I actually like MO better then DF.
Been in beta since block A.  I've spent more time in this beta then I have in any released MMO in the past couple years.

Darkfall and Mortal Online are completely dif. games.
There is no comparing the two.

I'd like to point out.
The guys who are blasting MO as being bad,
Are Darkfall fans.

Stop worrying.
MO isn't going to kill your game.
It's not even going to compete for the same audience.
People that prefer Darkfall are going to play Darkfall for the style of game it is.

It's like trying to compare Shadowbane to UO.
Not the same kind of games, and as much as Darkfall fans want to deny it, Shadowbane is exactly the kind of game AV intended to make.

Seriously, other than the first item, you view these as cons?  Thank Lucan there are a few games out there that still have some complexity to them!  (And, for the record, EQ2 is not that hard).

WTF!

I didn't even notice it when I read the article.

How the hell can innovative gameplay be a con?
Isn't that like the biggest thing people keep complaining about within the genre?
"Were's the innovation?"

Since when has being innovative been a con?

Something else that slipped by me.
One of the pros listed is,
Lots of content!

Then they listed,
To much to learn!
As a con.

How can you have lots of content as a pro, but having to learn as a con.  If having to learn about the content, and quests aren't the only form of content, is a con then lots of content is a con.  You can't praise a game for having lots to it, but give it bad marks for having to learn what that content is or how to play it.

Horrible, horrible article guys.

WoW makes more money then that

Aions like the little sibling that can never match up to the older sibling (WoW)

NCsoft is the blizzard of the east.
Just because thier games haven't been a huge hit in the West doesn't mean they aren't in th East.

Lineage 2 is a monster, with just as many people playing in the East as Blizzard has playing WoW worldwide.

I think this is the first article I completely disagree with.
In fact, I downright dislike it.

I played on Nagafen, I'm assuming that's the server the author also played on.
I'm the definition of a casual gamer.  I play a couple of hours or less here and there, I don't think I've played anything more then 15-20 hours a week in a couple of years now.  I spend 99% of my time solo.

If WoW is the definition of a casual friendly game, then EQ2 practically plays itself.
I can craft without ever doing a quest.  Crafted Items are incredibly usefull, and I can craft anything from food to items that you can put in your house.

Solo quests galour.
Solo mobs everywhere.
Numerous quests that aren't typical MMO fashion.  Things like lore, and collections.
Solo dungeons.
Multiple paths of advancement.  Harvesting, crafting, class levels, AA's, favor.  The amount of stuff you can do to advance your character as a casual, solo player can be overwhelming.

The map shows you who has quests to give, and who you have to turn a quest into.
Guards will tell you were to find an NPC.

The tutorial zone has a tutorial part that explains how to improve your skills.  I can only assume that the author missed this part in the tutorial zone.  Looking through the broker will also show you that you can purchase skills, looking into crafting will also show you that you can craft skills.

Travelling is cake.  You simply use the docks.  The bells will take you pretty much every place you need to go, but doesn't remove the need to actually explore.

You have an ability to recall back to your home town, just like hearthing in WoW.

The capital cities are big enough that you can spend an unbelievable amount of time just playing in them.  Not just running around, but actually doing quests.  There's an insane amount of quests that can be done just in the cities.  At the lower levels you can litterally level multiple times just running around your capital city and visiting all the dif. places.

EQ2 is no harder then WoW, and on many levels is considerably easier.
However, it posses considerably more depth and substance that can be a little dishartening for a new player, if they go looking for it.  The basics however, are no tougher to learn or play then WoW from level 1 to 20.

If EQ2 isn't casual friendly, then WoW is casual impossible.

Edit:  I forgot.
The giant yellow umbilical cord that tells you exactly were to go 90% of the time!

Second edit:  I'm just blown away.
WoW is, for the most part, the exact same gameplay as EQ2.  You could practically swap out the graphics and people playing WoW would barely even notice someone changed the game on them.  I simply don't understand how anyone could say that EQ2 isn't casual friendly, when EVERYONE thinks WoW is the posterchild for how to make a casual friendly MMO.

Being a causual friendly game doesn't mean that everyone should know everything about the game in the first week or two of playing, that's called a shallow game.  Casual friendly just means that you can advance at a rate that doesn't require you to spend every waking minute playing, in otherwords, you can advance with just a few hours here and there.

I had to turn combat XP off cause the leveling was to fast!!!!!
The tutorial gets you to 10 in just a couple hours!  It takes about as much work to get to 20 when you leave the tutorial zone!

