When sneaking you are invisible to players that can't 'perceive' you.

Basically for some players you will be invisible, for others you might be part visible which means you are successful in hiding from a distance, but not up close

Stealther classes have been one of the major ruining PVP characteristics in many games. Please remove them now before the game goes live and we are stuck with them.

Good thing its not class based. Maybe stealth will resemble UO's version?

I really wish games would go back to how MUDs and the first Graphical ORPGs did stealth / Hide In Shadows.. Basically you had to be near something that cast a shadow like a tree or a wall. This ' hiding in the middle of a field ' is beyond annoying.

The answers seem pretty honest...

I am not very fond of the death by age feature though. I would rather age while gaining titles like The Yellabelly , The Experienced , The Veteran , The Ancient..ect but not die from aging. People get attached to their characters.

The first screenshot looks fake like the models were moved into position but the rest look real enough.

Whether I preorder or not will be based off of the video .. If it shows an indepth look at many features and combat then the guys at Xsyon will be 40$ richer.

But I do have a question.. Whats with the terrain editing and such? Something like that could lead to alot of not so nice happenings. Anyways.. Say I build me a house somewhere .. Can someone come along and make the house impossible to reach / get into by lowering / raising the terrain?

How long does it take to change the terrain?

Will there be an " access level " radius around houses and towns?

Just things I am concerned about.

WTF!!!!!!! how did you make a hot chick in Oblivion? I've tried for like.....a million hours, and she ends up looking like a dude.!?

MODs my friend..

I am wondering if Zenimax would use a different engine or use the one they own .. Whats the name? It was called NetImmerse years ago but then was renamed to something else that I cant remember right now. The engine for Oblivion is good for terrain and buildings and such but its pitiful for animation ( that or Bethesda is clueless when it comes to that ).

LOL that is the sorriest bit of housing I've seen in a while.

Shadowbane was far more advanced, so is Darkfall, and both offered much more depth in what you could do. The doors don't even have an animation to open or close.

Shadowbane was pretty sweet in that regard.. Gankers and SB.EXE really hurt the game though.

Now MO will have gankers , NowGame.EXE , LAG , Terrible launcher AND countless bugs. If SB couldnt fend off a client error and a terrible community how can MO do it with similar issues PLUS many others?

Doesnt look good.

It's hard to take a definite stand on this one. Logic says you're right, but feelings say you're only mostly right. I keep saying the same thing, that if a company, indie or not, wants to make an MMO, they have to compete in the MMO market. There's no "junior playground" for indie games to test the waters; once they release, they're thrown in with the sharks. The only people who will play them are dedicated fans or people who don't mind a rough lump of coal because they can see the faint glint of a diamond hidden inside.

I can't help but wonder what would happen if more people thought like you when EVE released. I doubt the game would've ever gotten off the ground, and then where would sandboxes be? Even worse off than they are now. EVE is the sandbox's champion right now, and for good reason - CCP is a good company and, even though the game was crap at release, enough people decided to pay for it. Maybe some of them wanted to support an indie company and decided to give the game some slack, but I think most people just saw a lot of potential. In MO's case, though, I think it's too broken. People can invest on what the game could be if they want to.

Basically, at least until Earthrise comes out (if it's good), sandbox lovers are screwed. They don't want to support the evil themepark, but they also can't degrade themselves enough to play the crappy sandbox games that are around (or they think EVE is too boring or Darkfall is too focused on FFA PvP). Hell, even if Earthrise turns out to be the answer to everyone's prayers and is a super awesome sandbox, there will be excuses not to play it. Whatever happens, I have to agree that defending indie companies because they're indie is not smart. Cutting them a little slack with your own personal expectations? Sure, that's probably a good idea, since, realistically, they can't compete with the big boys. Like Hercules ultimately said, spend your money on whatever you want. I just want Hercules to remember EVE, though.

This deserved a reply on its own because it is a really well thought out post. Right to the point -- I have not forgotten EVE.

