Good choice. It will probably help a good bit.

Speed isnt the only indicator you need to look at.. Ping time is the most important thing in a good connection. In all honesty online gaming is fine with a 1.5mb connection but patch downloads and digital game downloads would be slow. I am not familiar with ISPs in Canada so you should probably ask some people you know about their experiences.

Edit : To go along with the above poster.. You could play WoW over dial up and I actually did for awhile until broadband became available to me years ago. But I was never able to do any dungeons while using dial up.

I think a mega server with no phasing would be interesting.
At least the game is improving at a decent rate unlike say Landmark. I have been tempted to buy in but I think I will hold out.

I am not getting 60 fps, but I am not having any problems and the game is not even optimized.  I disagree about it being ugly, but that is opinion and everyone has a different one.  I enjoy the sun and moon and the shadows they cast.  I think the colors are vibrant and lend themselves to a fantasy world.  Why use it?  Because it is cool.

My machines running Landmark right now:

3 year old desktop - i7 2700k, gtx 570, 16g ram, ssd - settings ultra everything - never drops below 30 fps

3 year old laptop (daughter plays on it) - i72630qm, gtx 560m, 16g ram, ssd - settings around medium, but tweaked a bit, 25 fps

new laptop - i7 4700hq, gtx 870m, 16g ram, ssd - everything ultra - never drops below 30 fps

I think bandwidth seems to be a bigger issue than specs though.  You are not going to be able to play this game on dial up.  At all.  I was struggling the first few weeks of alpha, but I upgraded my internet from 3 Mbps to 6 Mbps and it was a lot better for me.

By ugly I mean the horrible LOD after a certain distance.

And no you arent running over 30 fps with no drops on ultra with shadows at the highest no matter your setup. And I dont mean standing around either. I can play the game on Ultra and average 30 fps ( with a better rig ) with drops in the teens and some highs in the 40s MAYBE 50s depending on the area.  Near a decent claim? Forget about it.

Internet matters with this game because they stream everything which is also another bad idea.

As for the above post about voxels allowing more ... More what? You cant destroy terrain to trap creatures in for easy kills because that will be viewed as an exploit no doubt. Mining? I dont think I want to see thousands of holes in the ground ruining the landscape because people are mining. I would be fine with a Ultima Online setup when it came to mining.

What else? Building homes? Sounds great but voxel homes look terrible with all the smudges and bleed effect that happens. When you are at the perfect distance they look ok but close up.. Yikes.

Magic combos destroying landscape during battles? Again that goes back to combat exploits and I am sure people would end up not liking it in PvP either after being trapped for the 1000th time by the same combo that everyone would be using.

Castle Seiges? That can already be done with basic physics.

I dont think voxels bring anything major to the MMORPG genre and from what I can tell will end up being more of a headache for the devs than anything.

All of this does not require the voxel touch of Landmark.. So I have no idea as to why they wanted to use it. Its ugly and performs horribly.
Probably $150 minimum.

Personally, the answer is yes, they are probably highly embarrassed for giving an award to a game that to this day, over a year later, does not exist in any playable form. A game which launched its Kickstarter(Founders Packs), shortly after SoE Live. How much of the final game do they have done? 0%. They have writers churning out BOOKS that comprise the majority of the current game. They have customers building cities in Landmark that could end up being used in EQN. They can play smoke and mirrors with that Landmark content, but they haven't even finished 10% of That Game(based on their stated goals) yet. But hey, its at least in Alpha, and no... Landmark didn't win any awards(for which it would have made more sense) in 2013. EQN, The Game That Never Was, did.

Publicly, no.. because obviously EQN was best.. even though there was and is no game. It was obviously the best.. we said so.

Privately, SoE and other large companies pay the bills for sites like this one, not you. They won't be so crass as to do award <-> money, but when it comes time to put forth millions of dollars of advertising... they know who to go to /wink /nudge.

Can't tell if you are being serious or not. As of this weekend, they stated that EQN is 60% finished. EQN doesn't have Founders Packs. Not sure what goals you speak of that they haven't met, did I miss the Kickstarter page that SOE put up? They are a pretty small indie company, maybe they are struggling to make ends meet? Some of you are so amusing =)

I'm being absolutely serious. This is how the world works.

