 3k for every four ladybug wings you can turn up from Ladybugs in East Ronfaure (S), also Tiger's Teeth that nets you about 2.1k for every three black tiger fangs you can farm off of Tigers pretty much anywhere but most highly concentrated in Batallia Downs. There are also the obvious quests, teleport quests, Warp I & II, ninjutsu, etc, but that depends on you making sure you're never going to level those jobs, and usually people level ninja as a subjob and black mage to at least 17 for Warp.

As for farming, there are alot of profitable options I know of at least on my server. The fairly obvious suggestions are grain seeds from saplings or blood from leeches in places like the marshlands. My farming area of choice when I have some free time is to just do laps around the Champaign farming lizards, raptors, and cockatrice. Cockatrice drop giant bird feathers and meat, each sell pretty well in stacks, lizards drop tails and skins, which don't sell for a great deal, but gil is gil, and raptors drop skins of their own, which sell for a pretty good amount in stacks. The only problems would be a so-so drop rate but if you have time to spare, some patience, and the ability to survive running around the Champaign for a few hours farming mostly everything in site, you can rack up a good amount of gil from all the items combined.

Fishing isn't a terrible way to get some profit as well, you'll just have to work on your skill a bit before you get to more profitable fish, but from what friends tell me it's well worth it. And of course you could do what alot of lazy people do and create secondary characters to quest spells, ninjutsu, rare items, and other such things, to get alot of gil without the fear of having to buy it later on. Sometimes people mock it but I consider it a legit way of getting money. In any case, there are alot of ways to make money, but each one requires some patience.

If you're looking for a pet-job to do as soon as they're unlockable for you, Beastmaster is probably your safest and easiest choice. It's fairly cheap, straightforward, and teaches you alot about the game that you might not have known before, plus, it's fairly fun exploring as a BST.

You really don't want to rush into Summoner or Puppetmaster though, because Summoner is arguably one of the most tedious and expensive jobs, constantly having to defeat higher leveled avatars in tough fights just to use them, then again if you want money or need special items, and even again later on. It's border-line ridiculous.

Puppetmaster is very fun and my personal favorite job but it's also very expensive and not alot of people like PUPs, so you may have a rought time getting into a party. Above all though, just have fun. I think people take FFXI too seriously sometimes.

FFXI is a fantastic game, relatively cheap, and still holds a dedicated fanbase. It's pretty different from other MMORPGs in that it takes alot of patience, dedication, and hardwork to achieve, although they are attempting to make things easier and more casual-friendly with recent updates (I wrote about that in an upcoming article.)

With anything else I can provide, I can happily provide you with the links to the three-part beginner guide, which of course I don't claim as the greatest of all guides in existence, is helpful enough for you and get you started.

Beginner Guide Pt. 1: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/74/feature/2367

Beginner Guide Pt. 2: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/74/feature/2395/

Beginner Guide Pt. 3: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/74/feature/2478/

I do hope those are useful for you. If there are any misc. questions not covered here or in those articles feel free to ask.

Any Server will do well, but if you're looking for a populated/popular server in particular, Odin is probably more to your liking.

If you don't like Odin, you should just see if there are any here or on other sites willing to help you out if you start, or check out ffxiah.com's list of the servers, as you'll get a general idea of how that server's economy looks. (And there are some major differences in server-to-server economy.)

"Lastly, DO NOT EVER USE BENEDICTION IN A PARTY!"

Yet another author in the news section who's completely clueless. For me, this is the final nail in the coffin when it comes to mmorpg.com's "news" - the whole section is a complete and utter joke, mostly written by noobs who have no idea what they're talking about.

I'm fairly sure I do know what I'm talking about on this one.

As someone already said before, this wasn't a definitive "never ever ever" use remark, but generally it's good practice to not use Benediction in an experience party situation, as you're almost always targeted and unless it's near death or you're near a zone line, you're almost always assured a death of your own.

It's generally considered bad form to use it was my intent here, as it's basically the enmity generating equivalent of an atom-bomb.

