Going f2p has the potential of being very good for DDO.  You will get more people logging in with friend because it is free.

I have a buddie who has 3 kids under 3 years old 2 year old son and then twins.  He loves to play these games but does not have enough time to play games to make a $15-20/mo subscription worth while,  With this I can have him play DDO and not feel like he is wasting money month to month. And as he want access to more he will be able to buy upgrades in the store.

I have several other friends who also want to try once it goes free to play. This will likley result in several of them subscribing in the end. I have been wanting to get back to playing DDO and this will allow me to finally have my frinds playing with me. And that is what really makes me enjoy MMOs.

I have been playing the beta and will play once it goes live. The reason I stopped playing DDO in the first place was my friends were already playing for WoW and did not want to pay for a 2nd MMO. This has them interested and would allow me to play again with the benifit of having my penny pinching  buddies there with me. and if they want to have access to more of the game they can either subscribe or purchase the features thay want in the Store.

I think this could have a possitive effect on MMORPGs. Instead of world dieing off as people jump ship to new games they could still log in and play casually as a suplimant to their new MMO of choice. This keeps the community active and healthy and keep the world populated instead of becoming a ghost town as I have seen happen in game after game.
