Now with all the drama at SOE with EQNext etc  is this game going to even be released ?

I think the real question here is, does anyone really care if it does get released anymore?  If it were to release tomorrow, I wouldn't give a rats ass.  There's nothing to this title that we haven't already seen nor have an abundance of already.  It's just another throw away MMO.

I think that's a little ignorant to say seeing as how we don't know jack shit about the game and what it has yet.   Pretty much the ONLY thing we HAVE seen so far is the graphic system.  We havent seen gameplay(more than what they've barely shown us which is basically nothing), structure, etc, etc, etc.  So to say that it's something we have already seen is a little far fetched.

We're 6 months into 2015 already and have hardly anything at ALL about EQNext...  I hardly believe this is the year of EQNext.  With all the firing and shuffling around new acquisition of the studios for Daybreak, EQNext is a far ways off if anything.   Take a look at Landmark.  Every single server they have is on "low" which is not a good indication and less and less is coming out from their part on Landmark.  Overall, no matter what Daybreak studios SAYS, their actions speak louder then words on what is going on.  EQNext while I hope comes out, isnt looking all that promising sadly.

EQNext was announcing in early 2009 and the media push began 2012-2013 only to stop for no apparent reason.

  1. Landmark development taking longer than anticipated.
  2. Fan buy in not as high as anticipated.
  3. Being sold/bought.
  4. Losing team members.
  5. Moving studios.
Although I'd argue there wasn't really a "media push" beyond the reveal, follow up at the next SOE Live, a few interviews, and Round Tables. Landmark was the focus from the start and continues to be. Why would they push EQN when it clearly isn't ready for that?

You are trying to make it sound like "next Everquest" and EQN are some completely different projects that are in no way related.

Not sure what book you are referencing, but John Smedly is on video in 2009 (march I think) talking about development had already started on EQN, so that puts it somewhere in 2008 at least.  Not that it matters.  The game has been scrapped and restarted so many times I doubt anyone really knows dates anymore.

Obviously they are related. The degree to which isn't fully known but quite a bit has been revealed.

While I get you are saying development on the next EQ title started a long while back, you clearly seem to grasp that the current version isn't as old. Maybe it's semantics, I don't know.

When they throw away the concept art, character/mob models, progression, class, and combat systems and bring in completely different tech and shift development in an entirely different direction, not to mention lead devs coming and going, for me it is safe to say that regardless of what something is labeled, EQN 2008-11 =/= EQN 2012+ or whenever they actually fully shifted.

If it takes them 10 years and the game is high quality, I don't care. This "now or else" mantra some have is childish.

If it is like Wildstar and just another meh game after years, sucks for them I guess. BTW, WS took 9 years to develop, released 3 years after reveal...

Wow, Wildstar took 9 years to develop? Seriously?  Jesus, that's a shame.  I kind of feel bad for the people who worked on it for so long only to have it tank quicker then any mmo release in many years.  Wildstar was terrible :(  Even at launch I hardly saw any players which was VERY surprising as it was launch, where you expect to see 918238983 players but nope, hardly saw any and I ended up being on the highest populated PvP server at the time.

You can bet your ass we will NOT see EQNext this year.  We haven't seen shit on it yet.  Not gonna release this year at all.

News? just follow landmark....

See, to me this is what is concerning.  They say they're working on EQNext but when there are video presentations like this last one they did with the elves and takish, its all related to Landmark and/or they say they can't say anything yet.   So my question is, are the landmark players literally building the EQNext world?    Why can't they say ANYTHING at all regarding EQnext?  I really just don't get it.  Its really bad communication on their part.  It certainly makes you think if they have anything at all for EQNext.  It's been what, 2 years since they announced EQNext and we don't have really anything on the game what so ever other then the graphics.

It's kind of odd because Blizzard usually is the one that has site sealed lips on products but this, what Daybreak is doing is beyond what Blizzard does and it really makes you wonder why.  They COULD release little tidbits here and there on the smallest of shit but they aren't.  Is the current iteration of Landmark literally what they have for EQNext so far?  If so, that is pathetic

Concerning, concerning, concerning...

Don't be so concerned. The announcement -> release for WoW was 3+ years. So I think people may be blowing things out of proportion a little bit.

