This stood out to me immediately upon reading it as to my recollection, Darkfall had promised that there would be no pre-orders for their game. This seemed to be done as a response to critics who called the game’s validity into question."

And I would like to refer to Tasos: "The pre-orders are necessary so that we can have some measure of the demand."

Jon Wood. I have not studied economics very much, but I can totally understand Aventurine's move on this one. Yes, they might have promised not to make any pre-orders. But, Aventurine is clearly in a difficult situation as they only have two choices. They can commercially launch their game and receive such a great response to sales that they might have to close down any new players wanting to buy the game. Or allow it and risk instability, servers crashing and lag. Or they can do the only reasonable thing and give the players who want the game the most a chance to get it. There are fans who have followed this game for many years. It is unfair for them to miss out on the launch. Therefore, I applaud Aventurine for making it possible for the individual fan to somehow secure himself a position at launch. And I don't think pre-orders are a bad thing. Plans change and I believe they have taken the best approach.

I am also eager to get early access to the game. It is a smart thing to do because it allows those testers who really want to help an ability to do it. I have been upset every day since they started closed hardware testing. I felt I was an important part of the DF fan community, but I was never given a chance to help. Now I can have it if I pay a meaningless amount of dollars. I am perfectly fine with this.

Therefore, I don't feel you should criticize Tasos and Aventurine's decision.

Order of the White Border aside... you seriously think that a man and a company who has a horrid time promising dates, details, and presentation of their product--- is worthy of gaining the sympathy of a playerbase that runs on faith?

Ever run a business? You can't make false promises like that. The very reaction of skepticism and anti-DF sentiment is the very thing that can topple corporations with too much damage to their public representation. Either you deliver on  your promises, or you fold.

You can argue, that developers make false promises all the time, like what happened with a lot of MMOs who didn't deliver everything they hoped to achieve on launch. But as you can imagine, it still damaged their business even with good intentions. Or put their own game on a pedestal, which they can't return from.

Does Tasos deserve the assload of criticism? Hell yes. He's horrible as a Public Representative, if nothing else about his company and its game.

when other companies do it, they get slammed, but when Aventurine does it, its good.

lol...i am enjoying this immensely.

That's why we call these players fanboys

No, my friendly trolls. We are called... the Chosen of Tasos. Or--- followers of the Great White Border.

I think it is a smart move, and with the open beta on jan 22 insteda of the game, we can not only see if it is as good as we hoped, but get rid of the crapload of bugs that will be at any mmo launch

Blasphemy! Our Lord Tasos needs our funds to secure that their independent development house isn't consumed by the debts incurred by loans, loans which are required to pay for their meals and their equipment. What? Do you think manna grows on trees? Pfeh!

Yes! Praise you Famous Albatross!

Thank you for being humble in all your iniquities.

Thank you for showing us that you are the way, the truth, and the flight!

Thank you for guiding all those who were astray, both grey bordered and trollkin.

Thank you for ensuring that the future generations of your children shall be graced by the wonder and splendor, that is your Word--- Darkfall.

Thank you for showing us, that despite all attempts of philosophy and education, we are still but lambs led by cunning wolves... or a walrus guiding baby oysters to dinner.

And thank you, most holy Tasos... that in the end, you shall watch over us. Let know from this day forward, let no player make war upon any other player. Let no critic conspire against this new beginning. And let no independent developer consort with foreign governments. And to all the enemies of Aventurine, seek not to bar our way. For WE shall win through… No matter the cost.

Jan 22 was the first date EVER, try again.............
Except for the various dates of the closed and open betas that were supposed to have started on a "feature complete" game years ago.

But hey- this is the first publicly released release date they have ever missed. Let's just go on pretending that this is the same as the game never having been delayed.

Yes, I apologize for my lost brethren. They seem to forget that there were some dates in December that were fairly official by the hands of Tasos. My brother wasn't specific in his retort... January 22 is the first official release date ever... but thankfully I recall there were many dates, broad and general that have graced my ears concerning Darkfall.

Kneel before the Famous Albatross, pagans! Darkfall's truth is nigh!

What the hells is it with some of you advising starting Alliance? It doesn't flippin' matter if you're Horde or Alliance. Whether its respectful people or horrible people, there's a good chunk of those on both sides. PvP wise? Differs between Battlegroups. PvE/Raid-wise, it doesn't matter which side... there's a good balance on each end.

