I have always liked biowares games but after the original swotor things seem to have become more and more formulaic. Still they are usually fun games. I just finished witcher 2 and I have to say it felt pretty 'fresh' after half a dozen biowares. Whilst the story might not have been 'great' I certainly enjoyed the different approach to story tellng. I also rather enjoyed the grittiness and adult language and themes. I can't help thinking bioware have become complacent even though they put out pretty good quality stuff.  I hope the 'multi' takes them out of their comfort zone.

Not sure you can tag Bioware with the word complacent; They are currently developing and delivering beyond their wildest dreams somethin never seen before of this scale with repect to MMO; THis will be a far far more content heavy game than any other MMO that has come before it.

You don't have to introduce 18+ content to not be complacent. Witcher is a good game but not great very tramline and not offering much more than the Witcher. I agree the storylines are enjoyable but I expect SWTOR will easily reach the same storyline with respect to quality and go far beyond what the witcher has delivered. Nice solo game.

If you want an honest answer; I dont think you have a place in MMO's if youre so against grouping with players outside of your family and friends. One of the most appealing aspect of MMO's for me is meeting new people and making friends online.

Another appealing aspect of MMO's is that you can play the game the way you want to play them (most of the time), but you are upset that your nephews focus more on PvP than you do, and thus seem to 'out-level' the content you are working on.

I suggest approaching the situation with a bit more of a give and receive attitude, If your nephews want to PvP, let them do so, and if you help them out, they may be more inclined to help you out in your endevours, and vice versa...

But if youre dead set about keeping your group friends & family only, then I think you may have a more enjoyable experience playing Single-Player or Co-Op RPG's and Puzzle-Platformers.

It sounds like harsh advice, but MMO's are popular because of the social nature of them, and I doubt that will change in the near future.

Bad advice sadly.....

I play with a group of around 10-12 friends , who have played together for the last 15 years.

Pickup players in general are a waste of time and are in too much of a rush which means no fun or enjoyment.

We all play solo &  group sometimes but none of us are in a rush or pressured to beat games.

We have found that just enjoying and competing in our circle is what makes the games.....

And no pressure to play specific class types/ bullying or its a job scenarios that come from the normal set of bully boy guilds.

So reading your advice and basing it on my MMO experiences . I would say is a load of rubbish with the respect to circles I play in.

Any games that Offer;

Cliff Jumping (to see who can take the most damage from a fall) , Arena where we can fight each other for a laugh or just general mess around features then that is a bonus.

Approach Alternatives;

Completing quests with no DPS or no Healing running groups that shopuld just outright fail is our approach to having a fun time. You just don't get that with most of the idiots who seem to be parsing damage stats and kicking the person from a group because they maybe dont have the best armor or can't play for 10 hours straight.

Personally I don't think the analogy really fits. Stick means you force players to do something they aren't inclinded to do by enforcing penalties on them. Carrot means you dangle a promise of something good before them, yet they never really get that reward, it just remains an endless temptation.

What Bioware is doing with social points is paying you to be someone's friend. The more people you befriend and the longer you hang out with them, the more you get paid. Its nothing more than the next logical step in the current mercenary climate of modern MMOs. The "I don't team up with you because I like you, but because of what I can get out of working with you." "And what's your gearscore by the way? What!? That low!? Take a hike chump."mindset that is all to prevalent in games these days.

A large percentage of gamers mysteriously want to play a game simultaneously with thousands of other people but don't actually want anything to do with them. So game makers are at their wits' end as to how to make features that require or just encourage these antisocial soloists to actually interact with another human being. Bioware decided "bleep" it. Just pay the litlle buggers. While I'm sure it will work, it seems to be a sad comentary on the pathetic state of Massively Multiplayer Gaming.

A .ot of people like to play in a certain manner and as long as these rewards are not game breaking many will just not bother with social points.

So, we got to see the Death Penalty with the the Live Demo game play with Daniel.

Me personally, I think its too light. As you hear from Daniel takling about it how they use it to their advantage in some of their own Flash Points and other harder fights where they are kitting a MoB around to where they can get self ressed right at the spot.