But to elaborate a bit -- EVE had a lot of things going for it that current MMOs do not. The rough release quality of EVE and problems as well didn't bite them as badly because well -- there weren't a lot of MMOs on the market at all at the time. You had a choice of only a handful. But let's ignore that fact, and say my mindset is the same now as it was then. Obviously it's not -- I've evolved in what I deem a quality release, and games like WOW have shown me that yes, it's possible to launch a game and have it work too, using a proper development cycle. Heck, even Darkfall had a shoddy release due to the way they set up the buying system -- but the game itself was very playable and every system basically worked. It wasn't much fun, of course -- but that's why I didn't buy it. Not due to bugs or crashes -- there were hardly any. Getting INTO the game was a chore, but once you were in.... it was fine.

But let's say EVE released now -- would I buy it? Possibly. CCP was smart in what they developed, as they kept it small and "in space". The amount of art was limited because space doesn't have any detail to it, it's just open space with some stars. But what EVE did do, is create a political/PvP system that was better than anything at the time. And currently, it's still pretty darn good. The problem with EVE now is that if they released with those graphics today, they'd be toast -- people demand eyecandy and it's a good reason why MO has gotten some interest because of their pre-rendered movies and pre-rendered screenshots. Of course, the actual game doesn't look like either but that's why it's a teaser :)

EVE today would have to compete with many other MMOs, and my guess is that it would be able to compete. It's obviously how you market it too, but EVE has got a "killer feature" in their PvP/political system. A "killer feature" that is missing from MO since it's an entire copy of other games in the hopes that it will be a core design. We know that this isn't the case, obviously, and it's why I think MO is going to go more along the lines of Dark and Light than EVE. MO has no redeeming features that make it great -- heck.. most of what it advertises as a great feature or whatever, is actually done better in other games like Darkfall. The PvP is mindless and has no depth, about the same level as Darkfall.

Comparing MO to EVE is a poor comparison not for any other reason than MO has nothing that makes it unique, or amazing, or even fun. EVE, while shoddy on the graphics and with other bugs, still had the redeeming quality of being fun and had that killer feature. In this day and age, if the game launched totally unfinished, and basically unplayable like MO, then I wouldn't buy it. But EVE didn't launch that way -- it had its share of problems sure, but the game was playable, but there wasn't a lot of content. That was a smart decision in design though, because they built what they knew they could make and support. SV is going the opposite direction, building a game they have no expertise to make, trying to make a world larger than they can support, and adding more features than they actually know how to implement properly. I knew somebody that worked for CCP, and they actually did use a software development life cycle system (SDLC), and it ensured a lot of the stuff that went into the game actually worked right.

In the end, I think in this day and age, EVE launched as it was would probably be OK because of its features -- MO on the other hand has no redeeming features that aren't better in other games, and it will suffer because of it.

Hmm really you do realize that the launch of EVE was FULL of bugs exploits and mechanics that was plain broken. Even to this day EVE has broken mechanics every patch that needs fixed. The difference between the 2 development wise are not much. EVE had 2 things going for it that SV does not. EVE was launched back when MMOs was still pretty new and sandbox wasn't common, and that they game they focused on was based on a sci-fi space ship simulator.

Note how horrible the game looks at this level. Oh whats that in the corner... the client window? Didn't I hear people complain that SV was so bad at programming that windowed mode had the name UNREAL ENGINE in the corner? Oh my.

Hmm very simplistic character creation that was scrapped and replaced time after time.

I even enjoy the buttons in this picture, reminds me of visual basic, great stuff.

Another one with the name in the corner... strange concept huh.

Comparing the 2 games are like comparing apples to oranges. The developments are very similar and that is something worth noting. The political thing you keep mentioning wasn't any staple in EVE. At launch there was 4 races to choose from and 2 pirate factions. ALL politics was player created. You can do the exact same thing in MO.

I think this review has been posted already but what the hell. If you noticed this review it seems somewhat familiar. In those reviews no where do you see anything about this important POLITICAL staple you speak of. EVE enticed people with the unknown, a single server and boasted a great economy. The PVP system was and is similar to most. Lawless space where you can do whatever you want vs. concord space where attacking people will cause you to be concorded. MO has this with red towns and blue towns.;read-review

Honestly im just rambling but w/e. The whole point is the only thing comparable with EVE and SV is the development. And if SV can follow the same lines of CCP then it will do just fine.

