Good for Sony, I am glad that I bought a PS4 instead of an Xbox One. If the PS4 keeps on doing this well more developers will make more games and optimize them more for the PS4 due to the high market.
$60 seems like an ok price, if they lower it down there would be way too many level 90s running around who would not know about their classes. :P

Mostly you had to pay monthly fees becasue they didint know other business model. Now as they are introduced to new b2p with micro transactions i dont understand why people still making new games with monthly fee. Teso mostly will go f2p aswell no doubt about that.

And to you op i have to say that you arent very smart. Becasue if people doesnt have money to spare for monthly subscription ( i bet they could save up for B2P title) they will go searching for similar F2P title this is logic. And if you dont want to see people searching for something else you shouldnt be in these forums at all. They get so much more from other business models than subscription.

Not necessarily true though, most of those F2P players horde into P2P forum threads and complain about how they are not F2P and start doom threads instead of searching for those F2P titles like you said :P.

There is only one reason why F2P is popular...  It is because people have gotten burned by P2P enough times, that they no longer believe the lie.

There is absolutely no (technical) reason why P2P could not be the 'best' business model. What has doomed it to failure is the abuse of the system. Customers are tired of paying for something... and then finding that the reality falls short of the promise. F2P appeals to the basic premise that the customer gets to see behind the curtain BEFORE paying for anything, and as such will not get fooled.  People are tired of getting fooled, and have voted with their dollars.

Or people are just cheap? :P

no this is 150% the free to play crowd screaming for it not being worth its cost monthly. Also its the sandbox crowd screaming its going to be all doom and gloom because it has quests in it and you cant play lego's all day. This game is coming out on consoles and pc , This game contrary to this sites jaded members beliefs will not be free to play for a very VERY long time unless it completely tanks on PS4 and Xbox which I highly doubt. 15 bucks a month is water in a bucket compared to the high prices of a cash shop in the end.

This ^

My favourite moment from any final fantasy series was seeing Sephiroth come out of the fire in FF7.

If you buy a box and pay a monthly fee you should get absolutely everything that game has to offer ... everything, no matter how "cosmetic" or "you can get anyway if you grind enough".  That includes collectors editions, which, if you really have to have the silly things, should only have things like a spiffy art book and a nice figurine and a tee shirt.... NOTHING usable in game.  Cosmetics and raising money for horses and special races are all part of the game and buying the box and having a monthly fee should be enough.

Greed is going to kill PC MMORPG gaming.... if it hasn't already.

You can thank F2P MMOs and the F2P players for that :P. If all MMOs was P2P like the glory days of MMOs you probably would not see micro-transactions now.

See you in game :)

This is utter bullshit. For us who pre-ordered the game, who trusted the company even before seeing the finished product, and who also paid a subscriptions for months before the game went F2P, SW:TOR is not F2P, it's B2P. So OF COURSE we deserve more than freeloaders.

GW2 is also B2P, but at least they don't try to sell you essential UI elements in their shop.

Everybody has his own limits, I never minded giving $20+ to ANet every month to buy fluff and other stuff in their cash shop, but a company trying to sell me UI elements when I already bought the damned game digital deluxe edition and paid many months of subscription won't get a single more cent from me.

How so?

Former players get cash shop currency and more unlocks, all without paying any additional money. It's not BS, it's true. Former players do get more stuff, and they get it without spending additional money.

You have yet to explain the connection between previously buying something, receiving that something, and then deserving more of that something without spending any additional money. Nobody else has either. There was no expectation when you stopped playing and stopped paying money that you would, at some future date, receive additional stuff without spending any additional money, so why is there that expectation now?

There is a big difference, those players who bought the game before and subbed actually supported the game in a monetary form. F2P who are complaining are people who does not want to spend a dime on the game. So, why should a player who has no interest in paying anything for the game get the same privileges as someone who actually spent money on it? And you are also forgetting that you can get preferred status by spending only $4.99.