Frankly after leveling an Alliance toon to 60, i found it less exciting than leveling a toon 1-60 on Horde. How's that for your counter to advising people to go Alliance.

of course the game is going to launch on-time.  I fully expect this will happen and have complete faith in Tasos.

You may ask yourself... "Well, yourself..... How do you know this?"

And yourself will answer AIbots.

AIbots to distribute.  AIbots to run customer service.  AIbots to finish programming the game.  AIbots to run servers.

They have over 9000 AIbots working right now in beta and more are being added everyday which will make this game the best ever.

And in times where Tasos cannot deliver the good word, there is an AI-bot understudy named ALBOT. For who can doubt the Son of Tasos?

Do we have a list of fanbois on MMORPG.com to which we can crucify for their blind-faith and all that Tasos-loving material? So far, I only see 3 named.

I can appreciate people being anxious/eager/excited about the impending launch of a game they've probably been looking forward to... No knocking that, I've been there myself.

But no matter how much I've eagerly awaited something and *so* wanted it to be everything I was hoping for and more, I kept a degree of skepticism about me that it could end up being nothing what I expected.

That concept seems completely lost on some people here. They're just throwing themselves 110% at everything and anything Tasos has said, hanging on and swearing by his every word like they were handed down from God themself. And if he hasn't said it himself, no problem, they're saying it for him.

If he says something and it doesn't happen (ie. when he said it would definitely be out inside of 2008), they either pretend he never said it at all, or somehow twist the meaning around to be something not even close to what he actually said.

I've seen people already putting forth possible excuses, in case it doesn't launch on the 22nd, just so they can continue faithfully defending everything and anything Tasos has said about the game.

I mean, if you've never played a MMORPG before and haven't gone through the routine of following development, getting into and/or following beta, and so forth, then I could understand how the way they're handling this doesn't seem so odd.

But if you've been around the block a few times, and then seen the way they're handling this? No way. Red flags as far as the eye can see. And that's not "hate talk", so don't even bother going there. It's called looking at the situation for what it is, not for what I want it to be.

Frankly, with some of the comments here you either have to be completely unfamiliar with the typical development -> test -> release (and that's highly simplified) routine or willing to believe anything as long as it's what you want to believe.

Seriously.

The game very well may somehow launch on Jan 22, and be in a perfectly playable state. Given the precedent set, time and again, by developers in the past who weren't prepared enough, odds are more and more against it with every day that goes by.

Have your high hopes for the game and all... But leave some room for skepticism, too.

What is this blasphemy? Its trolls like you, who are worse than the whiny naysayers pretending to be like the rest of the Order of the White Border... Using your logic and modus-operandi. Withdraw back to your cave with your philosophers and boy-lovers! Skeptics? Pfeh!

Im not the type of person to flame any one.. yet alone a game.

But you would have to be bonkers to go out and buy this game when its out without seeing anything..heard anything..

with all the things missing.. and with no news .. some thing just seems really fishy..

Either its a clever ploy and want gamers to feel a fresh experince without testers saying everything about it.. or.. its dark and light verison 2.. and to be honest..the graghics look horrid anyway..

i hope im wrong and this game does well.. we need a new mmo that is worth while..

I totally agree with this guy...Only a Idiot would buy this game on faith it's going to be good. How many games have been a disappointment the last few years. I'm done throwing cash to shitty MMO companies who release games half finished/buggy as hell.

Just try thinking on a technical perspective...MMO's require several months to iron out all the kinks...such as server stability and computer hardware compatibility.

A pity, Noktaris. I am disturbed by your lack of faith! And you will pay, in the name of Tasos, for your lack of vision!

You fool! There is no game, but Darkfall! It is, as it was, and as it shall be. Be at peace with the givings of Tasos, for he is kind. He brings us hope... and his teachings are divine. Kneel before the Great White Border, heathens.

For without Darkfall... there is no MMO equal. No really, even WoW blows real bad, as did AoC, and sadly even WAR. Let's not forget that a good chunk of those F2P games get stale once you get their method of entertainment.

Can't you see it, my brothers? It is not that Tasos is a man of Aventurine... but that he IS the messiah! As Tasos was at the beginning, so was the Word. The Word is Good and it is Darkfall! Behold the white border which casteth glory upon our savior and his teachings. For when the great heavens open on January 22nd, the our lord, Tasos, shall send upon the heathenous disbelievers a great conflagration!

And in the eve of this day... to the dawn of next morn... we shall bask in the flavor of the Word. Upon our lips shall we taste his righteousness! Together, brothers... we shall make ascension to the Great White Border!