As per SOE... believe what you see, not what they say. Anybody who swallows the line that EQN is "60% finished" is simply being delusional in hopes that the game will magically show up tomorrow. If they had something more to show at SOE Live, you could bet your last dollar they would have shown it. Heck, all you have to do is take a look at SOE as a company to see whats happening. Free Realms has been shut down. They've honed their publicly available games on the All Access down to the 4 that still generate funds(EQ, EQ2, DCUO, and PlanetSide 2), and have been using those funds for new development. The expansions themselves(for EQ and EQ2) are getting so small they can barely be called expansions with a straight face. But they'll still be looking for $40, of course.

The fact is, they're currently in a state of strangulation(not having funds for new games, not having new games finished to a point they can adequately  provide new funds) and a death spiral as a company and doing whatever they can to get those new games finished ASAP. But without the resources to put into it up front, they're having to do as much of it on the cheap as possible as they generate funds, and its taking forever. Anyone who doesn't realize they're going for MVP (Minimum Viable Product) before pushing whatever that is to release so they can generate fundage to make the rest, simply hasn't been paying attention. There is actually a fairly good chance that they might not get on the other side of that death spiral at all and simply go under.

Did you watch their "Grand Banquet" last night on Twitch? I did. At least they stayed on theme of 'you do all the work, we don't have the money'. It largely consisted of three things: the usual cosplay contest winners that took forever, a 'talent show' by the fans that was easily one of the most cringeworthy affairs I think that I've ever seen front a con, and then bingo night at SOE where they give out sponsor products for half an hour. Smedley didn't even bother to show his face.

60% could be pretty much anything. Combat could be 1%, all 40 classes could be 1% together. 60% is meaningless without context. They set the % and feel they have that much of their game completed. Without any proof of it being otherwise, I'll take their word, but I'm not going "OMG 40% to go, it will be here tomorrow!"

You assume much. They might have an internal release schedule and don't want to show off too much too soon. Yes they could, but not required. Combat was shown last year. Yet it is just now making it into Landmark. We have no clue what is going on internally.

Can you back up your "facts"? You know how much EQ1/2, Landmark, DCUO, and PS2 are bringing in? Please share.

How long have you been a SOE customer? Do you know anything about Fan Faire or SOE Live and how it works? It isn't and never has been BlizzCon status. Totally different event.

You appear to have made this account solely for EQN, not sure what went wrong, but interesting how your tune as changed.

I've been a customer of theirs for 12 years. I know how the place works. Sony Online Entertainment burned their credibility with fans years ago. That *anyone* takes their word on face value is the sign of a delusional mark hoping and praying for better days and getting pissed when anyone impedes on that fantasy with simple things like facts.

Your trying to lead me down a strawman argument not withstanding, the games they've decided to keep active are the ones they make money from. That's just simple business sense. If they were losing money on a game, they'd shut it down to push more into development.

And yes, I'm well aware of how Fan Faire works and have even attended some of them. Even within SOE Fan Faire's, what they put on was Fan Faire Lite. Short on panels, kept the core fronting 'dev team' to a minimum, didn't even bother having Smed show up to rally the troops, etc. Like the famously thinning # of zones, everything keeps getting lighter and lighter on content.

If it helps you any, I honestly do believe they're on the right track with EQN... but I'm not sure they'll get on the other side of it before going under. And make no mistake, right now they're at about a 50-50 proposition as to whether or not they get to final release of either product. Keep in mind they've already been working on EQN for 4-5 years and gone through at least 2 iterations. I first saw a lot of the base EQ Next stuff at SOE Live *2010*.

One of the things that people seem to forget about Blizzard is that the development of World of Warcraft nearly bankrupted that company outright and they put every last dollar they had on it. I feel safe in saying that SOE is doing much of the same, but make no mistake, there is no guarantee they'll make it to the promised land like Blizzard. Right now its completely up in the air, and while they're trying to put a good face on it by throwing out fantasy numbers they think you'll eat up like 60%, they really don't know if they'll make it there either.

Wait.. Vanilla WoW costed around 50 million to make didnt it? So you are saying that Blizzard barely had those funds? Doesnt sound right.

