There is also Vol 1 up too
Nice intro level stuff for people new to the game or considering it. |

I think some of that is caused by a lot of the fallacies some of the fanbots spew on this forum. Not saying all, mind you. Interesting video, though. Actually, one of the better ones I have seen.
The trollbots are worse, they haven't even played the game. |

Anyone willing to give a current update on the new "Expansion" features?

Originally posted by junzo316 I thought weather influenced the PvP, like field of vision and such. I thought it was supposed to be much more than "fluff".
So far for me night and fog have a much bigger impact. I guess rain does cut down on vision a bit, I'm just saying I haven't been in a battle yet where it has played a significant factor, maybe someone else can comment.
Edit: Here is a YouNoob video of some rain in Darkfall, judge for yourself. |

Weather is nice fluff. I live in the West (between elf and mahirrim) and I see rain every so often. It hasn't affected any PVP battles I've been in to a major extent though. I don't own a house and am not interested in one. The mob nerf has has a dramatic effect on spontaneous PVP action, people are out killing mobs and roaming for chests a lot more for sure. The durability on dropped armor still sucks but at least PVE is worthwhile now. Overall I think it was a worthy expansion, especially since it was free. |

Haha, you are right. I have been playing (server went down a few minutes ago for maintenance, so I'm back here). Let's see, what do I think of Darkfall now? Well, to be honest, it's sort of a love / hate relationship right now. The game itself is really kind of cool -- It has a lot of great mechanics and it's different enough from other MMOs to really stand out from the crowd. It's also somewhat frustrating at times. Here's a run down on everything I've noticed so far: What I like: 1. No levels. It is so wierd not to be constantly staring at a XP progress bar waiting for the next ding in a MMO. I love it. It really helps to eliminate that feeling of being on a treadmill. 2. There IS direction in the game. Before playing, I read that it's very confusing for new players -- you're just dropped into the world and have to figure out what to do. So far, I've had quest givers that have taken me from area to area and kept me busy. Additionally, reading the quests has helped me to understand a little of the game lore. Yes, I can run off and randomly do whatever, but I haven't had to do that yet. 3. I love the skill ups that come from using skills. It seems like ever action is attached to some skill in game. I understand that some people abuse this system by using macros, but since I don't, I don't really care at this point. It's fun for me. 4. World graphics - they're pretty darned good maxed out. The game world itself is quite beautiful. 5. Aiming attacks. Wow, I remember aiming spells way back when I played Asheron's Call. It was fun then, and it's fun now. Much more challenging than hitting tab to auto target and then mashing a button over and over. 6. Splash damage. This is something that I liked about Age of Conan, and DF has it too. If I swing my sword, I can hit all enemies in front of me. Makes fights a little more interesting because I contantly have to be aware of my positioning and how I'm swinging.
Things I don't like so far: 1. I hate that all my gear drops on death. Everything except my crappy starter sword. It kind of takes the fun out of finding a really cool piece of armor or weapon. I know that I'm going to loose it pretty darned fast, so I don't even get attached to it. Some people say bank it and use it when I'm in a group of friends. Blah! That seems like a weak way to play, so not for me. I wish that only random gear would drop or that there was a way to make certain pieces of equipment protected from dropping by spending big money or something. Ah well, that's the carebear in me I guess :p 2. Being ganked. It comes with the game, and I understand it, but boy it can really piss me off at times. Especially when it's some guy who is WAY better than me and kills me in a couple swings. I can't outrun him. I can't defend. I'm fodder. I have no desire to pick on people easier than me, and I guess it baffles me that others like doing it. There's no challenge and I have to believe they're just doing it to be annoying. 3. Character animations are really bad. Really bad. Overall, I don't know how long I'll be with DF. I'm not an avid PvPer and I like to solo / explore quite a bit of my online time. While the exploration in DF is awsome, the solo part is going to get me. Of course I new that this was a FFA PVP game going into it, so I'm not complaining. I just wanted to expand my horizons a little and check the game out. I really hope other developers are noticing the good things about this game. I'd love to see one take the level free open world design and apply it to a really amazing PvE game or at least one with controlled PvP.
I'm going to echo what other people are saying that joining a clan opens the game up tremendously. I think you can still solo/explore just fine if you join the right kind of clan. About ganking, getting out of the newbie city areas and heading out to a more remote area is your best bet. The nice thing about being in a clan is being able to base yourself out of a hamlet or city and to be able to wreak revenge on your gankers heh. Good luck. |

Let's put all the questions to rest about whether or not you should buy it.