That, I didn't know.  It still doesn't change the fact that its bothersome that they can't talk about ANYTHING regarding the game at all or shown anything but the graphics engine.  I'm not looking for them to spill the beans on the entire game but little thing here and there showing any sort of progress would be nice.   What we do get instead is Landmark this, Landmark that, which leads me to my concern of - Is the current iteration of Landmark, literally what EQNext currently has?  If so, that's worrisome since they said the release time frame of what, 2016 for EQnext?  Can you sniff a pushback?

It looks like a few somehow think I was talking about what is or isn't vaporware..  Please go back and REREAD my post..  The only thing I was commenting is on the two highlighted words.. WE DELIVER..  I'm sorry, I still can't stop laughing that DGC / SOE is delivering anything in the past 10 years.. LOL  Having Smed try to sell me that they deliver is like listening to my Congressman telling me how he's looking out for me and my interest.. LOL

While SoE/Daybreaks track record isn't the best, they did create Everquest 1, basically the founding father of all 3d MMO's.  So while some people think more poorly of them, they DID create one of the finest mmo's to this day that a lot of mmo's take bits an pieces from, particularly WoW.  I played EQ1 for 6 years and loved every single second of it.  It "felt" like a world instead of these instanced, disconnected mmo's we get today, WoW included.  However, the doesn't mean I love SoE/Daybreak.  I think they've done more bad then good with their other games so while I applaud them for EQ and the incredible world/game they created with that, everything since then hasn't been even remotely close.

Than again, EQ1 wasn't within the 10 yr time window you speak of so nevermind, I have to somewhat agree, most of the stuff they have released in the past 10 yrs hasn't been anything spectacular to say the least and I think the dwindling population in their games speaks volumes.  It's funny when EQ1 still has the largest population of all their games.   Go EQ!

I was waiting for EQN for years and was all excited about it until the reveal and it broke my heart to see what they had done to the EQ. fancies.

Graphics, combat style and classes balances are totally wrong for what EQ ment to a lot of its fans. Making it free to play also total killed this game for me.

I am looking forward to the new progression server and will be playing that for the next few years in EQ. So DBG are doinging something right and maybe they will sort out what a mess SOE did with EQN.

EQ1 or EQ2 is doing a new progression server and when?!?! I may have to hop on this!

I'm a huge fan of vanilla EQ, but not so much modern EQ due to all the changes..  EQ2 I was never a fan of, because it's just a poor copy of World of Warcraft.. In fact the original EQ2 that came out of the box was horrid.. I was one of the original players on launch day that LEFT EQ2 rather quickly along with thousands of others..

EQ2 Release date: 9.11.2004

WOW release date: 23.11.2004

Please explain how EQ2 could be a poor copy of WoW...

Easy.. (take notes)..  Current EQ2 is "nothing" like the original EQ2 that was launched..  I think you confused my comment about WoW as meaning that original EQ2 was like WoW..   But lets not fool ourselves that the patches and changes in EQ2 over the years is to mirror that of WoW..

What's your point? Sorry I haven't followed the thread all that much.  If eq2 borrowed from WoW then WoW borrowed from the original EQ.  Mmos do that.  They take from each game.  I think people forget that EQ is basically the god father of mmos... Some will say ultimate online but I strongly disagree. UO was a Diablo esque style game with some open ended features. I played it for awhile.  EQ IS the father of mmos.  Am I excited for eqnext? I was until I saw the combat. The graphics I can get by.  The gameplay  however is nothing short of disappointing .  As well as the lack of any trinity and action oriented combat .  No group structure.

Nope, no interest in I-don't-deserve-the-name:next. Still playing eq1. Waiting for pantheon...

You mean that game where devs are working for free because the guy at the top uses development money for his drug habit? Ya I got excited for that game till I spent 5 min reading up on who is making it =-\

Hey, every body goes through life with some sort of problem... Doesnt mean he doesnt deserve a second chance at things.  If he got help for his addiction which he claims he did, then he can be rehabilitated.  Hopefully it worked for him and Pantheon will be fantastic just like Vanguard was(minus the bugs)

On topic -

The second I saw saw the combat was to be similar to GW2, my hopes and anticipation went out the window.  I absolutely loathe GW2 and the grouping system in dungeons is a clusterfuck.  I can get by the graphics issue but the gameplay I simply cannot.