I enjoy MO right now with what it has to offer. It has issues some very irritable but overall I can see the "Vision". Overall if SV does want to bring others into the game they have to bring something worthy to the table that makes people want to log in.

Yes, but EVE launched in 2003 among a handful of MMOs.

MO is launching in 2010 with a LOT of MMOs. Maybe CCP got away with a lot because they were a pioneer. I don't know. Would it stand up today? Maybe. With those graphics, probably not though :) But people also don't buy games solely on graphics either nowadays... it's all about gameplay. And MO's gameplay is horrible. EVE's may have been horrible too but again... that was 7 years ago. What was acceptable to people back then is not necessarily going to be acceptable now.

And EVE by the way, had *real* programmers that actually worked on other projects before EVE. They also had an underlying design that was taken and built on another single player game (I forget which). MO has no programmers that have shipped a single product, and no experience (obviously) in a proper development cycle. I've spoken to Henrik enough times to know that much. And we see now with the tons of bugs and problems, it's what is killing the game. Oh, and the fact that the design isn't a design at all, but it's just a mish mosh of stolen features from other games, put together to try to make a new one. Find my car analogy on that one, it was pretty apt I think.

EVE also had a genre pretty much all to itself.. Games like DF and MO have to compete with countless other games in the same genre. The sci fi genre is just barren of any competition. With competition you just cant expect people to wait and wait and wait and hope on things that most likely will never arrive.

If its anything like the Mythos beta then I am going to pass. That game was a disaster waiting to happen.

I mean.. it's a nice game but I don't see a reason for Diablo 2 players to get excited about this game.

Other than it looks better, plays better, and has some awesome Modding tools coming out?

Thats the only reason I bought this game but the MODs have been vastly underwhelming to this point. I would rank TL as one of my worst purchases in the last year. The only feature I like is the pets and how you can send them to sell stuff..

Would have been much better than there been coop play ( supposed to be a mod out there in the works for it but no holding my breath ) but they decided not to include it to try and make more money from an " MMO ".

I honestly think that these guys will go out of business before the MMO releases or will end up releasing an unfinished product and then going under anyway.

Not when it causes you to not being to play the game. Its as good a reason as any.

Yet DF is anything but just a Gankfest. Try the game in its current state please it's actually very good. The people that kept that game going did a service the the mmo genre.

At its current time not many mmos are as good as DFO.

With that said sometimes this is the type of hate you attract when you promise big things as a indy sandbox developer. Both AV and SV didn't live up to it and you people certainly wont get off your hate wagons to actually reevaluate DF to see it as the good game it is.

Sorry but NO.

Everyone would hate on LotRO saying it killed their precious game.

You could also argue that without WoW, LotRO wouldn't be as popular as it is today.  A lot of the items LotRO features have been recycled from the very same features that EQ and WoW created.

I would argue that without WOW, LOTRO simply would not exist as we know it. I'd bet it would be a radically different beast altogether.

Yea. It would either be like AC1 and have less than 100,000 players or like AC2 and be terrible. Either way it wouldnt be good. As we have all seen the past with IP based MMOs.. There is only so much a name can do for you.

Its got millions of subscribers so it must be a great game.

It wasnt implied.. What was implied is that the mods for M&B pale in comparison to other games with mods because the ones for it change practically nothing. The mods for games like Oblivion can pretty much redo everything and to suggest that online mode was the only mod that added anything is pure idiocy.

M&B is a pathetic game that shallow minds like because that is all they can comprehend at any moment.

Hold on a second, why come into my thread insulting people who like M&B? M&B combat is superior to what you find in oblivion or morrowind IMO, they may be better overall RPG's sure, however they aren't going for the realism M&B was shooting for. I'm a Bethesda fanboy through and through, I still like M&B combat much more.

There's a way to respond to a poster you disagree with without insulting everyone who likes a game.