There are a select few who manage to play the lone-wolf assassion or theif very successfully in Darkfall. I agree though it's a straightforward, no-nonsense summary of the game. |

I second this statement. More than anything this game is such a refreshing breath of fresh air in genre overflowing with mediocre WOW clones.
On topic, I forget who said it here that Darkfall was like Eve Online with swords and here ladies and gentlemen is Darkfall's TITAN. Actually it's better than a Titan in EVE because your whole alliance can ride it and use all the cannons. Now imagine if there were a bindstone on the ship.............

One can say that they are burning up their reserves. They are expanding into NA market because there are more money there. But, from a business perspective, I don't see how they can make a profit with the numbers they have right now. Some games just refuse to die even with very small subscriber numbers (Horizons for example).
Important point to note: While it's a small game by mainstream MMO standards they are also just a small independent developer so their costs and initial overhead are also much much smaller. I suspect even that even with 15000 subs on EU-1 and 10000 (?) subs on NA-1 they would be doing alright. All depends on the running cost of the server cluster datacentre and bandwidth.

Like you, the posting pattern fits the behaviour of someone who is only interested in bashing Darkfall and has been getting 3 month mmorpg bans. Weren't you the guy who started the Facebook group to bash Darkfall that only has 1 member? |

DF's poor subscription numbers would make one think that your equation is flawed. I actually meant long-term can't fail. As far as I know Darkfall sub numbers are still going up, it's just that opening the second server meant that to some players it seemed like there was a bit of a sharp drop especially I guess if you had lots of US players in your clan. EU-1 (where I play) is pretty much the same, but then I rarely ever played late enough to mix with many americans. One would think opening a second server means their sub numbers are going Ok. |

These are also quite nice videos of how pretty Darkfall is:
I think people under-rate Darkfall's graphics. Great PVP + beautiful world = can't fail. |

75 dollars for a boxed edition of the game, which is a limited run. Digitial download will be around DF price of 50, or less.
And where's the scam? You don't pay for beta, you preorder a game, with the added bonus of getting into its beta. There's no trick here, no lies, it's all clearly laid out for you. You don't want to pay for it, don't.
Jesus, mmorpg.com is quickly exhausting my patience for people making far fetched assumptions without bothering to do 30 seconds of research first.
I know all that. The scam is charging 75 bucks to beta test a game that has almost no media to prove it even exists. There is 1 teaser video and 1 gameplay video that shows almost no gameplay and barely any content. The fact the game is barely out of alpha, the lack of videos, the high cost and 6 months before the game even releases make this game very suspect in my opinion. Why charge 75 bucks for a beta test 6 months before release? Makes me think they are running out of money or have no content or both.

I agree, this game is highly suspicious. Charging so much up front and being 6 months away from release with only 1 gameplay video released that shows almost no gameplay... Am staying far away from this one for now. And charging 75 bucks to alpha/beta test the game? That's a scam right there. |

I have a 8800GT and I do not get any graphics lag unless there are hundreds of players on my screen, and I play with shadows turned on. Do you have mouse smoothing turned on? It is on by default. It does seem to create the impression of lag, I recommend turning it off immediately. As for too dark........ it's night, it's supposed to be dark ;-) The alfar area is very barren and desolate, so I know what you mean, but I always thought the barrenness was deliberate. Some will disagree but I like how in Darkfall some areas /are/ just plain barren and ugly, not every area has been touched up with props and purple trees /just/ to be visually appealling like most other games. A world is supposed to have barren ugliness as well as beauty. If you want beautiful scenery, go to elf or mahirrim lands. Good luck with it. It's a good game. Don't get too attached to your possessions. Sooner or later you will lose them. |

ya you always see score of people who hate the game calling out "rabid fanboys", yet truthfully I have rarely seen this. most of the time every thread turns into a cricle jerk of people hating on the game, with 1 or 2 fanboys trying to defend it.
This has been my experience too. The "haters" are much more rabid and illogical than the "fanbois". Not just this forum, all the forums on mmorpg.com. |

It's not that bad. Like with animations, only /some/ are bad. The "hit" sound is bad, some of the spell sounds are a bit cheap, other sounds are quite good. The handful of bad sounds are, in my opinion, balanced by the good attention to realism for sounds in the distance. Sounds can be heard from a long way away and don't become directionally distinct until they are very close. Footsteps sounds match the ground surface, heavy armour chinks when moving, wearing light armour or putting some effort into moving stealthily makes a lot less noise and allows backstabbing, etc. I think 7.1 is fair........ not great, not terrible. I agree the graphics are better than 6.8. It all depends how much weight you put on character models versus world and environment graphics, and then on your personal style.