I would pay 20 to $30, I have gotten a lot of classes to max level and hate the whole leveling thing from level 1 on different servers.

but explain why they are restricting Support????

Because it cost money to provide support. For example, If they provide support to F2P players it will add more work for their current support staff and increase wait times for paying customers to get support. I think I have a solution for EA/Biowares for people like you, they should add a special subscription plan where they charge you $3 to $5 per month for premium technical support :P.

Well obviously it's an artifact of when most people still bought games in physical stores which companies convieniently never got rid of out of greed but in this era when a lot of games require no upfront investment I think demanding a box price and a sub is shooting themselves in the foot and driving away a lot of potential customers.

Example I'm somewhat interested in playing ESO. If I just had to sub for a month and see if I liked it I wouldn't hesitate to do that but I probably will not be buying a $60 box on launch day just for a game which I will still have to keep paying for if I do like it. At least with Skyrim for example if I do plunk down the $60 on launch day and then am somewhat let down I can keep it on my hard drive and maybe it will grow on me.

There's no additional value in the box that justifies the additional price. It's only value is the "free" month sub code which could easily be sold in a much smaller package much cheaper if people don't want to buy online. Boxes are a total ripoff for the consumer and probably drive a lot of business away from these games.

You there is a high chance that the game will have open beta access and will eventually have trials, so you don't really have to spend $60 to try the game out :).

When this game releases, I feel so bad for SWTOR. Star Wars IP or not, it comes down to what is the best SciFi MMO out there and SWTOR won't have enough midi-chlorians to survive.

This game is only for consoles, so I don't think it will affect SWTOR by that much :P. In any case, I have Destiny pre-ordered and will be playing the beta on my PS4 :).

You are the problem with this genre.

No, that would be you, accusing people of being "the problem with this genre".

Oh yeah, because, I want people to actually pay for the shit they use. Get real. You code a game and then read a post like this. Spend millions of dollars and thousands of hours just to have someone free load. That's sensible. I stand by my words. And if you agree with him, you're part of the problem too.

But your argument only makes a stronger case for what maddemon is saying. It's no secret f2p games are making more than they were as obviously they're not all just freeloaders that don't pay for the "shit" they use. They just choose to pay for different things.

One of the biggest problems this whole genre has is the out of control sterotypeing people seem to NEED to put on anyone that doesn't agree with their narrow view of what a game should be.

If your view of the genre isn't constantly evolving you're stuck in the past..and that is this genres biggest problem.

I think what he is getting at is that the more developers focus on making money off the F2P population, the less time they focus on improving game mechanics and more time finding new ways of making money from the F2P user base.

In my opinion, I would rather have the developers just focus on making games better than wasting time on all these nonsense micro-transactions.

Not sure, if the game is good enough and ends up maintaining enough of a population subbed to keep it profitable. I don't see a reason for it to go F2P or B2P, since these options are risky.
They are probably just trying to find out who how many costumers will pay for micro-transactions once the game goes live. Since, the game is going to be a f2p title, it's probably a good idea to find out more about their actual paying customers.

New games should offer a free 7-10 day trial and if you like you buy the box and pay a sub.  If not, f2p. I'm tired of paying $50-60 for games that are not worth the money.

People do that all the time with spg, but doesn't seem to be a problem until it is a mmorpg. I do agree that a short trial would be nice before dropping cash for box, but doubt too many AAA companies would do that and limit their initial cash intake. I prefer a sub, as if game is compelling/good it would keep people from jumping around like they do with ftp games. Better for community and number of regular players overall. It's just too bad so many mediocre to bad games get released. I wait for reviews and let a couple weeks pass to get a better idea of if it's my kind of game, as well as fixing bugs, before I buy nowadays. AoC was last game I played from day one, as they lied about content and what worked, etc. Too many games are not finished for release, so I wait.

Here we go again.

You have absolutely no evidence to prove any of that yet you state it as if it was fact.

I call shenanigans.

I haven't met a single f2p player that does not jump from MMO to MMO.
