I wanted to love Final Fantasy 14, I hoped that it would turn out to be a sparkling jewel of a game that I could hold high and admire. What I got was, well less.. I preordered two copies of the deluxe edition, one for myself, one for my wife. We play a lot of MMO's together and look back on our time in FF11 with fond memories. Upon receiving the game, it was installed, patched and then began the back and forth process of actually getting an account set up and all the codes activiated. Instructions on where to enter what code where sparse and some mistakes where made. After getting all of that straightened out and excited to get into the game. At character selection you get to choose from a wide variety of characters and assign a god to it, there is nothing explaining what if any benefit comes form a god selection or the birthdate selection so we used our own birthdates and went with the default god selection. Once in the game, we found that the UI is almost unmanagable with a keyboard and mouse. Moving the character around was jerky and NPC's where often missed because I failed to wait around for them to pop into existence on my screen. We connected xbox 360 controllers to our PC's and got around this problem. We managed to get the starting quest from the bartender and figured out where the levequest dispenser was thanks to a giant croud of players standing in front of it. Quests in journal we ventured out to begin our adventure. Once the aetherite was found we started our first levequest and selected a good group difficulty. We thought that was a pretty cool feature, once thequest was completed we discovered that only the person who initiated the levequest got the full reward and the other person could no longer initiate that levequedst or recieve the full reward for it. We split up and ddid levequests and both of us ended up dying a few times thatnks to iffy targeting (i.e. accidently target something other than the mob, such as yourself, and then have that target lock while the mob beats you to death) It took awhile to get past this and figure out the UI, once we realised that after the levequests where done, if you didnt want to craft, you had nothing to fo and xp diminished quickly. We tried again a few times but it seemed very repeptiive and a kind of forced solo experience. We canceled so that we wouldn't get billed for the next month. Today I decided to see what changed for the patch that came out on the 14th and discovered that you canno even play the remaining time that was on your account after canceling. We also did not get the extra free month they gave out. In the end we are very dissapointed in SE for releasing an unfinished game and not caring at all about their customers. I personally feel ripped off by SE. |