If EQN is really 60% complete then that would mean the game world ( surface area ) should be almost complete one would think with crafting , skills , items , dungeons , AI etc.. the other 40%...? But if that were the case I am sure we would have gotten some fly over shots and not just the lame stuff they showed.

I felt the same about EQ2.. Mainly the melee attacks that looked ridiculous.
The open weekend they did was a mess .. Not really inclined on donating anything.

Wow. I was soooo excited for EQN but now I have no idea what to say.

Possibly switching EQN to the same setup as Landmark.. was a bad idea. The style , voxels , action combat . etc feels at home in Landmark .. In EQN I feel it could be holding the game back. Go launch Planetside 2 and then Landmark.. I would rather be running around an EQN that looked like PS2 than Landmark.

It looks so it is meant for ages 7-12, not a 3rd installment of a franchise with modern technology, personally I will be passing on this game.

The style puts me off a bit too.. I think it is fine for Landmark but the Everquest franchise deserves better I think.

I think they are the older, less evolved orcs. Not the sophisticated ones like Thrall =D

But that was Hellscream..? And that cutscene looked a lot like the one in WC3 where he and Thrall were fighting the same guy.. Did that being ( forget the name but used to be an orc ) get killed twice then?

The orcs have a slightly different look to them.. Could it be because of the upcoming movie?

I for one would have preferred if they had stayed with the similar style they used for Planetside 2 for EQN ( terrain anyway. The player models are blurry and terrible ). But if they can fine tune performance when they add in multi core support for Landmark ( and hopefully EQN will have it from the get go ) and off load things to the GPU like shadows to drastically improve performance I would be happy.

Outside of combat in Landmark the one other major thing I think is missing is getting some real landcapes going. The current island setup is holding the game back IMO because you have to try and get hills , flats , gullys , mountains , forests ..etc in such a small area and it really detracts from the game. Having a continent sized landmass with rivers ( when they can get water to work correctly ) , creeks , mountains , flats , all tiers of resources..etc. would really open up the game and start creating an in game community.

While EQN will share similarities to Landmark we wont have to worry about space ships , toilet bowels , vegas signs..etc to break immersion. And to top it off a handcrafted and well made world which are far superior to randomly generated ones.

Going to Bind on Pickup from Bind on Equip is that only thing I dislike.. Finally had a game with a gear economy all the way through. I dont get the fascination wtih BoP.

I'd think it ties to players having the ability to effect others experience TBH. FFA PVP has never really been all that popular in the MMORPG space. It's been seen as a problem going all the way back to UO.

Honestly if there happened to be a DF PvE server released I would be all over it. Mainly because I do not have a lot of time for gaming anymore and FFA PvP isnt something I want to deal with anymore. I didnt mind in UO because I was a kid and had all day every day mostly ( home schooled ) but switched to trammel anyway so I could do what I wanted all the time.

As for the topic.. I think ESO feels very much like an Elder Scrolls game. I play in first person ( except in PvP ) and really enjoy it. The game world is magnificent , the questing is similar as is exploration. The future of the game looks really bright too.

I am still hopeful for early access this year.

This article should be deleted and if it were possible burnt! AA has nothing that even resembles an " Elder Scrolls " feel.. Nothing at all.

Not the combat.

Not the exploration.

Not the quests.

Not the crafting.

Not the look or the feel.

What else am I missing?

Dumb article is dumb.

One of WoW's biggest problems now is the power curve is insane. Everyone's walking around a god. Equipment stat bonuses in the thousands now. And yet the relativity remains constant. Since everything and everyone else in the game is also a god. Even trash mobs make Vanilla raid bosses look like starter zone tutorial mobs.

Which is a reason why I tend to not go back to previous MMOs I have played after a certain amount of time. The numbers are just crazy.

I think it would be interesting if an MMO used the method of lower numbers but hidden abilities that arent apparent. Like the different between a mid range +3 Longsword and a high end +6 Longsword may just be +3 to your dice roll but that +6 also has higher blocking ability ( going by old school MUDs and Graphical MUDs here ) and may even be a Psi Cutter ( cuts incoming spell damage by a certain amount ).. The numbers stay tame but the difference is noticeable.