I honestly cannot wait for Pantheon!  Everquest and Vanguard were on a entirely different level in comparison to all the MMO's that have released since.  Vanguard and Everquest both felt like you were in a world, you had a sense of danger, you had a sense of how massive everything was. You don't get any of those in the current iteration of mmo's which is truly sad.

I played Everquest 1 for 6-7 years and I loved absolutely every single second of it, even through the hellish epic 1.0 quests that involved a lot of camping.  I remember every second of it and loved it!  I truly felt like I was working towards something truly powerful that I would actually FEEL it effect my character in a big way.  There is not a single thing in these mmo's now that gives you that feeling, nothing.  Every thing is handed to you on a silver platter and epics are a dime a dozen in games.  There's no sense of accomplishment at all anymore.

Vanguard further emphasized those feelings with its MASSIVE world, open world dungeons that I still to this day think are the best dungeons ever created, even if some of them were not populated or itemized, the scale and size of them being in the open world, going down into the terrain, having camping spots for groups, lots of named monsters to go after brought back that community feeling of getting to know people that EQ gave you.   Vanguard even with all its bugs/problems was truly a masterpiece on so many levels that no other mmo has been able to capture.  The size of the world was massive, each continent was truly unique and beautiful in its own way. I could go from Qalia(Desert continent) to Thestra(Largest continent) and feel an entirely different vibe.  Thestra was beautiful, massive, the dungeons(Vol Tuniel or whatever its called) was truly amazing. Not only was it massive underground, it was beautiful.  I remember so many moments on my monk pulling for groups in that dungeon(Another skill/feature that needs to be brought back is pulling for groups)  I could go on and on and on about Vanguard.  It truly was amazing and I really miss it even with all its problems, It was flatout amazing with what it had and what it could have had.

It's a shame the dark elf dungeon(forget the name) never saw the light of day.  I know it had a huge dragon at the bottom and was massive.  Somehow leaks(pictures) of inside were released and it was actually populated with mobs, dragon included but never was released publicly to play through.  I forget the name of it but it was a dungeon/raid that was supposed to release when SoE took over but they didn't do jack shit to it.

If you guys make anything even remotely close to Vanguard and Everquest, my friends and I will be so happy to be in it that we would support it for a long time as we are dying for something similar to those two games.   Every time we talk about mmo's we always mention EQ and Vanguard and how they just stood out in comparison to the other mmos out.

Goblin Blood Mage.  I usually stick to more human type races but took a chance with the goblin and absolutely loved it! But the thing I loved the most was the Blood Mage class itself.  Best healer hands down of any mmo ever created. The most active and unique playstyle.  Could do tremendous damage if you knew how to weave damage into things for healing.  LOVED healing through damage.  No one has made a healer like the Vanguard Blood Mage.  Tremendous damage, insane healing, fun buffs that were powerful.  Loved loved loved it.
Tera's healing was rather fun last I played.  ESO's healing is fun as hell and can be challenging at the same time, reason being, the staff heals require a little bit of placement and that means people have to pay attention to where the heals on the ground are and/or you have to aim correctly to hit people with your cone heals.  The Templar class has a strong PBAoE heal which makes it easier so if you did play ESO and wanted to heal, I'd suggest Templar.  Now, you can heal as another class but would have to rely on the healing staff heals.  The NIghtblade offers a little different style of healing which is also challenging.

I'm currently taking a break from mmo's(first time in 16 years) simply because there hasnt been anything out that has captured the magic that Everquest and Vanguard captured.  With that said,  It might be smart of them to re-skin, update the graphics, animations, sounds, etc for Everquest 1.  Why? Because currently, EQ1 is Daybreaks highest revenue game that they currently have and with EQNext being dubious for now, who know if they have anything else up their sleeve to bring in cash flow.

They have already updated the character models back in Luclin and what a mess that caused.  I was there for that and man did it cause problems.  Though, it was many many years ago when they were updated.  I would be up for playing EQ again if they did re-do a lot of things but I do wish for a game to come out to re-introduce camping for exp/loot in open world dungeons/contested dungeons how it did instead of instancing everything how the current trend of mmo's have been doing for awhile now.  These games don't "feel" like "worlds" but instead, instances that you get put into with people that you do not know and will forget them once the instance is completed.  Bring back the importance of community and communication.  Fuck the auction house system and bring back actual communication between players.   Bring back it taking a long time to level up your character with "hell" levels that EQ had.  Leveling isnt shit now, its quite sad and pathetic.   BLah blah blah, I'm ranting but thats because nothing has captured the true epic "world" feeling that you got with those two games.