And no one was able to prove where that number came from. When people started pulling numbers out of their ass, serveral people actually went through the major alliances in the game and pulled their numbers from the game. There were 10k players just in the major alliances, thats when hyperion still existed. From those spreadsheets, it was estimated that EU had between 15k-30k which was probably closer to 20k.

Is havenandheart a full loot game?

Wasn't it 13k from EVERY single guild in the game, including deleted / unplayed characters?
Full loot and SORT of permadeath. Developers / moderators also have a policy on no interference except when people exploit bugs without reporting them.

I think even the most ardent hater agreed it was closer to 20k. You had a lot of solo lone wolf types and even folks with 2 accounts still counts so 20 seems more realistic.

No actually us "ardent haters" as you called us called Darth out on his BS numbers of 16K.
I don't ever remember the numbers ever getting to 15K, hell back in the end of beta it was made VERY CLEAR that they had to get rid of guards and go to guard towers because the SERVERS COULDN'T HANDLE MORE THEN 10K MOBILE OBJECTS!!
You shillbots have NEVER been able to prove more then 100 people in any battle to anyone that took the time to count. Those of use that played the game know the truth so keep spinning until you crash into the ground and your servers go dark. Keep up the good spin, it will really attract lots of new blood, ROFLMAO

I've participated in a 200v200 siege on Yssam during the Stasis v Yssam Alliance/Hyperion wars. The reason no one can prove more participating in a siege is because you can only see/show 1 person's perspective. I've tried explaining this before, when a siege is more than 100v100 there are smaller groups fighting on different front. The most you see in 1 area is generally 100 people, but in the entire battle zone there have been many as 500, that i know of. The largest siege on the server was against hyperion were both COTC and Hyperion + other held 3 back to back sieges, some over lapping, consisting of about a total of 1500 individual people.

And the number wasn't 13k from each clan, it was between 10k-13k from all the major alliance during the first world conflict. I know because I was the person who put together the damn spreadsheet in the first place. Estimates from people who played the game said the server was supporting about 20k people maybe more maybe a little less but not by much due to in-actives and deleted characters. You can get a decent number of how many people are playing the game by going to df.urme.com and adding up all the clan numbers since that site actually pulls all clans numbers, not just ones in the major alliances.

@APE: thats what happens when you siege so late.

I was a member of a city holding clan in the Yssam Alliance, during the height of the war with Stasis.
Never once did I experience a 200 vs 200 seige.  There were def. instances of 400+ people fighting, but never in the same place, at the same time, over the same object.  They were always spread out over the island; taking place at multiple cities at the same time.

Not once did I experience more then 200 people total, fighting at the same place; at the same time on Yssam.  Pretty much every battle was sub 100 vs sub 100, with the expceptions of saturdays when you would see almost 200 people at one battle.

Spreading BS has become quite the pastime for Xpiher.
If it's not here, it's on the MO forums were he's been posting left and right that he's in the beta; when called out he resorted to, "well, I'm not, it's my friends account."

Also,
You wern't the person that put the together the spreadsheet for the the alliance populations.  That was Ripper; wich was later ripped off by Javac and posted on the Darkfall forums as his own handy work.
The 13k was a statement made by one of the community mods on the official Darkfall forums.
Not one of the guild member counts ever made it to 20k either.

Just because you post a little more cohessively, and less like a psycotic fanboy doesn't make you any less a Darth or Javac.
And you're exposing yourself as just as much a liar.

I counted  41 people.

I was checking thier official forums to see if they had any news about the oct. expansion and saw the link for the new websit.

I clicked it.
And got an advert.  WTF?
I thought it was supposed to be about the company?  First thing I see is nothing but adverts for the game.

This is probably stuff that was put into the game early on, but then they realized they couldn't support players if they had wildlife.  Now that they don't have players, they can add wildlife again.

That got a laugh out of me.

Tell your mom to have someone fix it.

I wonder how many of the people that want a remade UO have taken a serious look at Mortal Online?

FPV and FPS aside.
Yeah.
UO.

Good article.

To the guy above me, MO is not a darkfall clone.

Heh, even the community is a clone of Darkfall. Full of people who flame "go back to WoW" whenever someone suggests any content other than FFA PvP.  The community alone is enough reason to stay away from this game.

This guy has absolutely no idea what he's talking about.

BTW,
go back to wow.

I'll be buying a PS3 when this game releases.
Just because of this game.

That and my girlfriends kid has pretty much confiscated my 360.

Just because you allow everyone to have every ability in game doesn't make it a sandbox.
Instancing has nothing to do with a sandbox.

DF doesn't use a skill system, it uses an ability system.  You level one ability in order to get a new ability.

It has one class.  The warrriorarchermage.