Oh, worry not, there are several more quests you can complete around these levels, these are just the most useful for new characters that I had in mind. To find quests it can be a little difficult, any random person can give a quest, so sometimes you just have to keep looking around.

I am saddened by this as well ... my PUP is 75. It was painful and very disheartening. Fact of the matter is it is true. People don't like Puppetmaster. I got bitched at for hours by an ls mate because I wasn't coming to a testimonial farming as my whm when we needed a healer. The long and short of it ... PUP has Cure V, but i still had to listen to it for an hour before he'd give the idea a chance.

Perhaps someday I could use your imput on a Puppetmaster guide?

"Puppermaster (PUP) is considered useless by a lot of people standards, but that is because they don't give them a chance. If they are able to keep their skills up -- which they won't if they have to keep soloing -- and keep good gear they can be quite good. You will LFP on this job and never stop. Don't pick this job if you want quick parties. Find friends then bride your friends to party with you if you are interested in PUP."

I'm a little saddened by that because I'm actually leveling Puppetmaster at the moment (currently 67) and I've found it incredibly useful and alot of people impressed with the job once they've given it a chance. I just don't want to give the topic author the wrong idea here, alot of people have the idea that PUP is worthless and shouldn't be invited but it can be incredibly versatile and the combination of the damage from the automaton and the master can be sizable.

Sure, alot of people don't like PUP sadly, but it's not worthless at all, they're actually quite powerful and its a very very fun job to play.

As far as I can tell, yes, your friend should be able to gain EXP at the same rate you do.

I think the idea of the level syncing system is a good one, even if I have a few concerns like overcrowding of the good camps. But my biggest problem is the idea of boosting EXP from Easy Prey and Decent Challenges. No one's ever been expected to party on incredibly weak monsters so I don't see the point in increasing the EXP from those monsters.

I suppose it still matters how serious the boost will be and what it'll end up being in total. We'll have to wait until the 8th to see.

“The contents of this post do not necessarily reflect the views of MMORPG.com and its management.”

At least to me, anyway. I was reasonably excited over the level sync system until i saw this at FFXIclopedia this afternoon.

"Experience Boost

Loyal readers already know that the new Level Sync system and automatic scaling-down of equipment will add a heretofore unheard-of level of freedom to party-based adventuring, but that isn't the least of it! With the new version update, there will be more experience to be had as well!

Previously, enemies classified as "easy prey" or "a decent challenge" would provide a relatively paltry amount of experience points, leaving career-minded adventurers understandably dismayed. No more, however! Vanquishing these monsters will now lead to substantially larger helpings of EXP, to better reward players for braving the challenges these still-formidable foes present.

Information on the Level Sync system and equipment scaling can be found here."

This concerned me because, although I loved the idea of players being able to 'power down' to level with others, the idea of allowing people to get a substantial amount of EXP from weaker monsters didn't even cross my mind. I'm just worried that they've crossed a line between making something easy and making something too easy.

Of course we'll have to wait until it's out to properly judge, but giving substantial EXP boosts to easy prey and decent challenges strikes me as too much. What does everyone else think?

I don't know if anyone else felt, or got the impression that "Quests for the Gil Seeker" was referring to RMT at which point i couldn't resist seeing what was said. lol... I honestly think that this was not in anyway an efficient gil guide at all. I hope you dont honestly do this yourself because there are multiple ways of making gil without having a 75 is the first thing, secondly it  sounds like you obviously dont't know what you are talking about when you refer to just Warriors and Dark Knights as melee. IE: Samurais, Dragoon, Thieves: The best farmer in-game wasn't mentioned, Ninjas. I'm sorry but you really don't know what you are talking about at all.

I didn't realise i was supposed to list out every single job in the game. I just used Warriors and Dark Knights as examples, i wasn't referring to them as good farmers. This is just absurd. I don't see how not referring to Ninjas or Thieves, when that wasn't even the point of the article, means I don't know what I'm talking about.

Is it just me or do some people circle mmorpg.com waiting for game correspondents to attack? I like to keep track of correspondent articles and I've seen this several times now.