BTW the Star Wars mod for M&B changes everything about the game.

1. Because you cant see the forest because of the trees.

2. The SW mod changed nothing other than skins and names. It did not deviate from the strict base game. No mod ever will for M&B.. The game is to limited. The only mod worth anything was the Viking mod where all units are on foot but its still boring after a short time.

M&B is a shallow game. Period. The combat is boring and there is nothing there that is unique. 90% of the mods suffer from a single problem.. The people that come up with them have no idea how to balance the troops.

At least Morrowind , Oblivion , Gothic had other things to make up for their shallow combat. M&B has nothing.

Why not just a thumbs up \ thumbs down system?

Leave an instance? If its no problem with the group then they dont vote.. If you just disappear they could give you a thumbs down if they wanted.

Mouthy Person? Thumbs down.

Think everyone is in instant epics soon as they ding 80? Thumbs down.

Good player? Thumbs up.

Just enjoy the dungeon crawl no matter if XX person is geared to the gills? Thumbs up.

ect. ect.

This would weed out the bad apples and give them what they deserve.

So far i haven't found anything even remotely interesting or appealing to do inside this game. It's a mess of needlesly complicated skill-system.

But the worst thing is the visual style. It feels like being in a dirty stone-age world, i never ever feel like getting in.

As much as i love simulations, i find this game extremely repulsive. I'm sorry. If they want me to endure understanding the working of all those knowledge sub-skills, at least give me some comfort and joy of controlling my character. the FPS camera, the controls, and the lurid looks of primitive SODOMA/GREEKISH towns are simply too ugly to draw me in.

I have to say, when the crafting system was simple it was really fun.  I could just mine for 5 minutes, refine the items, and make the most powerful armor and weapons.  The new crafting system with all of the books and grinding skills and grinding money, it is so complicated now, people in the public ventrilo told me to "go search on google how to craft that item" which was ridiculous.

Making it extremely complex is going to make people walk away, they are making it so complex that the only people that will understand it are fans that follow the game 24/7 and read all of the guides word for word on their forum and on their site.  Its really a nightmare.

Crafting is a reason I lost interest in this game.. I am not willing to dedicate 1 crit for mining , another for crafting and another to use it. It is way overboard.

Woah, bro. If M&B isn't a sandbox, neither is Oblivion, or any of its predecessors for that matter.

Wait...neither of them are.

They're open-ended games, not sandboxes. Get it right.

M&B is neither.

I also didnt call Oblivion a sandbox now did I? I said the the mods for M&B are basic and add nothing to the game.

Get it right.

UO - I didnt like running through a forest only to hit a housing area and having to zig zag my way through for half an hour. That wasnt fun and it made the game ugly with nothing but clutter.

SWG - How many times did I run into an invisible wall that was a house that didnt want to load? I lost count. It was a mess.

I can handle housing like EQ2 but thats it. I never play another game where houses can be placed anywhere.

Lyonesse ( DAoC ) - I think that was the name..

Goldshire ( WoW )

Dark Woods ( WoW ) - Someone will probably know the exact name.

Night Elf areas ( WoW )

Butcherblock Mountains ( EQ1 )

Here is the kicker though..

You could not gate out. You could not die without leaving your gear behind. You HAD to make it to the end of the zone or else you lost everything. There was no other exit except after the boss dragon of the zone. The risk vs reward was immense, but to come out on top was something very few accomplished or even tried.

Do you think such a place would ever fit in todays MMO world? Or would too many people attempt it, lose all their gear, and whine until the devs caved and dismembered the zone into something that can casually be completed?

I miss places like that. I miss the risks. I miss the REWARDS. Man, what a feeling coming out on top from that place, knowing that one mess up and your whole raids corpses and equipment would be dragon food. The feeling was unlike anything current MMOs could ever offer. Adrenaline rush would be an understatement.

I can only pray that one day, a game that follows the same concept of old school EQ is born. True risks. True rewards.

Except people that attempted it had backup gear for their backup gear for their backup gear.. So to the people that tried it it wasnt a big risk.