Everyone starts in exactly the same way.  With a leafblade.  That's linear.

You are restricted to were you have a house.  You can't build a house, and not everyone can have a house.

City building is restricted.  Were you can place assets is predetermined.  That's linear.

The only thing sandboxy about the game is that you can learn every ability.
Other then that the game imposes restrictions and a very linear leveling system.

just the graphics

from what i've seen the skies have got to be the most realistic of any game out there right now - water ain't bad either

but the rocks, stones and mountainous landscapes look horrible to me - - - like badly colored cellophane way overstretched on wire frames - hopefully this is the result of lower resolution in beta

Huh?

The mountains are the most realistic I've ever seen in any game.
I have no idea what you're talking about.

So very true.

Although the graphics don't hurt.

Were lucky when we get tooltips that are correct in released games, and your worried about a tooltip in a beta?

A part of the skill system enebles your character to understand dif. things.  When you start you'll have very limitted infromation through tooltips; as you get better with your skills more and more information is revealed.

For someone that's been pretty high and mighty on the official forums and swearing up and down you don't troll and aren't a fanboy of Darkfall, you've been doing an awful good job of trolling the game.

AE farming has been going on since the start of the game.

i14 didn't start it.
People were AE farming 5 years ago.

Server problems.
Missing features.
The love/ hate relationship of the gamers.
NA server opening.
Players having to buy a second account to play on the new server on day one.  (or even today for that matter.)

Now point out another game that had all of those things happen when it released.
There are none.
Put it into perspective.

Exactly, put it into perspective...all of those were totally predictable based on the history of the hype, BS, drama and near-vaporware nature of DFs development for years...so why was any of it "interesting"? It's like saying someone crying on Oprah was "surprising"...no it was expected.

This article brings up an issue: the low quality of mmos released so far this year and still to be released.

That - right there. Hard to have any "interest" when all we are seeing is garbage.

Wow.
Comprehension has failed you.

It's interesting because of all the controversy that surrounded it.
It has nothing to do with the quality of the game.

Oh god man, don't do it! DON'T DO IT! I'm playing WAR until someone else comes out. Darkfall is a seriously bloody sandbox where you'll spend more time pissed about all the tards ganking you because they can than ever having any fun.

Ive never played a sandbox game, and I'd like to try one. So nobody has an answer here for me? No current or even former players?

Don't misunderstand, Im not like these people who feel forced to play an MMO, I havent been subscribed to anything since AoC's patch 1.05 (and that was only for a single month).

Im looking for something pvp oriented without the "Hay, grind for 30 hours and we'll let you play the REAL game..."

It's a sandbox in the sense that you aren't given direction, and there are no classes.  It stops there.
Check out Saga of Ryzom if you haven't.  I'm not saying buy the game, just read up about it.

Darkfall is all about PvP.
You'll level skills to make your toon stronger and fight other players.

It's very much like a persistant world Team Fortress type of a game.
You'll watch your toon harvest nodes for resources, and then turn those resources into gear.
You'll fight mobs endlessly, or other players if you choose.

I can't attest to how the grind is today.
AV has taken strides to improve the rate at wich you level skills, and the players seem to be happy with it.

I don't reccomend the game.
If you're looking for a game that has a lot of diversity in things to do then it's not Darkfall.
It's all about two things.  Leveling your skills, and killing other players.
And the melee combat is just horrible.

PS:  It's also very much group dependant.  That's not to say impossible to play solo, just that it very much a group dependant game.  If you're looking for one on one type fights then you'll be wandering around for quite some time.  If you're in a guild and are grouping, it should be easier for you to find pvp.

I liked the article.
Thought it was a fun read.

I agree that Darkfall was the most interesting launch of '09; just wish I hadn't been a part of it.

To the people blowing up over Darkfall being number one on his list,
Being interesting doesn't mean good or bad.  It means that there were things surrounding it that set it apart from the others, whether those things be good or bad.

Jon wasn't making a point of Darkfall being a good game, any more then he was making a point that it was a bad game.  He was just pointing out that with everything that went on during it's launch that it was the most interesting of the mmo's to release this year.

Think of it this way.
The staged release.

There are none.
Put it into perspective.  Imagine if Dark and Light had released this year.  I believe it could have made the list in the number two spot right behind Darkfall. Dark and Light isn't a good game, but it was interesting due to all of the controversy surrounding it.

It's the controversy, and the events surrounding Darkfalls launch that earned it the number one spot on Jon's list; not the quality of the game.

Now sit back.
Breathe.
Pop an adoral.
And relax.

Some of you got way to hyper over nothing.