I have to agree with Dameonk. Those wallpapers look really bad. I mean, we're already trying to get hard for Darkfall... not need for mediocre wallpapers to give us a limpy.

Personally I know many that have left WoW recently. The expansion made the game way too easy and there simply wasnt enough content. One month after launch and my entire guild had finished all bosses and had full tier 7.5 sets and off-sets. Blizz isnt adding new dungeons anytime soon so I got bored and cancelled.
Having said that, there really isnt an alternative MMO to go too. Im currently not playing anything. LOTR is the closest PVE alternative MMO but its not that great. Warhammer and it pvp focus, bleh no thanks.
I dont see WoW losing big numbers until The Old Republic launches in 2010. Personally I dont like the direction TOR is going so Ill be playing Star Trek Online but TOR is the most likely big game that could take WoW down

LoL NOT ENOUGH CONTENT?? oK Jim sure thign whateevr you say. Entire guild Full tier 7.5 killed all boses.  Ok whatever m8.

Its not that there isn't enough content. Its that the game has become casual. When it comes to raiding, the top guild in the world (whatever Nihilus became), beat all the raid bosses in a week. That's cool... but even THEY thought, "wtf Blizz?"

You shouldn't forget the fact that Nihilium actually was present in Beta and did all the bosses way before other people, anyway you can't compare such a Hardcore guild with other people and it's fine that Blizzard don't make raids for only 5% of the playerbase anymore. If they want it harder they still can do the achievements, i heard there aren't any/many people with the Black Proto Drake (reward for beating Dungeons with some crazy setups) right now.

admriker4 enhances my point underneath what I posted.

And its true, Blizzard previously made raids not as accessible, even when they went from 40-man down to 25-man. However, they even made Heroics easy. My first heroic in WotLK was a cake-walk compared to my first heroic in TBC. I suppose that's the trade-off. accessible to 95% and lose the 5% that raided hardcore.

And Achievements? Cheap form of replayability. I'll give you points for that one... but its still pretty cheap and I would expect more out of Blizzard for all the money we invested in them.

WoW is dying slowly. Once everyone hits 80 and realizes that its become unbalanced and boring. But WoW's style of PvP is very casual. DF's style of PvP is... not casual at all... I'm not an angry enough douche to really want to put myself in a PvP system that is rightly stressful when I have more important stresses in the real world to deal with.

wow so i'm a douche for wanting to play DF and share my love of what it represents...

sorry i didn't mean to make you mad

Apology accepted.

All you love is what DF is hoping to be. And that is all you have... your hope and speculation. And you hope upon hope, that your fellow PvPers think like you do and that they'd all funnel into DF. DF isn't the messiah, and it annoys me to see that the door-to-door love conversion coming from certain blind-faith DF's fans are only enhancing the loathing of trolls further.

Starbucks.

Oh wait, you mean in the game?

LOL. Starbucks? You serious?

That's true, thirdechelon. Certain players found Season gear better than most raid gear.

But to the current situation, there is a problem that is known even on the official WoW forums. Its a burst-damage fest. Some of you are reasoning, "Well, just get more resilience!" That was the solution in TBC, but this time its gone a bit out of wack. Ret Paladins still top the charts for damage scoring in battlegrounds and 2nd to that is whatever class/player combo managed to skillfully surpass their damage, whether mage, rogue, hunter, or DK.

The problem with Ret Paladins is not just their immense burst damage, but their god-bubble is their staying power in battles... damned by the fact that the Priest's Mass Dispel is the only thing that can remove it. Well... what's wrong then? Priests are one of the most nerfed and the least buffed class out of all classes... people who still play priests are struggling unless they got Resilience.

Plus, screw Mana Burn. WHo the hell has time anymore to drain a caster's mana when you're being burst damaged by Elemental Shammies, Ret Paladins, Rogues, Fire Mages, and DKs?

In the end. Its just imbalanced and sadomasochistic.

I condensed your rant down to one idea...

You want a Sandbox MMO. Like Darkfall is supposed to be. Like EVE-Online tries to be.

As far as I know and am concerned with, they are not trying to make this SW:TOR game like a Sandbox MMO. Its almost trying to make MMOs as an MMORPG as it should be. Mixing the stories of Single-player games with the social prospect of MMOs.

Frankly, I'd rather wait to see what they come up with. They're not going to make this as Sandbox as you want it to. Sorry.