For those of you that don't know the current death system,

Right now it appears that when you do die. You have 2 choices you can either be ported back or self res on the spot thru a probe droid. It doesn't appear to be any draw backs if you take the self res on the spot other than you res with low health and you have a 12 sec invis to move away from the area. Then rest up to full health. From what Daniel said the only draw back is that each time you die the timer is just longer. Which that to me is hardly any draw back at all.

I guess since I'm one for feeling the death from my past experiences with UO, EQ, and other various games. This current death system seems the weakest of all. Even weaker than STO at their start.

Thoughts on this?

Pretty Useless;

I would like to see;

  • 10% damage to all Gear on Death
  • Monetary charge for drioid or hospital services(If group players cannot ressurect)
Don't hit people with time , hit them in the pocket

Watched the trailer more carefully now and the galactic market looks great =D Should be your standard auction house feature, but hopefully with some kind of twist. I always end up doing alot of trade and crafting (succesfully =P) in any game I play and as such I've spent alot of time in various auction houses and there's a big difference between a well designed AH and a crappy one.

I'd like to see better filtering, some kind of built in "auctioneer", generally alot more info on sales and "worth" of items. Some way to fight those endless stacks of "1". I realize SWtor wont have a sandbox economy, but some thought put into it would be appreciated. I like that aspect of MMO's alot =)

The social hubs look like some kind of duelling area (tbh looks like ppl duelling anywhere really) and a cantina. Cantinas could possibly be the place for some kind of buffs? quests? Maybe repairs? Something with companions maybe... I dunno. Would be cool if they were more then "just social" but at the same time it cant be something hindering gameplay.

edit: also for cantinas, some kind of minigame surely.

  • All I want to see is if an item is placed on the AH and not sold within a week , it cannot be removed and is summarilary removed.
  • Communal area for player to player trading.

At the beginning of the TOR phenomenon, the one major complaint and worry from this community was whether or not TOR would be a traditional MMO or something like GW or AOC.

Now the problem is that TOR is a MMO in the traditional sense.

I'm aware some may have wanted something else all along, some are happy with what's presented, some just don't care.

That's really not what I'm adressing. I just find it ironic ( in a funny way), that in the begining the complaint and major worry of the time was it wouldn't be an MMO. Now the big complaint is that it's to much like an MMO.

All focus was on an acronym back then (when it mattered) no focus was on usable input about what people wanted in their MMO(s). I think it's safe to assume this is what you get when that happens.

I wouldn't read too much into what you read here it is not representative at all. If you took note of most of the forumns here the are comprised of the dissaalusioned or people laughing at the dissalusioned.

The game will offer a lot more than it doesn't.

The Graphics in SWTOR look great just as the game does; What the OP likes of dislikes for me is not an Issue.

Could they be better yes maybe but in comparrison to other game of the same ilk they are great and will suit this new MMO fine when it releases.

I'd almost like to see MMO's brought (brought back, really) to the point of being simulated fantasy worlds.  Just like dropping you into real life; you do what you want and within the limitations of your abilities.

EQ1 did this very well, IMO, as did UO and AC1.  You started out as a 1st level character in a racial starting area and stepped out on your own, with only a crude map and a sense of adventure as your direction.  (Oh, the NPC bartender might give you a suggestion appropriate for your level, like go hunt goblins in Everfrost).  But you were in a "world" and you decided what parts of the world to travel to, to explore, and to level up in (or farm for mats in).

Worlds, not stories.  Background lore is fine, but a player should never feel he or she is forced to follow the script to some banal, worn, infinitely repeated story.

I agree with this and if wandering into a region you shouldn't be in you soon found out. These days it is difficult to die.

The Game will be fine, what a few naysayers spout here doesn't really impact the game whatsoever.

But remember there is no "loot all" button, you will have to look at everything in the other characters inventory and decide what items you want to pick up.

During that time you will be a easy target. You dont search a full backpack in five seconds you know. And threre is supposed to very small inventorys, with both weight and mass limit. So you have to choose what you want to throw away and what to keep.

Small Inventories is not true....