Bring that shit back!

Vanguard's dungeons were and still are the best dungeons ever created with original Everquest being up there at the top as well.  Vanguard's dungeons were open and went down under terrain, were massive, lots of bosses, lots of areas, great experience for groups, built friendships, Huge huge dungeons that were simply incredible.  More devs need to do these.

They could do what EQ did and have 2 types of PvE servers.  You had the regular servers that you paid for, I think it was 15 at the time and then they had another server, I cant remember what it was labeled, I think legacy server or something, I cant remember exactly but I think it was around 25 dollars to play on it.  From what I can remember, they were given more features such as quicker spawn rates on raid mobs or other stuff, unique items, etc.  They had more incentives for that server which was cool.  I never tried it as I just stuck with the regular servers.  That would be interesting if they did that.

All I know is that if they update the animations in the game to be more modern like for todays standards in games, Ill pay whatever they set the price to.  The graphics look alright but its more so about the gameplay and the world.

What I want to know and can't seem to figure out is how do you access the online chalice dungeons to play with others/friends?  Has anyone figured this out? I want to see the longevity in this game... If it doesn't have any I may take it back. It's fun am all but 65 bucks while not a lot of money could go somewhere where there is longevity.

To this day EQ 1999 is the best MMO to date.  Every fucking game including WOW just plainly sucked since.  I cannot get over how shitty today MMOs are.  Today MMOs are a reflection of todays world. Younger people today are to simple minded to handle anything to hard for them to do. They want everything done for them like they are 10 years old.

You can have your hand holding piece of shit MMOs of today.

Wow, so mad....chill pill maybe? :)

As upset as he sounds, its actually the truth and I agree with him whole heartedly.  In regards to both mmo's and younger people today.   Everything is so simplified, kids do not know what it feels like or what its actually like to work hard for something, whether its a game or real life.  Its quite sad.  Too much give and not enough discipline.

People who complain about games not having enough to do, it has to do with the games being very simple, and everything being given to you on a silver platter.  I cannot remember the last MMO after EQ/Vanguard that had any real challenge or longevity to things.  And then when there is something that is even remotely close to having any challenge or effort needed, people bitch and complain and the devs give in and make everything extremely easy.    Look at WoW for example.  Vanilla WoW was at its best in my opinion.  Everything has died down ENORMOUSLY.   Purple epics in wow are like a dime a dozen.  Everybody can get them just for logging into the game... Its become that sad.

I sure as shit Pantheon goes back to that epic feeling, that epic sense of danger,  you agro a mob you better run your ass off because its going to chase your ass off.  That sense of danger in the world is missing in all these mmos.  Its truly sad.  I have high hopes for Pantheon.  Was a long time player of Everquest 1 since it launched and played Vanguard from its launch till its unfortunate sailing.  Two beautifully created worlds.  We need more like them in every single way.

I want support classes back and to actually play a role in how they actually effect encounters, debuffs to actually FEEL like they have a debilitating effect on them such as a slowing of attack speed(Made a HUGE difference in EQ)  Buffs from players to actually matter and have a big effect on players and them actually FEELING like they are making you stronger.  I still think to this day, the Enchanter from EQ was the strongest, yet weakest class in the game and reason being, Enchanters had a risk vs reward type mechanic where they could charm difficult mobs and buff them with attack speed significantly increasing their attack speed which would result in them doing insane amounts of dmg with their charmed pet, and then on the other side of the spectrum, if the charm broke, the Enchanter was essentially fubar unless he was quick on things.  Don't make the classes all feel so generic, make them unique like the Blood mage from Vanguard.  That, to this very day has been one of, if not, the MOST fun class I have ever played in my 16 years of playing MMO's.

Ok, you made me laugh.  Thank you.

Your welcome.  Thank you for contributing a hell of a lot to the conversation...

It is a little disheartening seeing the company change hands first of all and now storybricks(which I honestly dont know what they even did) go to wayside.   Its never good to see people get fired and then a piece of the puzzle get removed(storybricks)  The thing I'm seeing is kind of a repeat of Blizzard and their Titan project.   Titan was scrapped and restarted and then cancelled.   EQNext was scrapped, restarted and now all this is happening... Is it heading the same direction?  Hopefully not but only time will tell.