Unfortunately the for Southern San d'Oria (S) quests you will need to around the 50-75 range to even get there and kill the mobs in WotG areas. For the other 2 quests you'll probably want to be in the 25-35 range to solo in those areas. Might want to recommend people subjob Thief for the item collecting repeatables. Personally I would have listed quests like the 4x Flint Stones, 3x Rabbit Hides, and 2x Bat Wings for newbies starting out in San d'Oria. Though they might make a little more money on the AH, they are great for raising your national fame level, and the mobs have really great drop rates even without having Treasure Hunter skill.

Those quests are pretty well known and generally only get you about 100-200gil each trip. Also you don't need any specific level (well, about level 10 at minimum) to actually get to Southern San d'Oria (S), anyone can go through the Cavernous Maws, all you have to do is avoid the monsters to get to Southern San d'Oria (S), but lower levels generally have to dodge monsters everywhere to get places anyway, so this is hardly different. (For example, traveling through Tahrongi Canyon, the highlands, or La Theine Plateau, to get to the dunes.)

This guide wasn't really made for any *specific* group of people, it wasn't catered to higher levels (because they can easily get their gil elsewhere, obviously) and it wasn't really catered to newbies so much. You need at least a tiny bit of experience to get around. The only one that I remember actually needing a 75 or two on is fighting the Orc NM on the second quest concerning the Young Griffons.

EDIT NOTE Fore Everyone: This guide wasn't meant as meaning that you can make more gil by doing these quests than you can farming. Certain quests net you substantial rewards, but there are obviously ways of making money towards the end of someone's leveling days than there are at the beginning. This guide was meant for those people at the lower end of the spectrum, or those in the middle, 40-60, who don't necessarily have as many ways of making gil as players more powerful than they.

Fist of all, the angelstone and the deathstone rewards are part of the storyline, which everyone eventually will have/want to do and so they WILL get the rewards.

This is like saying a great way to make gil is to do all the Rank missions, sure it will net you more than 500.000 gil, but this is something everyone will do eventually anyways, but its not time efficeient, you dont do this for gil, its for a higher purpose.

Well, In the last year we have seen prices drop alot on some of the essential gear. Ill take an example but this is true for more or less everything on the auction house.

1 year ago you could buy/sell a Haubergeon for approx. 3.5 Million on the AH.  It is now approx. 300.000gil.Thats 1/10th of the orginal price a year ago.

1 year ago you could buy/sell a stack of Beastman Blood for 75.000 gil. Now is approx 25.000. Thats a pricedrop of only 1/3rd.

Rank missions are a decent source of gil, that's just not why people do them, virtually everyone uses gil as a nice perk to doing rank missions in every nation. Of course it's for a higher purpose but that doesn't mean it can't necessarily be done for a source of gil as well.

Quests like Seeing Spots can net you well more than 30k a day, if you actually play more than a few hours. And you sort of made part of my point for me on gil. Equipment prices have dropped dramatically over time, and are still dropping to this day. Whether it be Haubergeons, Monster Signas, or Noble's Tunics, the prices continually drop while these remain the same no matter what occurs. (Except maybe for the stones but those remain so rare i doubt the price will drop significantly for the forseeable future.)

I appreciate the feed back but this guide wasn't "inaccurate" it just didn't help you.

I played FFXI for a solid 3-4 months back in 2004. I liked the "Aggro" system for monsters where the monsters will attack party members who deal the most damage over time (or when a player does heal spells or abilities) or what not.
Do most MMORPG games use this system now? If not, which ones do? Do non-MMORPG games use this system?

Thanks for your input!

Most MMORPGs use this system when your party fights a monster, yeah. It's just that in FFXI you're in a party often enough that you actually have to learn something about hate.

Very true. As a 75 WHM from Cerberus I was required to actually determine what spells would draw hate towards me and how many I could get away with. There's different levels of hate management for each job really, Tanks, Soloers, Mages, etc, and you actually have to learn that about every role or you'll be hated by your party members sometimes.