Hi All
Okay I’m sure this has been answered before but everyone seems to have different views on this topic .Firstly there seem to be several games that are about to come out that offer what some call “true pvp experience “ Darkfall,Mortal Online and Earthrise are games that offer this .
Now my question is death and looting. It seems to me the majority of people on these games forums support the idea of full looting when you die ..egg no insurance or soulbound items .Everything can be taken by someone if you die
Is it just me or does that concept not sound absurd .Maybe I’m missing something but let me explain my experience in MMO and items you get .I have spent sometimes 2 months in RL saving or questing to get a particular item ...2 months .Lets say it’s a ring .Why should I lose it in 5 minutes due to one of the following reasons
1. Attacked by someone much more powerful...egg 20-30 levels
2. Attacked by a group
3. Killed by a mob boss or any other PVE danger
I don’t know about anyone else but I die quite a lot in MMO’s .If you can’t have some kind of insurance how would you sustain any items? I agree there has to be a penalty for death...But the thought of possibly losing everything to looting really doesn’t make practical sense

Now before people say “shame he’s a cry baby and doesn’t know how to PVP”...or “stop being a care bear “for an MMO to succeed it can’t just have hard-core PVP’s as its subscription base .I don’t know of an MMO that allows full looting ...I may be wrong but the reason for this is clear .Even hardcore PVP’s would become frustrated if they couldn’t retain any items .
I would like to see insurance\soulbound on items on your person...can anyone confirm what Darkfall will offer ?

Later :)

It's a mindset once you realise it is your charachter that matters not material goods you will be fine.

Full Loot if you die thats it.

This game is skill based and has no levels.

Sadly if you die a lot you probably do it because there is no risk.

just a bump so that anyone coming here for the first time has other sources to view. Rather than the depressing doomsayer crew that creep here.

And in conclusion and just keeping things simple, I think that to put so much effort into believing something you don’t appear to be able to substantiate seems twisted.

I could rattle an essay off like you appear to do in response to near every line someone type but there is no need.

So now not only my spelling and grammar are grounds to dismiss or attack me but now also being accused of writing to much is now being held against me, oh well.

Most of the content is factual but taken out of context, as someone who doesn't feel the need to invest vast ammounts of time trying too hard.

Please demonstrate what parts of the content is not factual, by taken out of context i presume you mean not interpreted only postively.

"vast amounts of time" nope, most of it comes up on the first couple of pages of google, and how can i be trying to hard when i enjoy finding out all these juicy morsels so easily.

I see enough information available regarding DF that I feel it will release in some form.

I also see enough information to feel it will probably release in some form, exactly when and in what form remains to be seen, but im hardly optimistic especially considering what iv'e found recently.

If something does not exist why would anyone be around pretty shady logic, yet another instance of a pointless statement.

What are you talking about?, i never said darkfall did not exist, if you cant comprehend why developers of games try to give the impression something is not what it actually is or will be then i cant help you.

I think people can decide for themselves whos been making pointless statements and indulging in pretty shady logic, especially by the end of the year.

(I wonder if another Novel will appear)

Sorry to disappoint you, perhaps another time.

So in conclusion and just keeping things very simple , I think if i keep it to one line you won't be able to produce a page. (Never Dissapointed)

I wanted concise responses if expressing this is an attack you must be dellusional, I guess you are playing the i will try to report someone by using the word attack interesting very interesting. I have my answers, and all i needed to know.

I just think the poster above was trying to say there was nothing to discuss, peoples CVs from unofficial sources. I look at the initial thread whats the point of it.

What you really mean is there’s nothing really positive to discuss about the facts and information presented, and I agree, so because your only interested or capable of talking positively about this project then you obviously have nothing to discuss.

The developers CV’s from LinkedIn are only a small proportion of the information presented in this thread, but of course one would have to read past the first page or not be in denial to appreciate that.

These “unofficial” CV’s were changed after I posted them here, and they are almost certainly legitimate because of all the circumstantial and correlative facts, your attempt to question them by casting dispersions about their authenticity is just another attempt to discredit 3rd party information that does not reflect positively on this project.

The only reason why you or any of the other supporters declare this thread is pointless, irrelevant or empty is because most of the 3rd party facts and information presented can not rationally be interpreted positively, so you are forced to resort to the usual and utterly predictable name calling, straw man arguments, semantics, denial and attempts at character assassination etc.

Are you trying to prove some dark conspiracy or theory ?

Nope, just presenting 3rd party information and facts with my own personal opinion on what they mean, who knows what they really mean but we will get a very good idea if my interpretation of these facts are correct by the end of the year, so no need for conspiracy theories.

Is this just a post count excercise ?

