Thats like me saying you owe me $20 and then wondering why your not paying me it.

Boo hoo?  It's not my fault the games animations and graphics are mediocre in comparison to older games.  I'll bash on SWTOR for the same reason, and I'm actually looking forward to that game.

The store shelves will be empty in the first month from people that found out from friends late or wanted to grab one from the local store.

So post launch store purchase will see another 800k to 1.5million in sales in the first month or two.

 

Then there will be the tests at 3 month mark, 6 month mark, and new game release times.

My year from now prediction is 2.5 million players with churn when new games release that drops it to 1.8million.

AoC had something worth selling, even if it was broke.  Rift won't have the same "something new" appeal.  It'll sell a couple hundred thousand and then drift down in the mediocre population range in a couple months.

And a year from now Rift will be less successful than either.  Aion and AoC are better games in almost every aspect.   Graphics, combat, theme, animations, PvP, content, customization etc.  They are all significantly better in those two games.  AoCs storylines and quests are ridiculously better, its not even close.  Feel free to do a point by point comparison, you'll get absolutely shredded apart and you know it.  

The only thing Rift does better is its class system (and the UI), and in all honesty AoC classes are far more original and diverse.  So it really only holds that advantage over Aion.  The "dynamic" rift system is just a stagnant PQ system.  Play the game a little longer and you'll realize how absolutely lame it is.

Nobody interested in PvP should be playing Rift.  It has lame ass scenario combat, pointless world PvP, and a mediocre combat system.  There are a dozen games that are better PvP games than Rift, and most of them have better PvE as well.

One of the saddest things about the MMO industry is how people don't go back and revisit older games that have had some polish & content applied.  Many of them are significantly better than the new games being released in almost every aspect.   If either AoC or Vanguard was "released" tomorrow, people would be absolutely blown away.

While the animations certainly aren't anywhere near as bad as he is making them out, they also aren't particularly impressive for a next-gen game.  Aion and AoC are ~older~ games w/ better animations, significantly better in my opinion.

DCUO for instance, which was just released, has animations that put Rift to shame.

Mediocre is exactly how I described it to my friends.  It seems to try really hard at doing nothing bad, and succeeds.  But it also doesn't do anything particularly impressive either.  Just mediocre.

That's a nice dream, but it wouldn't happen.  In the last few years we have had quite a few different MMO games that are very different from WoW released.  Darkfall, Mortal Online, DCUO, and Fallen Earth to name a few.  Then there are upcoming games such as Xyson and Earthrise that aren't following the WoW route.

These are all low budget titles, and very, very niche. Unfortunately, it's all we're going to get until there's an underground hit that didn't cost 30 million + to make.  If Rift, GW2, Tera, and TOR all fail (all games that should be successful on paper) then investors are not going to start putting their money into even riskier game designs, they're going to stop investing in the genre entirely.

Investors are always looking for something to spend money on, and if you can convince them there is a profit to be made... they'll shovel over the cash.  The only real difference is that investors will do better research on their investments instead of doing these get rich quick schemes based upon WoWs success.  Thats one of the main reasons there are so many WoW clones, because uninformed investors put pressure on companies to make their games in that mold.

So yes, you will see less low-quality MMOs, but high quality developers that inspire trust in their products and have a good reputation will have no problems what-so-ever.

If there is one thing the MMO industry needs, its less quanitity and more quality.

People want companies to stop trying to out-WOW WoW.
The environmentals are great. Lighting and shadows are great. Textures are great. The art style for characters and armor/weapons is flat. They went with a realism style, but that only works when you have outstanding graphics (AOC). As a result, character models and armor/weapons look pretty drab. Everyone looks the same, you have to really zoom in close on a person to be able to notice character design options like facial features and markings. And the dull animations just make your character seem lifeless. The default camara distance only makes for a worse initial presentation. Ultimately it reminds me of LOTRO. Great environments but weak character models/itemization graphics

Not exactly.  Controller became power batteries they were not always designed that way.  There is a reason they are called controllers and not "power healer".  The power bit was just shoehorned in at end of beta.  It barely even worked with 2 weeks to go.  There will most likely be changes to power over the next few months.

 

But either way its especially stupid because each controller set has a debuff tree that is vastly enhanced by being in controller role.  If you are the debuff tree and using it, 10-20% of that guys (and everyone elses) damage is from your debuffs if you use them.

What difference does it make as to how it was working a month ago.  This is how it works now.

Dont you find you run out of power stupidly fast? I cant seem to get off 5 heals without running out of power as a 30 sorcerer...

Thats why controllers exist.  When I run groups w/ people on my Gadget toon my Healers almost never run out of power.  Unless I start getting CC happy and bleed myself too dry to put up my power regen stuff.

The LOL part is when somebody in a Damage role gives you crap because you finished below him on the damage chart in a controller role.  I really just want to smack them.

Again, if it feels out of place it's because they made it feel out of place. That's a technical issue, not a lore issue.


That's the point of crafting discussion, since it's been done in lore EXTENSIVELY and this is a MMO (right?), where is it?

 

It didn't have to be some involved farming/making procedure with fails. It could have easily been incorporated.

 


Just a discussion point, that's all. But I still don't know why you think it doesn't belong in a Superhero MMO other than "two games tried it with mixed results"

It feels out of place because its a Superhero MMO.  Not because of the design of the crafting system itself.  The majority of Superheros aren't Batman.  They don't all have gadgets and suits and vehicles etc that works hand in hand w/ crafting.  Most of them just have their powers and thats that.  If you integrate crafting, it generally becomes a mandatory exercise to be competitive, or is otherwise uselss... that bumps heads with a vast majority of character concepts.

I've also never felt that crafting was an integral part of MMOs.  They all do it because they are expected to, but only a handful of them do it well enough to be considered an integral part of the game (ie Eve).  In almost every other instance, it is a nuisance and the benefits could be conveyed in a way that is more entertaining.  Take WoW as an example... remove crafting and what is lost?  Nothing.  Just benefits that could be conveyed in other means, or balancing that needed take place on account of crafted enhancements.

I could theoretically get behind the idea of some sort of advanced mission/exploration/collection/etc system that provides you with gear... where a series of achievements reward you with "x" or "y".... but thats not really crafting.

I for one is all in for small upgrades and several places you could obtain these small upgrades from, and ofc those small upgrades matter alittle when got the full set...either way am talking more from a EQ2 perspective again and they completely ruined their games itemization with too big upgrades, last expansion from raids this expansion both groups and raids, there is really no space for improvement in next expansion, even in this they had to rename old mechanics to make it seem new...

either way what you see as a problem I d say is a pro, have read other say crafted gear almost as good as gear gained through content...which imo is a good thing, hate the greed that some ppl show when gearing up is the "fun"

Combat is as fun as watching grass grow.  And the character models/animations are terrible.

Those are the major problems for me.