What?, Alt/1 week old supporter account 2345 are you seriously accusing me of a post count exercise, how desperate and ludicrous can you get.

I wouldn't say this thread is funny though just empty you seem a little bitter with respect to DF.

The only people who have demonstrated they are bitter in my opinion are the supporters of this project who have felt compelled to personally attack and attempt to discredit me for posting information and facts they obviously find disquieting.

Again to declare this thread is empty is a very desperate attempt to deny this thread probably has at least 10 times more verifiable and new 3rd party facts and information then any other Darkfall thread, of course if you disagree then please provide a link to a similar body of 3rd party evidence, your failure to do so will demonstrate a tacit admission of this.

Anyone declaring this this thread is empty is a ridiculous statement to anyone who’s objectively comprehended the numerous and substantial information and facts presented and would only be said by someone who has an agenda to promote and discredit anything not positive about this project or by someone who’s in denial or simply someone who’s not read past the first page.

I used to doubt DF but when people go to the extent you seem to to pick at DF my gut feeling says it must exist.

So gut feeling’s and logical fallacy’s are all you have to support your opinion, forgive me if I don’t personally find that very persuasive, in fact I find it rather amusing if that’s all you have.

To put so much effort into doubting something you don't appear to believe in seems twisted.

And to put so much effort into believing something you don’t appear to be able justify belief in seems twisted to me.

This is not about belief, faith or trust for me, its about cold hard facts, I have presented them here, belief is not a requirement to objectively interpret them, in fact as you have demonstrated it makes that impossible.

We will see if your or any of the other supporters faith and belief in contradiction to this evidence is justified over the next 5 months, of course I very much doubt you actually will be around then If I am proven correct.

Agree 100% shame the OP is on a ego trip Hillarious. I'd comment on the thread but there is nothing to discuss.

The only person who is demonstrating they are on an ego trip is you, expecting people to take your personal assurances as absolute certainty’s based only on your words and faith, but with no virtually no substantiation whatsoever, just like Tasos.

This is just information and facts with my personal interpretation of what they mean, the fact that you cant see that shows who’s really letting their ego affect their ability to be rational and objective.

And at the same time of course you yourself are hypocritically egotistically declaring this thread contains nothing worthy of your discussion, But I suppose the irony of that is lost on you.

Perhaps if you actually read the information and facts instead of dismissing them you might be able to come up with some stronger arguments other then the usual and rather pathetic attempts of character assassination and outright denial.

But then again perhaps you have comprehended them, yet cant come up with anything else more substantial.

And not to mention you hypocritically declaring this body of evidence is not worthy of responding to, yet of course doing so anyway!.

The fact is you personally know a lot of this information is potentially very troubling, that is if your not totally irrational of course, you just don’t want accept it publicly, because it makes you realize the trust and dedication you have committed to this game and the people behind it over the years has been demonstrated to be probably very misguided and unwarranted.

So your just sticking your fingers in your ears and singing LA LA LA LA whilst calling me names, which is fine, if that’s how you or anyone else who still shares your conviction wants to present themselves.

Oh and by the way before you start accusing anyone of “shame”, “ego“ “hilarity” or their being “nothing to discuss” lets wait to see what actually happens by the end of the year.

If this game successfully launches this year with the majority of its proposed features, as the developers have officially committed themselves to doing, I will happily be making a public apology to anyone who cares shortly before commencing to play it, the questions is will you or any of the other ardent supporters be doing the same if it doesn’t?, I very much doubt it myself.

I just think the poster above was trying to say there was nothing to discuss, peoples CVs from unofficial sources. I look at the initial thread whats the point of it.

This also proves the relationships between Tasos and Yellowbeard and even moreso the reson he was allowed to visit interesting.

So you're basically saying this person was a close friend of the Dev's? More proof that the onlyp eople they let in to see anything are people who they know they can control.

Why don't they let an editor from Gamespot connect to the game world right now and write up a preview?

I am a big fan so no buts there. But in guild speak terms some of the hardcore PvP guilds do speak with each other. And i just thought that there is a closer link , than the stupid example SignusM gave trying to be clever not constructive.

It would also explain why they showed Yellowbeard the game and had a chat for old times sake when they are so busy.

That is no reason to doubt Yellowbeards integrity though.
